This is particularly the case when fine-tuning pre-trained models, which can have large weight, activation, and error (output gradient) outlier values that make lower-precision optimization difficult. To address this, we present HALO, a new quantization-aware training approach for Transformers that enables accurate and efficient low-precision training by combining 1) strategic placement of Hadamard rotations in both forward and backward passes, which mitigate outliers, 2) high-performance kernel support, and 3) FSDP integration for low-precision communication. Our approach ensures that all large matrix multiplications during the forward and backward passes are executed in lower precision. Applied to LLaMa models, HALO achieves near-full-precision-equivalent results during fine-tuning on various tasks, while delivering up to 1.41x end-to-end speedup for full fine-tuning on RTX 4090 GPUs. HALO efficiently supports both standard and parameter-efficient fine-tuning (PEFT). Our results demonstrate the first practical approach to fully quantized LLM fine-tuning that maintains accuracy in INT8 and FP6 precision, while delivering performance benefits."}],"researchdata_availability":"no","year":"2025","volume":38,"main_file_link":[{"url":"https://doi.org/10.48550/arXiv.2501.02625","open_access":"1"}],"external_id":{"arxiv":["2501.02625"]},"page":"131755-131780","supplementarymaterial":"no","quality_controlled":"1","date_updated":"2026-09-17T06:39:18Z","OA_place":"repository","oa_version":"Preprint","publisher":"Neural Information Processing Systems Foundation","publication":"39th Conference on Neural Information Processing Systems","fulldoi":"https://doi.org/10.52202/085713-3966","article_processing_charge":"No","arxiv":1,"alternative_title":["Advances in Neural Information Processing Systems"],"oa":1,"publication_identifier":{"eissn":["1049-5258"],"isbn":["9798331338275"]},"doi":"10.52202/085713-3966","conference":{"location":"San Diego, CA, United States","end_date":"2025-12-07","start_date":"2025-12-02","name":"NeurIPS: Neural Information Processing Systems"},"OA_type":"green","intvolume":" 38","month":"12","publication_status":"published","author":[{"full_name":"Ashkboos, Saleh","last_name":"Ashkboos","first_name":"Saleh"},{"last_name":"Nikdan","first_name":"Mahdi","id":"66374281-f394-11eb-9cf6-869147deecc0","full_name":"Nikdan, Mahdi"},{"full_name":"Tabesh, Soroush","last_name":"Tabesh","first_name":"Soroush","orcid":"0009-0003-4119-6281","id":"06000900-6068-11ef-8d61-c2472ef2e752"},{"id":"18495c31-fb57-11ef-ba0d-c290e10e394e","last_name":"Lopez Castro","first_name":"Roberto","full_name":"Lopez Castro, Roberto"},{"first_name":"Torsten","last_name":"Hoefler","full_name":"Hoefler, Torsten"},{"full_name":"Alistarh, Dan-Adrian","orcid":"0000-0003-3650-940X","first_name":"Dan-Adrian","last_name":"Alistarh","id":"4A899BFC-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87"}],"language":[{"iso":"eng"}]},{"volume":38,"external_id":{"arxiv":["2502.06343"]},"page":"82200-82229","main_file_link":[{"open_access":"1","url":"https://doi.org/10.48550/arXiv.2502.06343"}],"year":"2025","publication":"39th Conference on Neural Information Processing Systems","publisher":"Neural Information Processing Systems Foundation","OA_place":"repository","date_updated":"2026-09-17T06:56:40Z","quality_controlled":"1","dataavailabilitystatement":"We share all the code implementation in the supplementary material.\r\nOur new experimental ecology dataset preview is anonymously shared on Figshare at\r\nhttps://figshare.com/s/9a490b6f6eeebd73350b. Multiple factors, including stochasticities in the training process, model\r\narchitectures, and additional inductive biases, may induce different representations,\r\neven when learning the same task on the same data. However, it has recently been\r\nshown that when a latent structure is shared between distinct latent spaces, relative\r\ndistances between representations can be preserved, up to distortions. Building\r\non this idea, we demonstrate that exploiting the differential-geometric structure of\r\nlatent spaces of neural models, it is possible to capture precisely the transformations\r\nbetween