text: High-voltage disordered spinel LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 is a promising cathode material
for high power density in lithium-ion batteries. However, it suffers from poor
cycle life associated with the rock-salt phase transformation. This study presents
a straightforward synthesis approach to enhance the electrochemical performance
of LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 through a synergistic solid-state modification with LiF and
AlF3. This dual modification promotes rapid Li⁺ diffusion, enables near-complete
delithiation/lithiation, approaching the theoretical capacity of disordered LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4,
and, more importantly, effectively mitigates the formation of the rock-salt phase,
thereby enhancing structural stability, as confirmed by operando X-ray absorption
spectroscopy (XAS) and synchrotron X-ray diffraction (SXRD). As a result, the
optimized LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 (10 mg AlF3 + 30 mg LiF) delivers high reversible capacities
    of 142.1, 139.1, 129.2, 121.6, 110.3, 93.5, and 76.1 mAh∙g−1 at 0.2C, 0.5C, 1.0C,
2.0C, 3.0C, 4.0C, and 5.0C, respectively. Full cells using graphite as the anode
and a high-loading cathode exhibit excellent cycling performance. They retain
80% of their capacity after 200 cycles at 0.5C within a voltage window of 3.5–4.9
V with cathode loading of 11 mg∙cm−2. The findings of this study will significantly
advance high-power LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 materials, offering improved battery life and
thereby enhancing their potential for practical applications.

text: Tissue regeneration requires de novo patterning, which has been proposed to
be facilitated by cellular heterogeneity. Yet how such heterogeneities are integrated
with the mechanochemical state of the tissue and stabilized at the chromatin level
into stable, spatially organized fates remains poorly understood. Using in vivo
mouse intestinal regeneration models and organoids, we identify a critical density
regime that produces a permissive window for heterogeneity in the mechanosensor
Yes-associated protein 1 (YAP1). We show that YAP1 heterogeneity is coupled to
lineage-biased chromatin accessibility and is decoded through FOXA1, which integrates
the permissive chromatin state to Delta-Notch supracellular feedback and lineage
commitment. This circuit generates fate bistability and preserves a memory of
transient YAP1 activity, thereby maintaining spatial patterning as tissues return
to homeostasis after injury. Together, our findings establish a multiscale framework
in which tissue-scale mechanics tune single-cell competence and, through FOXA1-mediated
bistability, convert transient heterogeneity into stable and self-organized tissue
    architecture.

text: Far from being static structures, it is now well accepted that proteins are
highly dynamic entities even in the solid state. Here, we review recent progress
in application of magic-angle spinning (MAS) NMR for studying the site-specific
dynamics of proteins, as assessed using spin-relaxation and measurement of anisotropic
spin interactions. We focus on the types of experimental data that are available,
and how best to access the information which is provided by these experimental
measurements; in particular, we provide a retrospective on the field in light
of recent advances in analytical methodologies, which have led to a slow paradigm
shift in how we interpret relaxation rate constant measurements made in the solid
    state.

text: "Uncovering the genetic architecture of complex traits and pinpointing causal
molecular drivers require the ability to distinguish true signals from noise within
massive, high-dimensional omics datasets. To extract meaningful biological insights
from these datasets, such as identifying causal genetic variants and proteins,
scalable and accurate inference methods are essential. To this end, this thesis
develops novel Bayesian inference frameworks based on Vector Approximate Message
Passing and demonstrates their effectiveness in the modeling of disease onset
times and quantitative physical and clinical measures.\r\n\r\nFirst, we introduce
gVAMP, a Bayesian framework tailored for Genome-Wide Association Studies that
enables the joint modeling of quantitative complex traits across millions of genetic
variants. gVAMP demonstrates superior accuracy in variable selection and out-of-sample
polygenic risk prediction compared to state-of-the-art approaches. We model human
height using 17 million whole-genome sequence variants from the UK Biobank, incorporating
a vast number of rare variants and revealing novel associations. gVAMP achieves
a prediction accuracy of approximately 46% for human height, representing the
highest reported performance for this trait to date. \r\n\r\nSecond, we present
vampW, a Bayesian framework for survival analysis applied to proteomic data. By
effectively handling right-censoring and complex protein dependencies within the
UK Biobank Pharma Proteomics Project dataset, vampW identifies 219 protein associations
across 24 disease outcomes, the majority of which are not among the top marginal
discoveries. We further adjust protein levels for exponential age effects, yielding
1,308 associations and highlighting the sensitivity of the analysis to the chosen
age-correction methodology. Finally, vampW improves upon the variable selection
capabilities of the commonly used (penalized) variants of the Cox proportional
hazards model and delivers state-of-the-art out-of-sample prediction of disease
onset times.\r\n\r\nCollectively, these methods provide powerful tools for dissecting
the genetic architecture of complex traits and the proteomic drivers of disease
onset. Furthermore, by delivering accurate polygenic risk scores and precise predictions
of onset times, this work advances the capabilities of personalized medicine and
    clinical risk stratification."

