Here we investigate the FtsZ-based cell division mechanism in Haloferax volcanii and find proteins containing photosynthetic reaction centre (PRC) barrel domains that play an essential role in archaeal cell division. We rename these proteins cell division protein B 1 (CdpB1) and CdpB2. Depletions and deletions in their respective genes cause severe cell division defects, generating drastically enlarged cells. Fluorescence microscopy of tagged FtsZ1, FtsZ2 and SepF in CdpB1 and CdpB2 mutant strains revealed an unusually disordered divisome that is not organized into a distinct ring-like structure. Biochemical analysis shows that SepF forms a tripartite complex with CdpB1/2 and crystal structures suggest that these two proteins might form filaments, possibly aligning SepF and the FtsZ2 ring during cell division. Overall our results indicate that PRC-domain proteins play essential roles in FtsZ-based cell division in Archaea."}],"dataavailabilitystatement":"The data that support the findings of this study are available in the Source Data. CME relies on the precise recruitment of regulators for vesicle maturation and release. Homologues of components of mammalian vesicle scission are strong candidates to be part of the scission machinery in plants, but the precise roles of these proteins in this process are not fully understood. Here, we characterised the roles of Plant Dynamin-Related Proteins 2 (DRP2s) and SH3-domain containing protein 2 (SH3P2), the plant homologue to Dynamins’ recruiters, like Endophilin and Amphiphysin, in the CME by combining high-resolution imaging of endocytic events in vivo and characterisation of the purified proteins in vitro. Although DRP2s and SH3P2 arrive similarly late during CME and physically interact, genetic analysis of the sh3p123 triple-mutant and complementation assays with non-SH3P2-interacting DRP2 variants suggests that SH3P2 does not directly recruit DRP2s to the site of endocytosis. These observations imply that despite the presence of many well-conserved endocytic components, plants have acquired a distinct mechanism for CME."}],"year":"2024","status":"public","title":"Role of dynamin-related proteins 2 and SH3P2 in clathrin-mediated endocytosis in Arabidopsis thaliana","corr_author":"1","isi":1,"month":"04","type":"journal_article","ec_funded":1,"external_id":{"isi":["001266917100005"],"pmid":["38506228"]},"publication_identifier":{"issn":["0021-9533"],"eissn":["1477-9137"]},"researchdata_availability":"no","doi":"10.1242/jcs.261720","date_published":"2024-04-01T00:00:00Z","oa_version":"Published Version","article_type":"original","pmid":1,"publisher":"The Company of Biologists","ddc":["570"],"file_date_updated":"2025-01-09T08:41:16Z","volume":137,"related_material":{"record":[{"status":"public","relation":"earlier_version","id":"14591"}]},"date_updated":"2026-10-16T10:38:13Z","user_id":"317138e5-6ab7-11ef-aa6d-ffef3953e345","date_created":"2024-04-19T09:54:59Z","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"issue":"8","intvolume":" 137","project":[{"grant_number":"665385","call_identifier":"H2020","_id":"2564DBCA-B435-11E9-9278-68D0E5697425","name":"International IST Doctoral Program"},{"grant_number":"I06123","_id":"bd76d395-d553-11ed-ba76-f678c14f9033","name":"Peptide receptors for auxin canalization in Arabidopsis"}],"fulldoi":"https://doi.org/10.1242/jcs.261720","article_number":"jcs.261720","oa":1,"scopus_import":"1","author":[{"orcid":"0000-0002-2198-0509","first_name":"Nataliia","id":"390C1120-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","full_name":"Gnyliukh, Nataliia","last_name":"Gnyliukh"},{"last_name":"Johnson","full_name":"Johnson, Alexander J","orcid":"0000-0002-2739-8843","id":"46A62C3A-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","first_name":"Alexander J"},{"first_name":"MK","full_name":"Nagel, MK","last_name":"Nagel"},{"full_name":"Monzer, Aline","last_name":"Monzer","first_name":"Aline","id":"2DB5D88C-D7B3-11E9-B8FD-7907E6697425"},{"first_name":"David","id":"db566d23-f6e0-11ea-865d-e6f270e968e7","full_name":"Babic, David","last_name":"Babic"},{"id":"36062FEC-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","first_name":"Annamaria","last_name":"Hlavata","full_name":"Hlavata, Annamaria"},{"first_name":"SS","full_name":"Alotaibi, SS","last_name":"Alotaibi"},{"full_name":"Isono, E","last_name":"Isono","first_name":"E"},{"last_name":"Loose","full_name":"Loose, Martin","id":"462D4284-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","first_name":"Martin","orcid":"0000-0001-7309-9724"},{"id":"4159519E-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","first_name":"Jiří","orcid":"0000-0002-8302-7596","last_name":"Friml","full_name":"Friml, Jiří"}],"article_processing_charge":"Yes (via OA deal)","department":[{"_id":"MaLo"},{"_id":"JiFr"},{"_id":"CaBe"}],"OA_type":"hybrid","acknowledged_ssus":[{"_id":"EM-Fac"},{"_id":"LifeSc"},{"_id":"Bio"}]},{"page":"3823-3839","type":"journal_article","main_file_link":[{"url":"https://doi.org/10.48550/arXiv.2303.07245","open_access":"1"}],"month":"06","isi":1,"arxiv":1,"doi":"10.1109/TIT.2024.3367767","date_published":"2024-06-01T00:00:00Z","publication_identifier":{"issn":["0018-9448"],"eissn":["1557-9654"]},"researchdata_availability":"no","external_id":{"isi":["001230181100001"],"arxiv":["2303.07245"]},"das_tickbox":"0","quality_controlled":"1","publication":"IEEE Transactions on Information Theory","citation":{"mla":"Esposito, Amedeo Roberto, and Marco Mondelli. “Concentration without Independence via Information Measures.” IEEE Transactions on Information Theory, vol. 70, no. 6, IEEE, 2024, pp. 3823–39, doi:10.1109/TIT.2024.3367767.","chicago":"Esposito, Amedeo Roberto, and Marco Mondelli. “Concentration without Independence via Information Measures.” IEEE Transactions on Information Theory. The main idea is to “pretend” that the random variables are independent and pay a multiplicative price measuring how far they are from actually being independent. This price is encapsulated in the Hellinger integral between the joint and the product of the marginals, which is then upper bounded leveraging tensorisation properties. Our bounds represent a natural generalisation of concentration inequalities in the presence of dependence: we recover exactly the classical bounds (McDiarmid’s inequality) when the random variables are independent. Furthermore, in a “large deviations” regime, we obtain the same decay in the probability as for the independent case, even when the random variables display non-trivial dependencies. To show this, we consider a number of applications of interest. First, we provide a bound for Markov chains with finite state space. Then, we consider the Simple Symmetric Random Walk, which is a non-contracting Markov chain, and a non-Markovian setting in which the stochastic process depends on its entire past. To conclude, we propose an application to Markov Chain Monte Carlo methods, where our approach leads to an improved lower bound on the minimum burn-in period required to reach a certain accuracy. In all of these settings, we provide a regime of parameters in which our bound fares better than what the state of the art can provide."}],"year":"2024","supplementarymaterial":"yes","fulldoi":"https://doi.org/10.1109/TIT.2024.3367767","project":[{"_id":"059876FA-7A3F-11EA-A408-12923DDC885E","name":"Prix Lopez-Loretta 2019 - Marco Mondelli"}],"intvolume":" 70","issue":"6","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"department":[{"_id":"MaMo"}],"author":[{"full_name":"Esposito, Amedeo Roberto","last_name":"Esposito","first_name":"Amedeo Roberto","id":"9583e921-e1ad-11ec-9862-cef099626dc9"},{"last_name":"Mondelli","full_name":"Mondelli, Marco","id":"27EB676C-8706-11E9-9510-7717E6697425","first_name":"Marco","orcid":"0000-0002-3242-7020"}],"article_processing_charge":"No","oa":1,"scopus_import":"1","volume":70,"publisher":"IEEE","article_type":"original","oa_version":"Preprint","date_created":"2024-03-24T23:01:00Z","user_id":"317138e5-6ab7-11ef-aa6d-ffef3953e345","date_updated":"2026-10-16T10:39:43Z","related_material":{"record":[{"relation":"earlier_version","id":"14922","status":"public"}]}},{"conference":{"location":"Athens, Greece","start_date":"2024-07-07","name":"ISIT: International Symposium on Information Theory","end_date":"2024-07-12"},"supplementarymaterial":"no","acknowledgement":"The work in this paper was supported in part by the Swiss National Science Foundation under Grant 200364.\r\n","status":"public","title":"Properties of the strong data processing constant for Rényi divergence","corr_author":"1","abstract":[{"lang":"eng","text":"Strong data processing inequalities (SDPI) are an important object of study in Information Theory and have been well studied for f -divergences. Universal upper and lower bounds have been provided along with several applications, connecting them to impossibility (converse) results, concentration of measure, hypercontractivity, and so on. In this paper, we study Renyi divergence and the corresponding SDPI constant whose behavior seems to deviate from that of ordinary <1>-divergences. In particular, one can find examples showing that the universal upper bound relating its SDPI constant to the one of Total Variation does not hold in general. In this work, we prove, however, that the universal lower bound involving the SDPI constant of the Chi-square divergence does indeed hold. Furthermore, we also provide a characterization of the distribution that achieves the supremum when is equal to 2 and consequently compute the SDPI constant for Renyi divergence of the general binary channel."