It is known that strong solutions to such systems of PDEs may blow-up in finite time. Moreover, for many systems of practical interest, establishing whether the blow-up occurs or not is an open question. Here we prove that a suitable multiplicative noise of transport type has a regularizing effect. More precisely, for both a sufficiently noise intensity and a high spectrum, the blow-up of strong solutions is delayed up to an arbitrary large time. Global existence is shown for the case of exponentially decreasing mass. The proofs combine and extend recent developments in regularization by noise and in the Lp(Lq)-approach to stochastic PDEs, highlighting new connections between the two areas."}]},{"oa":1,"corr_author":"1","day":"01","publisher":"Springer Nature","department":[{"_id":"JuFi"}],"month":"10","external_id":{"isi":["001136206200002"],"arxiv":["2303.00353"]},"isi":1,"researchdata_availability":"no","doi":"10.1007/s00440-023-01254-0","file":[{"access_level":"open_access","creator":"dernst","relation":"main_file","success":1,"checksum":"34f44cad6a210ff66791ee37e590af2c","date_created":"2025-01-09T08:10:54Z","content_type":"application/pdf","date_updated":"2025-01-09T08:10:54Z","file_name":"2024_ProbTheoryRelatFields_Clozeau.pdf","file_size":880117,"file_id":"18788"}],"volume":190,"tmp":{"image":"/images/cc_by.png","legal_code_url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/legalcode","short":"CC BY (4.0)","name":"Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International Public License (CC-BY 4.0)"},"ddc":["510"],"intvolume":" 190","publication_status":"published","year":"2024","quality_controlled":"1","article_processing_charge":"Yes (in subscription journal)","has_accepted_license":"1","date_published":"2024-10-01T00:00:00Z","file_date_updated":"2025-01-09T08:10:54Z","arxiv":1,"das_tickbox":"0","fulldoi":"https://doi.org/10.1007/s00440-023-01254-0","scopus_import":"1","publication":"Probability Theory and Related Fields","ec_funded":1,"acknowledgement":"NC has received funding from the European Research Council (ERC) under the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme (Grant agreement No 948819).\r\nFM is supported by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation) through the SPP 2265 Random Geometric Systems. For well-prepared initial data and sufficiently small times, we rigorously prove convergence to the classical two-phase Navier-Stokes system with surface tension. The idea of the proof is to use asymptotic expansions to construct an approximate solution and to estimate the difference of the exact and approximate solutions with a spectral estimate for the (at the approximate solution) linearized Allen-Cahn operator. In the calculations we use a fractional order ansatz and new ansatz terms in higher orders leading to a suitable ε-scaled and coupled model problem. In its sharp-interface limit, the vectorial Allen–Cahn equation with a potential with N≥3 distinct minima has been conjectured to describe the evolution of branched interfaces by multiphase mean curvature flow. In the present work, we give a rigorous proof for this statement in two and three ambient dimensions and for a suitable class of potentials: as long as a strong solution to multiphase mean curvature flow exists, solutions to the vectorial Allen–Cahn equation with well-prepared initial data converge towards multiphase mean curvature flow in the limit of vanishing interface width parameter ε↘0. We even establish the rate of convergence O(ε \r\n1/2\r\n ). Our approach is based on the gradient-flow structure of the Allen–Cahn equation and its limiting motion: building on the recent concept of “gradient-flow calibrations” for multiphase mean curvature flow, we introduce a notion of relative entropy for the vectorial Allen–Cahn equation with multi-well potential. This enables us to overcome the limitations of other approaches, e.g. avoiding the need for a stability analysis of the Allen–Cahn operator or additional convergence hypotheses for the energy at positive times."}],"article_type":"original","oa_version":"Published Version","type":"journal_article","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"issue":"5","scopus_import":"1","publication":"Annales de l'Institut Henri Poincaré C","ec_funded":1,"acknowledgement":"The authors thank Sebastian Hensel for useful and helpful commentson the first draft of this work.