The destruction and subsequent regrowth of young vegetation can modify the ecosystem evapotranspiration and downstream water availability. However, the response of forest recovery on hydrology is not well known with even the sign of evapotranspiration and water yield changes following forest fires being uncertain across the globe. Here, we quantify the effects of forest regrowth after catastrophic wildfires on evapotranspiration and runoff in the world's tallest angiosperm forest (Eucalyptus regnans) in Australia. We combine eddy covariance measurements including pre- and post-fire periods, mechanistic ecohydrological modeling and then extend the analysis spatially to multiple fires in eucalypt-dominated forests in south-eastern Australia by utilizing remote sensing. We find a fast recovery of evapotranspiration which reaches and exceeds pre-fire values within 2 years after the bushfire, a result confirmed by eddy covariance data, remote sensing, and modeling. Such a fast evapotranspiration recovery is likely generalizable to tall eucalypt forests in south-eastern Australia as shown by remote sensing. Once climate variability is discounted, ecohydrological modeling shows evapotranspiration rates from the recovering forest which reach peak values of +20% evapotranspiration 3 years post-fire. As a result, modeled runoff decreases substantially. Contrary to previous research, we find that the increase in modeled evapotranspiration is largely caused by the aerodynamic effects of a much shorter forest height leading to higher surface temperature, higher humidity gradients and therefore increased transpiration. However, increases in evapotranspiration as well as decreases in runoff caused by the young forest are constrained by energy and water limitations. Our result of an increase in evapotranspiration due to aerodynamic warming in a shorter forest after wildfires could occur in many parts of the world experiencing forest disturbances."}],"tmp":{"name":"Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International Public License (CC-BY 4.0)","image":"/images/cc_by.png","legal_code_url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/legalcode","short":"CC BY (4.0)"},"oa":1,"author":[{"full_name":"Meili, Naika","first_name":"Naika","last_name":"Meili"},{"last_name":"Beringer","first_name":"Jason","full_name":"Beringer, Jason"},{"first_name":"Jiacheng","full_name":"Zhao, Jiacheng","last_name":"Zhao"},{"full_name":"Fatichi, Simone","first_name":"Simone","id":"cf8e546b-a9b0-11f0-a43b-aa89ed1b56d6","last_name":"Fatichi"}],"intvolume":" 30","pmid":1,"scopus_import":"1","quality_controlled":"1","OA_type":"hybrid","status":"public","volume":30,"year":"2024","publication":"Global Change Biology","das_tickbox":"1","date_updated":"2026-08-11T05:51:07Z","date_created":"2026-07-27T12:30:24Z","date_published":"2024-01-01T00:00:00Z","OA_place":"publisher","month":"01"},{"date_updated":"2026-08-12T08:44:53Z","das_tickbox":"1","date_created":"2026-07-27T12:30:24Z","date_published":"2024-01-01T00:00:00Z","OA_place":"publisher","month":"01","publisher":"Wiley","abstract":[{"lang":"eng","text":"The ascent of water from the soil to the leaves of vascular plants, described by the study of plant hydraulics, regulates ecosystem responses to environmental forcing and recovery from stress periods. Several approaches to model plant hydraulics have been proposed. In this study, we introduce four different versions of plant hydraulics representations in the terrestrial biosphere model T&C to understand the significance of plant hydraulics to ecosystem functioning. We tested representations of plant hydraulics, investigating plant water capacitance, and long-term xylem damages following drought. The four models we tested were a combination of representations including or neglecting capacitance and including or neglecting xylem damage legacies. Using the models at six case studies spanning semiarid to tropical ecosystems, we quantify how plant xylem flow, plant water storage and long-term xylem damage can modulate overall water and carbon dynamics across multiple time