}],"year":"2024","publication_status":"published","citation":{"short":"L. For any N > 0 and L ∈ Z ≥2 , a multiple packing is a set C of points in R n such that any point in R n lies in the intersection of at most L - 1 balls of radius √ nN around points in C . This is a natural generalization of the sphere packing problem. We study the multiple packing problem for both bounded point sets whose points have norm at most √ nP for some constant P > 0, and unbounded point sets whose points are allowed to be anywhere in R n . Given a well-known connection with coding theory, multiple packings can be viewed as the Euclidean analog of list-decodable codes, which are well-studied over finite fields. We derive the best known lower bounds on the optimal multiple packing density. This is accomplished by establishing an inequality which relates the list-decoding error exponent for additive white Gaussian noise channels, a quantity of average-case nature, to the list-decoding radius, a quantity of worst-case nature. We also derive novel bounds on the list-decoding error exponent for infinite constellations and closed-form expressions for the list-decoding error exponents for the power-constrained AWGN channel, which may be of independent interest beyond multiple packing.","lang":"eng"}],"supplementarymaterial":"yes","acknowledgement":"The work of Yihan Zhang was supported by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Programme under Grant 682203-ERC-[Inf-Speed-Tradeoff]. In the 1970s, Stephen Jay Gould presented the first extensive data on antler size in the Irish elk and combined these with comparative data from other deer to test the hypothesis that the gigantic antlers were the outcome of a positive allometry that constrained large-bodied deer to have proportionally even larger antlers. He concluded that the Irish elk had antlers as predicted for its size and interpreted this within his emerging framework of developmental constraints as an explanatory factor in evolution. Here we reanalyze antler allometry based on new morphometric data for 57 taxa of the family Cervidae. We also present a new phylogeny for the Cervidae, which we use for comparative analyses. In contrast to Gould, we find that the antlers of Irish elk were larger than predicted from the allometry within the true deer, Cervini, as analyzed by Gould, but follow the allometry across Cervidae as a whole. After dissecting the discrepancy, we reject the allometric-constraint hypothesis because, contrary to Gould, we find no similarity between static and evolutionary allometries, and because we document extensive non-allometric evolution of antler size across the Cervidae."}],"year":"2024"},{"language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"project":[{"name":"Prix Lopez-Loretta 2019 - Marco Mondelli","_id":"059876FA-7A3F-11EA-A408-12923DDC885E"},{"grant_number":"PCEGP3_181181","_id":"9B8D11D6-BA93-11EA-9121-9846C619BF3A","name":"Improving estimation and prediction of common complex disease risk"}],"fulldoi":"https://doi.org/10.1109/ICASSP48485.2024.10447198","acknowledged_ssus":[{"_id":"ScienComp"}],"department":[{"_id":"MaMo"},{"_id":"MaRo"}],"author":[{"first_name":"Al","id":"0b77531d-dbcd-11ea-9d1d-a8eee0bf3830","full_name":"Depope, Al","last_name":"Depope"},{"last_name":"Mondelli","full_name":"Mondelli, Marco","orcid":"0000-0002-3242-7020","id":"27EB676C-8706-11E9-9510-7717E6697425","first_name":"Marco"},{"last_name":"Robinson","full_name":"Robinson, Matthew Richard","id":"E5D42276-F5DA-11E9-8E24-6303E6697425","first_name":"Matthew Richard","orcid":"0000-0001-8982-8813"}],"OA_type":"green","article_processing_charge":"No","scopus_import":"1","oa":1,"publisher":"IEEE","oa_version":"Submitted Version","date_updated":"2026-10-16T10:42:55Z","date_created":"2024-06-16T22:01:07Z","user_id":"317138e5-6ab7-11ef-aa6d-ffef3953e345","month":"04","isi":1,"page":"13151-13155","type":"conference","main_file_link":[{"url":"https://openreview.net/forum?id=aQYCDxfZV0","open_access":"1"}],"researchdata_availability":"no","publication_identifier":{"isbn":["9798350344851"],"issn":["1520-6149"]},"external_id":{"isi":["001396233806078"]},"doi":"10.1109/ICASSP48485.2024.10447198","date_published":"2024-04-19T00:00:00Z","publication_status":"published","das_tickbox":"0","quality_controlled":"1","publication":"2024 IEEE International Conference on Acoustics, Speech, and Signal Processing","day":"19","citation":{"apa":"Depope, A., Mondelli, M., & Robinson, M. Yet we lack efficient, accurate