abstract = {It is widely believed that information storage in neuronal circuits involves nanoscopic structural changes at synapses, resulting in the formation of synaptic engrams. However, direct evidence for this hypothesis is lacking. To test this conjecture, we combined chemical potentiation, functional analysis by paired pre-postsynaptic recordings, and structural analysis by electron microscopy (EM) and freeze-fracture replica labeling (FRL) at the murine hippocampal mossy fiber synapse, a key synapse in the trisynaptic circuit of the hippocampus. Biophysical analysis of synaptic transmission revealed that forskolin-induced chemical potentiation increased the readily releasable vesicle pool size and vesicular release probability by 146% and 49%, respectively. Structural analysis of mossy fiber synapses by EM and FRL demonstrated an increase in the number of vesicles close to the plasma membrane and the number of clusters of the priming protein Munc13-1, indicating an increase in the number of both docked and primed vesicles. Furthermore, FRL analysis revealed a significant reduction of the distance between Munc13-1 and CaV2.1 Ca2+ channels, suggesting reconfiguration of the channel-vesicle coupling nanotopography. Our results indicate that presynaptic plasticity is associated with structural reorganization of active zones. We propose that changes in potential nanoscopic organization at synaptic vesicle release sites may be correlates of learning and memory at a plastic central synapse.},

We examine both the time-averaged and time-series alkali spectral flux individually, over 4 nights at a hot Saturn system on a ∼2.8 day orbit about a Sun-like star WASP-49 A. Very Large Telescope/ESPRESSO observations are analyzed, providing new constraints. We recover the previously confirmed residual sodium flux uniquely when averaged, whereas night-to-night Na i varies by more than an order of magnitude. On HARPS/3.6 m Epoch II, we report a Doppler redshift at vΓ,NaD = + 9.7 ± 1.6 km s−1 with respect to the planet's rest frame. Upon examining the lightcurves, we confirm night-to-night variability, on the order of ∼1%–4% in NaD, rarely coinciding with exoplanet transit, not readily explained by stellar activity, starspots, tellurics, or the interstellar medium. Coincident with the ∼+10 km s−1 Doppler redshift, we detect a transient sodium absorption event dFNaD/F⋆ = 3.6% ± 1% at a relative difference of ΔFNaD(t) ∼ 4.4% ± 1%, lasting ΔtNaD ≳ 40 minutes. Since exoplanetary alkali signatures are blueshifted due to the natural vector of radiation pressure, estimated here at roughly ∼−5.7 km s−1, the radial velocity is rather at +15.4 km s−1, far larger than any known exoplanet system. Given that the redshift magnitude vΓ is in between the Roche limit and dynamically stable satellite orbits, the transient sodium may be a putative indication of a natural satellite orbiting WASP-49 A b.},

To do so, we present an algorithm to efficiently maintain a coreset, a compressed version of the dataset, that allows easy computation of a clustering solution at query time. Our coreset algorithm has near-optimal update time of Õ(k) in general metric spaces, which reduces to Õ(d) in the Euclidean space ℝ^d. The query time is O(k²) in general metrics, and O(kd) in ℝ^d. To maintain a constant-factor approximation for k-median and k-means clustering in Euclidean space, this directly leads to an algorithm with update time Õ(d), and query time Õ(kd + k²). To maintain a O(polylog k)-approximation, the query time is reduced to Õ(kd).},

abstract = {The problem of designing connectivity oracles supporting vertex failures is one of the basic data structures problems for undirected graphs. It is already well understood: previous works [Duan-Pettie STOC'10; Long-Saranurak FOCS'22] achieve query time linear in the number of failed vertices, and it is conditionally optimal as long as we require preprocessing time polynomial in the size of the graph and update time polynomial in the number of failed vertices. We revisit this problem in the paradigm of algorithms with predictions: we ask if the query time can be improved if the set of failed vertices can be predicted beforehand up to a small number of errors. More specifically, we design a data structure that, given a graph G = (V,E) and a set of vertices predicted to fail D̂ ⊆ V of size d = |D̂|, preprocesses it in time Õ(d|E|) and then can receive an update given as the symmetric difference between the predicted and the actual set of failed vertices D̂△D = (D̂ ⧵ D) ∪ (D ⧵ D̂) of size η = |D̂△D|, process it in time Õ(η⁴), and after that answer connectivity queries in G ⧵ D in time O(η). Viewed from another perspective, our data structure provides an improvement over the state of the art for the fully dynamic subgraph connectivity problem in the sensitivity setting [Henzinger-Neumann ESA'16]. We argue that the preprocessing time and query time of our data structure are conditionally optimal under standard fine-grained complexity assumptions.},

