Rationalizing crystallization from water, and structure elucidation, of aromatic molecular and supramolecular systems is of general value across various fields of chemistry. Taking helical aromatic foldamers as a test case, we have validated several short polar side chains as efficient substituents to provide both solubility in, and crystal growth ability from, water. New 8-amino-2-quinolinecarboxylic acids bearing charged or neutral aminomethyl, carboxymethyl, sulfonic acid, or bis(hydroxymethyl)-methoxy side chains in position 4 or 5, were prepared on a multi gram scale. Fmoc protection of the main chain amine and suitable protections of the side chains ensured compatibility with solid phase synthesis. One tetrameric and five octameric oligoamides displaying these side chains were synthesized and shown to be soluble in water. In all cases but one, crystals were obtained using the hanging drop method, thus validating the initial design principle to combine polarity and rigidity. The only case that resisted crystallization appeared to be due to exceedingly high water solubility endowed by eight sulfonic acid functions. The neutral side chain did provide crystal growth ability from water but contributed poorly to solubility."}],"has_accepted_license":"1","status":"public","publication_status":"published","article_processing_charge":"No","oa_version":"Published Version","extern":"1","article_type":"original","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"publication":"Chemical Science","author":[{"first_name":"Xiaobo","full_name":"Hu, Xiaobo","last_name":"Hu"},{"first_name":"Simon J.","full_name":"Dawson, Simon J.","last_name":"Dawson"},{"id":"6a3def15-d4b4-11ef-9fa9-a24c1f545ec3","last_name":"Mandal","orcid":"0000-0001-5996-956X","first_name":"Pradeep K","full_name":"Mandal, Pradeep K"},{"last_name":"de Hatten","full_name":"de Hatten, Xavier","first_name":"Xavier"},{"first_name":"Benoit","full_name":"Baptiste, Benoit","last_name":"Baptiste"},{"first_name":"Ivan","full_name":"Huc, Ivan","last_name":"Huc"}],"fulldoi":"https://doi.org/10.1039/c7sc00430c","page":"3741-3749","title":"Optimizing side chains for crystal growth from water: a case study of aromatic amide foldamers","publication_identifier":{"issn":["2041-6520"],"eissn":["2041-6539"]},"issue":"5","license":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/3.0/","doi":"10.1039/c7sc00430c","date_updated":"2026-02-23T09:53:30Z","volume":8,"publisher":"Royal Society of Chemistry","citation":{"mla":"Hu, Xiaobo, et al. “Optimizing Side Chains for Crystal Growth from Water: A Case Study of Aromatic Amide Foldamers.” Chemical Science, vol. 8, no. 5, Royal Society of Chemistry, 2017, pp. 3741–49, doi:10.1039/c7sc00430c.","apa":"Hu, X., Dawson, S. The sequence was designed as an attempt to form a DNA four-way junction with A-type helical arms. However, in the presence of zinc, magnesium, and in the absence of any metal ion, it does not take up the junction structure, but forms an A-type double helix. This allowed us to study possible conformational changes in the double helix due to the presence of metal ions. Upon addition of the zinc ion, there is a change in the space group from P41212 to P41. The overall conformation of the duplex remains the same. There are small changes in the interaction of the metal ions with the DNA. In the zinc-bound structure, there are two zinc ions that show direct interaction with the N7 atoms of terminal G13 bases at either end of the molecule. There are small changes in the interhelical contacts. The consequence of these differences is to break some of the symmetry and change the space group."}],"publication_status":"published","status":"public","date_published":"2017-04-07T00:00:00Z","article_processing_charge":"No","oa_version":"None","extern":"1","publication_identifier":{"issn":["1525-7770"],"eissn":["1532-2335"]},"issue":"5","publication":"Nucleosides, Nucleotides and Nucleic Acids","author":[{"full_name":"Karthik, S.","first_name":"S.","last_name":"Karthik"},{"last_name":"Thirugnanasambandam","full_name":"Thirugnanasambandam, A.","first_name":"A."