It is composed of the inner and outer nuclear membranes, nuclear pore complexes (NPCs) and, in metazoa, the lamina. The NE not only regulates the trafficking of macromolecules between nucleoplasm and cytosol but also provides anchoring sites for chromatin and the cytoskeleton. Through these interactions, the NE helps position the nucleus within the cell and chromosomes within the nucleus, thereby regulating the expression of certain genes. The NE is not static, rather it is continuously remodeled during cell division. The most dramatic example of NE reorganization occurs during mitosis in metazoa when the NE undergoes a complete cycle of disassembly and reformation. Despite the importance of the NE for eukaryotic cell life, relatively little is known about its biogenesis or many of its functions. We thus are far from understanding the molecular etiology of a diverse group of NE-associated diseases."}],"doi":"10.1146/annurev.cellbio.21.090704.151152","citation":{"ista":"Hetzer M, Walther TC, Mattaj IW. 2005. The ratio of the number of requests accepted by the optimum offline algorithm to the expected number of requests accepted by our algorithm is O((log n + log log M)(log n + log M) log n), where M is the number of multicast groups and n is the number of nodes in the graph. We show that this is close to optimum by presenting an\r\nΩ(log n log M) lower bound on this ratio for any randomized online algorithm against an oblivious adversary, when M is much larger than the link capacities. Our lower bound applies even in the restricted case where the link capacities are much larger than bandwidth requested by a single multicast. We also present a simple proof showing that it is impossible to be competitive against an adaptive online adversary.\r\nAs in the previous online routing algorithms, our algorithm uses edge-costs when deciding on which is the best path to use. In contrast to the previous competitive algorithms in the throughput model, our cost is not a direct function of the edge load. The new cost definition allows us to decouple the effects of routing and admission decisions of different multicast groups.","lang":"eng"}],"article_processing_charge":"No","title":"An online throughput-competitive algorithm for multicast routing and admission control","_id":"11763","publisher":"Elsevier","date_updated":"2024-11-06T08:12:50Z"},{"article_processing_charge":"No","publication_identifier":{"eissn":["1573-1413"],"issn":["1386-145X"]},"abstract":[{"text":"Many daily activities present information in the form of a stream of text, and often people can benefit from additional information on the topic discussed. TV broadcast news can be treated as one such stream of text; in this paper we discuss finding news articles on the web that are relevant to news currently being broadcast.\r\n\r\nWe evaluated a variety of algorithms for this problem, looking at the impact of inverse document frequency, stemming, compounds, history, and query length on the relevance and coverage of news articles returned in real time during a broadcast. We also evaluated several postprocessing techniques for improving the precision, including reranking using additional terms, reranking by document similarity, and filtering on document similarity. For the best algorithm, 84–91% of the articles found were relevant, with at least 64% of the articles being on the exact topic of the broadcast. The book provides a pedagogical entry into an active area of ongoing research for both graduate students and researchers. It is an outgrowth of a course given by the authors for graduate students and post-doctoral researchers at the Oberwolfach Research Institute in 2004. Recent findings on the directional movement of the plant signalling molecule auxin provide a unique connection between individual cell polarity and the establishment of polarity at the tissue, organ, and whole-plant levels. Decisions about the subcellular polar targeting of PIN auxin transport components determine the direction of auxin flow between cells and consequently mediate multiple developmental events. In addition, mutations or chemical interference with PIN-based auxin transport result in abnormal cell divisions. Thus, the complicated links between cell polarity establishment, auxin transport, cytoskeleton, and oriented cell divisions now begin to emerge. Here we review the available literature on the issues of cell polarity in both plants and animals to extend our understanding on the generation, maintenance, and transmission of cell polarity in plants."