Despite decades of research, the development and function of motor circuits remain poorly understood. Breakthroughs in the field recently provided new tools and tractable model systems that set the stage to discover the molecular mechanisms and circuit logic underlying motor control. Here, we describe recent advances from both vertebrate (mouse, frog) and invertebrate (nematode, fruit fly) systems on cellular and molecular mechanisms that enable motor circuits to develop and function and highlight conserved and divergent mechanisms necessary for motor circuit development.","lang":"eng"}],"month":"10","day":"02","user_id":"2DF688A6-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","article_type":"original","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"department":[{"_id":"LoSw"}],"publication_status":"published","type":"journal_article","doi":"10.1523/JNEUROSCI.1238-24.2024","publisher":"Society for Neuroscience","project":[{"grant_number":"101041551","_id":"ebb66355-77a9-11ec-83b8-b8ac210a4dae","name":"Development and Evolution of Tetrapod Motor Circuits"}],"title":"Molecular and cellular mechanisms of motor circuit development","issue":"40","date_published":"2024-10-02T00:00:00Z","external_id":{"isi":["001335212200016"],"pmid":["39358025"]},"OA_type":"hybrid","quality_controlled":"1","intvolume":" 44","author":[{"first_name":"Paschalis","last_name":"Kratsios","full_name":"Kratsios, Paschalis"},{"full_name":"Zampieri, Niccolò","first_name":"Niccolò","last_name":"Zampieri"},{"full_name":"Carrillo, Robert","first_name":"Robert","last_name":"Carrillo"},{"full_name":"Mizumoto, Kota","last_name":"Mizumoto","first_name":"Kota"},{"orcid":"0000-0001-9242-5601","id":"56BE8254-C4F0-11E9-8E45-0B23E6697425","first_name":"Lora Beatrice Jaeger","last_name":"Sweeney","full_name":"Sweeney, Lora Beatrice Jaeger"},{"full_name":"Philippidou, Polyxeni","last_name":"Philippidou","first_name":"Polyxeni"}],"_id":"18305","acknowledgement":"Work in the authors’ labs is funded by the Helmholtz Association (N.Z.), National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) R01NS116365 (P.K.), NINDS R01NS123439 and National Science Foundation IOS-2048080 (R.C.), NINDS R01NS114510 (P.P.), Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada RGPIN-2021-03154 (K.M.) and Horizon Europe European Research Council Starting Grant Number 101041551 (L.B.S.). We examine both the time-averaged and time-series alkali spectral flux individually, over 4 nights at a hot Saturn system on a ∼2.8 day orbit about a Sun-like star WASP-49 A. Very Large Telescope/ESPRESSO observations are analyzed, providing new constraints. We recover the previously confirmed residual sodium flux uniquely when averaged, whereas night-to-night Na i varies by more than an order of magnitude. On HARPS/3.6 m Epoch II, we report a Doppler redshift at vΓ,NaD = + 9.7 ± 1.6 km s−1 with respect to the planet's rest frame. Upon examining the lightcurves, we confirm night-to-night variability, on the order of ∼1%–4% in NaD, rarely coinciding with exoplanet transit, not readily explained by stellar activity, starspots, tellurics, or the interstellar medium. Coincident with the ∼+10 km s−1 Doppler redshift, we detect a transient sodium absorption event dFNaD/F⋆ = 3.6% ± 1% at a relative difference of ΔFNaD(t) ∼ 4.4% ± 1%, lasting ΔtNaD ≳ 40 minutes. Since exoplanetary alkali signatures are blueshifted due to the natural vector of radiation pressure, estimated here at roughly ∼−5.7 km s−1, the radial velocity is rather at +15.4 km s−1, far larger than any known exoplanet system. Given that the redshift magnitude vΓ is in between the Roche limit and dynamically stable satellite orbits, the transient sodium may be a putative indication of a natural satellite orbiting WASP-49 A b."}],"publication":"Astrophysical Journal Letters","date_updated":"2025-09-08T14:18:18Z","DOAJ_listed":"1","ddc":["520"],"citation":{"mla":"Oza, Apurva V., et al. “Redshifted Sodium Transient near Exoplanet Transit.” Astrophysical Journal Letters, vol. 973, no. 2, L53, IOP Publishing, 2024, doi:10.3847/2041-8213/ad6b29.","ama":"Oza AV, Seidel JV, Hoeijmakers HJ, et al. To do so, we present an algorithm to efficiently maintain a coreset, a compressed version of the dataset, that allows easy computation of a clustering solution at query time. Our coreset algorithm has near-optimal update time of Õ(k) in general metric spaces, which reduces to Õ(d) in the Euclidean space ℝ^d. The query time is O(k²) in general metrics, and