},{"id":"6a3def15-d4b4-11ef-9fa9-a24c1f545ec3","last_name":"Mandal","full_name":"Mandal, Pradeep K","first_name":"Pradeep K","orcid":"0000-0001-5996-956X"},{"first_name":"N.","full_name":"Gautham, N.","last_name":"Gautham"}],"fulldoi":"https://doi.org/10.1080/15257770.2017.1287378","title":"Comparison of X-ray crystal structures of a tetradecamer sequence d(CCCGGGTACCCGGG)2 at 1.7 Å resolution","page":"343-354","publisher":"Informa UK Limited","volume":36,"year":"2017","citation":{"chicago":"Karthik, S., A. However, most of the studies of this radiation were performed on simple periodic gratings, whose radiation spectrum exhibits a single peak and its higher harmonics predicted by a well-established dispersion relation. Here, we propose a method to shape the spatial and spectral far-field distribution of the radiation using complex periodic and aperiodic gratings. We show, theoretically and experimentally, that engineering multiple peak spectra with controlled widths located at desired wavelengths is achievable using Smith-Purcell radiation. Our method opens the way to free-electron-driven sources with tailored angular and spectral responses, and gives rise to focusing functionality for spectral ranges where lenses are unavailable or inefficient.","lang":"eng"}],"article_processing_charge":"No","oa_version":"Preprint","extern":"1","article_number":"061801","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"article_type":"original","oa":1,"quality_controlled":"1","day":"06","_id":"21558","type":"journal_article","user_id":"2DF688A6-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","date_created":"2026-03-30T12:22:47Z","intvolume":" 96","month":"12","main_file_link":[{"open_access":"1","url":"https://doi.org/10.48550/arXiv.1710.03719"}],"arxiv":1,"OA_type":"green","scopus_import":"1","external_id":{"arxiv":["1710.03719"]},"doi":"10.1103/physreva.96.061801","date_updated":"2026-04-15T11:46:22Z","publisher":"American Physical Society","volume":96,"year":"2017","citation":{"ieee":"R. They are enabled by a technique based on atomic layer deposition of titanium dioxide allowing for the fabrication of nanostructures with high fidelity. First, we demonstrate highly efficient metalenses with numerical aperture NA = 0.8 using the Pancharatnam-Berry phase approach. These metalenses can focus light into a diffraction-limited spot. They have efficiencies as high as 86% and provide high imaging resolution. Furthermore, by judicious design of the phase-shifting elements, we achieve a multispectral chiral metalens realized with a single metasurface layer. This chiral metalens can resolve both the chiral and spectral information of an object without the requirement of any additional optical components. Finally, we discuss the experimental realization of polarization-insensitive metalenses with NAs as high as 0.85. They are able to focus incident light to a spot as small as ~0.64λ with efficiencies up to 60%. Due to its straightforward and CMOS-compatible fabrication, this platform is promising for a wide range of applications ranging from camera modules, displays, laser-based imaging, microscopy, and spectroscopy to laser fabrication and lithography."}],"status":"public","publication_status":"published","date_published":"2017-05-01T00:00:00Z","article_processing_charge":"No","oa_version":"None","extern":"1","date_created":"2026-03-30T12:22:47Z","user_id":"2DF688A6-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","month":"05","intvolume":" 23","OA_type":"closed access","quality_controlled":"1","_id":"21569","type":"journal_article","day":"01","publisher":"Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers","volume":23,"year":"2017","citation":{"mla":"Khorasaninejad, Mohammadreza, et al. “Visible Wavelength Planar Metalenses Based on Titanium Dioxide.” IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Quantum Electronics, vol. 23, no. 3, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, 2017, pp. 43–58, doi:10.1109/jstqe.2016.2616447.","apa":"Khorasaninejad, M., Chen, W. This platform is based on atomic layer deposition of titanium dioxide and allows molding incident light wavefront to desired shapes including holographic images, optical vortices, and Bessel beams. The focus of this work will be on the design and demonstration of planar metalenses. We report on our recent experimental realization of high numerical aperture metalenses with efficiency as high as 86%. These metalenses can focus light into a diffraction-limited spot and can be employed for imaging purposes to provide sub-wavelength imaging resolution. In addition, by the judicious design of metalens building blocks, one can achieve a multispectral chiral metalens (MCML) within a single metasurface layer. The MCML can simultaneously resolve chiral and spectral