scales. We show that as drought develops, models with plant hydraulics predict a slower onset of plant water stress, and a diurnal variability of water and carbon fluxes closer to observations. Plant water storage was found to be particularly important for the diurnal dynamics of water and carbon fluxes, with models that include plant water capacitance yielding better results. Models including permanent damage to conducting plant tissues show an additional significant drought legacy effect, limiting plant productivity during the recovery phase following major droughts. However, when considering ecosystem responses to the observed climate variability, plant hydraulic modules alone cannot significantly improve the overall model performance, even though they reproduce more realistic water and carbon dynamics. This opens new avenues for model development, explicitly linking plant hydraulics with additional ecosystem processes, such as plant phenology and improved carbon allocation algorithms."}],"tmp":{"name":"Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International Public License (CC-BY 4.0)","image":"/images/cc_by.png","legal_code_url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/legalcode","short":"CC BY (4.0)"},"author":[{"full_name":"Paschalis, Athanasios","first_name":"Athanasios","last_name":"Paschalis"},{"last_name":"De Kauwe","full_name":"De Kauwe, Martin G.","first_name":"Martin G."},{"last_name":"Sabot","first_name":"Manon","full_name":"Sabot, Manon"},{"last_name":"Fatichi","full_name":"Fatichi, Simone","id":"cf8e546b-a9b0-11f0-a43b-aa89ed1b56d6","first_name":"Simone"}],"oa":1,"intvolume":" 30","OA_type":"hybrid","quality_controlled":"1","status":"public","scopus_import":"1","pmid":1,"publication":"Global Change Biology","volume":30,"year":"2024","citation":{"chicago":"Paschalis, Athanasios, Martin G. Multimodel evaluations can lead to model improvements; however, there have been no major intercomparisons of urban-focussed land surface models in over a decade. Here, in Phase 1 of the Urban-PLUMBER project, we evaluate the ability of 30 land surface models to simulate surface energy fluxes critical to atmospheric meteorological and air quality simulations. We establish minimum and upper performance expectations for participating models using simple information-limited models as benchmarks. Compared with the last major model intercomparison at the same site, we find broad improvement in the current cohort's predictions of short-wave radiation, sensible and latent heat fluxes, but little or no improvement in long-wave radiation and momentum fluxes. Models with a simple urban representation (e.g., ‘slab’ schemes) generally perform well, particularly when combined with sophisticated hydrological/vegetation models. Some mid-complexity models (e.g., ‘canyon’ schemes) also perform well, indicating efforts to integrate vegetation and hydrology processes have paid dividends. The most complex models that resolve three-dimensional interactions between buildings in general did not perform as well as other categories. However, these models also tended to have the simplest representations of hydrology and vegetation. Models without any urban representation (i.e., vegetation-only land surface models) performed poorly for latent heat fluxes, and reasonably for other energy fluxes at this suburban site. Our analysis identified widespread human errors in initial submissions that substantially affected model performances. Although significant efforts are applied to correct these errors, we conclude that human factors are likely to influence results in this (or any) model intercomparison, particularly where participating scientists have varying experience and first languages. These initial results are for one suburban site, and future phases of Urban-PLUMBER will evaluate models across 20 sites in different urban and regional climate zones.","lang":"eng"}],"tmp":{"name":"Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International Public License (CC-BY 4.0)","image":"/images/cc_by.png","legal_code_url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/legalcode","short":"CC