In the current Part II we consider blow-up criteria and regularization phenomena. As in Part I we can allow nonlinearities with polynomial growth and rough initial values from critical spaces. In the first main result we obtain several new blow-up criteria for quasi- and semilinear stochastic evolution equations. In particular, for semilinear equations we obtain a Serrin type blow-up criterium, which extends a recent result of Prüss–Simonett–Wilke (J Differ Equ 264(3):2028–2074, 2018) to the stochastic setting. Blow-up criteria can be used to prove global well-posedness for SPDEs. As in Part I, maximal regularity techniques and weights in time play a central role in the proofs. Our second contribution is a new method to bootstrap Sobolev and Hölder regularity in time and space, which does not require smoothness of the initial data. The blow-up criteria are at the basis of these new methods. Moreover, in applications the bootstrap results can be combined with our blow-up criteria, to obtain efficient ways to prove global existence. This gives new results even in classical 𝐿2-settings, which we illustrate for a concrete SPDE. In future works in preparation we apply the results of the current paper to obtain global well-posedness results and regularity for several concrete SPDEs. These include stochastic Navier–Stokes equations, reaction– diffusion equations and the Allen–Cahn equation. Our setting allows to put these SPDEs into a more flexible framework, where less restrictions on the nonlinearities are needed, and we are able to treat rough initial values from critical spaces. Moreover, we will obtain higher-order regularity results.","lang":"eng"}],"intvolume":" 22","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"acknowledgement":"The authors thank Emiel Lorist for helpful comments. A partial triangulation of P is a full triangulation of some subset P′ of P containing all extreme points in P. A bistellar flip on a partial triangulation either flips an edge (called edge flip), removes a non-extreme point of degree 3, or adds a point in P∖P′ as vertex of degree 3. The bistellar flip graph has all partial triangulations as vertices, and a pair of partial triangulations is adjacent if they can be obtained from one another by a bistellar flip. The edge flip graph is defined with full triangulations as vertices, and edge flips determining the adjacencies. Lawson showed in the early seventies that these graphs are connected. The goal of this paper is to investigate the structure of these graphs, with emphasis on their vertex connectivity. For sets P of n points in the plane in general position, we show that the edge flip graph is ⌈n/2−2⌉-vertex connected, and the bistellar flip graph is (n−3)-vertex connected; both results are tight. The latter bound matches the situation for the subfamily of regular triangulations (i.e., partial triangulations obtained by lifting the points to 3-space and projecting back the lower convex hull), where (n−3)-vertex connectivity has been known since the late eighties through the secondary polytope due to Gelfand, Kapranov, & Zelevinsky and Balinski’s Theorem. For the edge flip-graph, we additionally show that the vertex connectivity is at least as large as (and hence equal to) the minimum degree (i.e., the minimum number of flippable edges in any full triangulation), provided that n is large enough. Our methods also yield several other results: (i) The edge flip graph can be covered by graphs of polytopes of dimension ⌈n/2−2⌉ (products of associahedra) and the bistellar flip graph can be covered by graphs of polytopes of dimension n−3 (products of secondary polytopes). (ii) A partial triangulation is regular, if it has distance n−3 in the Hasse diagram of the partial order of partial subdivisions from the trivial subdivision. (iii) All partial triangulations of a point set are regular iff the partial order of partial subdivisions has height n−3. (iv) There are arbitrarily large sets P with non-regular partial triangulations and such that every proper subset has only regular triangulations, i.e., there are no small certificates for the existence of non-regular triangulations."}],"publication":"Discrete & Computational Geometry","volume":68,"isi":1,"year":"2022","has_accepted_license":"1","publication_status":"published","date_published":"2022-11-14T00:00:00Z","author":[{"id":"36690CA2-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","full_name":"Wagner, Uli","first_name":"Uli","orcid":"0000-0002-1494-0568","last_name":"Wagner"},{"full_name":"Welzl, Emo","first_name":"Emo","last_name":"Welzl"}],"title":"Connectivity of triangulation flip graphs in the plane","oa":1,"scopus_import":"1","fulldoi":"https://doi.org/10.1007/s00454-022-00436-2","publication_identifier":{"eissn":["1432-0444"],"issn":["0179-5376"]},"citation":{"ama":"Wagner U, Welzl E. The primary focus of the study is placed on the emergence of drifting–rotating waves (DRW) that capture, in a relatively small domain, the main features of coherent structures typically observed in developed turbulence. The transitional dynamics of the subcritical region, far below the first instability of the laminar circular Couette flow, is determined by the upper and lower branches of DRW solutions originated at saddle-node bifurcations. The mechanism whereby these solutions self-sustain, and the chaotic dynamics they induce, are conspicuously reminiscent of other subcritical shear flows. Remarkably, the flow properties