representational spaces trained on similar data distributions. Specifically,\r\nwe assume that distinct neural models parametrize approximately the same underlying manifold, and introduce a representation based on the pullback metric\r\nthat captures the intrinsic structure of the latent space, while scaling efficiently\r\nto large models. We validate experimentally our method on model stitching and\r\nretrieval tasks, covering autoencoders and vision foundation discriminative models,\r\nacross diverse architectures, datasets, pretraining schemes and modalities. The Karl Landsteiner University of Health Sciences has established a Commission on Ethics and Scientific Integrity to evaluate medical research conducted by its faculty and students and at its affiliated hospitals.\r\nAll projects submitted to the Commission on Ethics and Scientific Integrity between 2018 and 2023 were analyzed regarding their major characteristics, the duration of the evaluation process, and votes issued.\r\nA total of 520 applications were electronically submitted during the observation period. Most of the studies were retrospective data analyses in the field of oncology, psychology and surgery. Most studies included less than 100 volunteers. Of the applications 50% received a final vote within 5 months, during which several revision rounds took place. Overall, about 77% of votes issued during the observation period were positive and 2% were rejections. In 11% files were closed due to withdrawal. In 11% final votes were pending at the end of the observation period due to requests for revisions.\r\nOur results emphasize the importance of institutional ethics committees using the example of the Commission on Ethics and Scientific Integrity at the Karl Landsteiner University. Such committees fill a gap in evaluating research not covered by Austrian legal regulations. Continuous development of standards, operating procedures, and national and international collaborations are required to assess and minimize risks to trial subjects and to provide a safe and productive environment for research in human medicine and related fields."}],"acknowledgement":"Open access funding provided by Karl Landsteiner University.","has_accepted_license":"1","file_date_updated":"2025-12-30T06:54:03Z","date_published":"2025-07-01T00:00:00Z","department":[{"_id":"PreCl"}],"status":"public"},{"file":[{"date_created":"2025-08-05T11:24:25Z","content_type":"application/pdf","creator":"dernst","relation":"main_file","access_level":"open_access","file_name":"2025_AnnalesHenriPoincare_Fialova.pdf","file_size":728124,"success":1,"file_id":"20124","checksum":"d8d2d6dbce293c9ee6eaa9262e597147","date_updated":"2025-08-05T11:24:25Z"}],"external_id":{"arxiv":["2304.13373"],"isi":["001304370000001"]},"page":"2859-2900","volume":26,"year":"2025","tmp":{"name":"Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International Public License (CC-BY 4.0)","legal_code_url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/legalcode","short":"CC BY (4.0)","image":"/images/cc_by.png"},"publisher":"Springer Nature","publication":"Annales Henri Poincare","supplementarymaterial":"yes","oa_version":"Published Version","OA_place":"publisher","quality_controlled":"1","date_updated":"2026-09-17T11:06:35Z","doi":"10.1007/s00023-024-01482-7","arxiv":1,"article_processing_charge":"Yes (via OA deal)","fulldoi":"https://doi.org/10.1007/s00023-024-01482-7","corr_author":"1","publication_identifier":{"issn":["1424-0637"]},"oa":1,"PlanS_conform":"1","author":[{"first_name":"Marie","last_name":"Fialova","id":"e9c9844d-9e21-11ec-b482-f96fc09f7c4d","full_name":"Fialova, Marie"}],"language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"ec_funded":1,"project":[{"name":"IST-BRIDGE: International postdoctoral program","grant_number":"101034413","_id":"fc2ed2f7-9c52-11eb-aca3-c01059dda49c","call_identifier":"H2020"}],"article_type":"original","publication_status":"published","month":"08","intvolume":" 26","ddc":["510"],"OA_type":"hybrid","citation":{"ieee":"M. Despite their recognized importance in neural function, there is limited information on their potential involvement in neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer's disease (AD). Here, we aimed to explore the impact of AD pathology on the density and nanoscale compartmentalization of CaV2.1 channels in the hippocampus in association with GABAB receptors. Histoblotting experiments showed that the density of CaV2.1 channel was significantly reduced in the hippocampus of APP/PS1 mice in a laminar-dependent manner. CaV2.1 channel was enriched in the active zone of the axon terminals and was present at a very low density over the surface of dendritic tree of the CA1 pyramidal cells, as shown by quantitative SDS-digested freeze-fracture replica labelling (SDS-FRL). In APP/PS1 mice, the density of CaV2.1 channel in the active zone was significantly reduced in the strata radiatum and lacunosum-moleculare, while it remained unaltered in the stratum oriens. The decline in Cav2.1 channel density was found to be associated with a corresponding impairment in the GABAergic synaptic function, as evidenced by electrophysiological experiments carried out in the hippocampus of APP/PS1 mice. Remarkably, double SDS-FRL showed a co-clustering of CaV2.1 channel and GABAB1 receptor in nanodomains (~40–50 nm) in wild type mice, while in APP/PS1 mice this nanoarchitecture was absent. Together, these findings suggest that the AD pathology-induced reduction in CaV2.1 channel density and CaV2.1-GABAB1 de-clustering may play a role in the synaptic transmission alterations shown in the AD hippocampus. Therefore, uncovering these layer-dependent changes in P/Q calcium currents associated with AD pathology can benefit the development of future strategies for AD management."}],"DOAJ_listed":"1","file_date_updated":"2025-04-16T09:56:08Z","has_accepted_license":"1","acknowledgement":"Funding sources were Spanish Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad, Junta de Comunidades de Castilla-La Mancha (Spain), Life Science Innovation Center at University of Fukui and German Research Foundation.\r\nGrants RTI2018-095812-B-I00 and PID2021-125875OB-I00 funded by MCIN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033 and by “ERDF A way of making Europe” to Rafael Luján. automated decision-making, it is desirable that outputs of decision-makers be robust to slight perturbations in their inputs, a property that may be called input-output robustness. Input-output robustness appears in various different forms in the literature, such as robustness of AI models to adversarial or semantic perturbations and individual fairness of AI models that make decisions about humans. We propose runtime monitoring of input-output robustness of deployed, black-box AI models, where the goal is to design monitors that would observe one long execution sequence of the model, and would raise an alarm whenever it is detected that two similar inputs from the past led to dissimilar outputs. This way, monitoring will complement existing offline ''robustification'' approaches to increase the trustworthiness of AI decision-makers. We show that the monitoring problem can be cast as the fixed-radius nearest neighbor (FRNN) search problem, which, despite being well-studied, lacks suitable online solutions. We present our tool Clemont, which offers a number of lightweight monitors, some of which use upgraded online variants of existing FRNN algorithms, and one uses a novel algorithm based on binary decision diagrams--a data-structure commonly used in software and hardware verification. We have also developed an efficient parallelization technique that can substantially cut down the computation time of monitors for which the distance between input-output pairs is measured using the L∞norm. Using standard benchmarks from the literature of adversarial and semantic robustness and individual fairness, we perform a comparative study of different monitors in Clemont, and demonstrate their effectiveness in correctly detecting robustness violations at runtime.","lang":"eng"}],"_id":"20292","acknowledgement":"This work was supported in part by the ERC project ERC-2020-AdG 101020093 and the SBI Foundation Hub for Data Science &Analytics, IIT