O(kd) in ℝ^d. To maintain a constant-factor approximation for k-median and k-means clustering in Euclidean space, this directly leads to an algorithm with update time Õ(d), and query time Õ(kd + k²). To maintain a O(polylog k)-approximation, the query time is reduced to Õ(kd).","lang":"eng"}],"publication":"32nd Annual European Symposium on Algorithms","date_updated":"2025-12-02T13:49:11Z","ddc":["000"],"citation":{"chicago":"La Tour, Max Dupré, Monika Henzinger, and David Saulpic. “Fully Dynamic K-Means Coreset in near-Optimal Update Time.” In 32nd Annual European Symposium on Algorithms, Vol. 308. It is already well understood: previous works [Duan-Pettie STOC'10; Long-Saranurak FOCS'22] achieve query time linear in the number of failed vertices, and it is conditionally optimal as long as we require preprocessing time polynomial in the size of the graph and update time polynomial in the number of failed vertices. We revisit this problem in the paradigm of algorithms with predictions: we ask if the query time can be improved if the set of failed vertices can be predicted beforehand up to a small number of errors. More specifically, we design a data structure that, given a graph G = (V,E) and a set of vertices predicted to fail D̂ ⊆ V of size d = |D̂|, preprocesses it in time Õ(d|E|) and then can receive an update given as the symmetric difference between the predicted and the actual set of failed vertices D̂△D = (D̂ ⧵ D) ∪ (D ⧵ D̂) of size η = |D̂△D|, process it in time Õ(η⁴), and after that answer connectivity queries in G ⧵ D in time O(η). Viewed from another perspective, our data structure provides an improvement over the state of the art for the fully dynamic subgraph connectivity problem in the sensitivity setting [Henzinger-Neumann ESA'16]. We argue that the preprocessing time and query time of our data structure are conditionally optimal under standard fine-grained complexity assumptions."}],"year":"2024","isi":1,"title":"Connectivity oracles for predictable vertex failures","file":[{"access_level":"open_access","file_size":853914,"creator":"dernst","file_id":"18455","content_type":"application/pdf","file_name":"2024_LIPICs_Hu.pdf","date_created":"2024-10-21T10:03:48Z","checksum":"ab1f2f9161549a8763eda15db40e022c","relation":"main_file","date_updated":"2024-10-21T10:03:48Z","success":1}],"publication_status":"published","department":[{"_id":"MoHe"}],"type":"conference","doi":"10.4230/LIPIcs.ESA.2024.72","publisher":"Schloss Dagstuhl - Leibniz-Zentrum für Informatik","acknowledgement":"Part of this work was done when Evangelos Kosinas was at University of Ioannina and Adam Polak was at Max Planck Institute of Informatics.\r\n","_id":"18309","date_created":"2024-10-13T22:01:50Z","article_processing_charge":"Yes","corr_author":"1","OA_type":"gold","quality_controlled":"1","date_published":"2024-09-01T00:00:00Z","conference":{"location":"London, United Kingdom","start_date":"2024-09-02","end_date":"2024-09-04","name":"ESA: European Symposium on Algorithms"},"tmp":{"name":"Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International Public License (CC-BY 4.0)","image":"/images/cc_by.png","legal_code_url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/legalcode","short":"CC BY (4.0)"},"external_id":{"isi":["001545622400072"],"arxiv":["2312.08489"]},"intvolume":" 308","author":[{"first_name":"Bingbing","last_name":"Hu","full_name":"Hu, Bingbing"},{"last_name":"Kosinas","first_name":"Evangelos","id":"4c7f9625-dbbc-11ee-9d86-bdcc2db5a949","full_name":"Kosinas, Evangelos"},{"last_name":"Polak","first_name":"Adam","full_name":"Polak, Adam"}]},{"pmid":1,"citation":{"ista":"Kitsara M, Smajlhodžić-Deljo M, Gurbeta Pokvic L, Bert B, Bubalo N, Erden S, Franco NH, Chirico G, Gómez Raja J, Gonzalez-Uarquin F, Lang A, Linklater N, Mojsova S, Olsson IAS, Sandvig I, Schaffert A, Schmit M, Schober S, Sevastre B, Wilflingseder D, Ahluwalia A, Neuhaus W. 2024. As a consequence, they\r\nconjecture an equivalence between categories of BBB and BAA-branes. At the classical\r\nlevel, this mirror symmetry is given by T-duality between semi-flat hyperkähler structures on\r\nalgebraic integrable systems.\r\nIn this thesis, we investigate the T-duality relation between hyperkähler structures and the\r\ncorresponding branes on affine torus bundles. We use the techniques of generalized geometry\r\nto show that semi-flat hyperkähler structures are T-dual on algebraic integrable systems.