\r\nThis project has received funding from the European Research Council (ERC)\r\nunder the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme (grant\r\nagreement no. 948819.","publication_identifier":{"eissn":["1873-1430"],"issn":["0294-1449"]},"article_processing_charge":"Yes","file_date_updated":"2024-09-09T07:46:42Z","date_published":"2024-01-24T00:00:00Z","has_accepted_license":"1","fulldoi":"https://doi.org/10.4171/AIHPC/109","das_tickbox":"0","tmp":{"image":"/images/cc_by.png","legal_code_url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/legalcode","short":"CC BY (4.0)","name":"Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International Public License (CC-BY 4.0)"},"ddc":["510"],"intvolume":" 41","quality_controlled":"1","year":"2024","publication_status":"published","isi":1,"file":[{"file_size":1348896,"date_updated":"2024-09-09T07:46:42Z","content_type":"application/pdf","file_name":"2024_AnnInstHPoincare_Fischer.pdf","file_id":"17923","relation":"main_file","creator":"dernst","access_level":"open_access","date_created":"2024-09-09T07:46:42Z","checksum":"b5ad02d9abd5b4701269cd1ad0a1cc8f","success":1}],"doi":"10.4171/AIHPC/109","researchdata_availability":"no","volume":41,"oa":1,"corr_author":"1","day":"24","month":"01","department":[{"_id":"JuFi"}],"publisher":"EMS Press","external_id":{"isi":["001293853900003"]}},{"project":[{"_id":"0599E47C-7A3F-11EA-A408-12923DDC885E","call_identifier":"H2020","name":"Formal Methods for Stochastic Models: Algorithms and Applications","grant_number":"863818"}],"citation":{"ista":"Asadi A, Chatterjee K, Svoboda J, Saona Urmeneta RJ. 2024. The vertices of the graph are partitioned between player 1 and player 2. Plays are infinite walks on the graph where the next vertex is decided by a player that owns the current vertex. Each edge is assigned an integer weight and the payoff of a play is the discounted-sum of the weights of the play. The goal of player 1 is to maximize the discounted-sum payoff against the adversarial player 2. These games lie in NP ∩ coNP and are among the rare combinatorial problems that belong to this complexity class and the existence of a polynomial-time algorithm is a major open question. Since breaking the general exponential barrier has been a challenging problem, faster parameterized algorithms have been considered. If the discount factor is expressed in unary, then discounted-sum games can be solved in polynomial time. However, if the discount factor is arbitrary (or expressed in binary), but the weights are in unary, none of the existing approaches yield a sub-exponential bound. Our main result is a new analysis technique for a classical algorithm (namely, the strategy iteration algorithm) that present a new runtime bound which is [EQUATION] for game graphs with n vertices and absolute weights of at most W. In particular, our result yields a deterministic sub-exponential bound for games with weights that are constant or represented in unary."}],"language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"publication":"39th Annual ACM/IEEE Symposium on Logic in Computer Science","scopus_import":"1","ec_funded":1,"publication_identifier":{"isbn":["9798400706608"],"eissn":["1043-6871"]},"acknowledgement":"This research was partially supported by the ERC CoG 863818 (ForM-SMArt) grant.\r\n","date_published":"2024-07-08T00:00:00Z","conference":{"name":"LICS: Logic in Computer Science","start_date":"2024-07-08","end_date":"2024-07-11","location":"Tallinn, Estonia"},"article_processing_charge":"No","fulldoi":"https://doi.org/10.1145/3661814.3662080","das_tickbox":"0","arxiv":1,"main_file_link":[{"open_access":"1","url":"https://doi.org/10.48550/arXiv.2405.02479"}],"quality_controlled":"1","year":"2024","publication_status":"published","article_number":"6","isi":1,"researchdata_availability":"no","doi":"10.1145/3661814.3662080","day":"08","oa":1,"corr_author":"1","external_id":{"isi":["001275042100006"],"arxiv":["2405.02479"]},"department":[{"_id":"KrCh"}],"month":"07","publisher":"Association for Computing Machinery"},{"acknowledgement":"The authors thank Razvan Pascanu, Mahdi Nikdan and Soroush Tabesh for their valuable feedback, the IT department from Institute of Science and Technology Austria for the hardware support and Weights and Biases for the infrastructure to track all our experiments. This quantity, known as the magnetotropic susceptibility, 𝑘, relates to the second derivative of the free energy with respect to the angle of rotation. We have used approximation-free, auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo simulations for a realistic model of 𝛼−RuCl3 and optimized the path integral to alleviate the negative sign problem. This allows us to reach temperatures down to 30K—an energy scale below the dominant Kitaev coupling. We demonstrate that the magnetotropic spin susceptibility in this model of 𝛼−RuCl3 displays scaling behavior 𝑘=𝑇⁢𝑓⁡(𝐵/𝑇) at high temperatures. Once the uniform susceptibility departs from the Curie law (i.e., at the energy scale of the exchange interactions), it appears to transition to an emergent scalinglike behavior, characterized by a different function 𝑓 at lower temperatures, stemming from the locality of torque fluctuations. We observe a remarkable numerical match between experiment and simulations and we also find qualitative agreement with the pure Kitaev model. In comparison, for the XXZ Heisenberg Hamiltonian, the scaling 𝑘=𝑇⁢𝑓⁡(𝐵/𝑇) breaks down at a temperature scale where the uniform spin susceptibility deviates from the