Bombay.","file_date_updated":"2025-09-08T08:46:31Z","has_accepted_license":"1","date_published":"2025-08-03T00:00:00Z","department":[{"_id":"ToHe"}],"status":"public","user_id":"2DF688A6-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","title":"Monitoring robustness and individual fairness","day":"03","scopus_import":"1","date_created":"2025-09-07T22:01:33Z","citation":{"ieee":"A. However, real-world AI systems operate sequentially, with outcomes and environments evolving over time. This paper proposes a framework for analysing fairness as a runtime property. Using a minimal yet expressive model based on sequences of coin tosses with possibly evolving biases, we study the problems of monitoring and enforcing fairness expressed in either toss outcomes or coin biases. Since there is no one-size-fits-all solution for either problem, we provide a summary of monitoring and enforcement strategies, parametrised by environment dynamics, prediction horizon, and confidence thresholds. For both problems, we present general results under simple or minimal assumptions. We survey existing solutions for the monitoring problem for Markovian and additive dynamics, and existing solutions for the enforcement problem in static settings with known dynamics.","lang":"eng"}],"_id":"21090","status":"public","date_published":"2025-09-13T00:00:00Z","department":[{"_id":"ToHe"}]},{"year":"2025","file":[{"date_created":"2025-05-05T07:27:54Z","relation":"main_file","creator":"dernst","content_type":"application/pdf","access_level":"open_access","file_name":"2025_PNAS_Bombari.pdf","file_size":2328320,"success":1,"checksum":"1ac6f78e368d35a0cafb4d2d9bd63443","file_id":"19648","date_updated":"2025-05-05T07:27:54Z"}],"volume":122,"external_id":{"isi":["001471214000001"],"pmid":["40215275"],"arxiv":["2410.14787"]},"date_updated":"2026-09-21T13:07:01Z","quality_controlled":"1","OA_place":"publisher","oa_version":"Published Version","tmp":{"name":"Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International Public License (CC-BY 4.0)","legal_code_url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/legalcode","short":"CC BY (4.0)","image":"/images/cc_by.png"},"related_material":{"record":[{"id":"22857","relation":"dissertation_contains","status":"public"}]},"publisher":"National Academy of Sciences","publication":"Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences","fulldoi":"https://doi.org/10.1073/pnas.2423072122","corr_author":"1","arxiv":1,"article_processing_charge":"Yes (in subscription journal)","pmid":1,"oa":1,"publication_identifier":{"eissn":["1091-6490"],"issn":["0027-8424"]},"doi":"10.1073/pnas.2423072122","OA_type":"hybrid","APC_amount":"2754,32 EUR","ddc":["000"],"month":"04","intvolume":" 122","publication_status":"published","article_type":"original","author":[{"id":"ca726dda-de17-11ea-bc14-f9da834f63aa","last_name":"Bombari","first_name":"Simone","full_name":"Bombari, Simone"},{"full_name":"Mondelli, Marco","id":"27EB676C-8706-11E9-9510-7717E6697425","last_name":"Mondelli","first_name":"Marco","orcid":"0000-0002-3242-7020"}],"project":[{"name":"Prix Lopez-Loretta 2019 - Marco Mondelli","_id":"059876FA-7A3F-11EA-A408-12923DDC885E"},{"_id":"92099302-16d5-11f0-9cad-f9a785f54fbd","name":"Trustworthy Deep Learning Theory: Private Over-Parameterized Models and Robust LLMs"},{"_id":"74caaef7-b034-11f1-8f2d-e0e993bb422e","grant_number":"COE12","name":"Bilateral Artificial Intelligence (Mondelli)"}],"language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"type":"journal_article","citation":{"chicago":"Bombari, Simone, and Marco Mondelli. “Privacy for Free in the Overparameterized Regime.” Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. In the last decade, the problem of understanding its performance cost with respect to standard GD has received remarkable attention from the research community, which formally derived upper bounds on the excess population risk RP in different learning settings. However, existing bounds typically degrade with over-parameterization, i.e., as the number of parameters p gets larger than the number of training samples n -- a regime which is ubiquitous in current deep-learning practice. As a result, the lack of theoretical insights leaves practitioners without clear guidance, leading some to reduce the effective number of trainable parameters to improve performance, while others use larger models to achieve better results through scale. In this work, we show that in the popular random features model with quadratic loss, for any sufficiently large p , privacy can be obtained for free, i.e., |RP|=o(1) , not only when the privacy parameter ε has constant order, but also in the strongly private setting ε=o(1) . This challenges the common wisdom that over-parameterization inherently hinders performance in private learning."