information of an object without the requirement of additional optical components such as polarizers, wave-plates, or even gratings. Using this MCML, we map the chiroptical properties of a macroscopic chiral biological specimen across the visible range. Finally, since many applications require polarization insensitive planar lenses, we discuss the experimental realization of such metalenses with numerical apertures as high as NA=0.85. These metalenses can focus incident light to a spot as small as ~0.6lambda with efficiencies up to 70%. The straightforward and CMOS-compatible fabrication process of this platform is promising for a wide range of optics-based applications in multidisciplinary science and technology. In recent years the field of evolutionary computation has developed a rigorous analytical theory to analyse the runtimes of EAs on many illustrative problems. Here we apply this theory to a simple model of natural evolution. In the Strong Selection Weak Mutation (SSWM) evolutionary regime the time between occurrences of new mutations is much longer than the time it takes for a mutated genotype to take over the population. In this situation, the population only contains copies of one genotype and evolution can be modelled as a stochastic process evolving one genotype by means of mutation and selection between the resident and the mutated genotype. The probability of accepting the mutated genotype then depends on the change in fitness. We study this process, SSWM, from an algorithmic perspective, quantifying its expected optimisation time for various parameters and investigating differences to a similar evolutionary algorithm, the well-known (1+1) EA. We show that SSWM can have a moderate advantage over the (1+1) EA at crossing fitness valleys and study an example where SSWM outperforms the (1+1) EA by taking advantage of information on the fitness gradient.","lang":"eng"}],"has_accepted_license":"1","isi":1,"article_processing_charge":"No","tmp":{"short":"CC BY (4.0)","legal_code_url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/legalcode","name":"Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International Public License (CC-BY 4.0)","image":"/images/cc_by.png"},"date_created":"2018-12-11T11:51:27Z","user_id":"ba8df636-2132-11f1-aed0-ed93e2281fdd","intvolume":" 78","month":"06","quality_controlled":"1","_id":"1336","day":"01","type":"journal_article","oa":1,"volume":78,"publisher":"Springer","year":"2017","citation":{"short":"T. The approach allows programmers to program assuming a friendly, non-preemptive scheduler, and our synthesis procedure inserts synchronization to ensure that the final program works even with a preemptive scheduler. The correctness specification is implicit, inferred from the non-preemptive behavior. Let us consider sequences of calls that the program makes to an external interface. The specification requires that any such sequence produced under a preemptive scheduler should be included in the set of sequences produced under a non-preemptive scheduler. We guarantee that our synthesis does not introduce deadlocks and that the synchronization inserted is optimal w.r.t. a given objective function. The solution is based on a finitary abstraction, an algorithm for bounded language inclusion modulo an independence relation, and generation of a set of global constraints over synchronization placements. Each model of the global constraints set corresponds to a correctness-ensuring synchronization placement. The placement that is optimal w.r.t. the given objective function is chosen as the synchronization solution. We apply the approach to device-driver programming, where the driver threads call the software interface of the device and the API provided by the operating system. Our experiments demonstrate that our synthesis method is precise and efficient. The implicit specification helped us find one concurrency bug previously missed when model-checking using an explicit, user-provided specification. We implemented objective functions for coarse-grained and fine-grained locking and observed that different synchronization placements are produced for our experiments, favoring a minimal number of synchronization operations or maximum concurrency, respectively."