In this study, we employ particle swarm optimization method and density functional theory to explore the H2O2 synthesis mechanism on Pd, PdO, and the partially oxidized surface (Pd9OX). A comprehensive mechanism for Pd9OX is elucidated, and subsequent coverage-dependent kinetic analysis allows for a quantitative assessment of catalytic performance at the interphase. Our findings conclusively establish that the interphase between Pd and PdO represents the optimal active site. Phase diagram analysis further aids in determining stable structures under reaction conditions. At 298.15 K and under oxygen balance, the Pd9O6 surface remains stable throughout the reaction, demonstrating high activity and selectivity. This work underscores the significance of the interphase in comprehending catalytic performance and unveils promising avenues for optimizing catalyst performance by controlling reaction conditions and surface composition."}],"publisher":"Elsevier","acknowledgement":"The authors acknowledge the financial support from the National Key Research and Development Project of China (2021YFA1500900, 2022YFE0113800), the National Natural Science Foundation of China (22141001, U21A20298), Zhejiang Innovation Team (2017R5203).","external_id":{"isi":["001236643300001"]},"publication":"Chemical Engineering Science","oa":1,"article_processing_charge":"No","month":"08","type":"journal_article","article_type":"original","dataavailabilitystatement":"No data was used for the research described in the article.","supplementarymaterial":"yes","user_id":"317138e5-6ab7-11ef-aa6d-ffef3953e345","fulldoi":"https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ces.2024.120199","year":"2024"},{"degree_awarded":"PhD","status":"public","citation":{"apa":"Satapathy, R. These behaviours require control mechanisms that can extract information from the environment, particularly visual cues. Selective evolutionary pressures have thus refined such visuomotor transformations in a species-specific manner to meet the specific ecological and ethological challenges of each organism. However, a common challenge across organisms as visual information processing\r\nbecomes increasingly detailed is the mechanisms required to synthesise disparate pieces of information into a coherent percept or unified picture of the world. In this thesis, I investigate how disparate visual information is combined in the brain of Drosophila melanogaster to effectively guide locomotion.\r\nFor this, I first designed and built a behavioural setup to record locomotion and present visual stimuli to freely-walking fruit flies in a closed-loop manner. This setup allowed the investigation of innate visually-guided behaviours, including the optomotor reflex and courtship.\r\nSecond, taking advantage of my system I investigated the optomotor response, a reflexive visual stabilisation behaviour in which flies turn in the direction of global motion to minimise retinal slip. This behaviour is thought to be mediated by Lobula plate tangential cells (LPTCs); a complex network of optic-flow-sensitive neurons essential for self-motion estimation. Using a novel genetic mutant, I demonstrate that electrical coupling between two LPTC subtypes, contralateral HS and H2 neurons, regulates the balance between smooth optomotor turning and saccadic anti-optomotor responses. These findings underscore the critical role of binocular motion cue integration in guiding course control. Finally, I developed a novel behavioural paradigm in which a sexually aroused male fruit fly is presented with an optomotor distractor. This setup creates competition between two visual behaviours, courtship tracking and the optomotor response, enabling me to explore how the visual system resolves this conflict. In this setting, males\r\nengaged in courtship selectively suppress their optomotor response based on the female's location. Furthermore, when this experiment is replicated with an “artificial female”, optogenetically aroused males alternate between tracking and optomotor responses. The probability and dynamics of this switching are determined by the relative strengths of the two competing stimuli. In summary, the results presented in this thesis explore two mechanisms – integration and competition - through which visual information is combined in the brain of the fruit fly to drive locomotion."