of DRW persist even as the Reynolds number is increased beyond the linear stability threshold of the base flow. Simulations in a narrow parallelogram domain stretched in the azimuthal direction to revolve around the apparatus a full turn confirm that self-sustained vortices eventually concentrate into a localised pattern. The resulting statistical steady state satisfactorily reproduces qualitatively, and to a certain degree also quantitatively, the topology and properties of spiral turbulence as calculated in a large periodic domain of sufficient aspect ratio that is representative of the real system.","lang":"eng"}],"status":"public","intvolume":" 951","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"acknowledgement":"K.D.’s research was supported by an Australian Research Council Discovery Early Career\r\nResearcher Award (DE170100171). Membrane-bound ESCRT-III filaments undergo a series of dramatic composition and geometry changes in the presence of an ATP-consuming Vps4 enzyme, which causes stepwise changes in the membrane morphology. We set out to understand the physical mechanisms involved in translating the changes in ESCRT-III polymer composition into membrane deformation. We have built a coarse-grained model in which ESCRT-III polymers of different geometries and mechanical properties are allowed to copolymerise and bind to a deformable membrane. By modelling ATP-driven stepwise depolymerisation of specific polymers, we identify mechanical regimes in which changes in filament composition trigger the associated membrane transition from a flat to a buckled state, and then to a tubule state that eventually undergoes scission to release a small cargo-loaded vesicle. We then characterise how the location and kinetics of polymer loss affects the extent of membrane deformation and the efficiency of membrane neck scission. Our results identify the near-minimal mechanical conditions for the operation of shape-shifting composite polymers that sever membrane necks."}],"status":"public","acknowledgement":"A.S . received an award from European Research Council (https://erc.europa.eu, “NEPA\"\r\n802960), and an award from the Royal Society (https://royalsociety.org, UF160266). In the superfluid phase, characterized by the spontaneous symmetry breaking of the U(1) symmetry, there is the coexistence of first and second sound. In the case of weakly-interacting repulsive bosons, we model the recent measurements of the sound velocities of 39K atoms in 2D obtained in the weakly-interacting regime and around the Berezinskii–Kosterlitz–Thouless (BKT) superfluid-to-normal transition temperature. In particular, we perform a quite accurate computation of the superfluid density and show that it is reasonably consistent with the experimental results. For superfluid attractive fermions, we calculate the first and second sound velocities across the whole BCS-BEC crossover. In the low-temperature regime, we reproduce the recent measurements of first-sound speed with 6Li atoms. We also predict that there is mixing between sound modes only in the finite-temperature BEC regime.","lang":"eng"}],"status":"public","intvolume":" 14","acknowledgement":"This research is partially supported by University of Padova, BIRD grant “Ultracold atoms\r\nin curved geometries”. This could be due to the non-equilibrium nature of eukaryotic regulation. Unfortunately, the space of possible non-equilibrium mechanisms is vast and predominantly uninteresting. The key question is therefore how this space can be navigated efficiently, to focus on mechanisms and models that are biologically relevant. In this review, we advocate for the normative role of theory—theory that prescribes rather than just describes—in providing such a focus. Theory should expand its remit beyond inferring mechanistic models from data, towards identifying non-equilibrium gene regulatory schemes that may have been evolutionarily selected, despite their energy consumption, because they are precise, reliable, fast, or otherwise outperform regulation at equilibrium. We illustrate our reasoning by toy examples for which we provide simulation code."}],"status":"public","intvolume":" 31","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"acknowledgement":"This work was supported through the Center for the Physics of Biological Function (PHYe1734030) and by National Institutes of Health Grants R01GM097275 and U01DK127429 (TG). A classic example is the joint convexity of the quantum relative entropy which is equivalent to the Data Processing Inequality. The latter says that quantum operations can never increase the relative entropy. The monotonicity versions often have many advantages, and often have direct physical application, as in the example just mentioned. Moreover, the monotonicity results are often valid for a larger class of maps than, say, quantum operations (which are completely positive). In this paper we prove several new monotonicity results, the first of which is a monotonicity theorem that has as a simple corollary a celebrated concavity theorem of Epstein. Our starting points are the monotonicity versions of the Lieb Concavity and the Lieb Convexity Theorems. We also give two new proofs of these in their general forms using interpolation. We then prove our new monotonicity theorems by several duality arguments."}],"publication_status":"published","year":"2022","has_accepted_license":"1","isi":1,"author":[{"full_name":"Carlen, Eric A.","last_name":"Carlen","first_name":"Eric A."