text: Wildfires are increasing in frequency, intensity, and extent globally due
to climate change and they can alter forest composition, structure, and function.
The destruction and subsequent regrowth of young vegetation can modify the ecosystem
evapotranspiration and downstream water availability. However, the response of
forest recovery on hydrology is not well known with even the sign of evapotranspiration
and water yield changes following forest fires being uncertain across the globe.
Here, we quantify the effects of forest regrowth after catastrophic wildfires
on evapotranspiration and runoff in the world's tallest angiosperm forest (Eucalyptus
regnans) in Australia. We combine eddy covariance measurements including pre-
and post-fire periods, mechanistic ecohydrological modeling and then extend the
analysis spatially to multiple fires in eucalypt-dominated forests in south-eastern
Australia by utilizing remote sensing. We find a fast recovery of evapotranspiration
which reaches and exceeds pre-fire values within 2 years after the bushfire, a
result confirmed by eddy covariance data, remote sensing, and modeling. Such a
fast evapotranspiration recovery is likely generalizable to tall eucalypt forests
in south-eastern Australia as shown by remote sensing. Once climate variability
is discounted, ecohydrological modeling shows evapotranspiration rates from the
recovering forest which reach peak values of +20% evapotranspiration 3 years post-fire.
As a result, modeled runoff decreases substantially. Contrary to previous research,
we find that the increase in modeled evapotranspiration is largely caused by the
aerodynamic effects of a much shorter forest height leading to higher surface
temperature, higher humidity gradients and therefore increased transpiration.
However, increases in evapotranspiration as well as decreases in runoff caused
by the young forest are constrained by energy and water limitations. Our result
of an increase in evapotranspiration due to aerodynamic warming in a shorter forest
after wildfires could occur in many parts of the world experiencing forest disturbances.

text: 'We introduce a multi-material non-manifold mesh-based surface tracking algorithm
that converts self-intersections into topological changes. Our algorithm generalizes
prior work on manifold surface tracking with topological changes: it preserves
surface features like mesh-based methods, and it robustly handles topological
changes like level set methods. Our method also offers improved efficiency and
robustness over the state of the art. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the
approach on a range of examples, including complex soap film simulations with
thousands of interacting bubbles, and boolean unions of non-manifold meshes consisting
    of millions of triangles.'

text: Physics simulation in computer graphics can bring triangle meshes into topologically
invalid states. The method in this thesis contributed to Heiss-Synak* and Kalinov*
et al. [2024] who devised a non-manifold hybrid surface tracker—a surface tracker
that repairs explicit non-manifold triangle meshes with the help of the implicit
domain. Specifically, this thesis provides an algorithm for filling the holes
that are left after removing problematic parts of the mesh.

text: In this paper we consider the stochastic primitive equation for geophysical
flows subject to transport noise and turbulent pressure. Admitting very rough
noise terms, the global existence and uniqueness of solutions to this stochastic
partial differential equation are proven using stochastic maximal L² regularity,
the theory of critical spaces for stochastic evolution equations, and global a
priori bounds. Compared to other results in this direction, we do not need any
smallness assumption on the transport noise which acts directly on the velocity
field and we also allow rougher noise terms. The adaptation to Stratonovich type
noise and, more generally, to variable viscosity and/or conductivity are discussed
    as well.