}],"publication_status":"published","fulldoi":"https://doi.org/10.1007/s00709-005-0104-8"},{"main_file_link":[{"url":"https://doi.org/10.3189/172756505781829124","open_access":"1"}],"oa_version":"Published Version","month":"10","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"user_id":"2DF688A6-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","scopus_import":"1","article_processing_charge":"No","publication_identifier":{"issn":["0022-1430"],"eissn":["1727-5652"]},"abstract":[{"lang":"eng","text":"An enhanced temperature-index glacier melt model, incorporating incoming shortwave radiation and albedo, is presented. The model is an attempt to combine the high temporal resolution and accuracy of physically based melt models with the lower data requirements and computational simplicity of empirical melt models, represented by the ‘degree-day’ method and its variants. The model is run with both measured and modelled radiation data, to test its applicability to glaciers with differing data availability. Five automatic weather stations were established on Haut Glacier d’Arolla, Switzerland, between May and September 2001. Reference surface melt rates were calculated using a physically based energy-balance melt model. The performance of the enhanced temperature-index model was tested at each of the four validation stations by comparing predicted hourly melt rates with reference melt rates. Predictions made with three other temperature-index models were evaluated in the same way for comparison. The enhanced temperature-index model offers significant improvements over the other temperature-index models, and accounts for 90–95% of the variation in the reference melt rate. The improvement is lower, but still significant, when the model is forced by modelled shortwave radiation data, thus offering a better alternative to existing models that require only temperature data input."}],"doi":"10.3189/172756505781829124","citation":{"ista":"Pellicciotti F, Brock B, Strasser U, Burlando P, Funk M, Corripio J. 2005. Based on lectures he gave at the University of Michigan in the early 1960s, this book is concerned with the use of analytic methods in the study of integer solutions to Diophantine equations and Diophantine inequalities. It provides an excellent introduction to a timeless area of number theory that is still as widely researched today as it was when the book originally appeared. The three main themes of the book are Waring's problem and the representation of integers by diagonal forms, the solubility in integers of systems of forms in many variables, and the solubility in integers of diagonal inequalities. For the second edition of the book a comprehensive foreword has been added in which three prominent authorities describe the modern context and recent developments. A thorough bibliography has also been added."}],"doi":"10.1017/CBO9780511542893","citation":{"mla":"Davenport, Harold, and Timothy D. Thin films of dry gelatin doped with potassium hexacyanoferrate are chemically micropatterned with a solution of silver nitrate delivered from an agarose stamp. Precipitation reaction between the two salts causes the surface to deform. The mechanism of surface deformation is shown to involve a sequence of reactions, diffusion, and gel swelling/contraction. This mechanism is established experimentally and provides a basis of a theoretical lattice-gas model that allows prediction surface topographies emerging from arbitrary geometries of the stamped features. The usefulness of the technique is demonstrated by using it to rapidly prepare two types of mold for passive microfluidic mixers.","lang":"eng"}],"citation":{"ama":"Campbell CJ, Klajn R, Fialkowski M, Grzybowski BA. Surface properties of SAMs - e.g., wettability, stability in diverse environments, propensity to interact with or to resist adsorption of macromolecules -- depend on and can be controlled flexibly by the properties of the functional (head) groups in the w position of the alkyl chain. SAMs provide a basis for many important scientific and technological applications, ranging from micropatterning methods, through sensing, to biological recognition. Despite their importance, the literature on SAMs and the synthesis of molecules that constitute them remains scattered and often conflicting. The purpose of this Review is (i) to summarize the applications and physical properties of SAMs and (ii) to systematize the strategies of synthesis of ω-functionalized alkane thiols. Generic retrosynthetic scheme is developed that allows efficient synthetic planning. Issues related to the selection of appropriate protecting groups and the ways of introduction of the thiol functionality are discussed in detail, and illustrated with examples of syntheses of several complex alkane thiols.","lang":"eng"}],"publication_identifier":{"eissn":["1875-5348"],"issn":["1385-2728"]},"keyword":["Organic Chemistry"],"publisher":"Bentham Science","_id":"13433","date_updated":"2023-08-08T12:39:52Z","title":"Applications, properties and synthesis of w-functionalized n-alkanethiols and disulfides - the building blocks of self-assembled monolayers","oa_version":"None","user_id":"2DF688A6-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"month":"12","scopus_import":"1"},{"type":"journal_article","issue":"2","extern":"1","year":"2005","status":"public","intvolume":" 