methods that scale to data where electronic health records are linked to whole genome sequence information. To address this issue, our paper develops a new algorithmic paradigm based on Approximate Message Passing (AMP), which is specifically tailored for genomic prediction and association testing. Our method yields comparable out-of-sample prediction accuracy to the state of the art on UK Biobank traits, whilst dramatically improving computational complexity, with a 8x-speed up in the run time. In addition, AMP theory provides a joint association testing framework, which outperforms the currently used REGENIE method, in roughly a third of the compute time. This first, truly large-scale application of the AMP framework lays the foundations for a far wider range of statistical analyses for hundreds of millions of variables measured on millions of people.","lang":"eng"}],"year":"2024"},{"intvolume":" 235","project":[{"name":"Prix Lopez-Loretta 2019 - Marco Mondelli","_id":"059876FA-7A3F-11EA-A408-12923DDC885E"}],"language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"scopus_import":"1","oa":1,"article_processing_charge":"No","department":[{"_id":"MaMo"}],"author":[{"last_name":"Bombari","full_name":"Bombari, Simone","id":"ca726dda-de17-11ea-bc14-f9da834f63aa","first_name":"Simone"},{"orcid":"0000-0002-3242-7020","id":"27EB676C-8706-11E9-9510-7717E6697425","first_name":"Marco","last_name":"Mondelli","full_name":"Mondelli, Marco"}],"OA_type":"green","volume":235,"oa_version":"Preprint","publisher":"ML Research Press","user_id":"317138e5-6ab7-11ef-aa6d-ffef3953e345","date_created":"2025-01-30T07:35:49Z","related_material":{"record":[{"relation":"dissertation_contains","id":"22857","status":"public"}]},"date_updated":"2026-10-16T10:42:17Z","type":"conference","main_file_link":[{"url":"https://doi.org/10.48550/arXiv.2402.02969","open_access":"1"}],"page":"4300-4328","month":"07","date_published":"2024-07-30T00:00:00Z","arxiv":1,"external_id":{"arxiv":["2402.02969"]},"publication_identifier":{"eissn":["2640-3498"]},"researchdata_availability":"no","_id":"18973","das_tickbox":"0","publication":"41st International Conference on Machine Learning","quality_controlled":"1","alternative_title":["PMLR"],"day":"30","citation":{"ama":"Bombari S, Mondelli M. In particular, such tasks require predictive models to capture contextual meaning which often depends on one or few words, even if the sentence is long. Our work studies this key property, dubbed word sensitivity (WS), in the prototypical setting of random features. We show that attention layers enjoy high WS, namely, there exists a vector in the space of embeddings that largely perturbs the random attention features map. The argument critically exploits the role of the softmax in the attention layer, highlighting its benefit compared to other activations (e.g., ReLU). In contrast, the WS of standard random features is of order 1/n−−√, n being the number of words in the textual sample, and thus it decays with the length of the context. We then translate these results on the word sensitivity into generalization bounds: due to their low WS, random features provably cannot learn to distinguish between two sentences that differ only in a single word; in contrast, due to their high WS, random attention features have higher generalization capabilities. We validate our theoretical results with experimental evidence over the BERT-Base word embeddings of the imdb review dataset."}],"year":"2024","corr_author":"1","status":"public","title":"Towards understanding the word sensitivity of attention layers: A study via random features","OA_place":"repository","acknowledgement":"The authors were partially supported by the 2019 LopezLoreta prize, and they would like to thank Mohammad Hossein Amani, Lorenzo Beretta, and Clement Rebuffel for helpful discussions.","supplementarymaterial":"no","conference":{"end_date":"2024-07-27","name":"ICML: International Conference on Machine Learning","location":"Vienna, Austria","start_date":"2024-07-21"}},{"related_material":{"record":[{"id":"22857","relation":"dissertation_contains","status":"public"}]},"date_updated":"2026-10-16T10:42:37Z","user_id":"317138e5-6ab7-11ef-aa6d-ffef3953e345","date_created":"2025-01-30T07:29:47Z","oa_version":"Preprint","publisher":"ML Research Press","volume":235,"oa":1,"scopus_import":"1","OA_type":"green","department":[{"_id":"MaMo"}],"article_processing_charge":"No","author":[{"last_name":"Bombari","full_name":"Bombari, Simone","id":"ca726dda-de17-11ea-bc14-f9da834f63aa","first_name":"Simone"},{"full_name":"Mondelli, Marco","last_name":"Mondelli","first_name":"Marco","id":"27EB676C-8706-11E9-9510-7717E6697425","orcid":"0000-0002-3242-7020"}],"language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"intvolume":" 