Furthermore, we also consider the case of MLS and provide the first lower bound showing that its communication complexity is much worse than previously believed, i.e., it is very far from $ \\log(N) $.\r\nFinally, we also propose a variant of MLS which provably achieves the same security properties with a much lower communication cost.","lang":"eng"}],"year":"2026","corr_author":"1","status":"public","title":"Towards efficient secure group messaging","has_accepted_license":"1","publication_status":"published","file":[{"date_created":"2026-08-13T09:39:00Z","access_level":"open_access","creator":"mcuetono","content_type":"application/pdf","date_updated":"2026-08-19T11:36:46Z","file_size":1390255,"file_id":"22702","file_name":"2026_CuetoNoval_Miguel_Thesis.pdf","checksum":"d61beeb9a250a04396c2c61bbd0783aa","relation":"main_file"},{"content_type":"application/zip","creator":"mcuetono","date_created":"2026-08-13T09:39:01Z","access_level":"closed","date_updated":"2026-08-14T10:26:06Z","file_size":9923509,"file_name":"2026_CuetoNoval_Miguel_Thesis.zip","file_id":"22703","checksum":"4d6def422cc93a108faf5e5defc0f807","relation":"source_file"}],"tmp":{"name":"Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0)","image":"/images/cc_by_nc_sa.png","legal_code_url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0/legalcode","short":"CC BY-NC-SA (4.0)"},"_id":"22664","citation":{"apa":"Cueto Noval, M. A central puzzle has been the clear benefit of scaling architecture size and overfitting the training set in supervised learning tasks. This evidence, in apparent contradiction with classical statistical learning theory, pushed researchers to develop a new theory capturing the interplay between the algorithmic and architectural bias of training and the specific target function, differently from previous methods rooted in uniform stability.\r\nThis approach has enabled a grounded understanding of novel learning regimes, typically through formal limits where the number of training samples $n$, data dimensions $d$, and model parameters $p$ grow to infinity at different rates. \\\\\r\nIn this thesis, we follow this approach, focusing on the trustworthiness of high-dimensional models: properties that are difficult to control during training or deployment and often emerge under unpredictable or adversarial conditions. In such settings, it is crucial to formally ensure a priori the reliability of machine learning systems.\r\nFirst, we study data memorization, both as label fitting and as the storage of private information about training samples in trained parameters. We prove that $p = \\Omega(n)$ parameters are sufficient for a deep neural network to memorize a generic set of labels, and for a model to memorize spurious features across training data. We then give evidence that $p = \\Omega(dn)$ parameters are instead necessary for an adversary to reconstruct the full training set from the trained parameters.\r\nSecond, we study robustness, both to adversarial perturbations and to distribution shift. We first prove that $p = \\Omega(dn)$ parameters can be sufficient for a class of neural networks to overfit the training data while guaranteeing robustness to adversarial perturbations. Then, we focus on spurious correlations learning in high-dimensional regression, studying the effect of the ridge regularization parameter in the proportional regime $n = \\Theta(d)$, and connecting it via an equivalence argument to the role of over-parameterization $p = \\Omega(n)$ in neural networks. We also investigate the architectural bias of attention-based networks, showing that they are sensitive to the replacement of individual words in an embedded sentence, allowing them to generalize on sentences where the contextual meaning depends on one or few words.\r\nFinally, we study differentially private optimization in high-dimensional regimes. We prove that standard private gradient methods do not suffer in the over-parameterized regime $p = \\Omega(n)$, challenging the current wisdom based on stability-derived generalization bounds. We then consider linear regression in the proportional regime $n = \\Theta(d)$, showing that standard private gradient descent can achieve optimal rates under appropriate hyper-parameter scaling, such as sufficiently small gradient clipping constants, whose role is still debated in practice."