}],"has_accepted_license":"1","status":"public","date_published":"2017-06-01T00:00:00Z","publist_id":"5929","language":[{"iso":"eng"}]},{"publisher":"American Chemical Society","volume":139,"year":"2017","citation":{"mla":"Sawczyk, Michał, and Rafal Klajn. “Out-of-Equilibrium Aggregates and Coatings during Seeded Growth of Metallic Nanoparticles.” Journal of the American Chemical Society, vol. 139, no. 49, American Chemical Society, 2017, pp. 17973–78, doi:10.1021/jacs.7b09111.","apa":"Sawczyk, M., & Klajn, R. Here, we identify the presence of ephemeral assemblies during seeded growth of gold nanoparticles. In this process, hydrazine reduces Au(III) ions, which attach to the existing nanoparticles “seeds”. The attachment is accompanied by a local increase in the concentration of a surfactant, which therefore forms a bilayer on nanoparticle surfaces, inducing their assembly. The resulting aggregates gradually disassemble as the surfactant concentration throughout the solution equilibrates. The lifetimes of the out-of-equilibrium aggregates depend on and can be controlled by the size of the constituent nanoparticles. We demonstrate the utility of our out-of-equilibrium aggregates to form transient reflective coatings on polar surfaces."}],"publication_status":"published","article_processing_charge":"No","oa_version":"None","extern":"1","keyword":["Colloid and Surface Chemistry","Biochemistry","General Chemistry","Catalysis"],"date_created":"2023-08-01T09:41:01Z","user_id":"2DF688A6-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","intvolume":" 139","month":"12","quality_controlled":"1","day":"01","_id":"13380","type":"journal_article"},{"external_id":{"pmid":["29074773"]},"pmid":1,"doi":"10.1126/science.aan6046","date_updated":"2024-10-14T12:15:38Z","scopus_import":"1","year":"2017","citation":{"ista":"Udayabhaskararao T, Altantzis T, Houben L, Coronado-Puchau M, Langer J, Popovitz-Biro R, Liz-Marzán LM, Vuković L, Král P, Bals S, Klajn R. 2017. Here, we show that non–close-packed nanoparticle arrays can be fabricated through the selective removal of one of two components comprising binary nanoparticle superlattices. First, a variety of binary nanoparticle superlattices were prepared at the liquid-air interface, including several arrangements that were previously unknown. Molecular dynamics simulations revealed the particular role of the liquid in templating the formation of superlattices not achievable through self-assembly in bulk solution. Second, upon stabilization, all of these binary superlattices could be transformed into distinct “nanoallotropes”—nanoporous materials having the same chemical composition but differing in their nanoscale architectures."}],"status":"public","publication_status":"published","extern":"1","oa_version":"Submitted Version","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"article_type":"original","oa":1,"type":"journal_article","_id":"13381","day":"27","quality_controlled":"1","intvolume":" 358","main_file_link":[{"open_access":"1","url":"https://repository.uantwerpen.be/docman/irua/8d722e/147242_2018_06_07.pdf"}],"month":"10","keyword":["Multidisciplinary"],"date_created":"2023-08-01T09:41:16Z","user_id":"2DF688A6-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87"},{"publication":"Chemical Society Reviews","author":[{"first_name":"Jan H.","full_name":"van Esch, Jan H.","last_name":"van Esch"},{"full_name":"Klajn, Rafal","first_name":"Rafal","last_name":"Klajn","id":"8e84690e-1e48-11ed-a02b-a1e6fb8bb53b"},{"first_name":"Sijbren","full_name":"Otto, Sijbren","last_name":"Otto"}],"fulldoi":"https://doi.org/10.1039/c7cs90088k","page":"5474-5475","title":"Chemical systems out of equilibrium","publication_identifier":{"issn":["0306-0012"],"eissn":["1460-4744"]},"issue":"18","scopus_import":"1","pmid":1,"external_id":{"pmid":["28884760"]},"doi":"10.1039/c7cs90088k","date_updated":"2024-10-14T12:15:48Z","publisher":"Royal Society of Chemistry","volume":46,"citation":{"ieee":"J. Both compounds bind strongly to the surfaces of magnetite nanoparticles. An adrenaline-derived DASA renders the particles insoluble in all common solvents, likely because of poor solvation of the zwitterionic isomer generated on the nanoparticle surfaces. Well-soluble nanoparticles were successfully obtained using dopamine-derived DASA equipped with a long alkyl chain. Upon its attachment to nanoparticles, this DASA undergoes an irreversible decoloration reaction owing to the formation of the zwitterionic form. The reaction follows first-order kinetics and proceeds more rapidly on large nanoparticles. Interestingly, decoloration can be suppressed in the presence of free DASA molecules in solution or at high nanoparticle concentrations."