235","project":[{"_id":"059876FA-7A3F-11EA-A408-12923DDC885E","name":"Prix Lopez-Loretta 2019 - Marco Mondelli"}],"acknowledgement":"The authors were partially supported by the 2019 LopezLoreta prize, and they would like to thank (in alphabetical order) Grigorios Chrysos, Simone Maria Giancola, Mahyar\r\nJafari Nodeh, Christoph Lampert, Marco Miani, GuanWen Qiu, and Peter Sukenık for helpful discussions.","OA_place":"repository","supplementarymaterial":"yes","conference":{"start_date":"2024-07-21","location":"Vienna, Austria","end_date":"2024-07-27","name":"ICML: International Conference on Machine Learning"},"year":"2024","abstract":[{"lang":"eng","text":"Deep learning models are known to overfit and memorize spurious features in the training dataset. While numerous empirical studies have aimed at understanding this phenomenon, a rigorous theoretical framework to quantify it is still missing. In this paper, we consider spurious features that are uncorrelated with the learning task, and we provide a precise characterization of how they are memorized via two separate terms: (i) the stability of the model with respect to individual training samples, and (ii) the feature alignment between the spurious pattern and the full sample. While the first term is well established in learning theory and it is connected to the generalization error in classical work, the second one is, to the best of our knowledge, novel. Our key technical result gives a precise characterization of the feature alignment for the two prototypical settings of random features (RF) and neural tangent kernel (NTK) regression. We prove that the memorization of spurious features weakens as the generalization capability increases and, through the analysis of the feature alignment, we unveil the role of the model and of its activation function. Numerical experiments show the predictive power of our theory on standard datasets (MNIST, CIFAR-10)."}],"corr_author":"1","status":"public","title":"How spurious features are memorized: Precise analysis for random and NTK features","publication_status":"published","_id":"18972","publication":"41st International Conference on Machine Learning","das_tickbox":"0","quality_controlled":"1","citation":{"short":"S. A code is called ( p , L ) q -list-decodable if every radius pn Hamming ball contains less than L codewords; ( p , ℓ, L ) q -recoverability is a generalization where we place radius pn Hamming balls on every point of a combinatorial rectangle with side length ℓ and again stipulate that there be less than L codewords. Our main contribution is to precisely calculate the maximum value of p for which there exist infinite families of positive rate ( p , ℓ, L ) q -list-recoverable codes, the quantity we call the zero-rate threshold . Denoting this value by p *, we in fact show that codes correcting a p * + ε fraction of errors must have size O ε (1), i.e., independent of n . Such a result is typically referred to as a “Plotkin bound.” To complement this, a standard random code with expurgation construction shows that there exist positive rate codes correcting a p * − ε fraction of errors. We also follow a classical proof template (typically attributed to Elias and Bassalygo) to derive from the zero-rate threshold other tradeoffs between rate and decoding radius for list-decoding and list-recovery. Technically, proving the Plotkin bound boils down to demon-strating the Schur convexity of a certain function defined on the q -simplex as well as the convexity of a univariate function derived from it. We remark that an earlier argument claimed similar results for q -ary list-decoding; however, we point out that this earlier proof is flawed."}],"year":"2024","title":"Zero-rate thresholds and new capacity bounds for list-decoding and list-recovery","status":"public","corr_author":"1","OA_place":"repository","acknowledgement":"Part of this work was done while Nicolas Resch was affiliated with the Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica and supported in part by ERC H2020 grant No.74079 (ALGSTRONGCRYPTO). This is possible due to the match between encoding/decoding strategies and corresponding channel models. Traditional studies of channels have taken one of two extremes: Shannon-theoretic models are inherently average-case in which channel noise is governed by a memoryless stochastic process, whereas coding-theoretic (referred to as “Hamming”) models take a worst-case, adversarial, view of the noise. However, for several existing and emerging communication systems the Shannon/average-case view may be too optimistic, whereas the Hamming/worstcase view