},{"first_name":"Haonan","last_name":"Zhang","id":"D8F41E38-9E66-11E9-A9E2-65C2E5697425","full_name":"Zhang, Haonan"}],"title":"Monotonicity versions of Epstein's concavity theorem and related inequalities","date_published":"2022-12-01T00:00:00Z","tmp":{"short":"CC BY (4.0)","name":"Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International Public License (CC-BY 4.0)","image":"/images/cc_by.png","legal_code_url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/legalcode"},"fulldoi":"https://doi.org/10.1016/j.laa.2022.09.001","publication_identifier":{"issn":["0024-3795"]},"citation":{"ista":"Carlen EA, Zhang H. 2022. In contrast, many real-world chaotic phenomena, e.g., weather, arise in systems with many (formally infinite) degrees of freedom, which limits direct quantitative analysis of such systems using chaos theory. In the present work, we demonstrate that the hydrodynamic pilot-wave systems offer a bridge between low- and high-dimensional chaotic phenomena by allowing for a systematic study of how the former connects to the latter. Specifically, we present experimental results, which show the formation of low-dimensional chaotic attractors upon destabilization of regular dynamics and a final transition to high-dimensional chaos via the merging of distinct chaotic regions through a crisis bifurcation. Moreover, we show that the post-crisis dynamics of the system can be rationalized as consecutive scatterings from the nonattracting chaotic sets with lifetimes following exponential distributions. A clinically relevant example is the bacterial growth response to antibiotics, which is routinely characterized by dose–response curves. The shape of the dose–response curve varies drastically between antibiotics and plays a key role in treatment, drug interactions, and resistance evolution. However, the mechanisms shaping the dose–response curve remain largely unclear. Here, we show in Escherichia coli that the distinctively shallow dose–response curve of the antibiotic trimethoprim is caused by a negative growth-mediated feedback loop: Trimethoprim slows growth, which in turn weakens the effect of this antibiotic. At the molecular level, this feedback is caused by the upregulation of the drug target dihydrofolate reductase (FolA/DHFR). We show that this upregulation is not a specific response to trimethoprim but follows a universal trend line that depends primarily on the growth rate, irrespective of its cause. Rewiring the feedback loop alters the dose–response curve in a predictable manner, which we corroborate using a mathematical model of cellular resource allocation and growth. Our results indicate that growth-mediated feedback loops may shape drug responses more generally and could be exploited to design evolutionary traps that enable selection against drug resistance.","lang":"eng"}],"status":"public","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"acknowledgement":"This work was in part supported by Human Frontier Science Program GrantRGP0042/2013, Marie Curie Career Integration Grant303507, AustrianScience Fund (FWF) Grant P27201-B22, and German Research Foundation(DFG) Collaborative Research Center (SFB)1310to TB. Much of the existing literature on direct reciprocity assumes that all competing individuals use the same strategy space. Here, we study both learning and evolutionary dynamics of players that differ in the strategy space they explore. We focus on the infinitely repeated donation game and compare three natural strategy spaces: memory-1 strategies, which consider the last moves of both players, reactive strategies, which respond to the last move of the co-player, and unconditional strategies. These three strategy spaces differ in the memory capacity that is needed. We compute the long term average payoff that is achieved in a pairwise learning process. We find that smaller strategy spaces can dominate larger ones. For weak selection, unconditional players dominate both reactive and memory-1 players. For intermediate selection, reactive players dominate memory-1 players. Only for strong selection and low cost-to-benefit ratio, memory-1 players dominate the others. We observe that the supergame between strategy spaces can be a social dilemma: maximum payoff is achieved if both players explore a larger strategy space, but smaller strategy spaces dominate.","lang":"eng"}],"acknowledgement":"This work was supported by the European Research Council (https://erc.europa.eu/)\r\nCoG 863818 (ForM-SMArt) (to K.C.), and the European Research Council Starting Grant 850529: E-DIRECT (to C.H.). The criteria are formulated in terms of the initial distribution of mass (as opposed to previous almost-optimal results), reflecting the fact that mass is a locally conserved quantity for the thin-film equation. In the regime of weak slippage, our criteria are at the same time necessary and sufficient. The proof of our upper bounds on free boundary propagation is based on a strategy of “propagation of degeneracy” down to arbitrarily small spatial scales: We combine estimates on the local mass and estimates on energies to show that “degeneracy” on a certain space-time cylinder entails “degeneracy” on a spatially smaller space-time cylinder with the same time horizon. The derivation of our lower bounds on free boundary propagation is based on a combination of a monotone quantity and almost optimal estimates established previously by the second author with a new