A binary hash code for a data point is obtained by a set of decision trees, setting ‘1’ for the visited tree leaf, and ‘0’ for the rest. We propose to first randomly group arriving classes at each tree split node into two groups, obtaining a significantly simplified two-class classification problem that can be a handled with a light-weight CNN weak learner. Code uniqueness is achieved via the random class grouping, whilst code consistency is achieved using a low-rank loss in the CNN weak learners that encourages intra-class compactness for the two random class groups. Finally, we introduce an information-theoretic approach for aggregating codes of individual trees into a single hash code, producing a near-optimal unique hash for each class. The proposed approach significantly outperforms state-of-the-art hashing methods for image retrieval tasks on large-scale public datasets, and is comparable to image classification methods while utilizing a more compact, efficient and scalable representation. This work proposes a principled and robust procedure to train and deploy in parallel an ensemble of light-weight CNNs, instead of simply going deeper.","lang":"eng"}],"date_updated":"2025-01-23T13:25:18Z","day":"09","date_created":"2024-10-09T07:47:30Z","volume":11206,"article_processing_charge":"No","type":"conference","publication_identifier":{"issn":["0302-9743"],"isbn":["9783030012151"],"eisbn":["9783030012168"],"eissn":["1611-3349"]},"title":"ForestHash: Semantic hashing with shallow random forests and tiny convolutional networks","date_published":"2018-10-09T00:00:00Z","scopus_import":"1","publication":"European Conference on Computer Vision","author":[{"full_name":"Qiu, Qiang","first_name":"Qiang","last_name":"Qiu"},{"last_name":"Lezama","full_name":"Lezama, José","first_name":"José"},{"first_name":"Alexander","id":"58f3726e-7cba-11ef-ad8b-e6e8cb3904e6","last_name":"Bronstein","full_name":"Bronstein, Alexander","orcid":"0000-0001-9699-8730"},{"last_name":"Sapiro","first_name":"Guillermo","full_name":"Sapiro, Guillermo"}],"_id":"18282","conference":{"end_date":"2018-09-14","start_date":"2018-09-08","location":"Munich, Germany","name":"ECCV: European Conference on Computer Vision"},"oa_version":"None"},{"type":"conference","article_processing_charge":"No","volume":11070,"date_created":"2024-10-09T07:47:49Z","abstract":[{"lang":"eng","text":"Cardiac ultrasound imaging requires a high frame rate in order to capture rapid motion. Several methods have been proposed in the medical ultrasound literature aiming at accelerating the image acquisition. In this paper, we consider one such method called multi-line transmission (MLT), in which several evenly separated focused beams are transmitted simultaneously. While MLT reduces the acquisition time, it comes at the expense of a heavy loss of contrast due to the interactions between the beams (cross-talk artifact). In this paper, we introduce a data-driven method to reduce the artifacts arising in MLT. To this end, we propose to train an end-to-end convolutional neural network consisting of correction layers followed by a constant apodization layer. The network is trained on pairs of raw data obtained through MLT and the corresponding single-line transmission (SLT) data. Experimental evaluation demonstrates significant improvement both in the visual image quality and in objective measures such as contrast ratio and contrast-to-noise ratio, while preserving resolution unlike traditional apodization-based methods. We show that the proposed method is able to generalize well across different patients and anatomies on real and phantom data.","lang":"eng"}],"fulldoi":"https://doi.org/10.1007/978-3-030-00129-2_17","volume":11074,"date_created":"2024-10-09T07:48:06Z","type":"conference","article_processing_charge":"No","title":"High quality ultrasonic multi-line transmission through deep learning","publication_identifier":{"eisbn":["9783030001292"],"eissn":["1611-3349"],"issn":["0302-9743"],"isbn":["9783030001285"]},"date_published":"2018-09-12T00:00:00Z","scopus_import":"1","publication":"First International Workshop, MLMIR 2018, Held in Conjunction with MICCAI 