We examine both the time-averaged and time-series alkali spectral flux individually, over 4 nights at a hot Saturn system on a ∼2.8 day orbit about a Sun-like star WASP-49 A. Very Large Telescope/ESPRESSO observations are analyzed, providing new constraints. We recover the previously confirmed residual sodium flux uniquely when averaged, whereas night-to-night Na i varies by more than an order of magnitude. On HARPS/3.6 m Epoch II, we report a Doppler redshift at vΓ,NaD = + 9.7 ± 1.6 km s−1 with respect to the planet's rest frame. Upon examining the lightcurves, we confirm night-to-night variability, on the order of ∼1%–4% in NaD, rarely coinciding with exoplanet transit, not readily explained by stellar activity, starspots, tellurics, or the interstellar medium. Coincident with the ∼+10 km s−1 Doppler redshift, we detect a transient sodium absorption event dFNaD/F⋆ = 3.6% ± 1% at a relative difference of ΔFNaD(t) ∼ 4.4% ± 1%, lasting ΔtNaD ≳ 40 minutes. Since exoplanetary alkali signatures are blueshifted due to the natural vector of radiation pressure, estimated here at roughly ∼−5.7 km s−1, the radial velocity is rather at +15.4 km s−1, far larger than any known exoplanet system. Given that the redshift magnitude vΓ is in between the Roche limit and dynamically stable satellite orbits, the transient sodium may be a putative indication of a natural satellite orbiting WASP-49 A b.","lang":"eng"}],"ddc":["520"],"scopus_import":"1","date_updated":"2026-10-16T08:52:49Z","day":"01","fulldoi":"https://doi.org/10.3847/2041-8213/ad6b29","issue":"2","status":"public","has_accepted_license":"1","type":"journal_article","dataavailabilitystatement":"ESO data is available publicly on ESO’s science archive facility at archive.eso.org/eso/eso_archive_main.html.","department":[{"_id":"LiBu"}],"year":"2024","file":[{"file_size":1249747,"date_created":"2024-10-21T11:05:11Z","file_id":"18456","access_level":"open_access","checksum":"23eea2a6a0519694a84998957ad7b7fb","success":1,"content_type":"application/pdf","file_name":"2024_AstrophysicalJourn_Oza.pdf","relation":"main_file","creator":"dernst","date_updated":"2024-10-21T11:05:11Z"}],"arxiv":1,"quality_controlled":"1","OA_type":"gold","researchdata_availability":"yes","acknowledgement":"The research described in this Letter was carried out in part at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, California Institute of Technology, under a contract with the National Aeronautics Space Administration, © 2024. However, current measurements, which are limited to dipolar (ℓ = 1) mixed modes, do not properly constrain the topology of magnetic fields due to degeneracies on the observed magnetic field signature on such ℓ = 1 mode frequencies. Efforts focused toward unambiguous detections of magnetic field configurations are now key to better understand angular momentum transport in stars. We investigated the detectability of complex magnetic field topologies (such as the ones observed at the surface of stars with a radiative envelope with spectropolarimetry) inside the radiative interior of red giants. We focused on a field composed of a combination of a dipole and a quadrupole (quadrudipole) and on an offset field. We explored the potential of probing such magnetic field topologies from a combined measurement of magnetic signatures on ℓ = 1 and quadrupolar (ℓ = 2) mixed mode oscillation frequencies. We first derived the asymptotic theoretical formalism for computing the asymmetric signature in the frequency pattern for ℓ = 2 modes due to a quadrudipole magnetic field. To access asymmetry parameters for more complex magnetic field topologies, we numerically performed a grid search over the parameter space to map the degeneracy of the signatures of given topologies. We demonstrate the crucial role played by ℓ = 2 mixed modes in accessing internal magnetic fields with a quadrupolar component. The degeneracy of the quadrudipole compared to pure dipolar fields is lifted when considering magnetic asymmetries in both ℓ = 1 and ℓ = 2 mode frequencies. In addition to the analytical derivation for the quadrudipole, we present the prospect for complex magnetic field inversions using magnetic sensitivity kernels from standard perturbation analysis for forward modeling. Using