}],"status":"public","title":"Trustworthy machine learning in high dimensions","corr_author":"1","acknowledgement":"This project was partially supported by the 2019 Lopez-Loreta prize,\r\nthe European Union (ERC, INF2\r\n, project number 101161364), the Austrian Science Fund\r\n(FWF) 10.55776/COE12, and a Google PhD fellowship in machine intelligence. We introduce Causal Inference GWAS, a graphical approach that selects genetic instruments from summary statistics controlling for linkage and pleiotropy, accommodates rare variants and binary outcomes, distinguishes direct from indirect risk factors in high dimensions, and flags latent confounding. Applied to 9 risk factors, 4 metabolic disease outcomes, and 8.4M variants across 458,747 UK Biobank individuals, our method runs in 20 minutes, identifying only 696 genome-wide valid instruments. We replicate nearly all previously reported risk factor-outcome paths, but find that most are indistinguishable from unmeasured confounding. PS1 has been attributed roles in intracellular calcium homeostasis in the brain, as well as in the pancreatic beta cells, where it has been shown to be fundamental for the initial phase of glucose-induced insulin secretion. To gain mechanistic insight into beta cell autonomous function of PS1, we have examined various beta cell models and found that PS1 controls glycolytic flux of pancreatic beta cells by regulating sub-mitochondrial Ca2+ homeostasis. Transient knock down of PS1 yielded a glycolytic bottleneck at the step catalyzed by glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase, resulting in defective glucose responsiveness. Moreover, we show that PS1 is needed for the preservation of beta cell identity, likely due to its role in glycolysis. Finally, we show that mouse islets from an in vivo model of AD mimic the defective glucose responsiveness seen in beta cells with transient PS1 knock down, while the identity loss and whole-body glucose homeostasis are not severely impacted, suggesting an adaptive response. Thus, the current work highlights beta cell autonomous role of PS1 and adds a layer of complexity in its impact on whole body metabolism."}],"dataavailabilitystatement":"The data supporting the findings of this research can be obtained from the authors upon a reasonable request; please refer to the author’s contributions for details regarding specific datasets. The ‘heavy-seed’ pathway eases the problem with the progenitors of these SMBHs having birth masses up to∼105 M\u0003. Here, we investigate the possibility that a local dwarf galaxy, Leo I, harbours a heavy-seed descendant. Using Monte Carlo merger trees to generate the merger histories of 1000 dark matter haloes similar to the Milky Way (MW), we search for Leo- like satellite haloes and investigate the probability that the progenitors of these satellites formed a heavy seed. We derive the likelihood of such ‘heavy-seed survivors’ (HSSs) across various formation and survival criteria as well as Leo-similarity criteria. We find that the virial temperature for the onset of atomic cooling and rapid gas infall that yields heavy seeds, Tact , has the largest impact on HSS frequency. We find HSSs in a fraction 0.7 per cent, 18.1 per cent, and 96.5 per cent of MW-like haloes when Tact is set to 9000, 7000, and 5000 K, respectively. For the canonical atomic-cooling threshold ( Tact \u0002 8000 K), the HSS fraction is\u0003 1per cent , indicating that Leo I hosting a heavy-seed descendant is unlikely under well-motivated physical assumptions. Higher HSS fractions occur only under optimistic and currently unsubstantiated assumptions on Tact . Nevertheless, these results motivate future work that clarifies the possibility of heavy-seed BH formation in pristine haloes with nominal virial temperatures below 8000 K. This may motivate Leo I as a target for disentangling heavy seeds from other SMBH formation mechanisms."}],"year":"2026","title":"Heavy black hole seed survivors in dwarf galaxies: A case study of Leo I","status":"public","acknowledgement":"We thank the anonymous reviewer for feedback that helped clarify this manuscript. In [S II], the number of detected filaments increases by about an order of\r\nmagnitude compared to previous studies. The imaging further reveals that the filaments are not smooth radial\r\nstreaks, but instead are composed of cascades of knots or clumps. The images in [O III] yield the first confirmation\r\nthat previously detected diffuse [O III] emission in fact originates from the same [S II] filaments. We measure a\r\nnebula center consistent with the position of the central star, indicating that the remnant has not received a large\r\ntransverse kick. The 3σ upper limit on the velocity of the stellar kick is ≲100 km s\r\n−1\r\n. Cross-sectional profiles of\r\nthe filaments in [S II] and [O III] show a central peak on top of a nebula background, the latter being likely due to\r\ndiffuse emission or unresolved filaments. The median [S II] width of 0.7 is slightly broader than the 0.50 seeing,\r\nproviding some evidence of partially resolved filaments and implying a characteristic knot diameter of ∼1016 cm.