\r\nWe also describe T-duality for generalized branes. Motivated by Fourier-Mukai transform\r\nwe upgrade the T-duality between generalized branes to T-duality of submanifolds endowed\r\nwith U(1)-bundles and connections. This T-duality in the appropriate context specializes to\r\nT-duality between BBB and BAA-branes.\r\n"}],"year":"2024","date_updated":"2026-04-07T12:42:44Z","supervisor":[{"orcid":"0000-0002-9582-2634","id":"4A0666D8-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","first_name":"Tamás","last_name":"Hausel","full_name":"Hausel, Tamás"}],"language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"file_date_updated":"2024-10-24T08:09:13Z","day":"24","alternative_title":["ISTA Thesis"],"user_id":"ba8df636-2132-11f1-aed0-ed93e2281fdd","month":"10"},{"page":"999-1054","article_processing_charge":"No","date_created":"2026-06-19T08:13:06Z","_id":"22065","author":[{"full_name":"Killip, Rowan","last_name":"Killip","first_name":"Rowan"},{"full_name":"Laurens, Thierry","last_name":"Laurens","first_name":"Thierry"},{"id":"056daca0-b8d1-11f0-964f-f91054abf8ca","first_name":"Monica","last_name":"Visan","full_name":"Visan, Monica"}],"intvolume":" 236","external_id":{"arxiv":["2304.00124"]},"date_published":"2024-06-01T00:00:00Z","quality_controlled":"1","OA_type":"green","issue":"3","title":"Sharp well-posedness for the Benjamin–Ono equation","publisher":"Springer Nature","type":"journal_article","doi":"10.1007/s00222-024-01250-8","publication_status":"published","user_id":"2DF688A6-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","day":"01","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"extern":"1","article_type":"original","month":"06","year":"2024","abstract":[{"lang":"eng","text":"The Benjamin–Ono equation is shown to be well-posed, both on the line and on the circle, in the Sobolev spaces H^s for s > -1/2. Well-posedness has long been known for s ≥ 0, see [55], but not previously for any s < 0. The scaling-critical value s = −1/2 is necessarily excluded here, since instantaneous norm inflation is known to occur [11, 40, 48]. We also prove (in a parallel fashion) well-posedness of the real- and complex-valued modified Korteweg–de Vries equations in H^s(R) for any s > −1/2. The best regularity achieved previously was s ≥ 1/4 (see [15, 24, 33, 39]). To overcome the failure of uniform continuity of the data-to-solution map, we employ the method of commuting flows introduced in [37]. In stark contrast with our arguments in [37], an essential ingredient in this paper is the demonstration of a local smoothing effect for both equations. Despite the nonperturbative nature of the well-posedness, the gain of derivatives matches that of the underlying linear equation. To compensate for the local nature of the smoothing estimates, we also demonstrate tightness of orbits. The proofs of both local smoothing and tightness rely on our discovery of a new one-parameter family of coercive microscopic conservation laws that remain meaningful at this low regularity. The main contributors to frontal ablation are iceberg calving and submarine melting, with calving often being the largest. However, submarine melting, in addition to its direct contribution to mass loss, also promotes calving through the changes induced in the stress field at the glacier terminus, so both processes should be jointly analysed. Among the factors influencing submarine melting, the formation of a buoyant plume due to the emergence of fresh subglacial water at the glacier grounding line plays a key role. In this study we used Elmer/Ice to develop a 3D glacier dynamics model including calving and subglacial hydrology coupled with a line plume model to calculate the calving front position at every time step. We applied this model to the Hansbreen–Hansbukta glacier–fjord system in southern Spitsbergen, Svalbard, where a large set of data are available for both the glacier and the fjord from September 2008 to March 2011. We found that our 3D model reproduced the expected seasonal cycle of advance–retreat. Besides, the modelled front positions were in good agreement with the observed front positions at the central part of the calving front, with longitudinal differences, on average, below 15 m for the period from December 2009 to March 2011. But there were regions of the front, especially the eastern margin, that presented major