this method, we explored the detectability of offset magnetic fields from ℓ = 1 and ℓ = 2 frequencies and demonstrate that offset fields may be mistaken for weak and centered magnetic fields, resulting in underestimating the magnetic field strength in stellar cores. We emphasize the need to characterize ℓ = 2 mixed-mode frequencies, (along with the currently characterized ℓ = 1 mixed modes), to unveil the higher-order components of the geometry of buried magnetic fields and to better constrain angular momentum transport inside stars.","lang":"eng"}],"author":[{"last_name":"Das","orcid":"0000-0003-0896-7972","id":"9ce7c423-dacf-11ed-8942-e09c6cb27149","full_name":"Das, Srijan B","first_name":"Srijan B"},{"last_name":"Einramhof","full_name":"Einramhof, Lukas","first_name":"Lukas","id":"f1497a1a-72ef-11ef-b75a-fd877bbf6e8c"},{"last_name":"Bugnet","id":"d9edb345-f866-11ec-9b37-d119b5234501","orcid":"0000-0003-0142-4000","first_name":"Lisa Annabelle","full_name":"Bugnet, Lisa Annabelle"}],"external_id":{"isi":["001336485200015"],"arxiv":["2405.20133"]},"article_number":"A217","file_date_updated":"2024-11-11T09:01:11Z","user_id":"317138e5-6ab7-11ef-aa6d-ffef3953e345","corr_author":"1","isi":1,"related_material":{"record":[{"id":"22802","status":"public","relation":"research_data"}]},"language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"intvolume":" 690","citation":{"apa":"Das, S. Presynaptic neurotransmitters regulate the stabilization of postsynaptic transmitter receptors. Whether postsynaptic receptors regulate stabilization of presynaptic transmitters has received less attention. Here, we show that blockade of endogenous postsynaptic acetylcholine receptors (AChR) at the neuromuscular junction destabilizes the cholinergic phenotype in motor neurons and stabilizes an earlier, developmentally transient glutamatergic phenotype. Further, expression of exogenous postsynaptic gamma-aminobutyric acid type A receptors (GABAA receptors) in muscle cells stabilizes an earlier, developmentally transient GABAergic motor neuron phenotype. Both AChR and GABAA receptors are linked to presynaptic neurons through transsynaptic bridges. Knockdown of specific components of these transsynaptic bridges prevents stabilization of the cholinergic or GABAergic phenotypes. Bidirectional communication can enforce a match between transmitter and receptor and ensure the fidelity of synaptic transmission. Our findings suggest a potential role of dysfunctional transmitter receptors in neurological disorders that involve the loss of the presynaptic transmitter."}],"author":[{"full_name":"Godavarthi, Swetha K.","first_name":"Swetha K.","last_name":"Godavarthi"},{"last_name":"Hiramoto","full_name":"Hiramoto, Masaki","first_name":"Masaki"},{"full_name":"Ignatyev, Yuri","first_name":"Yuri","last_name":"Ignatyev"},{"full_name":"Levin, Jacqueline B.","first_name":"Jacqueline B.","last_name":"Levin"},{"full_name":"Li, Hui Quan","first_name":"Hui Quan","last_name":"Li"},{"last_name":"Pratelli","full_name":"Pratelli, Marta","first_name":"Marta"},{"last_name":"Borchardt","full_name":"Borchardt, Jennifer","first_name":"Jennifer"},{"full_name":"Czajkowski, Cynthia","first_name":"Cynthia","last_name":"Czajkowski"},{"last_name":"Borodinsky","first_name":"Laura N.","full_name":"Borodinsky, Laura N."},{"last_name":"Sweeney","orcid":"0000-0001-9242-5601","id":"56BE8254-C4F0-11E9-8E45-0B23E6697425","first_name":"Lora Beatrice Jaeger","full_name":"Sweeney, Lora Beatrice Jaeger"},{"first_name":"Hollis T.","full_name":"Cline, Hollis T.","last_name":"Cline"},{"last_name":"Spitzer","full_name":"Spitzer, Nicholas C.","first_name":"Nicholas C."