[{"abstract":[{"text":"We present a scanning probe technique for measuring the dynamics of individual fluxoid transitions in multiply connected superconducting structures. In these measurements, a small magnetic particle attached to the tip of a silicon cantilever is scanned over a micron-size superconducting ring fabricated from a thin aluminum film. We find that near the superconducting transition temperature of the aluminum, the dissipation and frequency of the cantilever changes significantly at particular locations where the tip-induced magnetic flux penetrating the ring causes the two lowest-energy fluxoid states to become nearly degenerate. In this regime, we show that changes in the cantilever frequency and dissipation are well-described by a stochastic resonance (SR) process, wherein small oscillations of the cantilever in the presence of thermally activated phase slips (TAPS) in the ring give rise to a dynamical force that modifies the mechanical properties of the cantilever. Using the SR model, we calculate the average fluctuation rate of the TAPS as a function of temperature over a 32-dB range in frequency, and we compare it to the Langer-Ambegaokar-McCumber-Halperin theory for TAPS in one-dimensional superconducting structures.","lang":"eng"}],"publication_identifier":{"eissn":["2469-9969"],"issn":["2469-9950"]},"doi":"10.1103/physrevb.97.184501","citation":{"ieee":"H. However, computing this quantity from atomic-scale simulations is far from trivial, so the potential energy of a system is often used as a proxy. In this paper, we use a combination of thermodynamic integration methods to accurately evaluate the Gibbs free energies associated with defects in crystals, including the vacancy formation energy in bcc iron, and the stacking fault energy in fcc nickel, iron, and cobalt. We quantify the importance of entropic and anharmonic effects in determining the free energies of defects at high temperatures, and show that the potential energy approximation as well as the harmonic approximation may produce inaccurate or even qualitatively wrong results. Our calculations manifest the necessity to employ accurate free energy methods such as thermodynamic integration to estimate the stability of crystallographic defects at high temperatures."}],"publication_identifier":{"issn":["2469-9950"],"eissn":["2469-9969"]},"doi":"10.1103/physrevb.97.054102","citation":{"ieee":"B. The analysis of the reported discontinuity in torque, as an external magnetic field is rotated across the c axis in both crystals, suggests that they have a translationally invariant chiral spin order of the form ⟨Si⋅(Sj×Sk)⟩≠0 in the ground state and persisting over a very wide range of magnetic field and temperature. An extraordinary |B|B2 dependence of the torque for small fields, beside the usual B2 part, is predicted by the chiral spin order. Data for small fields are available for γ−Li2IrO3 and are found to be consistent with the prediction upon further analysis. Other experiments such as inelastic scattering and thermal Hall effect and several questions raised by the discovery of chiral spin order, including its topological consequences, are discussed.","lang":"eng"}],"volume":98,"article_type":"original","quality_controlled":"1","author":[{"id":"13C26AC0-EB69-11E9-87C6-5F3BE6697425","orcid":"0000-0001-9760-3147","last_name":"Modic","first_name":"Kimberly A","full_name":"Modic, Kimberly A"},{"last_name":"Ramshaw","full_name":"Ramshaw, B. In our work, we studied the in-plane magnetic anisotropy of Sr2IrO4 and traced the anisotropic exchange interactions between the isospins in the crystal. The magnetic-field-dependent torque τ(H) showed a prominent transition from the canted antiferromagnetic state to the weak ferromagnetic (WFM) state. A comprehensive analysis was conducted to examine the isotropic and anisotropic regimes and probe the easy magnetization axis along the a b plane. The angle-dependent torque τ(θ) revealed a deviation from the sinusoidal behavior, and small differences in hysteresis were observed around 0° and 90° in the low-magnetic-field regime. This indicates that the orientation of the easy axis of the FM component is along the b axis, where the antiferromagnetic to WFM spin-flop transition occurs. We compared the coefficients of the magnetic susceptibility tensors and captured the anisotropy of the material. The in-plane τ(θ) revealed a tendency toward isotropic behavior for fields with values above the field value of the WFM transition."}],"publication_identifier":{"issn":["2469-9950","2469-9969"]},"doi":"10.1103/physrevb.96.155102","citation":{"mla":"Nauman, Muhammad, et al. “In-Plane Magnetic Anisotropy in Strontium Iridate Sr2IrO4.” Physical Review B, vol. 96, no. 15, 155102, American Physical Society, 2017, doi:10.1103/physrevb.96.155102.","apa":"Nauman, M., Hong, Y., Hussain, T., Seo, M. Although this coupling partially dilutes the Anderson localized peaks towards nearly resonant sites, the most weight of the original peaks remains unchanged. This leads to multifractal wave functions with a frozen spectrum of fractal dimensions, which is characteristic for localized phases in models with power-law hopping. Using a perturbative approach we identify two different dynamical regimes. At weak couplings to the central site, the transport of particles and information is logarithmic in time, a feature usually attributed to many-body localization. We connect such transport to the persistence of the Poisson statistics of level spacings in parts of the spectrum. In contrast, at stronger couplings the level repulsion is established in the entire spectrum, the problem can be mapped to the Fano resonance, and the transport is ballistic."