BY (4.0)"},"user_id":"ba8df636-2132-11f1-aed0-ed93e2281fdd","title":"Evaluation of 30 urban land surface models in the Urban-PLUMBER project: Phase 1 results","publication_status":"published","publication_identifier":{"eissn":["1477-870X"],"issn":["0035-9009"]},"main_file_link":[{"open_access":"1","url":"https://doi.org/10.1002/qj.4589"}],"extern":"1","citation":{"ieee":"M. This makes them vulnerable to manipulations such as indirect prompt injections and generally unsuitable for safety-critical tasks. Surprisingly, there is currently no established definition or benchmark to quantify this phenomenon. In this work, we close this gap by introducing a formal measure for instruction-data separation and an empirical variant that is calculable from a model's outputs. We also present a new dataset, SEP, that allows estimating the measure for real-world models. Our results on various LLMs show that the problem of instruction-data separation is real: all models fail to achieve high separation, and canonical mitigation techniques, such as prompt engineering and fine-tuning, either fail to substantially improve separation or reduce model utility. For spin relaxation, this can easily be understood from the sampling frequencies of the spectral-density function by different relaxation-rate constants. In addition to data from relaxation measurements, determining dynamically averaged anisotropic interactions in magic-angle spinning (MAS) solid-state NMR allows for better quantification of the amplitude of molecular motion. For partially averaged anisotropic interactions, the relevant timescales of motion are not so clearly defined. Whether the averaging depends on the experimental methods (e.g., pulse sequences) or conditions (e.g., MAS frequency, magnitude of anisotropic interaction, radio-frequency field amplitudes) is not fully understood. To investigate these questions, we performed numerical simulations of dynamic systems based on the stochastic Liouville equation using several experiments for recoupling the dipolar coupling, chemical-shift anisotropy or quadrupolar coupling. As described in the literature, the transition between slow motion, where parameters characterizing the anisotropic interaction are not averaged, and fast motion, where the tensors are averaged leading to a scaled anisotropic quantity, occurs over a window of motional rate constants that depends mainly on the strength of the interaction. This transition region can span 2 orders of magnitude in exchange-rate constants (typically in the microsecond range) but depends only marginally on the employed recoupling scheme or sample spinning frequency. The transition region often coincides with a fast relaxation of coherences, making precise quantitative measurements difficult. Residual couplings in off-magic-angle experiments, however, average over longer timescales of motion. While in principle one may gain information on the timescales of motion from the transition area, extracting such information is hampered by low signal-to-noise ratio in experimental spectra due to fast relaxation that occurs in the same region.","lang":"eng"}],"tmp":{"name":"Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International Public License (CC-BY 4.0)","image":"/images/cc_by.png","legal_code_url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/legalcode","short":"CC BY (4.0)"},"publisher":"Copernicus Publications","year":"2024","volume":5,"publication":"Magnetic Resonance","scopus_import":"1","pmid":1,"status":"public","ddc":["530"],"quality_controlled":"1","intvolume":" 5"},{"doi":"10.3929/ethz-b-000666765","fulldoi":"https://doi.org/10.3929/ethz-b-000666765","oa_version":"None","_id":"22906","contributor":[{"last_name":"Ernst","contributor_type":"contact_person","first_name":"Matthias"},{"last_name":"Aebischer","contributor_type":"data_collector","first_name":"Kathrin"},{"contributor_type":"data_collector","last_name":"Ernst","first_name":"Matthias"},{"contributor_type":"data_collector","last_name":"Schanda","first_name":"Paul"},{"last_name":"Becker","contributor_type":"data_collector","first_name":"Lea