}],"publication_identifier":{"issn":["2663-337X"],"isbn":["978-3-99078-047-3"]},"publisher":"Institute of Science and Technology Austria","corr_author":"1","has_accepted_license":"1","ddc":["573"],"acknowledgement":"I am incredibly thankful for the outstanding support provided by ISTA, especially the Machine Shop team, who made conducting research much easier and more efficient. However, the library of RT high-performance materials is limited. Traditional high-temperature synthetic methods constrain the range of materials achievable, hindering the ability to surpass crystal structure limitations and engineer defects. Here, a solution-based synthetic approach is introduced, enabling RT synthesis of powders and exploration of densification at lower temperatures to influence the material's microstructure. The approach is exemplified by Ag2Se, an n-type alternative to bismuth telluride. It is demonstrated that the concentration of Ag interstitials, grain boundaries, and dislocations are directly correlated to the sintering temperature, and achieve a figure of merit of 1.1 from RT to 100 °C after optimization. Moreover, insights into and resolve Ag2Se's challenges are provided, including stoichiometry issues leading to irreproducible performances. These actions depend on global visual motion cues known as optic-flow. While the optomotor response has been the traditional focus for studying optic-flow compensation in insects, its simplicity has been insufficient to determine the role of the intricate optic-flow processing network involved in visual course control. Here, we reveal a series of course control behaviours in Drosophila and link them to specific neural circuits. We show that bilateral electrical coupling of optic-flow-sensitive neurons in the fly’s lobula plate are required for a proper course control. This electrical interaction works alongside chemical synapses within the HS-H2 network to control the dynamics and direction of turning behaviours. Our findings reveal how insects use bilateral motion cues for navigation, assigning a new functional significance to the HS-H2 network and suggesting a previously unknown role for gap junctions in non-linear operations."}],"publication_identifier":{"eissn":["2041-1723"]},"volume":15,"day":"12","has_accepted_license":"1","ddc":["570"],"acknowledgement":"We thank Georg Ammer and Alexander Borst for sharing anti-ShakB serum antibodies. Connectivity analysis showed that SpL receives input from globus pallidus (GP), and the intrapeduncular nucleus (INP) located ventromedial to GP, whose neurons express numerous striatal markers. SpL-projecting GP neurons were large and aspiny, while SpL-projecting INP neurons were medium sized and spiny. Connectivity analysis further showed that SpL receives inputs from subthalamic nucleus (STN) and substantia nigra pars reticulata (SNr), and that the SNr also receives inputs from GP, INP, and STN. Neurochemical analysis showed that SpL neurons express ENK, GAD, and a variety of pallidal neuron markers, and receive GABAergic terminals, some of which also contain DARPP32, consistent with GP pallidal and INP striatal inputs. Connectivity and neurochemical analysis showed that the SpL input to tectum prominently ends on GABAA receptor-enriched tectobulbar neurons. Behavioral studies showed that lesions of SpL impair visuomotor behaviors involving tracking and pecking moving targets. Our results suggest that SpL modulates brainstem-projecting tectobulbar neurons in a manner comparable to the demonstrated influence of GP internus on motor thalamus and of SNr on tectobulbar neurons in mammals. Given published data in amphibians and reptiles, it seems likely the SpL circuit represents a major direct pathway-type circuit by which the basal ganglia exerts its motor influence in nonmammalian tetrapods. The present studies also show that avian striatum is divided into three spatially segregated territories with differing connectivity, a medial striato-nigral territory, a dorsolateral striato-GP territory, and the ventrolateral INP motor territory."