text: Mixed modes are observed in many low-mass evolved stars. They provide information
about core rotation rates of these stars, which are lower than predicted by stellar
evolution models. The mixed modes themselves have been invoked as an angular momentum
(AM) transport mechanism, but estimating their transport efficiency requires knowledge
of their amplitudes. We constrain, for the first time, the mixed-mode amplitudes
in 2D hydrodynamical simulations of a 1.3M⊙ red giant using the code MUSIC. We
perform two simulations with outer radial truncations at fractional radii ro/r⋆
= 0.90 and 0.98. We compare the modes in the simulation with those found using
both GYRE and a Dedalus eigenvalue solver. Excellent frequency agreement is found
for all p-dominated modes, with minor discrepancies for g-dominated modes, especially
in the frequency range [60, 240] μHz. We find excellent eigenfunction agreement
for all modes except those in this frequency range. According to empirical predictions,
the largest kinetic energies are located around Vmax= 312.μHz, but in both simulations,
the modes with frequencies of ν < 50 μHz have the largest kinetic energies. In
the simulation with r/r⋆ = 0.98, the simulated modes have extrapolated surface
velocities comparable to the empirical predictions, with the highest surface velocities
in a bell-shaped curve peaking around ν = 700 μHz. The extrapolated surface velocities
of the low-frequency modes are small and thus hard to observe, but their large
kinetic energies deeper in the interior could significantly impact AM transport,
which has not yet been investigated.

text: "Persistent revivals recently observed in Rydberg atom simulators have challenged
our understanding of thermalization and attracted much interest to the concept
of quantum many-body scars (QMBSs). QMBSs are non-thermal highly excited eigenstates
that coexist with typical eigenstates in the spectrum of many-body Hamiltonians,
and have since been reported in multiple theoretical models, including the so-called
PXP model, approximately realized by Rydberg simulators. At the same time, questions
of how common QMBSs are and in what models they are physically realized remain
open. In this Letter, we demonstrate that QMBSs exist in a broader family of models
that includes and generalizes PXP to longer-range constraints and states with
different periodicity. We show that in each model, multiple QMBS families can
be found. Each of them relies on a different approximate \U0001D530\U0001D532⁡(2)
algebra, leading to oscillatory dynamics in all cases. However, in contrast to
the PXP model, their observation requires launching dynamics from weakly entangled
initial states rather than from a product state. QMBSs reported here may be experimentally
probed using Rydberg atom simulator in the regime of longer-range Rydberg blockades."