Marie"},{"contributor_type":"producer","last_name":" Ernst","first_name":"Matthias"},{"contributor_type":"producer","last_name":" Aebischer","first_name":"Kathrin"},{"contributor_type":"producer","last_name":"Schanda","first_name":"Paul "},{"first_name":"Lea Marie","contributor_type":"producer","last_name":"Becker"}],"year":"2024","day":"03","article_processing_charge":"No","status":"public","ddc":["530"],"OA_type":"green","author":[{"full_name":"Aebischer, Kathrin","first_name":"Kathrin","last_name":"Aebischer"}],"oa":1,"type":"research_data_reference","publisher":"Repository","related_material":{"record":[{"status":"public","id":"17161","relation":"used_in_publication"}]},"OA_place":"repository","month":"04","title":"Evaluating the motional time scales contributing to averaged anisotropic interactions in MAS solid-state NMR","date_published":"2024-04-03T00:00:00Z","user_id":"317138e5-6ab7-11ef-aa6d-ffef3953e345","date_created":"2026-09-11T08:49:48Z","department":[{"_id":"PaSc"}],"date_updated":"2026-09-11T08:49:55Z","citation":{"chicago":"Aebischer, Kathrin. “Evaluating the Motional Time Scales Contributing to Averaged Anisotropic Interactions in MAS Solid-State NMR.” Repository, 2024. <a href=\"https://doi.org/10.3929/ethz-b-000666765\">https://doi.org/10.3929/ethz-b-000666765</a>.","ista":"Aebischer K. 2024. However, direct evidence for this hypothesis is lacking. To test this conjecture, we combined chemical potentiation, functional analysis by paired pre-postsynaptic recordings, and structural analysis by electron microscopy (EM) and freeze-fracture replica labeling (FRL) at the rodent hippocampal mossy fiber synapse, a key synapse in the trisynaptic circuit of the hippocampus. Biophysical analysis of synaptic transmission revealed that forskolin-induced chemical potentiation increased the readily releasable vesicle pool size and vesicular release probability by 146% and 49%, respectively. Structural analysis of mossy fiber synapses by EM and FRL demonstrated an increase in the number of vesicles close to the plasma membrane and the number of clusters of the priming protein Munc13-1, indicating an increase in the number of both docked and primed vesicles. Furthermore, FRL analysis revealed a significant reduction of the distance between Munc13-1 and CaV2.1 Ca2+ channels, suggesting reconfiguration of the channel-vesicle coupling nanotopography. However, direct evidence for this hypothesis is lacking. To test this conjecture, we combined chemical potentiation, functional analysis by paired pre-postsynaptic recordings, and structural analysis by electron microscopy (EM) and freeze-fracture replica labeling (FRL) at the murine hippocampal mossy fiber synapse, a key synapse in the trisynaptic circuit of the hippocampus. Our results indicate that presynaptic plasticity is associated with structural reorganization of active zones. We propose that changes in potential nanoscopic organization at synaptic vesicle release sites may be correlates of learning and memory at a plastic central synapse."}],"corr_author":"1","publisher":"Institute of Science and Technology Austria"},{"article_number":"A289","user_id":"317138e5-6ab7-11ef-aa6d-ffef3953e345","title":"Binarity at LOw Metallicity (BLOeM): A spectroscopic VLT monitoring survey of massive stars in the SMC","publication_identifier":{"eissn":["1432-0746"],"issn":["0004-6361"]},"publication_status":"published","external_id":{"arxiv":["2407.14593"],"isi":["001336770600014"]},"citation":{"apa":"Shenar, T., Bodensteiner, J., Sana, H., Crowther, P. However, knowledge of the binary properties of massive stars at low metallicity, and therefore in conditions approaching those of the Early Universe, remain sparse. We present the Binarity at LOw Metallicity (BLOeM) campaign, an ESO large programme designed to obtain 25 epochs of spectroscopy for 929 massive stars in the Small Magellanic Cloud, allowing us to probe multiplicity in the lowest-metallicity conditions to date (Z = 0.2 Z⊙). BLOeM will provide (i) the binary fraction, (ii) the orbital configurations of