}],"scopus_import":"1","publisher":"Wiley","acknowledgement":"We gratefully thank Marion Joni, Tony Laverghetta, Sherry Cuthbertson, Gary Henderson, and Patricia Lindaman for technical assistance. This technology is appealing because it can provide precise and localized cooling and heating without using hazardous liquids or gases commonly found in traditional vapor compression refrigeration. These devices are compact, customizable in size, work in any orientation, operate noiselessly, and require minimal maintenance. Even though thermoelectric coolers could be transformative for many advanced thermal management applications, their widespread adoption is hindered by the low efficiency of the thermoelectric materials and costly manufacturing processes.\r\n In this work, we use extrusion-based 3D printing techniques to fabricate high-performance thermoelectric materials using nanomaterial-based ink. The ink formulation is optimized to ensure structural integrity and particle interfacial bonding during annealing, providing p- and n-type materials with record-high zT values of 1.46 and 1.35 at room temperature, respectively. Moreover, we integrate the printed materials into a 32-pair device and achieve a significant cooling temperature gradient of 50 °C and a coefficient of performance of 3.8, comparable to best-performing thermoelectric coolers, avoiding material waste, and the energy-intense and inefficient steps, such as high-temperature synthesis, pressure-assisted sintering, and cutting and dicing ingots, commonly used in conventional manufacturing processes."}],"corr_author":"1","publisher":"Fundació de la comunitat valenciana SCITO","acknowledgement":"All authors acknowledge financial support from the Werner Siemens Foundation","publication":"Proceedings of the Materials for Sustainable Development Conference","article_processing_charge":"No","month":"11"},{"quality_controlled":"1","article_number":"113962","date_updated":"2026-10-16T10:12:00Z","_id":"15163","intvolume":" 347","date_created":"2024-03-24T23:00:58Z","researchdata_availability":"not applicable","status":"public","main_file_link":[{"url":"https://doi.org/10.48550/arXiv.2301.11615","open_access":"1"}],"department":[{"_id":"MaKw"}],"citation":{"short":"R. Maximum magnetization decreases while the coercivity first increases and then decreases with Bi is correlated to the competing effect between the local deformation and Cr–O–Cr exchange interaction. The magnetodielectric coupling with improved permittivity might be associated with the 6s2 lone pair electron of Bi3+. The famous Edwards-Erdős bound states that any connected graph on n vertices with m edges contains a cut of size at least m/2+(n-1)/4. Crowston, Jones and Mnich [Algorithmica, 2015] showed that the MaxCut problem on simple connected graphs admits an FPT algorithm, where the parameter k is the difference between the desired cut size c and the lower bound given by the Edwards-Erdős bound. This was later improved by Etscheid and Mnich [Algorithmica, 2017] to run in parameterized linear time, i.e., f(k)⋅ O(m). We improve upon this result in two ways: Firstly, we extend the algorithm to work also for multigraphs (alternatively, graphs with positive integer weights). Secondly, we change the parameter; instead of the difference to the Edwards-Erdős bound, we use the difference to the Poljak-Turzík bound. The Poljak-Turzík bound states that any weighted graph G has a cut of size at least (w(G))/2+(w_MSF(G))/4, where w(G) denotes the total weight of G, and w_MSF(G) denotes the weight of its minimum spanning forest. In connected simple graphs the two bounds are equivalent, but for multigraphs the Poljak-Turzík bound can be larger and thus yield a smaller parameter k. Our algorithm also runs in parameterized linear time, i.e., f(k)⋅ O(m+n).","lang":"eng"}],"corr_author":"1","publisher":"Schloss Dagstuhl - Leibniz-Zentrum für Informatik","acknowledgement":"Kalina Petrova: Swiss National Science Foundation, grant no. For example, the majority colouring conjecture of Kreutzer, Oum, Seymour, van der Zypen and Wood states that every directed graph has a 3-colouring such that for every vertex v, at most half of the out-neighbours of v have the same colour as \r\n. As another example, the internal partition conjecture, due to DeVos and to Ban and Linial, states that for every d, all but finitely many d-regular graphs have a partition into two non-empty