differences.","lang":"eng"}],"year":"2024","month":"04","PlanS_conform":"1","article_type":"original","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"extern":"1","day":"23","user_id":"2DF688A6-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","status":"public","publication_identifier":{"eissn":["1994-0424"]},"scopus_import":"1","main_file_link":[{"url":"https://doi.org/10.5194/tc-18-1911-2024","open_access":"1"}],"OA_place":"publisher","oa_version":"Published Version","has_accepted_license":"1","oa":1,"volume":18,"citation":{"short":"J.M. We perform a spectroscopic search for broad Hα emitters at z ≈ 4–6 using deep JWST/NIRCam imaging and wide field slitless spectroscopy from the EIGER and FRESCO surveys. We identify 20 Hα lines at z = 4.2–5.5 that have broad components with line widths from ∼1200–3700 km s−1, contributing ∼30%–90% of the total line flux. We interpret these broad components as being powered by accretion onto SMBHs with implied masses ∼107–8M⊙. In the UV luminosity range MUV,AGN+host = −21 to −18, we measure number densities of ≈10−5 cMpc−3. This is an order of magnitude higher than expected from extrapolating quasar UV luminosity functions (LFs). Yet, such AGN are found in only <1% of star-forming galaxies at z ∼ 5. The number density discrepancy is much lower when compared to the broad Hα LF. The SMBH mass function agrees with large cosmological simulations. In two objects, we detect complex Hα profiles that we tentatively interpret as caused by absorption signatures from dense gas fueling SMBH growth and outflows. We may be witnessing early AGN feedback that will clear dust-free pathways through which more massive blue quasars are seen. We uncover a strong correlation between reddening and the fraction of total galaxy luminosity arising from faint AGN. This implies that early SMBH growth is highly obscured and that faint AGN are only minor contributors to cosmic reionization.","lang":"eng"}],"isi":1,"year":"2024","APC_amount":"5666,27 EUR"},{"publication_status":"published","department":[{"_id":"IlCa"}],"publisher":"IOP Publishing","type":"journal_article","doi":"10.3847/2041-8213/ad713b","title":"Expansion properties of the young supernova type Iax remnant Pa 30 revealed","project":[{"_id":"B67AFEDC-15C9-11EA-A837-991A96BB2854","name":"IST Austria Open Access Fund"}],"issue":"1","file":[{"access_level":"open_access","creator":"dernst","file_size":90328868,"file_id":"18573","content_type":"application/pdf","file_name":"2024_AstrophysJourLetters_Cunningham.pdf","date_created":"2024-11-20T12:24:52Z","checksum":"51e790dd3d85ca984e656734f9f611da","relation":"main_file","date_updated":"2024-11-20T12:24:52Z","success":1}],"quality_controlled":"1","OA_type":"gold","tmp":{"name":"Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International Public License (CC-BY 4.0)","image":"/images/cc_by.png","legal_code_url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/legalcode","short":"CC BY (4.0)"},"external_id":{"isi":["001340831400001"],"arxiv":["2410.10940"]},"date_published":"2024-10-24T00:00:00Z","author":[{"full_name":"Cunningham, Tim","first_name":"Tim","last_name":"Cunningham"},{"orcid":"0000-0002-4770-5388","id":"8ae5b6e7-2a03-11ee-914d-b58ed7a3b47d","first_name":"Ilaria","last_name":"Caiazzo","full_name":"Caiazzo, Ilaria"},{"first_name":"Nikolaus Z.","last_name":"Prusinski","full_name":"Prusinski, Nikolaus Z."},{"first_name":"James","last_name":"Fuller","full_name":"Fuller, James"},{"first_name":"John C.","last_name":"Raymond","full_name":"Raymond, John C."},{"full_name":"Kulkarni, S. In particular, Pa 30 exhibits a complex morphology, with a unique radial and filamentary structure, and it hosts a hot stellar remnant at its center, which displays oxygen-dominated, ultrafast winds. Because of the surviving stellar remnant and the lack of hydrogen and helium in its filaments, it has been suggested that Pa 30 is the product of a failed thermonuclear explosion in a near- or super-Chandrasekhar white dwarf, which created a subluminous transient, a rare subtype of the Ia class of supernovae called type Iax. We present here a detailed study of the 3D structure and velocities of a full radial section of the remnant. The Integral Field Unit observations, obtained with the new red channel of the Keck Cosmic Web Imager spectrograph, reveal that the ejecta are consistent with being ballistic, with velocities close to the free-expansion velocity. Additionally, we detect a large cavity inside the supernova remnant and a sharp inner edge to the filamentary structure, which coincides with the outer edge of a bright ring detected in infrared images. Finally, we detect a strong asymmetry in the amount of