Our scheme utilizes coherent averaging across a chain of \r\n optomechanical cavities, unidirectionally coupled via a laser beam. As the beam passes through the cavities, it accumulates phase shifts induced by a common external force acting on the mechanical elements. Remarkably, this fully classical approach achieves the sensitivity scaling typically associated with quantum-enhanced protocols, providing a robust and experimentally feasible route to precision sensing. Potential applications range from high-sensitivity gravitational field measurements at the Large Hadron Collider to probing dark matter interactions and detecting gravitational waves. This work opens a new pathway for leveraging coherent light-matter interactions for force sensing.","lang":"eng"}],"author":[{"id":"fdac3bd4-d1c1-11ef-aaa4-fad05dc21577","full_name":"Marchese, Marta M","first_name":"Marta M","last_name":"Marchese"},{"first_name":"Daniel","full_name":"Braun, Daniel","last_name":"Braun"},{"last_name":"Nimmrichter","first_name":"Stefan","full_name":"Nimmrichter, Stefan"},{"first_name":"Dennis","full_name":"Rätzel, Dennis","last_name":"Rätzel"}],"external_id":{"arxiv":["2602.08981"]},"date_created":"2026-09-17T11:06:23Z","doi":"10.1088/1367-2630/ae8b16","article_processing_charge":"Yes","publication_status":"published","publication_identifier":{"eissn":["1367-2630"]},"oa_version":"Published Version","publisher":"IOP Publishing","supplementarymaterial":"yes","_id":"22958","title":"Cascaded optomechanical sensing for small signals","article_type":"original","tmp":{"name":"Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International Public License (CC-BY 4.0)","short":"CC BY (4.0)","image":"/images/cc_by.png","legal_code_url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/legalcode"},"date_published":"2026-08-13T00:00:00Z","OA_place":"publisher","das_tickbox":"1","oa":1,"month":"08","volume":28,"arxiv":1,"department":[{"_id":"OnHo"}],"dataavailabilitystatement":"All data that support the findings of this study are included within the article (and any supplementary files).","file":[{"file_size":799610,"checksum":"b932d9f4bac1a2f6777e41d884b7b703","access_level":"open_access","date_created":"2026-10-01T09:17:19Z","file_id":"23018","success":1,"relation":"main_file","file_name":"2026_NewJourPhysics_Marchese.pdf","content_type":"application/pdf","creator":"dernst","date_updated":"2026-10-01T09:17:19Z"}],"year":"2026","acknowledgement":"We thank Germain Tobar, Navdeep Arya, Magdalena Zych, Teodor Strömberg and Onur Hosten for useful discussions.