}],"external_id":{"pmid":["38568976"],"isi":["001243892800004"]},"doi":"10.1073/pnas.2318041121","date_created":"2024-04-21T22:00:53Z","publication_status":"published","article_processing_charge":"Yes (in subscription journal)","oa_version":"Published Version","publication_identifier":{"eissn":["1091-6490"]},"fulldoi":"https://doi.org/10.1073/pnas.2318041121","pmid":1,"day":"09","date_updated":"2026-10-16T08:57:16Z","ddc":["570"],"scopus_import":"1","has_accepted_license":"1","status":"public","type":"journal_article","issue":"15","department":[{"_id":"LoSw"}],"dataavailabilitystatement":"All data are included in the manuscript and/or supporting information.","file":[{"date_updated":"2024-04-23T06:53:14Z","creator":"dernst","file_name":"2024_PNAS_Godavarthi.pdf","relation":"main_file","content_type":"application/pdf","success":1,"checksum":"f3b4ffad4ef3d1c443414edf0cd2392c","access_level":"open_access","file_id":"15340","date_created":"2024-04-23T06:53:14Z","file_size":16187094}],"year":"2024","acknowledgement":"We thank all members of the Spitzer laboratory for discussions and critical feedback; K. Here, we describe recent advances from both vertebrate (mouse, frog) and invertebrate (nematode, fruit fly) systems on cellular and molecular mechanisms that enable motor circuits to develop and function and highlight conserved and divergent mechanisms necessary for motor circuit development.","lang":"eng"}],"author":[{"first_name":"Paschalis","full_name":"Kratsios, Paschalis","last_name":"Kratsios"},{"last_name":"Zampieri","first_name":"Niccolò","full_name":"Zampieri, Niccolò"},{"last_name":"Carrillo","first_name":"Robert","full_name":"Carrillo, Robert"},{"first_name":"Kota","full_name":"Mizumoto, Kota","last_name":"Mizumoto"},{"last_name":"Sweeney","first_name":"Lora Beatrice Jaeger","full_name":"Sweeney, Lora Beatrice Jaeger","id":"56BE8254-C4F0-11E9-8E45-0B23E6697425","orcid":"0000-0001-9242-5601"},{"first_name":"Polyxeni","full_name":"Philippidou, Polyxeni","last_name":"Philippidou"}],"language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"isi":1,"user_id":"317138e5-6ab7-11ef-aa6d-ffef3953e345","publication":"The Journal of Neuroscience","citation":{"ama":"Kratsios P, Zampieri N, Carrillo R, Mizumoto K, Sweeney LB, Philippidou P. However, their internal flows, which can be probed only by helioseismology, are not well understood. We analyse dopplergrams recorded by the Solar Dynamics Observatory satellite to identify and characterize ~23,000 supergranules. We find that the vertical flows peak at a depth of ~10,000 km, and remain invariant over the full range of lateral supergranular scales, contrary to numerical predictions. We also infer that, within the local seismic resolution (≳5,000 km), downflows are ~40% weaker than upflows, indicating an apparent mass-flux imbalance. This may imply that the descending flows also comprise plumes, which maintain the mass balance but are simply too small to be detected by seismic waves. These results challenge the widely used mixing-length description of solar convection.","lang":"eng"}],"external_id":{"isi":["001254181700001"]},"publication_status":"published","article_processing_charge":"No","doi":"10.1038/s41550-024-02304-w","date_created":"2024-06-30T22:01:05Z","oa_version":"None","publication_identifier":{"eissn":["2397-3366"]},"intvolume":" 8","citation":{"mla":"Hanson, Chris S., et al. “Supergranular-Scale Solar Convection Not Explained by Mixing-Length Theory.” <i>Nature Astronomy</i>, vol. 8, Springer Nature, 2024, pp. 1088–101, doi:<a href=\"https://doi.org/10.1038/s41550-024-02304-w\">10.1038/s41550-024-02304-w</a>.","apa":"Hanson, C. How CR affects the structure-function of pancreatic beta cells remains unknown. We used single nucleus transcriptomics to show that CR increases the expression of genes for beta cell identity, protein processing, and organelle homeostasis. Gene regulatory network analysis reveal that CR activates transcription factors important for beta cell identity and homeostasis, while imaging metabolomics demonstrates that beta cells upon CR are more energetically competent. In fact, high-resolution microscopy show that CR reduces beta cell mitophagy to increase mitochondria mass and the potential for ATP generation. However, CR beta cells have impaired adaptive proliferation in response to high fat diet feeding. Finally, we show that long-term CR delays the onset of beta cell aging hallmarks and promotes cell longevity by reducing beta cell turnover. Therefore, CR could be a feasible approach to preserve compromised beta cell structure-function during aging and diabetes.","lang":"eng"}],"publication_status":"published","date_created":"2024-10-27T23:01:44Z","article_processing_charge":"Yes","doi":"10.1038/s41467-024-53127-2","publication_identifier":{"eissn":["2041-1723"]},"oa_version":"Published Version","publisher":"Springer