ejecta along the line of sight, which might hint at an asymmetric explosion. Our analysis provides strong confirmation that the explosion originated from SN 1181.","lang":"eng"}],"isi":1,"year":"2024","APC_amount":"3080,76 EUR","month":"10","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"article_type":"original","user_id":"2DF688A6-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","day":"24","file_date_updated":"2024-11-20T12:24:52Z"},{"department":[{"_id":"MaIb"}],"publication_status":"published","status":"public","article_number":"222","doi":"10.29363/nanoge.matsusfall.2024.222","type":"conference","oa_version":"None","publisher":"Fundació de la comunitat valenciana SCITO","citation":{"mla":"Ibáñez, Maria, et al. “High-Performance Thermoelectric Cooler Fabricated Vith Extrusion-Based 3D Printing Materials.” Proceedings of the Materials for Sustainable Development Conference, 222, Fundació de la comunitat valenciana SCITO, 2024, doi:10.29363/nanoge.matsusfall.2024.222.","ama":"Ibáñez M, Xu S, Horta S, Lawal AQ. This technology is appealing because it can provide precise and localized cooling and heating without using hazardous liquids or gases commonly found in traditional vapor compression refrigeration. These devices are compact, customizable in size, work in any orientation, operate noiselessly, and require minimal maintenance. Even though thermoelectric coolers could be transformative for many advanced thermal management applications, their widespread adoption is hindered by the low efficiency of the thermoelectric materials and costly manufacturing processes.\r\n In this work, we use extrusion-based 3D printing techniques to fabricate high-performance thermoelectric materials using nanomaterial-based ink. The ink formulation is optimized to ensure structural integrity and particle interfacial bonding during annealing, providing p- and n-type materials with record-high zT values of 1.46 and 1.35 at room temperature, respectively. Moreover, we integrate the printed materials into a 32-pair device and achieve a significant cooling temperature gradient of 50 °C and a coefficient of performance of 3.8, comparable to best-performing thermoelectric coolers, avoiding material waste, and the energy-intense and inefficient steps, such as high-temperature synthesis, pressure-assisted sintering, and cutting and dicing ingots, commonly used in conventional manufacturing processes.","lang":"eng"}],"author":[{"full_name":"Ibáñez, Maria","last_name":"Ibáñez","first_name":"Maria","orcid":"0000-0001-5013-2843","id":"43C61214-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87"},{"full_name":"Xu, Shengduo","last_name":"Xu","first_name":"Shengduo","id":"12ab8624-4c8a-11ec-9e11-e1ac2438f22f"},{"full_name":"Horta, Sharona","id":"03a7e858-01b1-11ec-8b71-99ae6c4a05bc","first_name":"Sharona","last_name":"Horta"},{"full_name":"Lawal, Abayomi Q","first_name":"Abayomi Q","id":"5bdaf946-5355-11ee-ae5a-8061700bd605","last_name":"Lawal"}],"month":"11","_id":"18965","acknowledgement":"All authors acknowledge financial support from the Werner Siemens Foundation","day":"15","user_id":"2DF688A6-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","date_created":"2025-01-29T14:41:32Z","article_processing_charge":"No","corr_author":"1","language":[{"iso":"eng"}]},{"citation":{"mla":"Hoffmann, Charlotte, et al. “Practical Batch Proofs of Exponentiation.” Cryptology EPrint Archive, 2024/145, International Association for Cryptologic Research.","ama":"Hoffmann C, Hubáček P, Ivanova S. In applications such as distributed consensus, many PoEs are generated regularly, motivating\r\nprotocols for secure aggregation of batches of statements into a\r\nfew statements to improve the efficiency for both parties. Rotem\r\n(TCC 2021) recently presented two such generic batch PoEs.\r\nIn this work, we introduce two batch PoEs that outperform\r\nboth proposals of Rotem and we evaluate their practicality. First,\r\nwe show that the two batch PoEs of Rotem can be combined to\r\nimprove the overall efficiency by at least a factor of two. Second, we\r\nrevisit the work of Bellare, Garay, and Rabin (EUROCRYPT 1998)\r\non batch verification of digital signatures and show that, under the\r\nlow order assumption, their bucket test can be securely adapted to\r\nthe setting of groups of unknown order. The resulting batch PoE\r\nquickly outperforms the state of the art in the expected number of\r\ngroup multiplications with the growing number of instances, and it\r\ndecreases the cost of batching by an order of magnitude already for\r\nhundreds of thousands of instances. Importantly, it is the first batch\r\nPoE that significantly decreases both the proof size and complexity\r\nof verification. Our experimental evaluations show that even a nonoptimized implementation achieves such improvements, which\r\nwould match the demands of real-life systems requiring large-scale\r\nPoE processing.