text: "The internal dynamical properties of red giant stars have been explored extensively
in recent\r\nyears as a result of the increase in high precision data availability
from the space missions\r\nKepler and TESS (Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite),
and in this exploration, it has been\r\ndiscovered that some of these stars are
not behaving as expected. Red giants are stars that have\r\nevolved off of the
main sequence after having completed fusing hydrogen into helium in their\r\ncore.
Observational data shows that the cores are rotating significantly slower than
models can\r\nrecreate consistently across evolutionary stages. This discrepancy
has prompted investigation\r\ninto the efficiency of angular momentum transport
mechanisms and mixing processes including\r\nmeridional circulation, shear instability,
internal gravity waves, Tayler-Spruit dynamo, fossil\r\nmagnetic fields etc.,
to explain this behavior.\r\nAnalyzing seismic oscillations in stars, via asteroseismology,
is a powerful tool as it is the only\r\nway in which the deep stellar interior
can be probed and subsequently characterized; this is\r\npossible as global oscillations
modulating the stellar surface are effected by internal processes.\r\nFor red
    giants, p-modes (pressure modes; resonating through the entire star) and g-modes\r\n(gravity-modes;
resonating in the radiative interior) couple to create mixed modes. These\r\nmixed
modes give access to the otherwise hidden stellar interior as g-modes couple to
p-modes,\r\ndelivering information from the interior to the surface.\r\nInternal
magnetic signatures have been observationally confirmed in red giant stars via\r\nasteroseismology
and characterized in two ways. One being that dipole mixed modes with\r\nℓ = 1
    will display a global asymmetric frequency shift of its azimuthal components;
    where\r\nthe m = 0 and m = ±1 components of the ℓ = 1 dipole mode will be shifted
by two\r\ndifferent power laws, respectively. And the other being a reduced visibility
of dipole mixed\r\nmode amplitudes in the power spectra, where stars presenting
with this feature are denoted as\r\nsuppressed.\r\nSeveral studies of the suppressed
dipole mixed mode amplitudes have been carried out, but thus\r\nfar, no dedicated
    studies of the asymmetric frequency shifts of suppressed red giants have been\r\nconducted;
one reason being that the asymmetric frequency shifts cannot be characterized\r\nwhen
the dipole mixed mode amplitudes are severely reduced in many of the suppressed
    stars.\r\nSincefullysuppressedstarsdonothavedetectablemixed-modestoevaluate, partiallysuppressed\r\nstars,
that is, red giant stars presenting with suppressed dipole mixed modes in select
parts of\r\ntheir power spectra rather than across the entire spectra, will be
the subject of this study as\r\nthe respective mode amplitudes are still visible
at high frequencies.\r\nAs such, this study will search for asymmetric frequency
shifts on the dipole mixed\r\nmodes of partially suppressed red giant stars; the
aim here is to investigate if both\r\nmode suppression and magnetic shifting of
    dipole mixed modes occur simultaneously.\r\nThisstudywillbeconductedbycreatingapipelinetoestimatepriorsofasteroseismicparameters,\r\nuse
the priors to model the power spectra with the stellar modeling code sloscillations_ISTA,\r\nand
perform a Bayesian fit of the parameters with the simulated data on the star KIC
6975038,\r\na target with partially suppressed dipolar mode amplitudes identified
in the literature, to fit its\r\nmagnetic parameters. I present a novel method
to model the stellar power spectra of\r\npartially suppressed red giants by application
of a sigmoid profile to the ℓ= 1 dipolar\r\nmode component of the spectra. With
the results of this study I aim at constraining\r\nthe cause of this partial dipole
mode amplitude suppression, allowing for more detailed\r\nstudies regarding their
astrophysical nature. Furthermore, the long term hope for the method\r\nused in
this study will be to expand the sample of partially suppressed red giants and
    fit their\r\nasteroseismic parameters accordingly."

text: We show that Laplace isospectral deformations within a conformal class of
generic Liouville metrics on the two-dimensional torus that are linear in the
deformation parameter are necessarily trivial. Two of the main ingredients in
our proof are a noncancellation result for the wave trace and an analysis of the
second order variational formula for the energy functional associated to closed
geodesics. Noncancellation allows us to detect parts of the length spectrum from
the Laplace spectrum and conclude rational integrability for the deformed geodesic
flow (Liouville metrics are folklorically conjectured to be the only Riemannian
metrics with integrable geodesic flow on the torus). We then use the second variational
formula to show how the preservation of a single rational torus is sufficient
to conclude triviality of the deformation, assuming linearity. We also present
some evidence that our hypothesis of linearity may indeed be necessary.