\r\nThe ≈1″ widths measured in [O III] are consistent with the poorer seeing of the oxygen images. The discovery of\r\nthis clumpy substructure provides a new observational constraint on models for the origin and evolution of the\r\nremarkable filamentary ejecta of Pa 30."}],"title":"Detection of knots in the type Iax supernova remnant Pa 30","status":"public","corr_author":"1","OA_place":"publisher","DOAJ_listed":"1","acknowledgement":"We thank Jim Fuller, SR Kulkarni, David Charbonneau, Paul Duffell, Abigail Polin, Miranda Pikus, Tony Piro, Lars Bildsten, Eliot Quartert, and Rob Fesen for helpful discussions. Applying ac driving to the junction has proven to be a viable and less invasive way to extract information about the few lowest harmonics of the CPR, by locating the integer and fractional Shapiro steps in the 𝐼⁢𝑉-curve of the driven junction. Here, we present an alternative driving-based method that allows to extract the full harmonic content of a CPR in a relatively noninvasive way, by fitting the measured critical currents of the driven junction as a function of driving power. We test our method, both using numerical simulations and in experiments, and we show that it works accurately.","lang":"eng"}],"title":"Fast-driving spectroscopy of current-phase relationships of individual Josephson elements","status":"public","acknowledgement":"The authors thank Afonso Oliveira, Stefano Calcaterra, Daniel Chrastina, and Giovanni Isella for providing the Ge/SiGe heterostructure. Rubin Observatory has now seen first light, and over a 10 year duration, Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) is projected to catalog tens of millions of quasars, many of which are expected to be associated with subparsec supermassive black hole binaries (SMBHBs). Out of these SMBHBs, up to thousands of relatively massive binary-quasars are expected to exhibit gravitational self-lensing flares (SLFs) that last for at least 20–30 days. We assess the effectiveness of the Lomb-Scargle (LS) periodogram and matched filters (MFs) as methods for systematic searches for these binaries, using toy-models of hydrodynamical, Doppler, and self-lensing variability from equal-mass, eccentric SMBHBs. We inject SLFs into random realizations of damped random walk (DRW) lightcurves, representing stochastic quasar variability, and compute the LS periodogram with and without the SLF. We find that periodograms of SLF+DRW light-curves do not have maximum peak heights that could not arise from DRW-only periodograms. On the other hand, the matched filter signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) can distinguish SLFs from noise even with LSST-like cadences and DRW noise. Furthermore, we develop a three-step procedure with matched filters, which can also recover injected binary parameters from these light-curves. We expect this method to be computationally efficient enough to be applicable to millions of quasar light-curves in LSST.","lang":"eng"}],"status":"public","title":"Self-lensing flares from black hole binaries. However, these DNA mimic foldamers have until now mainly consisted of a single repeat motif, like a poly(dA:dT) DNA duplex, and contained limited sequence information. Here, we introduce new monomers designed to display different chemical functionalities in the major groove of the DNA mimics. Four new Fmoc-protected amino acid monomers have been synthesized and incorporated into oligomers. Sixteen foldamer sequences were prepared on solid phase. Their conformation in solution and in the solid state and their conformational dynamics were investigated using NMR, circular dichroism, molecular modeling, and X-ray crystallography. The results show that three of four new monomers behaved as designed, and that their introduction enhances the conformational dynamics of the DNA mimic foldamers. In a fourth case, conformational behavior proved to be more complex than expected. The modified sequences retained an ability to bind to bacterial histone-like protein HU. These results showcase design