parts such that for every vertex v, at least half of the neighbours of v lie in the same part as v. We prove several results in this spirit: in particular, two of our results are that the majority colouring conjecture holds for Erdős–Rényi random directed graphs (of any density), and that the internal partition conjecture holds if we permit a tiny number of ‘exceptional vertices’. Our proofs involve a variety of techniques, including several different methods to analyse random recolouring processes. One highlight is a personality-changing scheme: we ‘forget’ certain information based on the state of a Markov chain, giving us more independence to work with.","lang":"eng"}],"publication_identifier":{"eissn":["1469-7750"],"issn":["0024-6107"]},"corr_author":"1","publisher":"Wiley","has_accepted_license":"1","ddc":["510"],"acknowledgement":"We are grateful to the anonymous referees for their thorough reading of the paper, and for many suggestions which have improved the exposition throughout.\r\n\r\nMichael Anastos was supported by the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie grant agreement No. 101034413. For both inequalities, given a graph G, one needs to make a judicious choice of weighted adjacency matrix to obtain as strong a bound as possible.\r\nWhile there is a well-established theory surrounding the ratio bound, the inertia bound is much more mysterious, and its limits are rather unclear. In fact, only recently did Sinkovic find the first example of a graph for which the inertia bound is not tight (for any weighted adjacency matrix), answering a longstanding question of Godsil. We show that the inertia bound can be extremely far from tight, and in fact can significantly underperform the ratio bound: for example, one of our results is that for infinitely many n, there is an n-vertex graph for which even the unweighted ratio bound can prove α(G)≤4n3/4, but the inertia bound is always at least n/4. In particular, these results address questions of Rooney, Sinkovic, and Wocjan--Elphick--Abiad.","lang":"eng"}],"scopus_import":"1"},{"das_tickbox":"0","file_date_updated":"2024-12-16T07:33:34Z","title":"Climbing up a random subgraph of the hypercube","isi":1,"doi":"10.1214/24-ECP639","publication_status":"published","author":[{"first_name":"Michael","id":"0b2a4358-bb35-11ec-b7b9-e3279b593dbb","last_name":"Anastos","full_name":"Anastos, Michael"},{"first_name":"Sahar","last_name":"Diskin","full_name":"Diskin, Sahar"},{"full_name":"Elboim, Dor","last_name":"Elboim","first_name":"Dor"},{"full_name":"Krivelevich, Michael","first_name":"Michael","last_name":"Krivelevich"}],"file":[{"file_name":"2024_ElectrCommProbability_Anastos.pdf","file_id":"18657","access_level":"open_access","content_type":"application/pdf","file_size":530169,"date_created":"2024-12-16T07:33:34Z","success":1,"creator":"dernst","checksum":"307a9d049325e6ca9bfe8b4a1f275983","date_updated":"2024-12-16T07:33:34Z","relation":"main_file"}],"date_published":"2024-11-24T00:00:00Z","OA_type":"gold","intvolume":" 29","date_created":"2024-12-15T23:01:51Z","researchdata_availability":"no","quality_controlled":"1","article_number":"70","_id":"18655","tmp":{"name":"Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International Public License (CC-BY 4.0)","legal_code_url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/legalcode","image":"/images/cc_by.png","short":"CC BY (4.0)"},"date_updated":"2026-10-16T10:13:13Z","department":[{"_id":"MaKw"}],"main_file_link":[{"url":"https://doi.org/10.48550/arXiv.2311.16631","open_access":"1"}],"citation":{"apa":"Anastos, M., Diskin, S., Elboim, D., & Krivelevich, M. These consist of successively switching the dimers along alternating cycles of prescribed (small) lengths. We study the connectivity properties of the dimer configuration space equipped with these transitions. Answering a question of Freire, Klivans, Milet, and Saldanha, we show that in three dimensions any configuration admits an alternating cycle of length at most 6. We further establish that any configuration on [n] d features order n d−2 alternating cycles of length at most 4d−2. We also prove that the dynamics of dimer configurations on the unit hypercube of dimension d is ergodic when switching alternating cycles of length at most 