text: Tattoos are a highly popular medium, with both artistic and medical applications.
Although the mechanical process of tattoo application has evolved historically,
the results are reliant on the artisanal skill of the artist. This can be especially
challenging for some skin tones, or in cases where artists lack experience. We
provide the first systematic overview of tattooing as a computational fabrication
technique. We built an automated tattooing rig and a recipe for the creation of
silicone sheets mimicking realistic skin tones, which allowed us to create an
accurate model predicting tattoo appearance. This enables several exciting applications
including tattoo previewing, color retargeting, novel ink spectra optimization,
    color-accurate prosthetics, and more.

text: Coherent flows of self-propelled particles are characterized by vortices and
jets that sustain chaotic flows, referred to as active turbulence. Here, we reveal
a crossover between defect-free active turbulence and active turbulence laden
with topological defects. Interestingly, we show that concurrent to the crossover
from defect-free to defect-laden active turbulence is the restoration of the previously
broken SO(2) symmetry signaled by the fast decay of the two-point correlations.
By stability analyses of the topological charge density field, we provide theoretical
insights on the criterion for the crossover to the defect-laden active turbulent
state. Despite the distinct symmetry features between these two active turbulence
regimes, the flow fluctuations exhibit universal statistical scaling behaviors
at large scales, while the spectrum of polarity fluctuations decays exponentially
at small length scales compared to the active energy injection length. These findings
reveal a dynamical crossover between distinct spatiotemporal organization patterns
    in polar active matter.

text: In this paper, we study the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the spiked invariant
multiplicative models when the randomness is from Haar matrices. We establish
the limits of the outlier eigenvalues λˆi and the generalized components (⟨v,uˆi⟩
for any deterministic vector v) of the outlier eigenvectors uˆi with optimal convergence
rates. Moreover, we prove that the non-outlier eigenvalues stick with those of
the unspiked matrices and the non-outlier eigenvectors are delocalized. The results
also hold near the so-called BBP transition and for degenerate spikes. On one
hand, our results can be regarded as a refinement of the counterparts of [12]
under additional regularity conditions. On the other hand, they can be viewed
as an analog of [34] by replacing the random matrix with i.i.d. entries with Haar
    random matrix.

text: "The Kirchhoff rod model describes the bending and twisting of slender elastic
rods in three dimensions, and has been widely studied to enable the prediction
of how a rod will deform, given its geometry and boundary conditions. In this
work, we study a number of inverse problems with the goal of computing the geometry
of a straight rod that will automatically deform to match a curved target shape
after attaching its endpoints to a support structure. Our solution lets us finely
control the static equilibrium state of a rod by varying the cross-sectional profiles
along its length.\r\nWe also show that the set of physically realizable equilibrium
states admits a concise geometric description in terms of linear line complexes,
which leads to very efficient computational design algorithms. Implemented in
an interactive software tool, they allow us to convert three-dimensional hand-drawn
spline curves to elastic rods, and give feedback about the feasibility and practicality
of a design in real time. We demonstrate the efficacy of our method by designing
and manufacturing several physical prototypes with applications to interior design
    and soft robotics."

text: "We revisit two basic Direct Simulation Monte Carlo Methods to model aggregation
kinetics and extend them for aggregation processes with collisional fragmentation
(shattering). We test the performance and accuracy of the extended methods and
compare their performance with efficient deterministic finite-difference method
applied to the same model. We validate the stochastic methods on the test problems
and apply them to verify the existence of oscillating regimes in the aggregation-fragmentation
kinetics recently detected in deterministic simulations. We confirm the emergence
of steady oscillations of densities in such systems and prove the stability of
the\r\noscillations with respect to fluctuations and noise."

text: In the class of strictly convex smooth boundaries each of which has no strip
around its boundary foliated by invariant curves, we prove that the Taylor coefficients
of the “normalized” Mather’s β-function are invariant under C∞-conjugacies. In
contrast, we prove that any two elliptic billiard maps are C0-conjugate near their
respective boundaries, and C∞-conjugate, near the boundary and away from a line
passing through the center of the underlying ellipse. We also prove that, if the
billiard maps corresponding to two ellipses are topologically conjugate, then
    the two ellipses are similar.