text: "This thesis explores advancements in quantum remote sensing and non-equilibrium
phase\r\ntransitions in the microwave regime, with a focus on dissipative phase
transitions and quantumenhanced sensing.\r\nIn the first project, I experimentally
studied photon blockade breakdown as a dissipative phase\r\ntransition in a zero-dimensional
cavity-qubit system. By defining an appropriate thermodynamic\r\nlimit, we demonstrated
that the observed bistability is a genuine signature of a first-order\r\nphase
transition in this system. This work provides insight into non-equilibrium quantum\r\ndynamics
and phase transitions in driven-dissipative open quantum systems.\r\nThe second
project focuses on the experimental realization of a phase-conjugate receiver
for\r\nquantum illumination (QI), a quantum sensing protocol that enhances target
detection in noisy\r\nenvironments using entangled light. While an ideal spontaneous
parametric down-conversion\r\n(SPDC) source and receiver could, in theory, provide
up to a 6 dB advantage over classical\r\nillumination, no such ideal receiver
exists. Instead, we explore an experimental realization of a\r\nphase-conjugate
receiver for QI in the microwave regime at millikelvin temperatures using a\r\nJosephson
parametric converter (JPC) as a source of continuous-variable Gaussian entangled\r\nsignal-idler
pairs, where a maximum 3 dB advantage is theoretically achievable. We investigate\r\nkey
experimental limitations that constrain practical QI performance, contributing
    to the\r\ndevelopment of quantum-enhanced sensing.\r\nAdditionally, this thesis
presents efficient digital signal processing (DSP) techniques implemented in C++
and Python in collaboration with Przemysław Zieliński and Luka Drmić. These\r\nmethods,
optimized using the Intel Integrated Performance Primitives (IPP) library, have
been\r\nessential in data acquisition, noise filtering, and correlation analysis
across multiple research\r\nprojects. Although not real-time, these DSP techniques
significantly enhance the accuracy of\r\nquantum measurements.\r\nOverall, this
thesis advances quantum-enhanced sensing by establishing the thermodynamic\r\nlimit
in a single transmon-cavity system and experimentally exploring a phase-conjugate
receiver\r\nfor QI. These findings contribute to quantum metrology, particularly
for weak signal detection\r\nand remote sensing in noisy environments.\r\n"

text: Frequency-stable lasers form the back bone of precision measurements in science
and technology. Such lasers typically attain their stability through frequency
locking to reference cavities. State-of-the-art locking performances to date had
been achieved using frequency modulation based methods, complemented with active
drift cancellation systems. We demonstrate an all passive, modulation-free laser-cavity
locking technique (squash locking) that utilizes changes in spatial beam ellipticity
for error signal generation, and a coherent polarization post-selection for noise
resilience. By comparing two identically built proof-of-principle systems, we
show a frequency locking instability of 5×10−7 relative to
the cavity linewidth at 10 s averaging. The results surpass the demonstrated performances
of methods engineered over the last five decades, potentially enabling an advancement
in the precision control of lasers, while creating avenues for bridging the performance
gaps between industrial grade lasers with scientific ones due to the afforded
    simplicity and scalability.

text: The epitaxial growth of a strained Ge layer, which is a promising candidate
for the channel material of a hole spin qubit, has been demonstrated on 300 mm
Si wafers using commercially available Si0.3Ge0.7 strain relaxed buffer (SRB)
layers. The assessment of the layer and the interface qualities for a buried strained
Ge layer embedded in Si0.3Ge0.7 layers is reported. The XRD reciprocal space mapping
confirmed that the reduction of the growth temperature enables the 2-dimensional
growth of the Ge layer fully strained with respect to the Si0.3Ge0.7. Nevertheless,
dislocations at the top and/or bottom interface of the Ge layer were observed
by means of electron channeling contrast imaging, suggesting the importance of
the careful dislocation assessment. The interface abruptness does not depend on
the selection of the precursor gases, but it is strongly influenced by the growth
temperature which affects the coverage of the surface H-passivation. The mobility
    of 2.7 × 105 cm2/Vs is promising, while the low percolation density of 3 × 1010
/cm2 measured with a Hall-bar device at 7 K illustrates the high quality of the
heterostructure thanks to the high Si0.3Ge0.7 SRB quality.

Europe programme under the Grant Agreement 101069515 – IGNITE. Siltronic AG is acknowledged

text: Mechanisms for suppressing thermalization in disorder-free many-body systems,
such as Hilbert space fragmentation and quantum many-body scars, have recently
attracted much interest in foundations of quantum statistical physics and potential
quantum information processing applications. However, their sensitivity to realistic
effects such as finite temperature remains largely unexplored. Here, we have utilized
IBM's Kolkata quantum processor to demonstrate an unexpected robustness of quantum
many-body scars at finite temperatures when the system is prepared in a thermal
Gibbs ensemble. We identify such robustness in the PXP model, which describes
quantum many-body scars in experimental systems of Rydberg atom arrays and ultracold
atoms in tilted Bose--Hubbard optical lattices. By contrast, other theoretical
models which host exact quantum many-body scars are found to lack such robustness,
and their scarring properties quickly decay with temperature. Our study sheds
light on the important differences between scarred models in terms of their algebraic
structures, which impacts their resilience to finite temperature.