systems with periods of P ≲ 3 yr, (iii) dormant black-hole binary candidates (OB+BH), and (iv) a legacy database of physical parameters of massive stars at low metallicity. Main sequence (OB-type) and evolved (OBAF-type) massive stars are observed with the LR02 setup of the GIRAFFE instrument of the Very Large Telescope (3960–4570 Å resolving power R = 6200; typical signal-to-noise ratio(S/N) ≈70–100). This paper utilises the first nine epochs obtained over a three-month time period. We describe the survey and data reduction, perform a spectral classification of the stacked spectra, and construct a Hertzsprung-Russell diagram of the sample via spectral-type and photometric calibrations. Our detailed classification reveals that the sample covers spectral types from O4 to F5, spanning the effective temperature and luminosity ranges 6.5 ≲ Teff/kK ≲ 45 and 3.7 < log L/L⊙ < 6.1 and initial masses of 8 ≲ Mini ≲ 80 M⊙. The sample comprises 159 O-type stars, 331 early B-type (B0–3) dwarfs and giants (luminosity classes V–III), 303 early B-type supergiants (II–I), and 136 late-type BAF supergiants. At least 82 stars are OBe stars: 20 O-type and 62 B-type (13% and 11% of the respective samples). In addition, the sample includes 4 high-mass X-ray binaries, 3 stars resembling luminous blue variables, 2 bloated stripped-star candidates, 2 candidate magnetic stars, and 74 eclipsing binaries."}],"tmp":{"name":"Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International Public License (CC-BY 4.0)","image":"/images/cc_by.png","legal_code_url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/legalcode","short":"CC BY (4.0)"}},{"intvolume":" 6","ddc":["530"],"status":"public","quality_controlled":"1","OA_type":"gold","DOAJ_listed":"1","scopus_import":"1","researchdata_availability":"no","APC_amount":"2933,65 EUR","publication":"Physical Review Research","year":"2024","volume":6,"publisher":"American Physical Society","abstract":[{"lang":"eng","text":"Precision sensing and manipulation of milligram-scale mechanical oscillators has attracted growing interest in the fields of table-top explorations of gravity and tests of quantum mechanics at macroscopic scales. Torsional oscillators present an opportunity in this regard due to their remarked isolation from environmental noise. For torsional motion, an effective employment of optical cavities to enhance optomechanical interactions—as already established for linear oscillators—so far faced certain challenges. Here, we propose a concept for sensing and manipulating torsional motion, where exclusively the torsional rotations of a pendulum are mapped onto the path length of a single two-mirror optical cavity. The concept inherently alleviates many limitations of previous approaches. A proof-of-principle experiment is conducted with a rigidly controlled pendulum to explore the sensing aspects of the concept and to identify practical limitations in a potential state-of-the art setup. Based on this study, we anticipate development of precision torque sensors utilizing torsional pendulums that can support sensitivities below 10−19Nm/√Hz, while the motion of the pendulums are dominated by quantum radiation pressure noise at sub-microwatts of incoming laser power. These developments will provide horizons for experiments at the interface of quantum mechanics and gravity."}],"tmp":{"name":"Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International Public License (CC-BY 4.0)","image":"/images/cc_by.png","legal_code_url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/legalcode","short":"CC BY (4.0)"},"corr_author":"1","author":[{"last_name":"Agafonova","orcid":"0000-0003-0582-2946","first_name":"Sofya","id":"09501ff6-dca7-11ea-a8ae-b3e0b9166e80","full_name":"Agafonova, Sofya"},{"id":"4328fa4c-f128-11eb-9611-c107b0fe4d51","first_name":"Umang","full_name":"Mishra, Umang","last_name":"Mishra"},{"orcid":"0000-0002-4947-8924","id":"2E054C4C-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","first_name":"Fritz R","full_name":"Diorico, Fritz