strategies to manipulate large molecular biomimetics where not only side chains but also main chain components are varied. The new monomers pave the way to complex DNA mimic foldamer sequences targeting proteins that recognize sequence-selective DNA-binding proteins such as transcription factors or restriction enzymes.","lang":"eng"}],"dataavailabilitystatement":"CCDC 2514117, 2514118, 2286782 and 2478322 (compound 1, compound 1d, oligomer 5, and oligomer 6, respectively) contain the supplementary crystallographic data for this paper.54a–d \r\n\r\nThe supporting data have been provided as part of the supplementary information (SI). The degree of classicality is measured by a\r\nsmall parameter ε << 1. In this scaling the particle evolves on microscopic times, whereas\r\nthe field exhibits nontrivial dynamics only on the macroscopic scale t = O(ε^−2). The natural\r\nsemiclassical model is the coupled Schrödinger–Klein–Gordon (SKG) system, which\r\nencodes the time-scale separation through an explicit ε-dependence. Based on this scale separation\r\nin SKG, we apply the adiabatic principle to derive a new PDE for the classical field,\r\nthe ε-free adiabatic Klein–Gordon (aKG) equation, where the field is driven by the instantaneous\r\nground state of the particle. Our main result is a norm approximation of the Nelson\r\ndynamics by the aKGsolution corrected by a quasi-free fluctuation dynamics around the classical\r\nfield, generated by a renormalized Bogoliubov–Nelson Hamiltonian. As a corollary, we\r\nobtain convergence of the reduced one-body densities for both subsystems, where the fluctuation\r\ncorrection vanishes, thereby justifying aKG as a semiclassical Born–Oppenheimer\r\ntype approximation of the renormalized Nelson model."}],"supplementarymaterial":"yes","acknowledgement":"Morris Brooks gratefully acknowledges support from the ERC Advanced Grant CLaQS, grant agreement No. 834782. Several aspects, such as perception of suffering, time, perceived value of an animal, potential benefits of the research, and public opinion, might influence care for animals. The European Directive 2010/63/EU on the protection of animals used for scientific purposes has represented an advance in animal welfare standards and care. However, the question of how we care about animals in practice, and of why this debate is important to reflect on still exist. Therefore, we draw upon the case study of laboratory non-human primates, to illustrate how these tensions go from theory to practice. It illustrates the conflicts and emotions, by exposing the limitations of the standards and norms in the field. Asgard archaea, which are considered the closest known prokaryotic relatives of eukaryotes, potentially encode these functions within their large set of ‘eukaryotic signature proteins’3,4,5,6. The few cultivated members show a complex cell morphology, consisting of a central cell body from which several protrusions extend, filled with an actin-based cytoskeleton7,8. Here, live-cell microscopy of two organisms of the Lokiarchaea and Hodarchaea lineages7,9 showed that they dynamically and greatly change their cell shape on a minute time scale and grow and retract their extensive protrusions with a speed of 1.5–4.8 µm min−1, respectively. After adhering to a glass surface, cells use their protrusions to undergo active crawling motion. In the presence of selected actin inhibitors, however, the observed dynamics were arrested, suggesting a central role of actin in these processes. The observed cellular plasticity and motility are unique features among prokaryotes and might have been crucial for the emergence of the first eukaryotic cells that are thought to have formed through the association of a member of the Asgard archaea and an α-proteobacterium, the ancestor of mitochondria.","lang":"eng"}],"supplementarymaterial":"yes","acknowledgement":"This work would not have been possible without the technical support in cultivation from K. Existing cooperative verification schemes, however, typically require specialized interfaces or tight integration, limiting their practical applicability. In our International Conference on Software Engineering (ICSE) 2025 publication, we introduce dynamic program splitting – a novel approach that enables cooperation between off-the-shelf verification tools without requiring any modifications. The key idea is to probe verification tools on a given verification task under a time limit and split tasks dynamically that cannot be verified under the given time constraints. The process continues recursively, incrementally identifying program parts that are particularly hard for the given verifier. The remaining unverified parts are provided to a second verifier, allowing to leverage the complementary strengths of different tools. Our evaluation on SV-COMP benchmarks demonstrates that cooperation through dynamic program splitting enables the verification of tasks that none of the individual verifiers can solve on their own."