the hyperkähler structures on certain Higgs bundle moduli spaces. As a consequence, they
conjecture an equivalence between categories of BBB and BAA-branes. At the classical
level, this mirror symmetry is given by T-duality between semi-flat hyperkähler structures on
algebraic integrable systems.
In this thesis, we investigate the T-duality relation between hyperkähler structures and the
corresponding branes on affine torus bundles. We use the techniques of generalized geometry
to show that semi-flat hyperkähler structures are T-dual on algebraic integrable systems.
We also describe T-duality for generalized branes. Motivated by Fourier-Mukai transform
we upgrade the T-duality between generalized branes to T-duality of submanifolds endowed
with U(1)-bundles and connections. This T-duality in the appropriate context specializes to
T-duality between BBB and BAA-branes.

abstract = {We prove that the cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation (both focusing and defocusing) is globally well-posed in H^s(R) for any regularity s > −1/2. Well-posedness has long been known for s ≥ 0, see [55], but not previously for any s < 0. The scaling-critical value s = −1/2 is necessarily excluded here, since instantaneous norm inflation is known to occur [11, 40, 48]. We also prove (in a parallel fashion) well-posedness of the real- and complex-valued modified Korteweg–de Vries equations in H^s(R) for any s > −1/2. The best regularity achieved previously was s ≥ 1/4 (see [15, 24, 33, 39]). To overcome the failure of uniform continuity of the data-to-solution map, we employ the method of commuting flows introduced in [37]. In stark contrast with our arguments in [37], an essential ingredient in this paper is the demonstration of a local smoothing effect for both equations. Despite the nonperturbative nature of the well-posedness, the gain of derivatives matches that of the underlying linear equation. To compensate for the local nature of the smoothing estimates, we also demonstrate tightness of orbits. The proofs of both local smoothing and tightness rely on our discovery of a new one-parameter family of coercive microscopic conservation laws that remain meaningful at this low regularity. },

abstract = {Frontal ablation is responsible for a large fraction of the mass loss from tidewater glaciers. The main contributors to frontal ablation are iceberg calving and submarine melting, with calving often being the largest. However, submarine melting, in addition to its direct contribution to mass loss, also promotes calving through the changes induced in the stress field at the glacier terminus, so both processes should be jointly analysed. Among the factors influencing submarine melting, the formation of a buoyant plume due to the emergence of fresh subglacial water at the glacier grounding line plays a key role. In this study we used Elmer/Ice to develop a 3D glacier dynamics model including calving and subglacial hydrology coupled with a line plume model to calculate the calving front position at every time step. We applied this model to the Hansbreen–Hansbukta glacier–fjord system in southern Spitsbergen, Svalbard, where a large set of data are available for both the glacier and the fjord from September 2008 to March 2011. We found that our 3D model reproduced the expected seasonal cycle of advance–retreat. Besides, the modelled front positions were in good agreement with the observed front positions at the central part of the calving front, with longitudinal differences, on average, below 15 m for the period from December 2009 to March 2011. But there were regions of the front, especially the eastern margin, that presented major differences.},