Curie law and never reemerges at low temperatures.","lang":"eng"}],"article_type":"letter_note","oa_version":"Preprint","type":"journal_article"},{"_id":"19511","title":"QuaRot: Outlier-free 4-bit inference in rotated LLMs","status":"public","date_created":"2025-04-06T22:01:32Z","author":[{"last_name":"Ashkboos","first_name":"Saleh","full_name":"Ashkboos, Saleh"},{"full_name":"Mohtashami, Amirkeivan","last_name":"Mohtashami","first_name":"Amirkeivan"},{"full_name":"Croci, Maximilian L.","first_name":"Maximilian L.","last_name":"Croci"},{"first_name":"Bo","last_name":"Li","full_name":"Li, Bo"},{"full_name":"Cameron, Pashmina","last_name":"Cameron","first_name":"Pashmina"},{"full_name":"Jaggi, Martin","first_name":"Martin","last_name":"Jaggi"},{"last_name":"Alistarh","first_name":"Dan-Adrian","id":"4A899BFC-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","orcid":"0000-0003-3650-940X","full_name":"Alistarh, Dan-Adrian"},{"last_name":"Hoefler","first_name":"Torsten","full_name":"Hoefler, Torsten"},{"last_name":"Hensman","first_name":"James","full_name":"Hensman, James"}],"oa_version":"Preprint","type":"conference","abstract":[{"lang":"eng","text":"We introduce QuaRot, a new Quantization scheme based on Rotations, which is able to quantize LLMs end-to-end, including all weights, activations, and KV cache in 4 bits. In this work, we describe the phosphide Ce6Ni6P17, where the Ce+3 ions accommodate in a body-centered cubic lattice of Ce6 regular octahedra. From measurements of magnetization, specific heat, and resistivity, we determine a rich phase diagram as a function of temperature and magnetic field in which different magnetic phases are found. Besides clear evidence of magnetic frustration is obtained from entropy analysis. At zero field, a second-order antiferromagnetic transition occurs at TN1≈1 K followed by a first-order transition at TN2≈0.45 K. With magnetic field new magnetic phases appear, including a weakly first-order transition which ends in a classical critical point and a third magnetic phase. We also study the exact solution of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg model in an octahedron which allows us a qualitative understanding of the phase diagram and compare with the experimental results."}],"oa_version":"None","type":"journal_article","article_type":"original","date_created":"2024-02-18T23:01:01Z","status":"public","author":[{"full_name":"Franco, D. They have wide applications ranging from computer science to economics and biology. Yet, even though an agent’s payoff only depends on the actions of their direct neighbors in graphical games, computing the Nash equilibria and making statements about the convergence time of \"natural\" local dynamics in particular can be highly challenging. In this work, we present a novel approach for classifying complexity of Nash equilibria in graphical games by establishing a connection to local graph algorithms, a subfield of distributed computing. In particular, we make the observation that the equilibria of graphical games are equivalent to locally verifiable labelings (LVL) in graphs; vertex labelings which are verifiable with constant-round local algorithms. This connection allows us to derive novel lower bounds on the convergence time to equilibrium of best-response dynamics in graphical games. Since we establish that distributed convergence can sometimes be provably slow, we also introduce and give bounds on an intuitive notion of \"time-constrained\" inefficiency of best responses. We exemplify how our results can be used in the implementation of mechanisms that ensure convergence of best responses to a Nash equilibrium. Our results thus also give insight into the convergence of strategy-proof algorithms for graphical games, which is still not well understood.","lang":"eng"}],"project":[{"grant_number":"863818","name":"Formal Methods for Stochastic Models: Algorithms and Applications","call_identifier":"H2020","_id":"0599E47C-7A3F-11EA-A408-12923DDC885E"}],"citation":{"ieee":"J. In this work, we consider two classical quantitative problems in cost analysis for probabilistic programs. The first problem is to find a bound on the expected total cost of the program. This is a natural measure for the resource usage of the program and can also be directly applied to average-case runtime analysis. The second problem asks for a tail bound, i.e. ‍given a threshold t the goal is to find a probability bound p such that ℙ[total cost ≥ t] ≤ p. Intuitively, given a threshold t on the resource, the problem is to find the likelihood that the total cost exceeds this threshold.\r\nFirst, for expectation bounds, a major obstacle in previous works on cost analysis is that they can handle only non-negative costs or bounded variable updates. In contrast, we provide a new variant of the standard notion of cost martingales, that allows us to find expectation bounds for a class of programs with general positive or negative costs and no restriction on the variable updates. More specifically, our approach is applicable as long as there is a lower bound on the total cost incurred along every path.