text: ESCRT-III filaments are composite cytoskeletal polymers that can constrict
and cut cell membranes from the inside of the membrane neck. Membrane-bound ESCRT-III
filaments undergo a series of dramatic composition and geometry changes in the
presence of an ATP-consuming Vps4 enzyme, which causes stepwise changes in the
membrane morphology. We set out to understand the physical mechanisms involved
in translating the changes in ESCRT-III polymer composition into membrane deformation.
We have built a coarse-grained model in which ESCRT-III polymers of different
geometries and mechanical properties are allowed to copolymerise and bind to a
deformable membrane. By modelling ATP-driven stepwise depolymerisation of specific
polymers, we identify mechanical regimes in which changes in filament composition
trigger the associated membrane transition from a flat to a buckled state, and
then to a tubule state that eventually undergoes scission to release a small cargo-loaded
vesicle. We then characterise how the location and kinetics of polymer loss affects
the extent of membrane deformation and the efficiency of membrane neck scission.
Our results identify the near-minimal mechanical conditions for the operation
of shape-shifting composite polymers that sever membrane necks.

text: Models of transcriptional regulation that assume equilibrium binding of transcription
factors have been less successful at predicting gene expression from sequence
in eukaryotes than in bacteria. This could be due to the non-equilibrium nature
of eukaryotic regulation. Unfortunately, the space of possible non-equilibrium
mechanisms is vast and predominantly uninteresting. The key question is therefore
how this space can be navigated efficiently, to focus on mechanisms and models
that are biologically relevant. In this review, we advocate for the normative
role of theory—theory that prescribes rather than just describes—in providing
such a focus. Theory should expand its remit beyond inferring mechanistic models
from data, towards identifying non-equilibrium gene regulatory schemes that may
have been evolutionarily selected, despite their energy consumption, because they
are precise, reliable, fast, or otherwise outperform regulation at equilibrium.
We illustrate our reasoning by toy examples for which we provide simulation code.

text: We report frictional drag reduction and a complete flow relaminarization of
elastic turbulence (ET) at vanishing inertia in a viscoelastic channel flow past
an obstacle. We show that the intensity of the observed elastic waves and wall-normal
vorticity correlate well with the measured drag above the onset of ET. Moreover,
we find that the elastic wave frequency grows with the Weissenberg number, and
at sufficiently high frequency it causes a decay of the elastic waves, resulting
in ET attenuation and drag reduction. Thus, this allows us to substantiate a physical
mechanism, involving the interaction of elastic waves with wall-normal vorticity
fluctuations, leading to the drag reduction and relaminarization phenomena at
    low Reynolds number.

text: 'In repeated interactions, players can use strategies that respond to the
outcome of previous rounds. Much of the existing literature on direct reciprocity
assumes that all competing individuals use the same strategy space. Here, we study
both learning and evolutionary dynamics of players that differ in the strategy
space they explore. We focus on the infinitely repeated donation game and compare
three natural strategy spaces: memory-1 strategies, which consider the last moves
of both players, reactive strategies, which respond to the last move of the co-player,
and unconditional strategies. These three strategy spaces differ in the memory
capacity that is needed. We compute the long term average payoff that is achieved
in a pairwise learning process. We find that smaller strategy spaces can dominate
larger ones. For weak selection, unconditional players dominate both reactive
and memory-1 players. For intermediate selection, reactive players dominate memory-1
players. Only for strong selection and low cost-to-benefit ratio, memory-1 players
dominate the others. We observe that the supergame between strategy spaces can
be a social dilemma: maximum payoff is achieved if both players explore a larger
strategy space, but smaller strategy spaces dominate.'

text: Redox mediators could catalyse otherwise slow and energy-inefficient cycling
of Li-S and Li-O 2 batteries by shuttling electrons/holes between the electrode
and the solid insulating storage materials. For mediators to work efficiently
they need to oxidize the solid with fast kinetics yet the lowest possible overpotential.
Here, we found that when the redox potentials of mediators are tuned via, e.g.,
Li + concentration in the electrolyte, they exhibit distinct threshold potentials,
where the kinetics accelerate several-fold within a range as small as 10 mV. This
phenomenon is independent of types of mediators and electrolyte. The acceleration
originates from the overpotentials required to activate fast Li + /e – extraction
and the following chemical step at specific abundant surface facets. Efficient
redox catalysis at insulating solids requires therefore carefully considering
the surface conditions of the storage materials and electrolyte-dependent redox
potentials, which may be tuned by salt concentrations or solvents.