}],"doi":"10.1103/PhysRevB.96.104203","citation":{"ista":"Hetterich D, Serbyn M, Domínguez F, Pollmann F, Trauzettel B. 2017. One of the pivotal challenges in this field is the designation of a consistent interpretation framework within which we can describe quantitatively the universal features of those systems. Here we analyze in a detailed manner the principal experimental data and compare them quantitatively with the approach based on a single-band model of strongly correlated electrons supplemented with strong antiferromagnetic (super)exchange interaction (the so-called t−J−U model). The model rationale is provided by estimating its microscopic parameters on the basis of the three-band approach for the Cu-O plane. We use our original full Gutzwiller wave-function solution by going beyond the renormalized mean-field theory (RMFT) in a systematic manner. Our approach reproduces very well the observed hole doping (δ) dependence of the kinetic-energy gain in the superconducting phase, one of the principal non-Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer features of the cuprates. The calculated Fermi velocity in the nodal direction is practically δ-independent and its universal value agrees very well with that determined experimentally. Also, a weak doping dependence of the Fermi wave vector leads to an almost constant value of the effective mass in a pure superconducting phase which is both observed in experiment and reproduced within our approach. An assessment of the currently used models (t−J, Hubbard) is carried out and the results of the canonical RMFT as a zeroth-order solution are provided for comparison to illustrate the necessity of the introduced higher-order contributions."}],"doi":"10.1103/PhysRevB.95.024506","citation":{"chicago":"Spałek, Jozef, Michał Zegrodnik, and Jan Kaczmarczyk. “Universal Properties of High Temperature Superconductors from Real Space Pairing T-J-U Model and Its Quantitative Comparison with Experiment.” Physical Review B. Rev. Lett. 118, 095301 (2017)]. The angulon consists of a quantum rotor dressed by a many-particle field of boson excitations, and can be formed out of, for example, a molecule or a nonspherical atom in superfluid helium, or out of an electron coupled to lattice phonons or a Bose condensate. Here we develop an approach to the angulon based on the path-integral formalism, which sets the ground for a systematic, perturbative treatment of the angulon problem. The resulting perturbation series can be interpreted in terms of Feynman diagrams, from which, in turn, one can derive a set of diagrammatic rules. These rules extend the machinery of the graphical theory of angular momentum - well known from theoretical atomic spectroscopy - to the case where an environment with an infinite number of degrees of freedom is present. In particular, we show that each diagram can be interpreted as a 'skeleton', which enforces angular momentum conservation, dressed by an additional many-body contribution. This connection between the angulon theory and the graphical theory of angular momentum is particularly important as it allows to systematically and substantially simplify the analytical representation of each diagram. In order to exemplify the technique, we calculate the 1- and 2-loop contributions to the angulon self-energy, the spectral function, and the quasiparticle weight. The diagrammatic theory we develop paves the way to investigate next-to-leading order quantities in a more compact way compared to the variational approaches.","lang":"eng"}],"article_processing_charge":"No","department":[{"_id":"MiLe"}],"corr_author":"1","external_id":{"arxiv":["1704.02616"],"isi":["000407017100009"]},"publisher":"American Physical Society","_id":"995","date_updated":"2026-08-12T14:24:11Z","title":"Diagrammatic approach to orbital quantum impurities interacting with a many-particle environment","oa_version":"Submitted Version","main_file_link":[{"url":"https://arxiv.org/abs/1704.02616","open_access":"1"}],"scopus_import":"1","user_id":"2DF688A6-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"month":"08","project":[{"_id":"26031614-B435-11E9-9278-68D0E5697425","name":"Quantum rotations in the presence of a many-body environment","call_identifier":"FWF","grant_number":"P29902"}],"article_number":"085410","publication":"Physical Review B","publication_status":"published","arxiv":1,"fulldoi":"https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevB.96.085410","publist_id":"6404","issue":"8","type":"journal_article","intvolume":" 96","status":"public","year":"2017","oa":1,"date_published":"2017-08-07T00:00:00Z","date_created":"2018-12-11T11:49:36Z","day":"07","author":[{"id":"4CA96FD4-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","orcid":"0000-0001-8823-9777","last_name":"Bighin","full_name":"Bighin, Giacomo","first_name":"Giacomo"},{"orcid":"0000-0002-6990-7802","last_name":"Lemeshko","id":"37CB05FA-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","first_name":"Mikhail","full_name":"Lemeshko, Mikhail"}],"isi":1,"quality_controlled":"1","volume":96},{"quality_controlled":"1","volume":96,"day":"06","isi":1,"author":[{"orcid":"0000-0002-2399-5827","id":"47809E7E-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","last_name":"Serbyn","full_name":"Serbyn, Maksym","first_name":"Maksym"},{"first_name":"Papic","full_name":"Zlatko, Papic","last_name":"Zlatko"},{"first_name":"Dmitry","full_name":"Abanin, Dmitry","last_name":"Abanin"}],"type":"journal_article","issue":"10","status":"public","year":"2017","intvolume":" 