\r\nSecond, for tail bounds, all previous methods are limited to programs in which the expected total cost is finite. In contrast, we present a novel approach, based on a combination of our martingale-based method for expectation bounds with a quantitative safety analysis, to obtain a solution to the tail bound problem that is applicable even to programs with infinite expected cost. Specifically, this allows us to obtain runtime tail bounds for programs that do not terminate almost-surely.\r\nIn summary, we provide a novel combination of martingale-based cost analysis and quantitative safety analysis that is able to find expectation and tail cost bounds for probabilistic programs, without the restrictions of non-negative costs, bounded updates, or finiteness of the expected total cost. Finally, we provide experimental results showcasing that our approach can solve instances that were beyond the reach of previous methods.","lang":"eng"}],"_id":"17162","title":"Quantitative bounds on resource usage of probabilistic programs","author":[{"full_name":"Chatterjee, Krishnendu","orcid":"0000-0002-4561-241X","first_name":"Krishnendu","last_name":"Chatterjee","id":"2E5DCA20-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87"},{"last_name":"Goharshady","first_name":"Amir Kafshdar","id":"391365CE-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","full_name":"Goharshady, Amir Kafshdar","orcid":"0000-0003-1702-6584"},{"last_name":"Meggendorfer","first_name":"Tobias","id":"b21b0c15-30a2-11eb-80dc-f13ca25802e1","orcid":"0000-0002-1712-2165","full_name":"Meggendorfer, Tobias"},{"orcid":"0000-0002-4681-1699","full_name":"Zikelic, Dorde","id":"294AA7A6-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","last_name":"Zikelic","first_name":"Dorde"}],"status":"public","date_created":"2024-06-23T22:01:02Z","volume":8,"file":[{"file_id":"17182","file_size":413096,"content_type":"application/pdf","date_updated":"2024-06-27T07:48:16Z","file_name":"2024_ProcACMProgLanguage_Chatterjee.pdf","date_created":"2024-06-27T07:48:16Z","checksum":"9243ded966f71df1572be5466019be5c","success":1,"creator":"dernst","relation":"main_file","access_level":"open_access"}],"doi":"10.1145/3649824","researchdata_availability":"yes","article_number":"107","department":[{"_id":"KrCh"}],"month":"04","publisher":"Association for Computing Machinery","day":"29","dataavailabilitystatement":"The software that supports Section 8 is available on Zenodo [Meggendorfer and Žikelić 2024]. https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.10457566","oa":1,"fulldoi":"https://doi.org/10.1145/3649824","das_tickbox":"1","date_published":"2024-04-29T00:00:00Z","file_date_updated":"2024-06-27T07:48:16Z","has_accepted_license":"1","article_processing_charge":"Yes (in subscription journal)","year":"2024","quality_controlled":"1","publication_status":"published","intvolume":" 8","tmp":{"image":"/images/cc_by.png","legal_code_url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/legalcode","short":"CC BY (4.0)","name":"Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International Public License (CC-BY 4.0)"},"ddc":["000"]},{"citation":{"short":"J.D. For a stream of length T and privacy without expiration\r\ncontinual counting is possible with maximum (over all time steps) additive error\r\nO(log2\r\n(T)/ε) and the best known lower bound is Ω(log(T)/ε); closing this gap\r\nis a challenging open problem.\r\nWe show that the situation is very different for privacy with gradual expiration by\r\ngiving upper and lower bounds for a large set of expiration functions g. Specifically,\r\nour algorithm achieves an additive error of O(log(T)/ε) for a large set of privacy\r\nexpiration functions. We also give a lower bound that shows that if C is the additive\r\nerror of any ε-DP algorithm for this problem, then the product of C and the privacy\r\nexpiration function after 2C steps must be Ω(log(T)/ε). Our algorithm matches\r\nthis lower bound as its additive error is O(log(T)/ε), even when g(2C) = O(1).\r\nOur empirical evaluation shows that we achieve a slowly growing privacy loss\r\nwith significantly smaller empirical privacy loss for large values of d than a natural\r\nbaseline algorithm."}],"OA_place":"repository","OA_type":"green","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"publication":"38th Conference on Neural Information Processing Systems","scopus_import":"1","acknowledgement":"Monika Henzinger: This project has received funding from the European Research Council (ERC) under the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme (Grant agreement No. 101019564) and the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) grant DOI 10.55776/Z422, grant DOI 10.55776/I5982, and grant DOI 10.55776/P33775 with additional funding from the netidee SCIENCE Stiftung, 2020–2024.