R","last_name":"Diorico"},{"last_name":"Hosten","orcid":"0000-0002-2031-204X","first_name":"Onur","id":"4C02D85E-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","full_name":"Hosten, Onur"}],"oa":1,"file_date_updated":"2024-02-12T11:46:50Z","date_published":"2024-02-05T00:00:00Z","OA_place":"publisher","supplementarymaterial":"no","month":"02","date_updated":"2026-09-17T09:13:08Z","das_tickbox":"0","file":[{"content_type":"application/pdf","relation":"main_file","file_size":1437167,"file_id":"14981","access_level":"open_access","date_updated":"2024-02-12T11:46:50Z","creator":"dernst","checksum":"3a39ebffb24c1cc1dd0b547a726dc52d","date_created":"2024-02-12T11:46:50Z","success":1,"file_name":"2024_PhysicalRevResearch_Agafonova.pdf"}],"date_created":"2024-02-12T11:42:18Z","acknowledgement":"We thank Pere Rosselló for his contributions to the initial modeling of the presented sensing technique. Simple considerations suggest that such dynamics should be relatively fast, but the functional cycles of many proteins are often relatively slow. Sophisticated experimental methods are starting to tackle this dichotomy and shed light on the contribution of large-scale conformational dynamics to protein function. In this review, we focus on the contribution of single-molecule Förster resonance energy transfer and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopies to the study of conformational dynamics. We briefly describe the state of the art in each of these techniques and then point out their similarities and differences, as well as the relative strengths and weaknesses of each. Several case studies, in which the connection between fast conformational dynamics and slower function has been demonstrated, are then introduced and discussed. These examples include both enzymes and large protein machines, some of which have been studied by both NMR and fluorescence spectroscopies."}],"publisher":"Annual Reviews","title":"NMR and single-molecule FRET insights into fast protein motions and their relation to function","external_id":{"isi":["001278237500012"],"pmid":["38346243"]},"publication_status":"published","publication_identifier":{"issn":["1936-122X"],"eissn":["1936-1238"]},"user_id":"317138e5-6ab7-11ef-aa6d-ffef3953e345","citation":{"short":"P. Because of its comparatively large size, this synapse is accessible to direct presynaptic recording, allowing a rigorous investigation of the biophysical mechanisms of synaptic transmission and plasticity. Furthermore, because of its placement in the very center of the hippocampal memory circuit, this synapse seems to be critically involved in several higher network functions, such as learning, memory, pattern separation, and pattern completion. Recent work based on new technologies in both nanoanatomy and nanophysiology, including presynaptic patch-clamp recording, paired recording, super-resolution light microscopy, and freeze-fracture and “flash-and-freeze” electron microscopy, has provided new insights into the structure, biophysics, and network function of this intriguing synapse. This chapter provides a historical perspective on DNA cloning, presents a detailed discussion on state-of-the-art in vitro and in vivo homology-based methodologies, covering the basics of how to perform all major plasmid modifications (sub-cloning, site-directed mutagenesis, insertions, and deletions), and gives examples of how to apply these techniques for complex DNA cloning projects.","lang":"eng"}],"author":[{"first_name":"Jake","id":"63836096-4690-11EA-BD4E-32803DDC885E","orcid":"0000-0002-8698-3823","full_name":"Watson, Jake","last_name":"Watson"},{"last_name":"Arroyo-Urea","full_name":"Arroyo-Urea, Sandra","first_name":"Sandra"},{"last_name":"García-Nafría","first_name":"Javier","full_name":"García-Nafría, Javier"}],"scopus_import":"1","quality_controlled":"1","status":"public","researchdata_availability":"no","year":"2024","place":"Boca Raton","publication":"Handbook of Molecular Biotechnology"},{"oa":1,"file_date_updated":"2024-12-03T14:07:04Z","author":[{"last_name":"Lauwereyns","first_name":"Jan","full_name":"Lauwereyns, Jan"},{"full_name":"Bajramovic, Jeffrey","first_name":"Jeffrey","last_name":"Bajramovic"},{"first_name":"Bettina","full_name":"Bert, Bettina","last_name":"Bert"},{"last_name":"Camenzind","full_name":"Camenzind, Samuel","first_name":"Samuel"},{"last_name":"De