}],"year":"2026","tmp":{"image":"/images/cc_by_sa.png","name":"Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International Public License (CC BY-SA 4.0)","short":"CC BY-SA (4.0)","legal_code_url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/legalcode"},"file":[{"file_id":"23170","success":1,"file_name":"2026_LNI_Richter.pdf","checksum":"3371c63711ed26efa41744834d337d28","relation":"main_file","date_created":"2026-10-19T08:39:37Z","access_level":"open_access","content_type":"application/pdf","creator":"dernst","date_updated":"2026-10-19T08:39:37Z","file_size":147208}],"has_accepted_license":"1","publication_status":"published","alternative_title":["Lecture Notes in Informatics"],"citation":{"ieee":"C. While nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is, in principle, ideally suited for such investigations, the absence of an amide proton precludes the use of conventional 1H–15N amide-detected experiments. 1H–13C-based approaches, though possible, remain challenging in large proteins. In this work, we present a selective labeling strategy that introduces an isolated 1H2δ–13Cδ–15N spin system in proline residues in otherwise deuterated proteins. The Solar System, with its rich population of distant comets, provides a natural laboratory to study these processes. We performed detailed numerical simulations using the LonelyPlanets framework that combines NBODY6++GPU and REBOUND to explore the evolution of debris disks around Solar System analogues embedded in stellar clusters. Two initial configurations are considered, the Extended model and the Compact model, each containing four giant planets and either an extended or compact debris disk. We find that compact disks primarily form Kuiper belt and scattered disk-like populations through planet–disk interactions, while extended disks are more strongly shaped by stellar encounters, producing Oort cloud-like structures and interstellar comets with ejection velocities of 1–3 km s−1. Stellar perturbations are most effective for encounter inclinations between 0° and 30°, giving rise to distinct dynamical populations, like Sednoids, and inner Oort cloud analogues, and a characteristic tail in semimajor axis-eccentricity space. In coplanar encounters, the disk remains largely flattened, whereas polar flybys redistribute angular momentum vertically, producing nearly isotropic outer populations that resemble an emerging Oort cloud. Our results suggest that cometary reservoirs and interstellar objects are natural byproducts of planet–disk interactions and stellar flybys in dense clusters, linking the architecture of outer planetary systems to their birth environments."}],"year":"2026","title":"Implications for the formation of Oort cloud-like structures and interstellar comets in dense environments","status":"public","corr_author":"1","OA_place":"publisher","acknowledgement":"We thank the referee for their suggestions and comments,\r\nwhich helped us improve the quality and clarity of the paper. AP3 is generally believed to localize to clathrin-free, ARF1-positive, elongated carriers in cells, but the architecture of AP3-based coats was unknown. Using in vitro reconstitution and cryo–electron tomography, we demonstrate that AP3:ARF1 spontaneously remodels membranes containing cargo and the phosphoinositide PI(3,5)P\r\n 2\r\n into tubular structures coated in spiraling rows of AP3 arches and ARF1 dimers. Targeted point mutations disrupting critical AP3:ARF1 and AP3:AP3 lattice interfaces disrupt AP3 recruitment, carrier formation, and lysosomal cargo trafficking in cells. We propose that AP3 generates tubular carriers on endosomes by organizing ARF1 dimers into elongated membrane-deforming arrays while simultaneously selecting cargo. By demonstrating that AP3:ARF1 can generate carriers without using a clathrin lattice, we explain the clathrin independence of AP3-mediated trafficking.","lang":"eng"}],"title":"Architecture of clathrin-independent AP3:ARF1-coated carriers","status":"public","acknowledgement":"We thank P.