Nature","_id":"18480","supplementarymaterial":"yes","title":"Calorie restriction increases insulin sensitivity to promote beta cell homeostasis and longevity in mice","article_type":"original","tmp":{"name":"Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International Public License (CC-BY 4.0)","short":"CC BY (4.0)","image":"/images/cc_by.png","legal_code_url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/legalcode"},"oa":1,"OA_place":"publisher","date_published":"2024-10-21T00:00:00Z","das_tickbox":"1","volume":15,"month":"10","dataavailabilitystatement":"Tabular and processed sequencing data is deposited in Zenodo (https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.6491943). The life span of nuclear RNAs, which are critical for proper chromatin architecture and transcription regulation, has not been determined in adult tissues. In this work, we identified and characterized nuclear RNAs that do not turn over for at least 2 years in a subset of postnatally born cells in the mouse brain. These long-lived RNAs were stably retained in nuclei in a neural cell type–specific manner and were required for the maintenance of heterochromatin. Thus, the life span of neural cells may depend on both the molecular longevity of DNA for the storage of genetic information and also the extreme stability of RNA for the functional organization of chromatin.","lang":"eng"}],"publication_identifier":{"eissn":["1095-9203"],"issn":["0036-8075"]},"oa_version":"Submitted Version","article_processing_charge":"No","publication_status":"published","doi":"10.1126/science.adf3481","date_created":"2024-04-14T22:01:01Z","publication":"Science","intvolume":" 384","citation":{"apa":"Zocher, S., Mccloskey, A., Karasinsky, A., Schulte, R., Friedrich, U., Lesche, M., … Toda, T. To query sources of variation in AAV injection outcomes, we analyzed metadata and outcomes for an additional 68 intraparenchymal injections performed 39 in post-metamorphic Pleurodeles salamanders. This dataset included both quantitative variables (age, weight, viral genomes (v.g.) injected, and a cell transduction score ranging from 0 to 4, see STAR Methods) and categorical variables (here referred to as qualitative variables: serotype, promoter, reporter, single vs. dual injection, manufacturer, and injection site). To assess the associations between these variables, we performed a Factor Analysis for Mixed Data (FAMD), a principal component method that is designed to determine significant sources of variability within datasets that contain both quantitative and qualitative data types. This dataset contains the injection outcomes and metadata for AAV injections administered in the salamander Pleurodeles waltl. The RactoMineR package (https://CRAN.R-project.org/package=FactoMineR) was used to determine significant contributions of a number of variables contributing to injection outcomes. Analysis of these data revealed that, among other factors, age co-varies with injection score. Therefore, we conclude that increased animal age decreases the efficacy of this tool.","lang":"eng"}],"user_id":"317138e5-6ab7-11ef-aa6d-ffef3953e345","year":"2024","department":[{"_id":"E-Lib"}],"related_material":{"record":[{"status":"public","id":"15016","relation":"used_in_publication"}]},"citation":{"mla":"Jaeger, Eliza. <i>Multivariate Analysis of Pleurodeles Waltl Injection Outcomes Using FAMD FactoMineR (RStudio 4.3.2) Used to Probe Sources of Variability during an Adeno-Associated Viral (AAV) Screen</i>. However, the relatively high material processing cost limits their real applications. Silver selenide (Ag2Se) is one of the very few n-type thermoelectric (TE) materials for room-temperature applications. Herein, we report a room temperature, fast, and aqueous-phase synthesis approach to produce Ag2Se, which can be extended to other metal chalcogenides. These materials reach TE figures of merit (zT) of up to 0.76 at 380 K. To improve these values, bismuth sulfide (Bi2S3) particles also prepared in an aqueous solution are incorporated into the Ag2Se matrix. In this way, a series of Ag2Se/Bi2S3 composites with Bi2S3 wt % of 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 are prepared by solution blending and hot-press sintering. The presence of Bi2S3 