Kock","first_name":"Joery","full_name":"De Kock, Joery"},{"full_name":"Elezović, Alisa","first_name":"Alisa","last_name":"Elezović"},{"full_name":"Erden, Sevilay","first_name":"Sevilay","last_name":"Erden"},{"first_name":"Fernando","full_name":"Gonzalez-Uarquin, Fernando","last_name":"Gonzalez-Uarquin"},{"full_name":"Ulman, Yesim Isil","first_name":"Yesim Isil","last_name":"Ulman"},{"last_name":"Hoffmann","full_name":"Hoffmann, Orsolya Ivett","first_name":"Orsolya Ivett"},{"last_name":"Kitsara","full_name":"Kitsara, Maria","first_name":"Maria"},{"full_name":"Kostomitsopoulos, Nikolaos","first_name":"Nikolaos","last_name":"Kostomitsopoulos"},{"first_name":"Winfried","full_name":"Neuhaus, Winfried","last_name":"Neuhaus"},{"last_name":"Petit-Demouliere","first_name":"Benoit","full_name":"Petit-Demouliere, Benoit"},{"last_name":"Pollo","first_name":"Simone","full_name":"Pollo, Simone"},{"last_name":"Riso","full_name":"Riso, Brígida","first_name":"Brígida"},{"last_name":"Schober","id":"80b0a0ef-4b9f-11ec-b119-8d9d94c4a1d8","first_name":"Sophie","full_name":"Schober, Sophie"},{"first_name":"Athanassia","full_name":"Sotiropoulos, Athanassia","last_name":"Sotiropoulos"},{"last_name":"Thomas","full_name":"Thomas, Aurélie","first_name":"Aurélie"},{"first_name":"Augusto","full_name":"Vitale, Augusto","last_name":"Vitale"},{"full_name":"Wilflingseder, Doris","first_name":"Doris","last_name":"Wilflingseder"},{"full_name":"Ahluwalia, Arti","first_name":"Arti","last_name":"Ahluwalia"}],"abstract":[{"text":"Many scientific breakthroughs have depended on animal research, yet the ethical concerns surrounding the use of animals in experimentation have long prompted discussions about humane treatment and responsible scientific practice. As a consequence of their dynamic function, they receive considerable interest in the areas of supramolecular chemistry, asymmetric catalysis and responsive materials. Among the emerging classes of responsive photochromic molecules, multistate first-generation molecular motors driven by benign visible light remain unexplored, which limits the exploitation of the full potential of these mechanical light-powered systems. Herein, we describe a series of all-visible-light-driven first-generation molecular motors based on the salicylidene Schiff base functionality. Remarkable redshifts up to 100 nm in absorption are achieved compared to conventional first-generation motor structures. Taking advantage of all-visible-light-driven multistate motor scaffolds, adaptive behaviour is found as well, and potential application in multistate photoluminescence is demonstrated. These functional visible-light-responsive motors will likely stimulate the design and synthesis of more sophisticated nanomachinery with a myriad of future applications in powering dynamic systems.","lang":"eng"}],"author":[{"last_name":"Van Vliet","first_name":"Sven","full_name":"Van Vliet, Sven"},{"last_name":"Sheng","full_name":"Sheng, Jinyu","first_name":"Jinyu","id":"639f0526-27c9-11ee-95a6-966cd7f102d8"},{"first_name":"Charlotte N.","full_name":"Stindt, Charlotte N.","last_name":"Stindt"},{"last_name":"Feringa","first_name":"Ben L.","full_name":"Feringa, Ben L."}],"oa":1,"file_date_updated":"2024-08-12T08:23:10Z","publisher":"Springer Nature","supplementarymaterial":"yes","month":"07","date_published":"2024-07-31T00:00:00Z","dataavailabilitystatement":"Data that support the findings of this study are available within the Supplementary Information. In particular, the design of photochemically triggered-orthogonal systems integrated into solid materials that enable multiple dynamic control over their properties remains a longstanding challenge. Here, we report the orthogonal and reversible control of two types of photoswitches in an integrated solid porous framework, that is, visible-light responsive o-fluoroazobenzene and nitro-spiropyran motifs. The properties of the constructed material can be selectively controlled by different wavelengths of light thus generating four distinct states providing a basis for dynamic multifunctional materials. Solid-state NMR spectroscopy demonstrated the selective transformation of the azobenzene switch in the bulk, which in turn modulates N2 and CO2 adsorption."