}],"_id":"19627"},{"language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"project":[{"grant_number":"101161364","name":"Inference in High Dimensions: Light-speed Algorithms and Information Limits","_id":"911e6d1f-16d5-11f0-9cad-c5c68c6a1cdf"},{"_id":"92099302-16d5-11f0-9cad-f9a785f54fbd","name":"Trustworthy Deep Learning Theory: Private Over-Parameterized Models and Robust LLMs"}],"author":[{"first_name":"Simone","last_name":"Bombari","id":"ca726dda-de17-11ea-bc14-f9da834f63aa","full_name":"Bombari, Simone"},{"full_name":"Mondelli, Marco","orcid":"0000-0002-3242-7020","last_name":"Mondelli","first_name":"Marco","id":"27EB676C-8706-11E9-9510-7717E6697425"}],"publication_status":"published","month":"07","ddc":["000"],"intvolume":" 267","OA_type":"gold","conference":{"location":"Vancouver, Canada","end_date":"2025-07-19","start_date":"2025-07-13","name":"ICML: International Conference on Machine Learning"},"oa":1,"publication_identifier":{"eissn":["2640-3498"]},"alternative_title":["PMLR"],"article_processing_charge":"No","arxiv":1,"corr_author":"1","related_material":{"record":[{"id":"22857","relation":"dissertation_contains","status":"public"}]},"publisher":"ML Research Press","publication":"Proceedings of the 42nd International Conference on Machine Learning","tmp":{"name":"Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International Public License (CC-BY 4.0)","legal_code_url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/legalcode","short":"CC BY (4.0)","image":"/images/cc_by.png"},"oa_version":"Published Version","OA_place":"publisher","date_updated":"2026-09-21T13:07:01Z","quality_controlled":"1","page":"4839-4873","volume":267,"external_id":{"arxiv":["2502.01347"]},"file":[{"date_updated":"2026-02-19T08:04:38Z","file_size":887526,"success":1,"checksum":"d4ba4f7717b362ca38878f45e57bd643","file_id":"21335","relation":"main_file","creator":"dernst","content_type":"application/pdf","access_level":"open_access","file_name":"2025_ICML_Bombari.pdf","date_created":"2026-02-19T08:04:38Z"}],"year":"2025","_id":"21324","abstract":[{"text":"Learning models have been shown to rely on spurious correlations between non-predictive features and the associated labels in the training data, with negative implications on robustness, bias and fairness. In this work, we provide a statistical characterization of this phenomenon for high-dimensional regression, when the data contains a predictive core feature x and a spurious feature y. Specifically, we quantify the amount of spurious correlations C learned via linear regression, in terms of the data covariance and the strength λ of the ridge regularization. As a consequence, we first capture the simplicity of y through the spectrum of its covariance, and its correlation with x through the Schur complement of the full data covariance. Next, we prove a trade-off between C and the in-distribution test loss L, by showing that the value of λ that minimizes L lies in an interval where C is increasing. Finally, we investigate the effects of over-parameterization via the random features model, by showing its equivalence to regularized linear regression. We demonstrate that HTT organizes F-actin into bundles. Cryo–electron tomography (cryo-ET) and subtomogram averaging (STA) structural analyses reveal that HTT’s N-terminal HEAT and Bridge domains wrap around F-actin, while the C-terminal HEAT domain is displaced; furthermore, HTT dimerizes via the N-HEAT domain to bridge parallel actin filaments separated by ~20 nanometers. X (or Z) chromosomes are often hemizygous in males (or females), as Y (or W) chromosomes often degenerate. Such