may be too pessimistic. This monograph takes up the challenge of studying adversarial channel models that lie between the Shannon and Hamming extremes.","lang":"eng"}],"year":"2024","status":"public","title":"Codes for adversaries: Between worst-case and average-case jamming","corr_author":"1","supplementarymaterial":"unclear","type":"journal_article","page":"300-588","month":"12","doi":"10.1561/0100000112","date_published":"2024-12-03T00:00:00Z","researchdata_availability":"unclear","publication_identifier":{"eissn":["1567-2328"],"issn":["1567-2190"]},"volume":21,"oa_version":"None","article_type":"original","publisher":"Now Publishers","user_id":"317138e5-6ab7-11ef-aa6d-ffef3953e345","date_created":"2024-12-15T23:01:50Z","date_updated":"2026-10-16T10:40:55Z","issue":"3-4","intvolume":" 21","fulldoi":"https://doi.org/10.1561/0100000112","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"scopus_import":"1","OA_type":"closed access","department":[{"_id":"MaMo"}],"author":[{"full_name":"Dey, Bikash Kumar","last_name":"Dey","first_name":"Bikash Kumar"},{"last_name":"Jaggi","full_name":"Jaggi, Sidharth","first_name":"Sidharth"},{"full_name":"Langberg, Michael","last_name":"Langberg","first_name":"Michael"},{"full_name":"Sarwate, Anand D.","last_name":"Sarwate","first_name":"Anand D."},{"last_name":"Zhang","full_name":"Zhang, Yihan","id":"2ce5da42-b2ea-11eb-bba5-9f264e9d002c","first_name":"Yihan","orcid":"0000-0002-6465-6258"}],"article_processing_charge":"No"},{"corr_author":"1","title":"Tangent space generators of matrix product states and exact floquet quantum scars","status":"public","abstract":[{"text":"The advancement of quantum simulators motivates the development of a theoretical framework to assist with efficient state preparation in quantum many-body systems. Generally, preparing a target entangled state via unitary evolution with time-dependent couplings is a challenging task and very little is known about the existence of solutions and their properties. In this work we develop a constructive approach for preparing matrix product states (MPS) via continuous unitary evolution. We provide an explicit construction of the operator that exactly implements the evolution of a given MPS along a specified direction in its tangent space. This operator can be written as a sum of local terms of finite range, yet it is in general non-Hermitian. Relying on the explicit construction of the non-Hermitian generator of the dynamics, we demonstrate the existence of a Hermitian sequence of operators that implements the desired MPS evolution with an error that decreases exponentially with the operator range. The construction is benchmarked on an explicit periodic trajectory in a translationally invariant MPS manifold. We demonstrate that the Floquet unitary generating the dynamics over one period of the trajectory features an approximate MPS-like eigenstate embedded among a sea of thermalizing eigenstates. These results show that our construction is not only useful for state preparation and control of many-body systems, but also provides a generic route towards Floquet scars—periodically driven models with quasilocal generators of dynamics that have exact MPS eigenstates in their spectrum.","lang":"eng"}],"year":"2024","supplementarymaterial":"yes","acknowledgement":"We thank L. Upon adjusting parameters of local unitary gates, the dynamics can be either chaotic or integrable. The latter corresponds to a generalization of the space-time discretized (Trotterized) higher-spin quantum Heisenberg chain. We demonstrate that breaking of space-reflection symmetry results in a drift in the dynamical spin susceptibility. Remarkably, we find a universal drift velocity given by a simple formula, which, at zero average magnetization, depends only on the values of SU(2) Casimir invariants associated with local spins. In the integrable case, the drift velocity formula is confirmed analytically based on the exact solution of thermodynamic Bethe ansatz equations. Finally, by inspecting the large fluctuations of the time-integrated current between two halves of the system in stationary maximum-entropy states, we demonstrate violation of the Gallavotti-Cohen symmetry, implying that such states cannot be regarded as equilibrium ones. We show that the scaled cumulant generating function of the time-integrated current instead obeys a generalized fluctuation relation."