estimate connecting motion of mass to entropy production.","lang":"eng"}],"quality_controlled":"1","keyword":["Applied Mathematics","Analysis"],"external_id":{"arxiv":["1907.05342"],"isi":["000805689800001"]},"issue":"7","article_processing_charge":"No","publisher":"Taylor & Francis","_id":"12304","author":[{"full_name":"De Nitti, Nicola","first_name":"Nicola","last_name":"De Nitti"},{"orcid":"0000-0002-0479-558X","first_name":"Julian L","last_name":"Fischer","id":"2C12A0B0-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","full_name":"Fischer, Julian L"}],"title":"Sharp criteria for the waiting time phenomenon in solutions to the thin-film equation","date_published":"2022-07-01T00:00:00Z","year":"2022","publication_status":"published","isi":1,"day":"01","article_type":"original","citation":{"ama":"De Nitti N, Fischer JL. We assume that a diffuse interface already has developed and that it is in contact with the boundary ∂Ω. The boundary condition is designed in such a way that the limit problem is given by the mean curvature flow with constant α-contact angle. For α close to 90° we prove a local in time convergence result for well-prepared initial data for times when a smooth solution to the limit problem exists. Based on the latter we construct a suitable curvilinear coordinate system and carry out a rigorous asymptotic expansion for the Allen--Cahn equation with the nonlinear Robin boundary condition. Moreover, we show a spectral estimate for the corresponding linearized Allen--Cahn operator and with its aid we derive strong norm estimates for the difference of the exact and approximate solutions using a Gronwall-type argument.","lang":"eng"}],"language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"intvolume":" 54","status":"public"},{"abstract":[{"text":"Point-set topology is among the most abstract branches of mathematics in that it lacks tangible notions of distance, length, magnitude, order, and size. There is no shape, no geometry, no algebra, and no direction. Everything we are used to visualizing is gone. In the teaching and learning of mathematics, this can present a conundrum. Yet, this very property makes point set topology perfect for teaching and learning abstract mathematical concepts. It clears our minds of preconceived intuitions and expectations and forces us to think in new and creative ways. In this paper, we present guided investigations into topology through questions and thinking strategies that open up fascinating problems. They are intended for faculty who already teach or are thinking about teaching a class in topology or abstract mathematical reasoning for undergraduates. They can be used to build simple to challenging projects in topology, proofs, honors programs, and research experiences.","lang":"eng"}],"language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"intvolume":" 32","status":"public","volume":32,"publication":"PRIMUS","publisher":"Taylor & Francis","article_processing_charge":"No","_id":"12307","keyword":["Education","General Mathematics"],"quality_controlled":"1","issue":"5","date_published":"2022-05-28T00:00:00Z","author":[{"full_name":"Shipman, Barbara A.","last_name":"Shipman","first_name":"Barbara A."},{"full_name":"Stephenson, Elizabeth R","id":"2D04F932-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","orcid":"0000-0002-6862-208X","first_name":"Elizabeth R","last_name":"Stephenson"}],"title":"Tangible topology through the lens of limits","year":"2022","publication_status":"published","day":"28","article_type":"original","scopus_import":"1","fulldoi":"https://doi.org/10.1080/10511970.2021.1872750","citation":{"apa":"Shipman, B. Two popular solutions are based on a linear estimator 𝑥𝑥^L and a spectral estimator 𝑥𝑥^s. The former is a data-dependent linear combination of the columns of the measurement matrix, and its analysis is quite simple. The latter is the principal eigenvector of a data-dependent matrix, and a recent line of work has studied its performance. In this paper, we show how to optimally combine 𝑥𝑥^L and 𝑥𝑥^s. At the heart of our analysis is the exact characterization of the empirical joint distribution of (𝑥𝑥,𝑥𝑥^L,𝑥𝑥^s) in the high-dimensional limit. This allows us to compute the Bayes-optimal combination of 𝑥𝑥^L and 𝑥𝑥^s, given the limiting distribution of the signal 𝑥𝑥. When the distribution of the signal is Gaussian, then the Bayes-optimal combination has the form 𝜃𝑥𝑥^L+𝑥𝑥^s and we derive the optimal combination coefficient. In order to establish the limiting distribution of (𝑥𝑥,𝑥𝑥^L,𝑥𝑥^s), we design and analyze an approximate message passing algorithm whose iterates give 𝑥𝑥^L and approach 𝑥𝑥^s. Numerical simulations demonstrate the improvement of the proposed combination with respect to the two methods considered separately.","lang":"eng"}]},{"article_type":"original","day":"18","file":[{"file_size":705323,"file_name":"2022_ForumMathSigma_Henheik.pdf","file_id":"10646","relation":"main_file","date_updated":"2022-01-19T09:27:43Z","date_created":"2022-01-19T09:27:43Z","content_type":"application/pdf","creator":"cchlebak","checksum":"87592a755adcef22ea590a99dc728dd3","success":1,"access_level":"open_access"}],"file_date_updated":"2022-01-19T09:27:43Z","tmp":{"short":"CC BY (4.0)","name":"Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International Public License (CC-BY 4.0)","image":"/images/cc_by.png","legal_code_url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/legalcode"},"citation":{"apa":"Henheik, S.