significantly improves the Seebeck coefficient and power factor while at the same time decreasing the thermal conductivity with no apparent drop in electrical conductivity. Thus, a maximum zT value of 0.96 is achieved in the composites with 1.0 wt % Bi2S3 at 370 K. Furthermore, a high average zT value (zTave) of 0.93 in the 300–390 K range is demonstrated.","lang":"eng"}],"external_id":{"isi":["000986859000001"],"pmid":["38828037"]}},{"acknowledgement":"The Scientific Service Units (SSU) of ISTA supported this research through resources provided by the Electron Microscopy Facility (EMF) and the Lab Support Facility (LSF). The process entails a series of critical steps: synthesis, purification, thermal treatments, and consolidation, each playing a pivotal role in determining performance, stability, and reproducibility. We have noticed a need for more comprehensive details for each of the described steps in most published works. Recognizing the significance of detailed synthetic protocols, we describe here the approach used to synthesize and characterize one of the highest-performing polycrystalline p-type SnSe. In particular, we report the synthesis of SnSe particles in water and the subsequent surface treatment with CdSe molecular complexes that yields CdSe-SnSe nanocomposites upon consolidation. Moreover, the surface treatment inhibits grain growth through Zenner pinning of secondary phase CdSe nanoparticles and enhances defect formation at different length scales. The enhanced complexity in the CdSe-SnSe nanocomposite microstructure with respect to SnSe promotes phonon scattering and thereby significantly reduces the thermal conductivity. Such surface engineering provides opportunities in solution processing for introducing and controlling defects, making it possible to optimize the transport properties and attain a high thermoelectric figure of merit."}],"author":[{"first_name":"Christine","full_name":"Fiedler, Christine","id":"bd3fceba-dc74-11ea-a0a7-c17f71817366","last_name":"Fiedler"},{"full_name":"Liu, Yu","first_name":"Yu","orcid":"0000-0001-7313-6740","id":"2A70014E-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","last_name":"Liu"},{"last_name":"Ibáñez","full_name":"Ibáñez, Maria","first_name":"Maria","id":"43C61214-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","orcid":"0000-0001-5013-2843"}],"file_date_updated":"2025-02-17T15:08:55Z","article_number":"e66278","oa_version":"Published Version","publication_identifier":{"issn":["1940-087X"]},"publication_status":"published","article_processing_charge":"Yes (in subscription journal)","date_created":"2024-06-09T22:01:02Z","doi":"10.3791/66278","publication":"Journal of Visualized Experiments","intvolume":" 2024","citation":{"chicago":"Fiedler, Christine, Yu Liu, and Maria Ibáñez. “Solution-Processed, Surface-Engineered, Polycrystalline CdSe-SnSe Exhibiting Low Thermal Conductivity.” <i>Journal of Visualized Experiments</i>. Here we show that the Dsc ubiquitin ligase complex uses its rhomboid pseudo-protease subunit, Dsc2, to assess the hydrophobic length of α-helical transmembrane domains (TMDs) at the Golgi. Thereby the Dsc complex likely interacts with orphaned ER and Golgi proteins that have shorter TMDs and ubiquitinates them for targeted degradation. Some Dsc substrates will be extracted by Cdc48 for endosome and Golgi associated proteasomal degradation (EGAD), while others will undergo ESCRT dependent vacuolar degradation. Some substrates are degraded by both, EGAD- or ESCRT pathways. The accumulation of Dsc substrates entails a specific increase in glycerophospholipids with shorter and asymmetric fatty acyl chains. Hence, the Dsc complex mediates the selective degradation of orphaned proteins at the sorting center of cells, which prevents their spreading across other organelles and thereby preserves cellular membrane protein and lipid composition.","lang":"eng"}],"author":[{"first_name":"Yannick","full_name":"Weyer, Yannick","last_name":"Weyer"},{"last_name":"Schwabl","first_name":"Sinead I.","full_name":"Schwabl, Sinead I."