}],"year":"2024","status":"public","title":"Quantum many-body spin ratchets","acknowledgement":"The authors thank Denis Bernard, Jérôme Dubail, Hosho Katsura, Kareljan Schoutens, and Alberto Zorzato for stimulating discussions. Error mitigation extends the size of the quantum circuits that noisy devices can meaningfully execute. However, state-of-the-art error mitigation methods are hard to implement and the limited qubit connectivity in superconducting qubit devices restricts most applications to the hardware's native topology. Here we show a quantum approximate optimization algorithm (QAOA) on nonplanar random regular graphs with up to 40 nodes enabled by a machine learning-based error mitigation. We use a swap network with careful decision-variable-to-qubit mapping and a feed-forward neural network to optimize a depth-two QAOA on up to 40 qubits. We observe a meaningful parameter optimization for the largest graph which requires running quantum circuits with 958 two-qubit gates. Our paper emphasizes the need to mitigate samples, and not only expectation values, in quantum approximate optimization. These results are a step towards executing quantum approximate optimization at a scale that is not classically simulable. Reaching such system sizes is key to properly understanding the true potential of heuristic algorithms like QAOA."}]},{"article_number":"L100304","article_processing_charge":"No","department":[{"_id":"MaSe"}],"author":[{"full_name":"Brighi, Pietro","last_name":"Brighi","first_name":"Pietro","id":"4115AF5C-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","orcid":"0000-0002-7969-2729"},{"first_name":"Marko","id":"F75EE9BE-5C90-11EA-905D-16643DDC885E","orcid":"0000-0003-0038-7068","full_name":"Ljubotina, Marko","last_name":"Ljubotina"}],"scopus_import":"1","oa":1,"language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"project":[{"grant_number":"850899","call_identifier":"H2020","_id":"23841C26-32DE-11EA-91FC-C7463DDC885E","name":"Non-Ergodic Quantum Matter: Universality, Dynamics and Control"}],"fulldoi":"https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevB.110.L100304","issue":"10","intvolume":" 110","date_updated":"2026-10-16T12:12:47Z","date_created":"2024-09-22T22:01:42Z","user_id":"317138e5-6ab7-11ef-aa6d-ffef3953e345","publisher":"American Physical Society","article_type":"letter_note","oa_version":"Preprint","volume":110,"researchdata_availability":"no","publication_identifier":{"issn":["2469-9950"],"eissn":["2469-9969"]},"external_id":{"arxiv":["2405.02102"],"isi":["001361617100003"]},"arxiv":1,"date_published":"2024-09-11T00:00:00Z","doi":"10.1103/PhysRevB.110.L100304","month":"09","isi":1,"ec_funded":1,"type":"journal_article","main_file_link":[{"open_access":"1","url":"https://doi.org/10.48550/arXiv.2405.02102"}],"supplementarymaterial":"no","acknowledgement":"The authors acknowledge useful discussions with M. Through extensive numerical simulations we find that the domain wall state shows a variety of dynamical behaviors from localization all the way to ballistic transport, depending on the value of the reflection breaking parameter. Surprisingly, such anomalous behavior is not mirrored in infinite-temperature dynamics, which appear to scale diffusively, in line with expectations for generic interacting models. However, studying the particle density gradient, we show that the lack of reflection symmetry affects infinite-temperature dynamics, resulting in an asymmetric dynamical structure factor. This is in disagreement with normal diffusion and suggests that the model may also exhibit anomalous dynamics at infinite temperature in the thermodynamic limit. Finally, we observe low-entangled eigenstates in the spectrum of the model, a telltale sign of quantum many-body scars."}],"publication_status":"published","quality_controlled":"1","das_tickbox":"0","publication":"Physical Review B","day":"11","citation":{"ama":"Brighi P, Ljubotina M. We reveal the self-similarity of the ground state, which allows us to develop a recurrent procedure for finding the ground-state wave functions and predicting ground-state energies. We present the results of recurrently calculating ground-state wave functions using the fractal Ansatz and automized software package for fractal image processing. In certain parameter regimes, just a few terms are enough for our recurrent procedure to predict ground-state energies close to the exact ones for several hundreds of sites. In this thesis, with a focus on ground state search/preparation, we address some of the challenges that both quantum annealing and variational quantum algorithms suffer from, hindering any possible practical speedup in comparison to the best classical counterparts. \r\n\r\nIn the first part of the thesis, we study the performance of quantum annealing for solving a particular combinatorial optimization problem called 3-XOR satisfability (3-XORSAT). The classical problem is mapped into a ground state search of a 3-local classical Hamiltonian $H_C$. We consider how modifying the initial problem, by adding more interaction terms to the corresponding Hamiltonian, leads to the emergence of a first-order phase transition during the annealing process. This phenomenon causes the total annealing duration, $T$, required to prepare the ground state of $H_C$ with a high probability to increase exponentially with the size of the problem. Our findings indicate that with the growing complexity of problem instances, the likelihood of encountering first-order phase transitions also increases, making quantum annealing an impractical solution for these types of combinatorial optimization problems.