4d−4. Finally, in the planar but non-bipartite case, we show that parallelogram-shaped boxes in the triangular lattice are ergodic for switching alternating cycles of lengths 4 and 6 only, thus improving a result of Kenyon and Rémila, which also uses 8-cycles. Nevertheless, errors inevitably occur, and those that result in reading frame shifts are particularly consequential because the resulting polypeptides are typically nonfunctional. Despite the generally maladaptive impact of such errors, the proper decoding of certain mRNAs, including many viral mRNAs, depends on a process known as programmed ribosomal frameshifting. The fact that these programmed events, commonly involving a shift to the –1 frame, occur at specific evolutionarily optimized “slippery” sites has facilitated mechanistic investigation. By contrast, less is known about the scope and nature of error (i.e., nonprogrammed) frameshifting. Here, we examine error frameshifting by monitoring spontaneous frameshift events that suppress the effects of single base pair deletions affecting two unrelated test proteins. To map the precise sites of frameshifting, we developed a targeted mass spectrometry–based method called “translational tiling proteomics” for interrogating the full set of possible –1 slippage events that could produce the observed frameshift suppression. Surprisingly, such events occur at many sites along the transcripts, involving up to one half of the available codons. Only a subset of these resembled canonical “slippery” sites, implicating alternative mechanisms potentially involving noncognate mispairing events. Additionally, the aggregate frequency of these events (ranging from 1 to 10% in our test cases) was higher than we might have anticipated. Our findings point to an unexpected degree of mechanistic diversity among ribosomal frameshifting events and suggest that frameshifted products may contribute more significantly to the proteome than generally assumed.","lang":"eng"}],"day":"06","volume":121,"fulldoi":"https://doi.org/10.1073/pnas.2317453121","year":"2024","supplementarymaterial":"yes","issue":"6","user_id":"317138e5-6ab7-11ef-aa6d-ffef3953e345","dataavailabilitystatement":"Key plasmids developed in this work will be deposited with Addgene; all other plasmids developed in this work will be made available upon request with no restrictions. One of the evolutionary conserved key players is IRE1, which maintains endoplasmic reticulum (ER) homeostasis through the unfolded protein response (UPR). Upon accumulation of misfolded proteins in the ER, IRE1 forms clusters on the ER membrane to initiate UPR signaling. What regulates IRE1 cluster formation is not fully understood. Here, we show that the ER lumenal domain (LD) of human IRE1α forms biomolecular condensates in vitro. IRE1α LD condensates were stabilized both by binding to unfolded polypeptides as well as by tethering to model membranes, suggesting their role in assembling IRE1α into signaling-competent stable clusters. Molecular dynamics simulations indicated that weak multivalent interactions drive IRE1α LD clustering. Mutagenesis experiments identified disordered regions in IRE1α LD to control its clustering in vitro and in cells. Importantly, dysregulated clustering of IRE1α mutants led to defects in IRE1α signaling. Our results revealed that disordered regions in IRE1α LD control its clustering and suggest their role as a common strategy in regulating protein assembly on membranes.","lang":"eng"}],"scopus_import":"1","publisher":"Embo Press","acknowledgement":"We thank late Thomas Peterbauer at the Max Perutz Labs Biooptics Light Microscopy Facility for his help and support. The protein machine responsible for this process is the divisome, a transient assembly of more than 30 proteins in and on the surface of the cytoplasmic membrane. Together, they constrict the cell envelope and remodel the peptidoglycan layer to eventually split the cell into two. For Escherichia coli, most molecular players involved in this process have probably been identified, but obtaining the quantitative information needed for a mechanistic understanding can often not be achieved from experiments in vivo alone. Since the discovery of the Z-ring more than 30 years ago, in vitro reconstitution experiments have been crucial to shed light on molecular processes normally hidden in the complex environment of the living cell. In this review, we summarize how rebuilding the divisome from purified components – or at least parts of it - have been instrumental to obtain the detailed mechanistic understanding of the bacterial cell division machinery that we have today."