},{"full_name":"Tang, Xuechen","first_name":"Xuechen","last_name":"Tang"},{"first_name":"Astha","full_name":"Purwar, Astha","last_name":"Purwar"},{"last_name":"Siegmann","first_name":"Konstantin","full_name":"Siegmann, Konstantin"},{"first_name":"Angela","full_name":"Ruepp, Angela","last_name":"Ruepp"},{"first_name":"Theresia","full_name":"Dunzendorfer-Matt, Theresia","last_name":"Dunzendorfer-Matt"},{"first_name":"Michael A.","full_name":"Widerin, Michael A.","last_name":"Widerin"},{"last_name":"Niedrist","full_name":"Niedrist, Veronika","first_name":"Veronika"},{"last_name":"Mutsters","first_name":"Noa J.M.","full_name":"Mutsters, Noa J.M."},{"first_name":"Maria G.","full_name":"Tettamanti, Maria G.","last_name":"Tettamanti"},{"id":"caffa136-9669-11ed-9092-ceac12ac9c05","first_name":"Sabine","full_name":"Weys, Sabine","last_name":"Weys"},{"last_name":"Sarg","full_name":"Sarg, Bettina","first_name":"Bettina"},{"full_name":"Kremser, Leopold","first_name":"Leopold","last_name":"Kremser"},{"last_name":"Liedl","full_name":"Liedl, Klaus R.","first_name":"Klaus R."},{"last_name":"Schmidt","full_name":"Schmidt, Oliver","first_name":"Oliver"},{"full_name":"Teis, David","first_name":"David","last_name":"Teis"}],"date_created":"2024-11-10T23:01:58Z","doi":"10.1038/s41467-024-53676-6","article_processing_charge":"Yes","publication_status":"published","publication_identifier":{"eissn":["2041-1723"]},"oa_version":"Published Version","publication":"Nature Communications","intvolume":" 15","citation":{"apa":"Weyer, Y., Schwabl, S. However, sluggish ionic transport kinetics and the unstable electrode structure during ionic insertion/extraction hampers their deployment. Herein,  we propose a new cathode material based on a layered metal chalcogenide (LMC), bismuth telluride (Bi2Te3), coated with polypyrrole (PPy). Taking advantage of the PPy coating, the Bi2Te3@PPy composite presents strong ionic absorption affinity, high oxidation resistance, and high structural stability. The ZIBs based on Bi2Te3@PPy cathodes exhibit high capacities and ultra‐long lifespans of over 5000 cycles. They also present outstanding stability even under bending. In addition,  we analyze here the reaction mechanism using in situ X‐ray diffraction, X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and computational tools and demonstrate that, in the aqueous system, Zn2+ is not inserted into the cathode as previously assumed. In contrast, proton charge storage dominates the process. Overall, this work not only shows the great potential of LMCs as ZIBs cathode materials and the advantages of PPy coating, but also clarifies the charge/discharge mechanism in rechargeable ZIBs based on LMCs.","lang":"eng"}],"date_created":"2023-10-17T10:53:56Z","article_processing_charge":"No","doi":"10.1002/adma.202305128","publication_status":"published","publication_identifier":{"issn":["0935-9648"],"eissn":["1521-4095"]},"oa_version":"None","publisher":"Wiley","supplementarymaterial":"yes","_id":"14435","title":"A layered Bi2Te3@PPy cathode for aqueous zinc ion batteries: Mechanism and application in printed flexible batteries","article_type":"original","acknowledged_ssus":[{"_id":"EM-Fac"}],"das_tickbox":"1","date_published":"2024-01-04T00:00:00Z","month":"01","volume":36},{"scopus_import":"1","fulldoi":"https://doi.org/10.1021/acsaem.3c02519","day":"08","date_updated":"2026-10-16T09:20:00Z","issue":"1","page":"214-229","status":"public","type":"journal_article","department":[{"_id":"MaIb"}],"year":"2024","keyword":["Electrical and Electronic Engineering","Materials Chemistry","Electrochemistry","Energy Engineering and Power Technology","Chemical Engineering (miscellaneous)"],"researchdata_availability":"no","quality_controlled":"1","acknowledgement":"This work was supported by the Technology Innovation Program (20011622, Development of Battery System Applied High-Efficiency Heat Control Polymer and Part Component) funded by the Ministry of Trade, Industry & Energy (MOTIE, Korea). The vacuum-synthesized catalyst demonstrates a low overpotential of 88 mV at −10 mA cm–2 and a small Tafel slope of 73 mV dec–1 suggesting relatively higher charge transfer kinetics for hydrogen evolution reactions (HER) compared with the specimens synthesized under N2 or O2 atmosphere. It also demonstrates an oxygen evolution (OER) overpotential of 260 mV at 10 mA cm–2 with a low Tafel slope of 63 mV dec–1. In a full-cell water-splitting device, the vacuum-synthesized