We perform a spectroscopic search for broad Hα emitters at z ≈ 4–6 using deep JWST/NIRCam imaging and wide field slitless spectroscopy from the EIGER and FRESCO surveys. We identify 20 Hα lines at z = 4.2–5.5 that have broad components with line widths from ∼1200–3700 km s−1, contributing ∼30%–90% of the total line flux. We interpret these broad components as being powered by accretion onto SMBHs with implied masses ∼107–8M⊙. In the UV luminosity range MUV,AGN+host = −21 to −18, we measure number densities of ≈10−5 cMpc−3. This is an order of magnitude higher than expected from extrapolating quasar UV luminosity functions (LFs). Yet, such AGN are found in only <1% of star-forming galaxies at z ∼ 5. The number density discrepancy is much lower when compared to the broad Hα LF. The SMBH mass function agrees with large cosmological simulations. In two objects, we detect complex Hα profiles that we tentatively interpret as caused by absorption signatures from dense gas fueling SMBH growth and outflows. We may be witnessing early AGN feedback that will clear dust-free pathways through which more massive blue quasars are seen. We uncover a strong correlation between reddening and the fraction of total galaxy luminosity arising from faint AGN. This implies that early SMBH growth is highly obscured and that faint AGN are only minor contributors to cosmic reionization.},

In particular, Pa 30 exhibits a complex morphology, with a unique radial and filamentary structure, and it hosts a hot stellar remnant at its center, which displays oxygen-dominated, ultrafast winds. Because of the surviving stellar remnant and the lack of hydrogen and helium in its filaments, it has been suggested that Pa 30 is the product of a failed thermonuclear explosion in a near- or super-Chandrasekhar white dwarf, which created a subluminous transient, a rare subtype of the Ia class of supernovae called type Iax. We present here a detailed study of the 3D structure and velocities of a full radial section of the remnant. The Integral Field Unit observations, obtained with the new red channel of the Keck Cosmic Web Imager spectrograph, reveal that the ejecta are consistent with being ballistic, with velocities close to the free-expansion velocity. Additionally, we detect a large cavity inside the supernova remnant and a sharp inner edge to the filamentary structure, which coincides with the outer edge of a bright ring detected in infrared images. Finally, we detect a strong asymmetry in the amount of ejecta along the line of sight, which might hint at an asymmetric explosion. Our analysis provides strong confirmation that the explosion originated from SN 1181.},

This technology is appealing because it can provide precise and localized cooling and heating without using hazardous liquids or gases commonly found in traditional vapor compression refrigeration. These devices are compact, customizable in size, work in any orientation, operate noiselessly, and require minimal maintenance. Even though thermoelectric coolers could be transformative for many advanced thermal management applications, their widespread adoption is hindered by the low efficiency of the thermoelectric materials and costly manufacturing processes.

in some group of unknown order. PoEs
are the basis for practical constructions of Verifiable Delay Functions (VDFs), which, in turn, are important for various higher-level
protocols in distributed computing. In applications such as distributed consensus, many PoEs are generated regularly, motivating
protocols for secure aggregation of batches of statements into a
few statements to improve the efficiency for both parties. Rotem
(TCC 2021) recently presented two such generic batch PoEs.
In this work, we introduce two batch PoEs that outperform
both proposals of Rotem and we evaluate their practicality. First,
we show that the two batch PoEs of Rotem can be combined to
improve the overall efficiency by at least a factor of two. Second, we
revisit the work of Bellare, Garay, and Rabin (EUROCRYPT 1998)
on batch verification of digital signatures and show that, under the
low order assumption, their bucket test can be securely adapted to
the setting of groups of unknown order. The resulting batch PoE
quickly outperforms the state of the art in the expected number of
group multiplications with the growing number of instances, and it
decreases the cost of batching by an order of magnitude already for
hundreds of thousands of instances. Importantly, it is the first batch
PoE that significantly decreases both the proof size and complexity
of verification. Our experimental evaluations show that even a nonoptimized implementation achieves such improvements, which
would match the demands of real-life systems requiring large-scale
PoE processing.
Finally, even though our proof techniques are conceptually similar to Rotem, we give an improved analysis of the application of the
low order assumption towards secure batching of PoE instances,
resulting in a tight reduction, which is important when setting the
security parameter in practice.},

With the same goal, we present a subsumption algorithm that can determine termination earlier than the usual approach using hash sets.