hemizygous regions can be under greater efficacy of selection, as recessive mutations are immediately exposed to selection in the heterogametic sex leading to faster adaptation and faster divergence on the X chromosome (the so-called Faster-X or Faster-Z effect). However, in young nonrecombining regions, Y/W chromosomes often have many functional genes, and many X/Z-linked loci are therefore diploid. The sheltering of recessive mutations on the X/Z by the Y/W homolog is expected to drive slower adaptation for diploid X/Z loci, i.e. a reduction in the efficacy of selection. While the Faster-X effect has been studied extensively, much less is known empirically about the evolutionary dynamics of diploid X or Z chromosomes. Here, we took advantage of published population genomic data in the female-heterogametic human parasite Schistosoma japonicum to characterize the gene content and diversity levels of the diploid and hemizygous regions of the Z chromosome. We used different metrics of selective pressures acting on genes to test for differences in the efficacy of selection in hemizygous and diploid Z regions, relative to autosomes. We found consistent patterns suggesting reduced Ne, and reduced efficacy of purifying selection, on both hemizygous and diploid Z regions. Moreover, relaxed selection was particularly pronounced for female-biased genes on the diploid Z, as predicted by recent theoretical work."}],"acknowledgement":"The authors would like to thank three anonymous reviewers for comments and suggestions. We identified an intriguing feature at the very low-mass end of the main sequence, around ∼ 0.08,M_⋅, at magnitudes F322W2 ∼ 24 and m_ F150W2 ∼ 25. This feature, dubbed 'kink', is characterized by a prominent discontinuity in the slope of the main sequence. A similar discontinuity is seen in theoretical isochrones with oxygen-poor chemistries, related to the rapid onset of absorption. We therefore hypothesize that the cluster hosts disproportionately more oxygen-poor stars near the bottom of the main sequence compared to the upper main sequence and the red giant branch. Our results show no strong or conclusive evidence of a rise in the brown dwarf luminosity function at faint magnitudes, in contrast to previous findings likely affected by faint red background galaxies. In our analysis, we accounted for this contamination by using proper motion membership.","lang":"eng"}],"article_number":"A68","status":"public","date_published":"2025-02-04T00:00:00Z","department":[{"_id":"IlCa"}],"quality_controlled":"1","OA_place":"publisher","date_updated":"2026-09-24T13:45:58Z","oa_version":"Published Version","tmp":{"name":"Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International Public License (CC-BY 4.0)","legal_code_url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/legalcode","short":"CC BY (4.0)","image":"/images/cc_by.png"},"publisher":"EDP Sciences","publication":"Astronomy & Astrophysics","year":"2025","volume":694,"file":[{"relation":"main_file","content_type":"application/pdf","creator":"dernst","access_level":"open_access","file_name":"2025_AstronomyAstrophysics_Scalco.pdf","date_created":"2025-04-16T07:13:31Z","date_updated":"2025-04-16T07:13:31Z","file_size":18080704,"success":1,"checksum":"db765ce222df60a1e7c19da1968906a8","file_id":"19569"}],"external_id":{"isi":["001414753300007"],"arxiv":["2501.04446"]},"OA_type":"diamond","publication_status":"published","intvolume":" 694","ddc":["520"],"article_type":"original","month":"02","author":[{"full_name":"Scalco, M.","first_name":"M.","last_name":"Scalco"},{"full_name":"Gerasimov, R.","last_name":"Gerasimov","first_name":"R."