}],"publication_identifier":{"issn":["0171-9335"]},"volume":103,"day":"01","month":"03","article_processing_charge":"Yes","oa":1,"external_id":{"pmid":["38218128"],"isi":["001166216800001"]},"publication":"European Journal of Cell Biology"},{"OA_type":"green","isi":1,"title":"The cost of maintaining keys in dynamic groups with applications to multicast encryption and group messaging","das_tickbox":"0","doi":"10.1007/978-3-031-78011-0_14","author":[{"full_name":"Anastos, Michael","id":"0b2a4358-bb35-11ec-b7b9-e3279b593dbb","last_name":"Anastos","first_name":"Michael"},{"orcid":"0000-0002-7553-6606","last_name":"Auerbach","id":"D33D2B18-E445-11E9-ABB7-15F4E5697425","first_name":"Benedikt","full_name":"Auerbach, Benedikt"},{"last_name":"Baig","id":"3EDE6DE4-AA5A-11E9-986D-341CE6697425","first_name":"Mirza Ahad","full_name":"Baig, Mirza Ahad"},{"last_name":"Cueto Noval","orcid":"0000-0002-2505-4246","id":"ffc563a3-f6e0-11ea-865d-e3cce03d17cc","first_name":"Miguel","full_name":"Cueto Noval, Miguel"},{"last_name":"Kwan","orcid":"0000-0002-4003-7567","id":"5fca0887-a1db-11eb-95d1-ca9d5e0453b3","first_name":"Matthew Alan","full_name":"Kwan, Matthew Alan"},{"full_name":"Pascual Perez, Guillermo","id":"2D7ABD02-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","orcid":"0000-0001-8630-415X","last_name":"Pascual Perez","first_name":"Guillermo"},{"full_name":"Pietrzak, Krzysztof Z","last_name":"Pietrzak","orcid":"0000-0002-9139-1654","id":"3E04A7AA-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","first_name":"Krzysztof Z"}],"publication_status":"published","date_published":"2024-12-02T00:00:00Z","page":"413-443","main_file_link":[{"url":"https://eprint.iacr.org/2024/1097","open_access":"1"}],"department":[{"_id":"MaKw"},{"_id":"KrPi"}],"citation":{"short":"M. Being “dynamic” means one can add and remove users from the group. This captures important protocols like multicast encryption (ME) and continuous group-key agreement (CGKA), which is the primitive underlying many group messaging applications. We prove our bounds in a combinatorial setting where the state of the protocol progresses in rounds. The state of the protocol in each round is captured by a set system, with each of its elements specifying a set of users who share a secret key. We show this combinatorial model implies bounds in symbolic models for ME and CGKA that capture, as building blocks, PRGs, PRFs, dual PRFs, secret sharing, and symmetric encryption in the setting of ME, and PRGs, PRFs, dual PRFs, secret sharing, public-key encryption, and key-updatable public-key encryption in the setting of CGKA. The models are related to the ones used by Micciancio and Panjwani (Eurocrypt’04) and Bienstock et al. (TCC’20) to analyze ME and CGKA, respectively. We prove – using the Bollobás’ Set Pairs Inequality – that the cost (number of uploaded ciphertexts) for replacing a set of d users in a group of size n is Ω(dln(n/d)). Our lower bound is asymptotically tight and both improves on a bound of Ω(d) by Bienstock et al. (TCC’20), and generalizes a result by Micciancio and Panjwani (Eurocrypt’04), who proved a lower bound of Ω(log(n)) for d=1. A striking conjecture in this area, due to van Dam and Haemers,\r\nis that ‘almost all graphs are determined by their spectrum’, meaning that the fraction of unlabelled n-vertex\r\ngraphs which are determined by their spectrum converges to 1 as n → ∞.\r\nIn this paper, we make a step towards this conjecture, showing that there are exponentially many n-vertex\r\ngraphs which are determined by their spectrum. This improves on previous bounds (of shape e\r\nc\r\n√\r\nn\r\n). We also\r\npropose a number of further directions of research.\r\n","lang":"eng"}],"scopus_import":"1","day":"19","volume":75,"month":"06","oa":1,"arxiv":1,"article_processing_charge":"Yes (via OA deal)","publication":"Quarterly Journal of Mathematics","external_id":{"isi":["001249741500001"],"arxiv":["2309.09788"]}}]