text: Atom-based quantum simulators have had many successes in tackling challenging
quantum many-body problems, owing to the precise and dynamical control that they
provide over the systems' parameters. They are, however, often optimized to address
a specific type of problem. Here, we present the design and implementation of
a 6Li-based quantum gas platform that provides wide-ranging capabilities and is
able to address a variety of quantum many-body problems. Our two-chamber architecture
relies on a robust combination of gray molasses and optical transport from a laser-cooling
chamber to a glass cell with excellent optical access. There, we first create
unitary Fermi superfluids in a three-dimensional axially symmetric harmonic trap
and characterize them using in situ thermometry, reaching temperatures below 20
nK. This allows us to enter the deep superfluid regime with samples of extreme
diluteness, where the interparticle spacing is sufficiently large for direct single-atom
imaging. Second, we generate optical lattice potentials with triangular and honeycomb
geometry in which we study diffraction of molecular Bose-Einstein condensates,
and show how going beyond the Kapitza-Dirac regime allows us to unambiguously
distinguish between the two geometries. With the ability to probe quantum many-body
physics in both discrete and continuous space, and its suitability for bulk and
single-atom imaging, our setup represents an important step towards achieving
    a wide-scope quantum simulator.

text: Coupling of orbital motion to a spin degree of freedom gives rise to various
transport phenomena in quantum systems that are beyond the standard paradigms
of classical physics. Here, we discuss features of spin-orbit dynamics that can
be visualized using a classical model with two coupled angular degrees of freedom.
Specifically, we demonstrate classical ‘spin’ filtering through our model and
show that the interplay between angular degrees of freedom and dissipation can
    lead to asymmetric ‘spin’ transport.

text: The power factor of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate)
(PEDOT:PSS) film can be significantly improved by optimizing the oxidation level
of the film in oxidation and reduction processes. However, precise control over
the oxidation and reduction effects in PEDOT:PSS remains a challenge, which greatly
    sacrifices both S and σ. Here, we propose a two-step post-treatment using a mixture
of ethylene glycol (EG) and Arginine (Arg) and sulfuric acid (H2SO4) in sequence
to engineer high-performance PEDOT:PSS thermoelectric films. The high-polarity
EG dopant removes the excess non-ionized PSS and induces benzenoid-to-quinoid
conformational change in the PEDOT:PSS films. In particular, basic amino acid
Arg tunes the oxidation level of PEDOT:PSS and prevents the films from over-oxidation
    during H2SO4 post-treatment, leading to increased S. The following H2SO4 post-treatment
further induces highly orientated lamellar stacking microstructures to increase
    σ, yielding a maximum power factor of 170.6 μW m−1 K−2 at 460 K. Moreover, a novel
trigonal-shape thermoelectric device is designed and assembled by the as-prepared
PEDOT:PSS films in order to harvest heat via a vertical temperature gradient.
An output power density of 33 μW cm−2 is generated at a temperature difference
of 40 K, showing the potential application for low-grade wearable electronic devices.

text: It may come as a surprise that a phenomenon as ubiquitous and prominent as
the transition from laminar to turbulent flow has resisted combined efforts by
physicists, engineers and mathematicians, and remained unresolved for almost one
and a half centuries. In recent years, various studies have proposed analogies
to directed percolation, a well-known universality class in statistical mechanics,
which describes a non-equilibrium phase transition from a fluctuating active phase
into an absorbing state. It is this unlikely relation between the multiscale,
high-dimensional dynamics that signify the transition process in virtually all
flows of practical relevance, and the arguably most basic non-equilibrium phase
transition, that so far has mainly been the subject of model studies, which I
    review in this Perspective.

on a local charge-driving parameter whose spatial variations lead to a stochastic
origin for charge exchange. Measuring the charge transfer from individual granular
spheres after contacts with substrates of the same material, we find instead a
“global” charging behavior, coherent over the sample’s whole surface. Cleaning
and baking samples fully resets charging magnitude and direction, which indicates
the underlying global parameter is not intrinsic to the material, but acquired
from its history. Charging behavior is randomly and irreversibly affected by changes
in relative humidity, hinting at a mechanism where adsorbates, in particular,
water, are fundamental to the charge-transfer process.