},{"full_name":"Bedin, L. Here, we highlight some of the major sources of complexity that arise when relating molecular mechanisms to their evolutionary consequences and ask whether accounting for every mechanistic detail is important to accurately predict evolutionary outcomes. To do this, we developed a mechanistic model of a bacterial promoter regulated by 2 proteins, allowing us to connect any promoter genotype to 6 phenotypes that capture the dynamics of gene expression following an environmental switch. Accounting for the mechanisms that govern how this system works enabled us to provide an in-depth picture of how regulated bacterial promoters might evolve. More importantly, we used the model to explore which factors that contribute to the complexity of this system are essential for understanding its evolution, and which can be simplified without information loss. We found that several key evolutionary properties—the distribution of phenotypic and fitness effects of mutations, the evolutionary trajectories during selection for regulation—can be accurately captured without accounting for all, or even most, parameters of the system. Our findings point to the need for a mechanistic approach to studying evolution, as it enables tackling biological complexity and in doing so improves the ability to predict evolutionary outcomes."}],"researchdata_availability":"upon request","has_accepted_license":"1","file_date_updated":"2025-04-16T09:41:04Z","acknowledgement":"The authors thank Nick Barton, Stepan Denisov, Claudia Igler, Srdjan Sarikas, Anna Staron, and the anonymous reviewers for useful comments and discussions that helped improve our work.\r\nFunding for this work was provided by the Wellcome Trust–Royal Society Sir Henry Dale Fellowship (216779/Z/19/Z) and the Royal Society Research Grant (RG\\R2\\232522) to M.L.","department":[{"_id":"CaGu"},{"_id":"GaTk"}],"date_published":"2025-02-01T00:00:00Z","status":"public","article_number":"iyae191","day":"01","title":"Linking molecular mechanisms to their evolutionary consequences: a primer","user_id":"317138e5-6ab7-11ef-aa6d-ffef3953e345","isi":1,"scopus_import":"1","issue":"2","citation":{"short":"R. It is known that moist convection increases roughly in equilibrium with radiative cooling, an assumption often made in simplified models of the tropical atmosphere. In this study, we use an idealised two-dimensional model of the atmosphere introduced by Vallis et. al. and incorporate a bulk-cooling term, which is an idealisation of radiative cooling in the atmosphere. We comment briefly on the static stability of the system to dry and moist convection and characteris its moist convective response to changes in the bulk cooling. We find that, while the clear-sky regions of the model respond directly to the change in the cooling term, the regions dominated by moist convective plumes are insensitive to changes in cooling. Similar to previous findings from cloud-resolving models, we too find in our idealised setting that the majority of the increase in convection occurs via an increase in the areal coverage of convection, rather than its intensity. We argue that these small-scale convective processes are an upper bound on how quickly convective intensity can change to stay in equilibrium with radiative cooling."}],"article_number":"e4902","status":"public","date_published":"2025-01-01T00:00:00Z","department":[{"_id":"CaMu"}],"supplementarymaterial":"yes","dataavailabilitystatement":"The data that support the findings of this study are available from the corresponding author, Lokahith Agasthya, upon reasonable request.","oa_version":"Published Version","OA_place":"publisher","quality_controlled":"1","date_updated":"2026-10-01T09:23:20Z","tmp":{"name":"Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International Public License (CC-BY 4.0)","legal_code_url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/legalcode","short":"CC BY (4.0)","image":"/images/cc_by.png"},"publisher":"Wiley","publication":"Quarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society","year":"2025","volume":151,"file":[{"date_created":"2025-07-03T06:46:27Z","file_name":"2025_QuartJRMS_Agasthya.pdf","relation":"main_file","creator":"dernst","content_type":"application/pdf","access_level":"open_access","success":1,"file_id":"19958","checksum":"2b4968f1c794da56d1eb7b856a406de7","file_size":5924105,"date_updated":"2025-07-03T06:46:27Z"}],"external_id":{"isi":["001363135200001"]},"intvolume":" 151","month":"01","publication_status":"published","article_type":"original","ddc":["550"],"OA_type":"hybrid","acknowledged_ssus":[{"_id":"ScienComp"}],"author":[{"full_name":"Agasthya, Lokahith