}],"author":[{"last_name":"Sheng","full_name":"Sheng, Jinyu","first_name":"Jinyu","id":"639f0526-27c9-11ee-95a6-966cd7f102d8"},{"full_name":"Perego, Jacopo","first_name":"Jacopo","last_name":"Perego"},{"last_name":"Bracco","first_name":"Silvia","full_name":"Bracco, Silvia"},{"first_name":"Piotr","full_name":"Cieciórski, Piotr","last_name":"Cieciórski"},{"last_name":"Danowski","first_name":"Wojciech","full_name":"Danowski, Wojciech"},{"last_name":"Comotti","first_name":"Angiolina","full_name":"Comotti, Angiolina"},{"first_name":"Ben L.","full_name":"Feringa, Ben L.","last_name":"Feringa"}],"oa":1,"file_date_updated":"2024-06-03T10:33:17Z","intvolume":" 63","status":"public","quality_controlled":"1","ddc":["540"],"pmid":1,"scopus_import":"1","researchdata_availability":"yes","publication":"Angewandte Chemie International Edition","year":"2024","volume":63},{"file_date_updated":"2025-01-09T09:38:51Z","oa":1,"author":[{"last_name":"Shan","first_name":"Yahan","full_name":"Shan, Yahan"},{"last_name":"Sheng","id":"639f0526-27c9-11ee-95a6-966cd7f102d8","first_name":"Jinyu","full_name":"Sheng, Jinyu"},{"first_name":"Qi","full_name":"Zhang, Qi","last_name":"Zhang"},{"last_name":"Stuart","full_name":"Stuart, Marc C.A.","first_name":"Marc C.A."},{"last_name":"Qu","full_name":"Qu, Da Hui","first_name":"Da Hui"},{"full_name":"Feringa, Ben L.","first_name":"Ben L.","last_name":"Feringa"}],"abstract":[{"lang":"eng","text":"Photoisomerization and photoluminescence are two distinct energy dissipation pathways in light-driven molecular motors. The photoisomerization properties of discrete molecular motors have been well established in solution, but their photoluminescent properties have been rarely reported—especially in aggregates. Here, it is shown that an overcrowded alkene-based molecular motor exhibits distinct dynamic properties in solution and aggregate states, for example, gel and solid states. Despite the poor emissive properties of molecular motors in solution, a bright emission is observed in the aggregate states, including in gel and the crystalline solid. The emission wavelength is highly dependent on the nature of the supramolecular packing and order in the aggregates. As a result, the fluorescent color can be readily tuned reversibly via mechanical grinding and vapor fuming, which provides a new platform for developing multi-stimuli functional materials."}],"tmp":{"name":"Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International Public License (CC-BY 4.0)","image":"/images/cc_by.png","legal_code_url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/legalcode","short":"CC BY (4.0)"},"publisher":"Wiley","volume":5,"year":"2024","publication":"Aggregate","researchdata_availability":"no","scopus_import":"1","OA_type":"gold","status":"public","quality_controlled":"1","ddc":["540"],"intvolume":" 5","department":[{"_id":"RaKl"}],"date_created":"2024-05-26T22:00:58Z","acknowledgement":"This work was supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (grant nos. 22220102004, 22025503), Shanghai Municipal Science and Technology Major Project (grant no. 2018SHZDZX03), the Innovation Program of Shanghai Municipal Education Commission (2023ZKZD40), the Fundamental Research Funds for the Central Universities, the Program of Introducing Talents of Discipline to Universities (grant no. Such gases exhibit Bose–Einstein condensation. The binding energy is defined as the energy it takes to remove one particle from the gas. In this article, we prove an asymptotic expansion for the binding energy, and compute the first orders explicitly for the homogeneous gas. Our result addresses in particular a conjecture by Nam (Lett Math Phys 108(1):141–159, 2018), and provides an asymptotic expansion of the ionization energy of bosonic atoms."}]}]