96","date_published":"2017-09-06T00:00:00Z","oa":1,"date_created":"2018-12-11T11:48:45Z","publication":"Physical Review B","fulldoi":"https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevB.96.104201","arxiv":1,"publication_status":"published","publist_id":"6814","article_number":"104201","oa_version":"Submitted Version","main_file_link":[{"url":"https://arxiv.org/abs/1610.02389","open_access":"1"}],"scopus_import":"1","month":"09","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"user_id":"2DF688A6-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","external_id":{"isi":["000409429300004"],"arxiv":["1610.02389"]},"acknowledgement":"We acknowledge useful discussions with V. We analyze the distribution of off-diagonal matrix elements of local operators across this transition in two different models of disordered spin chains. We show that the behavior of matrix elements can be used to characterize the breakdown of thermalization and to extract the many-body Thouless energy. We find that upon increasing the disorder strength the system enters a critical region around the many-body localization transition. The properties of the system in this region are: (i) the Thouless energy becomes smaller than the level spacing, (ii) the matrix elements show critical dependence on the energy difference, and (iii) the matrix elements, viewed as amplitudes of a fictitious wave function, exhibit strong multifractality. This critical region decreases with the system size, which we interpret as evidence for a diverging correlation length at the many-body localization transition. Our findings show that the correlation length becomes larger than the accessible system sizes in a broad range of disorder strength values and shed light on the critical behavior near the many-body localization transition.","lang":"eng"}],"publication_identifier":{"issn":["2469-9950"]},"citation":{"mla":"Serbyn, Maksym, et al. “Thouless Energy and Multifractality across the Many-Body Localization Transition.” Physical Review B, vol. 96, no. 10, 104201, American Physical Society, 2017, doi:10.1103/PhysRevB.96.104201.","apa":"Serbyn, M., Zlatko, P., & Abanin, D. The statistics of eigenenergies is known to be a powerful probe of crossovers between ergodic and integrable systems in simpler examples of quantum chaos. We consider the evolution of the spectral statistics across the MBLT, starting with mapping to a Brownian motion process that analytically relates the spectral properties to the statistics of matrix elements. We demonstrate that the flow from Wigner-Dyson to Poisson statistics is a two-stage process. First, a fractal enhancement of matrix elements upon approaching the MBLT from the delocalized side produces an effective power-law interaction between energy levels, and leads to a plasma model for level statistics. At the second stage, the gas of eigenvalues has local interactions and the level statistics belongs to a semi-Poisson universality class. We verify our findings numerically on the XXZ spin chain. We provide a microscopic understanding of the level statistics across the MBLT and discuss implications for the transition that are strong constraints on possible theories."}],"citation":{"mla":"Serbyn, Maksym, and Joel Moore. “Spectral Statistics across the Many-Body Localization Transition.” Physical Review B - Condensed Matter and Materials Physics, vol. 93, no. 4, 041424(R), American Physical Society, 2016, doi:10.1103/PhysRevB.93.041424.","apa":"Serbyn, M., & Moore, J. To investigate this phenomenon, we study a minimal electronic model of FeSe, with interactions that enhance nematic fluctuations. This model is sign problem free, and is simulated using determinant quantum Monte Carlo (DQMC). We developed a DQMC algorithm with parallel tempering, which proves to be an efficient source of global updates and allows us to access the region of strong interactions. Over a wide range of intermediate couplings, we observe superconductivity with an extended s-wave order parameter, along with enhanced, but short-ranged, q=(0,0) ferro-orbital (nematic) order. These results are consistent with approximate weak-coupling treatments that predict that nematic fluctuations lead to superconducting pairing. Surprisingly, in the parameter range under study, we do not observe nematic long-range order. Instead, at stronger coupling an unusual insulating phase with q=(π,π) antiferro-orbital order appears, which is missed by weak-coupling approximations.","lang":"eng"}],"publication_identifier":{"issn":["2469-9950"],"eissn":["2469-9969"]},"doi":"10.1103/PhysRevB.94.155127","citation":{"apa":"Dumitrescu, P., Serbyn, M., Scalettar, R., & Vishwanath, A. A simple kinetic model comprising only surface diffusion processes can explain all the experimentally observed compositional profiles for pyramid and dome islands grown in the 560-620°C range. From this model three-dimensional compositional maps were extracted. By performing annealing experiments a change in the composition of the domes was observed. This could be explained as the result of the islands' movement induced by alloying-driven energy minimization. Also in this case kinetically hindered bulk diffusion processes are not needed to explain the experimental observations.","lang":"eng"}],"citation":{"ama":"Katsaros G, Costantini G, Stoffel M, et al.