ZnNiO heterostructure demonstrates a cell voltage of 1.94 V at 50 mA cm–2 and shows remarkable stability over 24 h at a high current density of 100 mA cm–2. It is also demonstrated in this study that Zn-doping, surface, and interface engineering in transition-metal oxides play a crucial role in efficient electrocatalytic water splitting. Also, the results obtained from density functional theory (DFT + U = 0–8 eV), where U is the on-site Coulomb repulsion parameter also known as Hubbard U, based electronic structure calculations confirm that Zn doping constructively modifies the electronic structure, in both the valence band and the conduction band, and found to be suitable in tailoring the carrier’s effective masses of electrons and holes. The decrease in electron’s effective masses together with large differences between the effective masses of electrons and holes is noticed, which is found to be mainly responsible for achieving the best water-splitting performance from a 9% Zn-doped NiO sample prepared under vacuum."}],"external_id":{"isi":["001138342900001"]}},{"publication":"Chemical Engineering Science","citation":{"ama":"Yao Z, Liu X, Bunting R, Wang J. Despite a multitude of studies, the major mechanisms and key intermediates involved in the dehydrogenation process of formic acid remain a great topic of debate due to ambiguous adsorbate interactions. In this research, we develop an advanced microkinetic model based on first-principles calculations, accounting for adsorbate–adsorbate interactions. Our study unveils a comprehensive mechanism for the Pd (1 1 1) surface, highlighting the significance of coverage effects in formic acid dehydrogenation. Our findings unequivocally demonstrate that H coverage on the Pd (1 1 1) surface renders formic acid more susceptible to decompose into H2 and CO2 through COOH intermediates. Consistent with experimental results, the selectivity of H2 in the decomposition of formic acid on the Pd (1 1 1) surface approaches 100 %. Considering the influence of H coverage, our kinetic analysis aligns perfectly with experimental values at a temperature of 373 K."}],"author":[{"last_name":"Yao","full_name":"Yao, Zihao","first_name":"Zihao"},{"first_name":"Xu","full_name":"Liu, Xu","last_name":"Liu"},{"orcid":"0000-0001-6928-074X","id":"91deeae8-1207-11ec-b130-c194ad5b50c6","first_name":"Rhys","full_name":"Bunting, Rhys","last_name":"Bunting"},{"last_name":"Wang","full_name":"Wang, Jianguo","first_name":"Jianguo"}],"doi":"10.1016/j.ces.2024.119959","publication_status":"published","date_created":"2024-03-17T23:00:57Z","article_processing_charge":"No","oa_version":"None","publication_identifier":{"issn":["0009-2509"]},"publisher":"Elsevier","supplementarymaterial":"yes","_id":"15114","title":"Unravelling the reaction mechanism for H2 production via formic acid decomposition over Pd: Coverage-dependent microkinetic modeling","article_type":"original","main_file_link":[{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ces.2024.119959","open_access":"1"}],"oa":1,"date_published":"2024-06-05T00:00:00Z","das_tickbox":"1","volume":291,"month":"06","dataavailabilitystatement":"Data will be made available on request.","department":[{"_id":"MaIb"}],"year":"2024","acknowledgement":"The authors acknowledge the financial support from the National Key Research and Development Project of China (2021YFA1500900, 2022YFE0113800), the National Natural Science Foundation of China (22141001, U21A20298), Zhejiang Innovation Team (2017R5203).","quality_controlled":"1","researchdata_availability":"upon request","OA_type":"free access","day":"05","date_updated":"2026-10-16T09:20:35Z","fulldoi":"https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ces.2024.119959","scopus_import":"1","status":"public","type":"journal_article"},{"volume":674,"month":"02","date_published":"2024-02-01T00:00:00Z","das_tickbox":"1","article_type":"original","title":"Ab-initio stability of Iridium based newly proposed full and quaternary heusler alloys","_id":"14652","supplementarymaterial":"no","publisher":"Elsevier","oa_version":"None","publication_identifier":{"issn":["0921-4526"]},"date_created":"2023-12-10T23:00:56Z","article_processing_charge":"No","publication_status":"published","doi":"10.1016/j.physb.2023.415539","author":[{"last_name":"Gupta","full_name":"Gupta, Shyam