621","date_published":"2005-03-10T00:00:00Z","date_created":"2025-01-03T12:23:39Z","publication":"The Astrophysical Journal","fulldoi":"https://doi.org/10.1086/427722","publication_status":"published","quality_controlled":"1","article_type":"original","OA_type":"free access","volume":621,"page":"559-573","OA_place":"publisher","day":"10","author":[{"first_name":"Charles R.","full_name":"Keeton, Charles R.","last_name":"Keeton"},{"first_name":"Michael","full_name":"Kuhlen, Michael","last_name":"Kuhlen"},{"id":"7c006e8c-cc0d-11ee-8322-cb904ef76f36","last_name":"Haiman","orcid":"0000-0003-3633-5403","full_name":"Haiman, Zoltán","first_name":"Zoltán"}],"date_updated":"2025-01-07T11:22:39Z","_id":"18727","publisher":"American Astronomical Society","title":"Gravitational lensing magnification without multiple imaging","publication_identifier":{"issn":["0004-637X"],"eissn":["1538-4357"]},"abstract":[{"lang":"eng","text":"Gravitational lensing can amplify the apparent brightness of distant sources. Images that are highly magnified are often part of multiply imaged systems, but we consider the possibility of having large magnifications without additional detectable images. In rare but nonnegligible situations, lensing can produce a single highly magnified image; this phenomenon is mainly associated with massive cluster-scale halos (≳1013.5 M☉). Alternatively, lensing can produce multiply imaged systems in which the extra images are either unresolved or too faint to be detectable. This phenomenon is dominated by galaxies and lower mass halos (≲1012 M☉) and is very sensitive to the inner density profile of the halos. Although we study the general problem, we customize our calculations to four quasars at redshift z ≈ 6 in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), for which Richards et al. (2004) have ruled out the presence of extra images down to an image splitting of Δθ = 0farcs3 and a flux ratio of f = 0.01. We predict that 9%-29% of all z ≈ 6 quasars that are magnified by a factor of μ > 10 would lack detectable extra images, with 5%-10% being true singly imaged systems. We show new evidence, based on the combined statistics of Lyman α and β absorption in quasar spectra, that the IGM contains a significant amount of neutral hydrogen, and is experiencing rapid ionization at redshift z~ 6. However, we argue that quasar BHs, even faint ones that are below the detection thresholds of existing optical surveys, are unlikely to drive the evolution of the neutral fraction around this epoch, because they would over–produce the present–day soft X–ray background. On the other hand, the seeds of the z~ 6 quasar BHs likely appeared at much earlier epochs (z~ 20), and produced hard ionizing radiation by accretion. These early BHs are promising candidates to account for the high redshift (z~ 15) ionization implied by the recent cosmic microwave anisotropy data from WMAP. Using a model for the growth of BHs by accretion and mergers in a hierarchical cosmology, we suggest that the early growth of quasars must include a super-Eddington growth phase, and that, although not yet optically identified, the FIRST radio survey may have already detected several thousand >108M⊙ BHs at z>6.","lang":"eng"}],"citation":{"apa":"Haiman, Z., Dijkstra, M., & Mesinger, A. This leads to an alternative view on the underlying concepts of three-valued shape analysis by Sagiv, Reps and Wilhelm. Our construction of the abstract post operator is analogous to the corresponding construction for classical predicate abstraction, except that predicates over objects on the heap take the place of state predicates, and boolean heaps (sets of bitvectors) take the place of boolean states (bitvectors). A program is abstracted to a program over boolean heaps. For each command of the program, the corresponding abstract command is effectively constructed by deductive reasoning, namely by the application of the weakest precondition operator and an entailment test. We thus obtain a symbolic framework for shape analysis."}],"publication_identifier":{"isbn":["978-3-540-28584-7"]},"article_processing_charge":"No","scopus_import":"1","month":"01","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"user_id":"2DF688A6-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","oa_version":"None","date_published":"2005-01-01T00:00:00Z","date_created":"2018-12-11T12:08:29Z","type":"conference","intvolume":" 3672","year":"2005","status":"public","extern":"1","conference":{"start_date":"2005-09-07","end_date":"2005-09-09","name":"SAS: Static Analysis Symposium","location":"London, United Kingdom"},"publist_id":"1092","publication":"12th International Symposium on Static Analysis","publication_status":"published","fulldoi":"https://doi.org/10.1007/11547662_19","volume":3672,"quality_controlled":"1","day":"01","author":[{"last_name":"Podelski","first_name":"Andreas","full_name":"Podelski, Andreas"},{"id":"447BFB88-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","last_name":"Wies","full_name":"Wies, Thomas","first_name":"Thomas"}],"page":"268-283"},{"quality_controlled":"1","page":"98 - 109","oa_version":"None","day":"12","month":"01","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"user_id":"2DF688A6-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","author":[{"last_name":"Alur","first_name":"Rajeev","full_name":"Alur, Rajeev"},{"id":"4DCBEFFE-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","last_name":"Cerny","full_name":"Cerny, Pavol","first_name":"Pavol"},{"full_name":"Madhusudan, P.","first_name":"P.","last_name":"Madhusudan"},{"full_name":"Nam, Wonhong","first_name":"Wonhong","last_name":"Nam"}],"type":"conference","year":"2005","date_updated":"2025-07-01T12:07:02Z","status":"public","extern":"1","publisher":"ACM","_id":"4404","date_published":"2005-01-12T00:00:00Z","title":"Synthesis of interface specifications for Java classes","date_created":"2018-12-11T12:08:41Z","abstract":[{"text":"While a typical software component has a clearly specified (static) interface in terms of the methods and the input/output types they support, information about the correct sequencing of method calls the client must invoke is usually undocumented. In this paper, we propose a novel solution for automatically extracting such temporal specifications for Java classes. Given a Java class, and a safety property such as \"the exception E should not be raised\", the corresponding (dynamic) interface is the most general way of invoking the methods in the class so that the safety property is not violated. Our synthesis method first constructs a symbolic representation of the finite state-transition system obtained from the class using predicate abstraction. Constructing the interface then corresponds to solving a partial-information two-player game on this symbolic graph. We present a sound approach to solve this computationally-hard problem approximately using algorithms for learning finite automata and symbolic model checking for branching-time logics. We describe an implementation of the proposed techniques in the tool JIST--- Java Interface Synthesis Tool---and demonstrate that the tool can construct interfaces accurately and efficiently for sample Java2SDK library classes.","lang":"eng"}],"citation":{"ama":"Alur R, Cerny P, Madhusudan P, Nam W. The nematode Caenorhabditis elegans has unique features that facilitate this synthesis. Its nervous system includes exactly 302 neurons, and their pattern of synaptic connectivity is known. With only five olfactory neurons, C. elegans can dynamically respond to dozens of attractive and repellant odors. Thermosensory neurons enable the nematode to remember its cultivation temperature and to track narrow isotherms. Polymodal sensory neurons detect a wide range of nociceptive cues and signal robust escape responses. Pairing of sensory stimuli leads to long-lived changes in behavior consistent with associative learning. Two modes of propagation have been studied: synfire chains, in which synchronous activity travels through feedforward layers of a neuronal network, and the propagation of fluctuations in firing rate across these layers. In both cases, a sufficient amount of noise, which was added to previous models from an external source, had to be included to support stable propagation. Sparse, randomly connected networks of spiking model neurons can generate chaotic patterns of activity. We investigate whether this activity, which is a more realistic noise source, is sufficient to allow for signal transmission. We find that, for rate-coded signals but not for synfire chains, such networks support robust and accurate signal reproduction through up to six layers if appropriate adjustments are made in synaptic strengths. We investigate the factors affecting transmission and show that multiple signals can propagate simultaneously along different pathways. Using this feature, we show how different types of logic gates can arise within the architecture of the random network through the strengthening of specific synapses."}],"publication_identifier":{"issn":["0270-6474","1529-2401"]},"citation":{"apa":"Vogels, T. Here, we review network models of internally generated activity, focusing on three types of network dynamics: (a) sustained responses to transient stimuli, which provide a model of working memory; (b) oscillatory network activity; and (c) chaotic activity, which models complex patterns of background spiking in cortical and other circuits. We also review propagation of stimulus-driven activity through spontaneously active networks. Exploring these aspects of neural network dynamics is critical for understanding how neural circuits produce cognitive function."}],"publication_identifier":{"issn":["0147-006X","1545-4126"]},"article_processing_charge":"No","oa_version":"None","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"user_id":"D865714E-FA4E-11E9-B85B-F5C5E5697425","month":"07"}]