\r\n\r\nIn the second part, we focus on the problem of barren plateaus in generic variational quantum algorithms. Barren plateaus correspond to flat regions in the parameter space where the gradient of the cost function is zero in expectation, and with the variance decaying exponentially with the system size, thus obstructing an efficient parameter optimization. We propose an algorithm to circumvent Barren Plateaus by monitoring the entanglement entropy of k-local reduced density matrices, alongside a method for estimating entanglement entropy via classical shadow tomography. We illustrate the approach with the paradigmatic example of the variational quantum eigensolver, and show that our algorithm effectively avoids barren plateaus in the initialization as well as during the optimization stage. \r\n\r\nLastly, in the last two Chapters of this thesis, we focus on the quantum approximate optimization algorithm (QAOA), originally introduced as an algorithm for solving generic combinatorial optimization problems in near-term quantum devices. Specifically, we focus on how to develop rigorous initialization strategies with guarantee improvement. Our motivation for this study lies in that for random initialization, the optimization typically leads to local minima with poor performance. Our main result corresponds to the analytical construction of index-1 saddle points or transition states, stationary points with a single direction of descent, as a tool for systematically exploring the QAOA optimization landscape. This leads us to propose a novel greedy parameter initialization strategy that guarantees for the energy to decrease with an increasing number of circuit layers. Furthermore, with precise estimates for the negative Hessian eigenvalue and its eigenvector, we establish a lower bound for energy improvement following a QAOA iteration.","lang":"eng"}],"year":"2024","corr_author":"1","title":"Exploring the optimization landscape of variational quantum algorithms","status":"public"},{"_id":"17493","quality_controlled":"1","das_tickbox":"0","publication":"Physical Review X","day":"26","citation":{"apa":"Vermersch, B., Ljubotina, M., Cirac, J. In this work, we address the problem of estimating global entropies and mixed-state entanglement via partial-transposed (PT) moments and show that efficient estimation strategies exist under the assumption that all the spatial correlation lengths are finite. Focusing on one-dimensional systems, we identify a set of approximate factorization conditions (AFCs) on the system density matrix, which allow us to reconstruct entropies and PT moments from information on local subsystems. This identification yields a simple and efficient strategy for entropy and entanglement estimation. Our method could be implemented in different ways, depending on how information on local subsystems is extracted. Focusing on randomized measurements providing a practical and common measurement scheme, we prove that our protocol requires only polynomially many measurements and postprocessing operations, assuming that the state to be measured satisfies the AFCs. We prove that the AFCs hold for finite-depth quantum-circuit states and translation-invariant matrix-product density operators and provide numerical evidence that they are satisfied in more general, physically interesting cases, including thermal states of local Hamiltonians. We argue that our method could be practically useful to detect bipartite mixed-state entanglement for large numbers of qubits available in today’s quantum platforms."}],"title":"Many-body entropies and entanglement from polynomially many local measurements","status":"public","OA_place":"publisher","DOAJ_listed":"1","acknowledgement":"B. V. acknowledges funding from the Austrian Science Foundation (Grant No. FWF, P 32597 N), from the French National Research Agency via the JCJC project QRand (Grant No. ANR-20-CE47-0005), and via the research programs Plan France 2030 EPIQ (Grant No. ANR-22-PETQ-0007), QUBITAF (Grant No. ANR-22-PETQ-0004), and HQI (Grant No. ANR-22-PNCQ-0002).