Lal","first_name":"Shyam Lal"},{"last_name":"Singh","orcid":"0000-0003-2209-5269","id":"12d625da-9cb3-11ed-9667-af09d37d3f0a","full_name":"Singh, Saurabh","first_name":"Saurabh"},{"last_name":"Kumar","full_name":"Kumar, Sumit","first_name":"Sumit"},{"first_name":"Unknown","full_name":"Anupam, Unknown","last_name":"Anupam"},{"last_name":"Thakur","full_name":"Thakur, Samjeet Singh","first_name":"Samjeet Singh"},{"first_name":"Ashish","full_name":"Kumar, Ashish","last_name":"Kumar"},{"first_name":"Sanjay","full_name":"Panwar, Sanjay","last_name":"Panwar"},{"last_name":"Diwaker","first_name":"D.","full_name":"Diwaker, D."}],"abstract":[{"text":"In order to demonstrate the stability of newly proposed iridium-based Ir2Cr(In,Sn) and IrRhCr(In,Sn) heusler alloys, we present ab-initio analysis of these alloys by examining various properties to prove their stability. Chemical changes that occur during each one of these steps render them performance determining. Particularly the purification steps, bypassed in conventional solid-state synthesis, are the cause for large discrepancies among similar solution-processed materials. In present work, the investigation focuses on a water-based surfactant free solution synthesis of SnSe, a highly relevant thermoelectric material. We show and rationalize that the number of leaching steps, purification solvent, annealing, and annealing atmosphere have significant influence on the Sn : Se ratio and impurity content in the powder. Such compositional changes that are undetectable by conventional characterization techniques lead to distinct consolidated materials with different types and concentration of defects. Additionally, the profound effect on their transport properties is demonstrated. We emphasize that understanding the chemistry and identifying key chemical species and their role throughout the process is paramount for optimizing material performance. Furthermore, we aim to demonstrate the necessity of comprehensive reporting of these steps as a standard practice to ensure material reproducibility.","lang":"eng"}],"author":[{"full_name":"Fiedler, Christine","first_name":"Christine","id":"bd3fceba-dc74-11ea-a0a7-c17f71817366","last_name":"Fiedler"},{"orcid":"0000-0003-4566-5877","id":"45D7531A-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","first_name":"Mariano","full_name":"Calcabrini, Mariano","last_name":"Calcabrini"},{"first_name":"Yu","full_name":"Liu, Yu","orcid":"0000-0001-7313-6740","id":"2A70014E-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","last_name":"Liu"},{"last_name":"Ibáñez","id":"43C61214-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","orcid":"0000-0001-5013-2843","full_name":"Ibáñez, Maria","first_name":"Maria"}],"external_id":{"isi":["001223768400001"],"pmid":["38623865"]},"ddc":["540"],"scopus_import":"1","pmid":1,"fulldoi":"https://doi.org/10.1002/anie.202402628","day":"17","date_updated":"2026-10-16T09:30:27Z","issue":"25","ec_funded":1,"project":[{"call_identifier":"H2020","name":"ISTplus - Postdoctoral Fellowships","grant_number":"754411","_id":"260C2330-B435-11E9-9278-68D0E5697425"},{"_id":"2564DBCA-B435-11E9-9278-68D0E5697425","name":"International IST Doctoral Program","grant_number":"665385","call_identifier":"H2020"},{"name":"HighTE: The Werner Siemens Laboratory for the High Throughput Discovery of Semiconductors for Waste Heat Recovery","_id":"9B8F7476-BA93-11EA-9121-9846C619BF3A"}],"has_accepted_license":"1","status":"public","type":"journal_article","department":[{"_id":"MaIb"}],"dataavailabilitystatement":"The data that support the findings of this study are available from the corresponding author upon reasonable request.","file":[{"content_type":"application/pdf","relation":"main_file","file_name":"2024_AngewChemieIntern_Fiedler.pdf","creator":"dernst","date_updated":"2025-01-09T09:12:07Z","file_size":16347226,"date_created":"2025-01-09T09:12:07Z","access_level":"open_access","file_id":"18797","checksum":"1572a0f4d2df55751761efeb2d11c7fc","success":1}],"year":"2024","OA_type":"hybrid","researchdata_availability":"upon request","quality_controlled":"1","acknowledgement":"ISTA and the Werner Siemens Foundation financially supported this work.