\r\nFinally, even though our proof techniques are conceptually similar to Rotem, we give an improved analysis of the application of the\r\nlow order assumption towards secure batching of PoE instances,\r\nresulting in a tight reduction, which is important when setting the\r\nsecurity parameter in practice."}],"year":"2024","das_tickbox":"1","date_updated":"2026-07-06T13:15:28Z","publication":"Cryptology ePrint Archive","title":"Practical batch proofs of exponentiation","publisher":"International Association for Cryptologic Research","cryptoeprintid":1,"type":"preprint","publication_status":"draft","department":[{"_id":"KrPi"}],"corr_author":"1","article_processing_charge":"No","related_material":{"record":[{"id":"20920","status":"public","relation":"dissertation_contains"},{"relation":"dissertation_contains","status":"public","id":"20556"}]},"date_created":"2025-11-27T10:13:38Z","acknowledgement":"Pavel Hubáček was supported by the Institute of Mathematics, Czech Academy of Sciences (RVO 67985840).","_id":"20701","author":[{"full_name":"Hoffmann, Charlotte","last_name":"Hoffmann","id":"0f78d746-dc7d-11ea-9b2f-83f92091afe7","orcid":"0000-0003-2027-5549","first_name":"Charlotte"},{"last_name":"Hubáček","first_name":"Pavel","full_name":"Hubáček, Pavel"},{"first_name":"Svetlana","last_name":"Ivanova","full_name":"Ivanova, Svetlana"}],"OA_type":"green","tmp":{"name":"Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International Public License (CC-BY 4.0)","image":"/images/cc_by.png","legal_code_url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/legalcode","short":"CC BY (4.0)"},"external_id":{"cryptoeprintid":["2024/145"]},"date_published":"2024-02-02T00:00:00Z"},{"publication":"Journal of Differential Geometry","date_updated":"2026-07-06T13:37:38Z","das_tickbox":"1","year":"2024","isi":1,"abstract":[{"text":"The Gibbons-Hawking ansatz provides a large family of circle-invariant hyperkähler 4-manifolds, and thus Calabi-Yau 2-folds. To this end, we propose a novel selfish mining attack that aims to maximize this objective and formally model the attack as a Markov decision process (MDP). We then present a formal analysis procedure which computes an ϵ-tight lower bound on the optimal expected relative revenue in the MDP and a strategy that achieves this ϵ-tight lower bound, where ϵ > 0 may be any specified precision. Our analysis is fully automated and provides formal guarantees on the correctness. We evaluate our selfish mining attack and observe that it achieves superior expected relative revenue compared to two considered baselines.\r\nIn concurrent work [Sarenche FC'24] does an automated analysis on selfish mining in predictable longest-chain blockchains based on efficient proof systems. History-deterministic (HD) automata are those in which nondeterminism can be resolved on the fly, based on the run constructed thus far. History-determinism is a robust property that admits different game-based characterisations, and HD specifications allow for game-based verification without an expensive determinization step. We show that the class of timed ω\r\n-languages recognized by HD timed automata strictly extends that of deterministic ones, and is strictly included in those recognised by fully non-deterministic TA. For non-deterministic timed automata it is known that universality is already undecidable for safety/reachability TA. For history-deterministic TA with arbitrary parity acceptance, we show that timed universality, inclusion, and synthesis all remain decidable and are EXPTIME-complete. For the subclass of TA with safety or reachability acceptance, one can decide (in EXPTIME) whether such an automaton is history-deterministic. If so, it can effectively determinized without introducing new automaton states."}],"publication":"Logical Methods in Computer Science","date_updated":"2026-07-07T13:37:45Z","DOAJ_listed":"1","ddc":["000"],"citation":{"chicago":"Bose, Sougata, Thomas A Henzinger, Karoliina Lehtinen, Sven Schewe, and Patrick Totzke. “History-Deterministic Timed Automata.” Logical Methods in Computer Science.