text: 'Lead halide perovskites enjoy a number of remarkable optoelectronic properties.
To explain their origin, it is necessary to study how electromagnetic fields interact
with these systems. We address this problem here by studying two classical quantities:
Faraday rotation and the complex refractive index in a paradigmatic perovskite
CH3NH3PbBr3 in a broad wavelength range. We find that the minimal coupling of
electromagnetic fields to the k⋅p Hamiltonian is insufficient to describe the
observed data even on the qualitative level. To amend this, we demonstrate that
there exists a relevant atomic-level coupling between electromagnetic fields and
the spin degree of freedom. This spin-electric coupling allows for quantitative
description of a number of previous as well as present experimental data. In particular,
we use it here to show that the Faraday effect in lead halide perovskites is dominated
by the Zeeman splitting of the energy levels and has a substantial beyond-Becquerel
contribution. Finally, we present general symmetry-based phenomenological arguments
that in the low-energy limit our effective model includes all basis coupling terms
to the electromagnetic field in the linear order.'

text: "Nominally identical materials exchange net electric charge during contact
through a mechanism that is still debated. ‘Mosaic models’, in which surfaces
are presumed to consist of a random patchwork of microscopic donor/acceptor sites,
offer an appealing explanation for this phenomenon. However, recent experiments
have shown that global differences persist even between same-material samples,
which the standard mosaic framework does not account for. Here, we expand the
mosaic framework by incorporating global differences in the densities of donor/acceptor
sites. We develop\r\nan analytical model, backed by numerical simulations, that
smoothly connects the global and deterministic charge transfer of different materials
to the local and stochastic mosaic picture normally associated with identical
materials. Going further, we extend our model to explain the effect of contact
asymmetries during sliding, providing a plausible explanation for reversal of
charging sign that has been observed experimentally."

text: Recent experimental advances have inspired the development of theoretical
tools to describe the non-equilibrium dynamics of quantum systems. Among them
an exact representation of quantum spin systems in terms of classical stochastic
processes has been proposed. Here we provide first steps towards the extension
of this stochastic approach to bosonic systems by considering the one-dimensional
quantum quartic oscillator. We show how to exactly parameterize the time evolution
of this prototypical model via the dynamics of a set of classical variables. We
interpret these variables as stochastic processes, which allows us to propose
a novel way to numerically simulate the time evolution of the system. We benchmark
our findings by considering analytically solvable limits and providing alternative
    derivations of known results.

text: We present a numerical analysis of spin-1/2 fermions in a one-dimensional
harmonic potential in the presence of a magnetic point-like impurity at the center
of the trap. The model represents a few-body analogue of a magnetic impurity in
the vicinity of an s-wave superconductor. Already for a few particles we find
a ground-state level crossing between sectors with different fermion parities.
We interpret this crossing as a few-body precursor of a quantum phase transition,
which occurs when the impurity "breaks" a Cooper pair. This picture is further
corroborated by analyzing density-density correlations in momentum space. Finally,
we discuss how the system may be realized with existing cold-atoms platforms.

text: The self-assembly of nanoparticles driven by small molecules or ions may produce
colloidal superlattices with features and properties reminiscent of those of metals
or semiconductors. However, to what extent the properties of such supramolecular
crystals actually resemble those of atomic materials often remains unclear. Here,
we present coarse-grained molecular simulations explicitly demonstrating how a
behavior evocative of that of semiconductors may emerge in a colloidal superlattice.
As a case study, we focus on gold nanoparticles bearing positively charged groups
that self-assemble into FCC crystals via mediation by citrate counterions. In
silico ohmic experiments show how the dynamically diverse behavior of the ions
in different superlattice domains allows the opening of conductive ionic gates
above certain levels of applied electric fields. The observed binary conductive/nonconductive
behavior is reminiscent of that of conventional semiconductors, while, at a supramolecular
level, crossing the “band gap” requires a sufficient electrostatic stimulus to
break the intermolecular interactions and make ions diffuse throughout the superlattice’s
    cavities.