2018","author":[{"last_name":"Vedula","full_name":"Vedula, Sanketh","first_name":"Sanketh"},{"first_name":"Ortal","full_name":"Senouf, Ortal","last_name":"Senouf"},{"first_name":"Grigoriy","last_name":"Zurakhov","full_name":"Zurakhov, Grigoriy"},{"orcid":"0000-0001-9699-8730","id":"58f3726e-7cba-11ef-ad8b-e6e8cb3904e6","last_name":"Bronstein","first_name":"Alexander","full_name":"Bronstein, Alexander"},{"full_name":"Zibulevsky, Michael","last_name":"Zibulevsky","first_name":"Michael"},{"full_name":"Michailovich, Oleg","last_name":"Michailovich","first_name":"Oleg"},{"first_name":"Dan","full_name":"Adam, Dan","last_name":"Adam"},{"full_name":"Gaitini, Diana","first_name":"Diana","last_name":"Gaitini"}],"oa_version":"None","conference":{"start_date":"2018-09-16","end_date":"2018-09-16","name":"MLMIR: Workshop on Machine Learning for Medical Image Reconstruction","location":"Granada, Spain"},"_id":"18284","user_id":"3E5EF7F0-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","publication_status":"published","citation":{"ista":"Vedula S, Senouf O, Zurakhov G, Bronstein AM, Zibulevsky M, Michailovich O, Adam D, Gaitini D. 2018. This laborious task essentially requires expert knowledge of the system in order to discover the cause of the fault. In this context, we propose a new procedure that AIDS designers in debugging Simulink/Stateflow hybrid system models, guided by Signal Temporal Logic (STL) specifications. The proposed method relies on three main ingredients: (1) a monitoring and a trace diagnostics procedure that checks whether a tested behavior satisfies or violates an STL specification, localizes time segments and interfaces variables contributing to the property violations; (2) a slicing procedure that maps these observable behavior segments to the internal states and transitions of the Simulink model; and (3) a spectrum-based fault-localization method that combines the previous analysis from multiple tests to identify the internal states and/or transitions that are the most likely to explain the fault. To this end, we propose a new fully convolutional deep neural network architecture which is simple yet powerful and achieves state-of-the-art performance for additive Gaussian noise removal. Furthermore, we claim that the personal photo-collections can usually be categorized into a small set of semantic classes. However simple, this observation has not been exploited in image denoising until now. We show that a significant boost in performance of up to 0.4dB PSNR can be achieved by making our network class-aware, namely, by fine-tuning it for images belonging to a specific semantic class. Relying on the hugely successful existing image classifiers, this research advocates for using a class-aware approach in all image enhancement tasks.","lang":"eng"}],"publication_status":"published","fulldoi":"https://doi.org/10.1109/icip.2017.8296611","citation":{"ista":"Remez T, Litany O, Giryes R, Bronstein AM. 2018. Polymerization at the leading edge assembles the actin filament network and generates protrusion force. How this force is supported by the network and how the assembly rate is shared between protrusion and network retrograde flow determines the protrusion rate. We use mathematical modeling to understand experiments changing the F-actin density in lamellipodia of B16-F1 melanoma cells by modulation of Arp2/3 complex activity or knockout of the formins FMNL2 and FMNL3. Cells respond to a reduction of density with a decrease of protrusion velocity, an increase in the ratio of force to filament number, but constant network assembly rate. The relation between protrusion force and tension gradient in the F-actin network and the density dependency of friction, elasticity, and viscosity of the network explain the experimental observations. The formins act as filament nucleators and elongators with differential rates. Modulation of their activity suggests an effect on network assembly rate. Contrary to these expectations, the effect of changes in elongator composition is much weaker than the consequences of the density change. We conclude that the force acting on the leading edge membrane is the force required to drive F-actin network retrograde flow.","lang":"eng"}],"fulldoi":"https://doi.org/10.1091/mbc.e18-02-0082","date_updated":"2026-07-06T12:25:34Z","day":"01","volume":29,"date_created":"2019-02-14T12:25:47Z","license":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0/","tmp":{"image":"/images/cc_by_nc_sa.png","legal_code_url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0/legalcode","name":"Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0)","short":"CC BY-NC-SA (4.0)"},"article_processing_charge":"No","type":"journal_article"},{"date_created":"2020-09-21T12:01:50Z","doi":"10.1101/494088","year":"2018","ec_funded":1,"article_processing_charge":"No","type":"preprint","month":"12","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"user_id":"2DF688A6-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","department":[{"_id":"SiHi"}],"status":"public","day":"13","date_updated":"2026-07-06T12:52:50Z","publication_status":"submitted","abstract":[{"lang":"eng","text":"The