N","id":"cd100965-0804-11ed-9c55-f4878ff4e877","last_name":"Agasthya","first_name":"Lokahith N"},{"id":"f978ccb0-3f7f-11eb-b193-b0e2bd13182b","orcid":"0000-0001-5836-5350","first_name":"Caroline J","last_name":"Muller","full_name":"Muller, Caroline J"},{"id":"c2cdb722-b15c-11ef-9e63-db902a30b40d","first_name":"Mathis","last_name":"Cheve","full_name":"Cheve, Mathis"}],"language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"ec_funded":1,"project":[{"grant_number":"101034413","name":"IST-BRIDGE: International postdoctoral program","call_identifier":"H2020","_id":"fc2ed2f7-9c52-11eb-aca3-c01059dda49c"},{"_id":"629205d8-2b32-11ec-9570-e1356ff73576","call_identifier":"H2020","name":"Organization of CLoUdS, and implications of Tropical cyclones and for the Energetics of the tropics, in current and waRming climate","grant_number":"805041"}],"article_processing_charge":"Yes (via OA deal)","corr_author":"1","fulldoi":"https://doi.org/10.1002/qj.4902","publication_identifier":{"eissn":["1477-870X"],"issn":["0035-9009"]},"oa":1,"doi":"10.1002/qj.4902"},{"researchdata_availability":"not applicable","_id":"12662","abstract":[{"lang":"eng","text":"Modern machine learning tasks often require considering not just one but multiple objectives. For example, besides the prediction quality, this could be the efficiency, robustness or fairness of the learned models, or any of their combinations. Multi-objective learning offers a natural framework for handling such problems without having to commit to early trade-offs. Surprisingly, statistical learning theory so far offers almost no insight into the generalization properties of multi-objective learning. In this work, we make first steps to fill this gap: We establish foundational generalization bounds for the multi-objective setting as well as generalization and excess bounds for learning with scalarizations. We also provide the first theoretical analysis of the relation between the Pareto-optimal sets of the true objectives and the Pareto-optimal sets of their empirical approximations from training data. In particular, we show a surprising asymmetry: All Pareto-optimal solutions can be approximated by empirically Pareto-optimal ones, but not vice versa."}],"acknowledgement":"Open access funding provided by Institute of Science and Technology (IST Austria).","file_date_updated":"2025-12-30T06:39:11Z","has_accepted_license":"1","date_published":"2025-10-01T00:00:00Z","department":[{"_id":"ChLa"}],"status":"public","user_id":"317138e5-6ab7-11ef-aa6d-ffef3953e345","title":"Generalization in multi-objective machine learning","day":"01","scopus_import":"1","date_created":"2023-02-20T08:23:06Z","citation":{"mla":"Súkeník, Peter, and Christoph Lampert. “Generalization in Multi-Objective Machine Learning.” Neural Computing and Applications, vol. 37, Springer Nature, 2025, pp. 24669–24683, doi:10.1007/s00521-024-10616-1.","apa":"Súkeník, P., & Lampert, C. Analogies between biological systems and inert materials such as foams, gels, and liquid crystals have provided striking insights into the core design principles underlying multicellular organization. However, these connections can seem surprising given that a key feature of multicellular systems is their ability to constantly consume energy, providing an active origin for the forces that they produce. Key emerging questions are, therefore, to understand whether and how this activity grants tissues novel properties that do not have counterparts in classical materials, as well as their consequences for biological function. Here, we review recent discoveries at the intersection of active matter and tissue biology, with an emphasis on how modeling and experiments can be combined to understand the dynamics of multicellular systems. These approaches suggest that a number of key biological tissue-scale phenomena, such as morphogenetic shape changes, collective migration, or fate decisions, share unifying design principles that can be described by physical models of tissue active matter.","lang":"eng"}],"acknowledgement":"We thank Fridtjof Brauns, Anna Kicheva, and Carl-Philipp Heisenberg for a critical reading of the manuscript and Claudia Flandoli for the artwork in the figures.