cerebral cortex contains multiple hierarchically organized areas with distinctive cytoarchitectonical patterns, but the cellular mechanisms underlying the emergence of this diversity remain unclear. Here, we have quantitatively investigated the neuronal output of individual progenitor cells in the ventricular zone of the developing mouse neocortex using a combination of methods that together circumvent the biases and limitations of individual approaches. We found that individual cortical progenitor cells show a high degree of stochasticity and generate pyramidal cell lineages that adopt a wide range of laminar configurations. Mathematical modelling these lineage data suggests that a small number of progenitor cell populations, each generating pyramidal cells following different stochastic developmental programs, suffice to generate the heterogenous complement of pyramidal cell lineages that collectively build the complex cytoarchitecture of the neocortex."}],"fulldoi":"https://doi.org/10.1101/494088","citation":{"short":"A. We show that counting the periods of the jittery clock signal produces random numbers of significantly better quality than the methods in which the jittery signal is simply sampled (the case in almost all current methods). Moreover, we use the counter values to characterize and continuously monitor the source of randomness. However, instead of using the widely used statistical variance, we propose to use Allan variance to do so. There are two main advantages: Allan variance is insensitive to low frequency noises such as flicker noise that are known to be autocorrelated and significantly less circuitry is required for its computation than that used to compute commonly used variance. We also show that it is essential to use a differential principle of randomness extraction from the jitter based on the use of two identical oscillators to avoid autocorrelations originating from external and internal global jitter sources and that this fact is valid for both kinds of rings. Last but not least, we propose a method of statistical testing based on high order Markov model to show the reduced dependencies when the proposed randomness extraction is applied.","lang":"eng"}],"publication":"IACR Transactions on Cryptographic Hardware and Embedded Systems","scopus_import":"1","author":[{"last_name":"Allini","first_name":"Elie Noumon","full_name":"Allini, Elie Noumon"},{"last_name":"Skórski","id":"EC09FA6A-02D0-11E9-8223-86B7C91467DD","first_name":"Maciej","full_name":"Skórski, Maciej"},{"last_name":"Petura","first_name":"Oto","full_name":"Petura, Oto"},{"last_name":"Bernard","full_name":"Bernard, Florent","first_name":"Florent"},{"first_name":"Marek","last_name":"Laban","full_name":"Laban, Marek"},{"last_name":"Fischer","first_name":"Viktor","full_name":"Fischer, Viktor"}],"oa_version":"Published Version","_id":"10286","publication_identifier":{"eissn":["2569-2925"]},"title":"Evaluation and monitoring of free running oscillators serving as source of randomness","date_published":"2018-01-01T00:00:00Z","file_date_updated":"2021-11-15T10:27:29Z"},{"quality_controlled":"1","ddc":["570"],"ec_funded":1,"page":"3653-3658","doi":"10.1093/bioinformatics/bty340","year":"2018","citation":{"mla":"Usmanova, Dinara R., et al. “Self-Consistency Test Reveals Systematic Bias in Programs for Prediction Change of Stability upon Mutation.” Bioinformatics, vol. 34, no. 21, Oxford University Press, 2018, pp. 3653–58, doi:10.1093/bioinformatics/bty340.","chicago":"Usmanova, Dinara R, Natalya S Bogatyreva, Joan Ariño Bernad, Aleksandra A Eremina, Anastasiya A Gorshkova, German M Kanevskiy, Lyubov R Lonishin, et al. “Self-Consistency Test Reveals Systematic Bias in Programs for Prediction Change of Stability upon Mutation.” Bioinformatics. The utility of the prediction methods is affected by their accuracy and bias. Bias, a systematic shift of the predicted change of stability, has been noted as an issue for several methods, but has not been investigated systematically. Presence of the bias may lead to misleading results especially when exploring the effects of combination of different mutations.\r\n\r\nResults\r\nHere we use a protocol to measure the bias as a function of the number of introduced mutations. It is based on a self-consistency test of the reciprocity the effect of a mutation. An advantage of the used approach is that it relies solely on crystal structures without experimentally measured stability values. We applied the protocol to four popular algorithms predicting change of protein stability upon mutation, FoldX, Eris, Rosetta and I-Mutant, and found an inherent bias. For one program, FoldX, we manage to substantially reduce the bias using additional relaxation by Modeller. Authors using algorithms for predicting effects of mutations should be aware of the bias described here."}],"has_accepted_license":"1","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"month":"11","status":"public","department":[{"_id":"FyKo"}],"oa_version":"Published Version","_id":"5995","publication":"Bioinformatics","scopus_import":"1","author":[{"full_name":"Usmanova, Dinara R","last_name":"Usmanova","first_name":"Dinara R"},{"full_name":"Bogatyreva, Natalya S","last_name":"Bogatyreva","first_name":"Natalya S"},{"first_name":"Joan","full_name":"Ariño Bernad, Joan","last_name":"Ariño Bernad"},{"full_name":"Eremina, Aleksandra A","first_name":"Aleksandra A","last_name":"Eremina"},{"full_name":"Gorshkova, Anastasiya A","last_name":"Gorshkova","first_name":"Anastasiya A"},{"full_name":"Kanevskiy, German M","first_name":"German M","last_name":"Kanevskiy"},{"full_name":"Lonishin, Lyubov R","first_name":"Lyubov R","last_name":"Lonishin"},{"full_name":"Meister, Alexander V","last_name":"Meister","first_name":"Alexander V"},{"first_name":"Alisa G","full_name":"Yakupova, Alisa G","last_name":"Yakupova"},{"id":"44FDEF62-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","last_name":"Kondrashov","full_name":"Kondrashov, Fyodor","first_name":"Fyodor","orcid":"0000-0001-8243-4694"},{"orcid":"0000-0002-8224-4118","first_name":"Dmitry","id":"49FF1036-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","last_name":"Ivankov","full_name":"Ivankov, Dmitry"}],"external_id":{"pmid":["29722803"],"isi":["000450038900008"]},"date_published":"2018-11-01T00:00:00Z","file_date_updated":"2020-07-14T12:47:15Z","publication_identifier":{"eissn":["1367-4811"]},"title":"Self-consistency test reveals systematic bias in programs for prediction change of stability upon mutation"},{"publisher":"Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics","issue":"1","intvolume":" 50","file":[{"file_name":"2018_SIAM_Fischer.pdf","date_updated":"2020-07-14T12:46:22Z","file_id":"6992","checksum":"89a8eae7c52bb356c04f52b44bff4b5a","access_level":"open_access","creator":"dernst","content_type":"application/pdf","relation":"main_file","file_size":557338,"date_created":"2019-11-07T12:20:25Z"}],"article_type":"original","das_tickbox":"1","oa":1,"isi":1,"user_id":"2DF688A6-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","corr_author":"1","citation":{"mla":"Fischer, Julian L., and Günther Grün. “Existence of Positive Solutions to Stochastic Thin-Film Equations.” SIAM Journal on Mathematical Analysis, vol. 50, no. 1, Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, 2018, pp. 411–55, doi:10.1137/16M1098796.","chicago":"Fischer, Julian L, and Günther Grün. “Existence of Positive Solutions to Stochastic Thin-Film Equations.” SIAM Journal on Mathematical Analysis. The need for cryogenic systems increases the cost and complexity of the instruments, hindering the development of, among others, airborne and space applications. In this work, the nonlinear parametric upconversion of millimeter-wave radiation to the optical domain inside high-quality (Q) lithium niobate whispering-gallery mode (WGM) resonators is proposed for ultra-low noise detection. We experimentally demonstrate coherent upconversion of millimeter-wave signals to a 1550 nm telecom carrier, with a photon conversion efficiency surpassing the state-of-the-art by 2 orders of magnitude. Moreover, a theoretical model shows that the thermal equilibrium of counterpropagating WGMs is broken by overcoupling the millimeter-wave WGM, effectively cooling the upconverted mode and allowing ultra-low noise detection. By theoretically estimating the sensitivity of a correlation radiometer based on the presented scheme, it is found that room-temperature radiometers with better sensitivity than state-of-the-art high-electron-mobility transistor (HEMT)-based radiometers can be designed. This detection paradigm can be used to develop room-temperature instrumentation for radio astronomy, earth observation, planetary missions, and imaging systems.","lang":"eng"}],"day":"20","date_updated":"2026-07-07T06:22:34Z"},{"citation":{"short":"P.