}],"extern":"1","oa_version":"None","publication_identifier":{"eissn":["2367-0932"]},"issue":"5","fulldoi":"https://doi.org/10.1002/cptc.201700009","author":[{"first_name":"Johannes","full_name":"Ahrens, Johannes","last_name":"Ahrens"},{"last_name":"Bian","full_name":"Bian, Tong","first_name":"Tong"},{"last_name":"Vexler","first_name":"Tom","full_name":"Vexler, Tom"},{"last_name":"Klajn","id":"8e84690e-1e48-11ed-a02b-a1e6fb8bb53b","first_name":"Rafal","full_name":"Klajn, Rafal"}],"publication":"ChemPhotoChem","page":"230-236","title":"Irreversible bleaching of donor-acceptor stenhouse adducts on the surfaces of magnetite nanoparticles","citation":{"ieee":"J. Short-lived massive stars are generally considered as the main stellar sources. We examine the potential role of less massive stars that lose their envelope through interaction with a binary companion. Here, we focus on the role of metallicity (Z). For this purpose we used the evolutionary code MESA and created tailored atmosphere models with the radiative transfer code CMFGEN. We show that typical progenitors, with initial masses of 12 M⊙, produce hot and compact stars (~ 4 M⊙, 60–80 kK, ~1 R⊙). These stripped stars copiously produce ionizing photons, emitting 60–85% and 30–60% of their energy as HI and HeI ionizing radiation, for Z = 0.0001–0.02, respectively. Their output is comparable to what massive stars emit during their Wolf-Rayet phase, if we account for their longer lifetimes and the favorable slope of the initial mass function. Their relative importance for reionization may be further favored since they emit their photons with a time delay (~ 20 Myr after birth in our fiducial model). This allows time for the dispersal of the birth clouds, allowing the ionizing photons to escape into the intergalactic medium. At low Z, we find that Roche stripping fails to fully remove the H-rich envelope, because of the reduced opacity in the subsurface layers. This is in sharp contrast with the assumption of complete stripping that is made in rapid population synthesis simulations, which are widely used to simulate the binary progenitors of supernovae and gravitational waves. Finally, we discuss the urgency to increase the observed sample of stripped stars to test these models and we discuss how our predictions can help to design efficient observational campaigns.","lang":"eng"}],"date_published":"2017-12-01T00:00:00Z","article_processing_charge":"No","article_number":"A11","article_type":"original","language":[{"iso":"eng"}]},{"volume":601,"publisher":"EDP Sciences","year":"2017","citation":{"short":"E. We undertake a population synthesis study to compute the delay-time distribution of core-collapse supernovae, that is, the supernova rate versus time following a starburst, taking into account binary interactions. We test the systematic robustness of our results by running various simulations to account for the uncertainties in our standard assumptions. We find that a significant fraction, 15+9-8%, of core-collapse supernovae are “late”, that is, they occur 50–200 Myr after birth, when all massive single stars have already exploded. These late events originate predominantly from binary systems with at least one, or, in most cases, with both stars initially being of intermediate mass (4–8 M⊙). The main evolutionary channels that contribute often involve either the merging of the initially more massive primary star with its companion or the engulfment of the remaining core of the primary by the expanding secondary that has accreted mass at an earlier evolutionary stage. Also, the total number of core-collapse supernovae increases by 14+15-14% because of binarity for the same initial stellar mass. The high rate implies that we should have already observed such late core-collapse supernovae, but have not recognized them as such. We argue that φ Persei is a likely progenitor and that eccentric neutron star – white dwarf systems are likely descendants. Late events can help explain the discrepancy in the delay-time distributions derived from supernova remnants in the Magellanic Clouds and extragalactic type Ia events, lowering the contribution of prompt Ia events. We discuss ways to test these predictions and speculate on the implications for supernova feedback in simulations of galaxy evolution."}],"date_published":"2017-05-01T00:00:00Z","article_processing_charge":"No","arxiv":1,"date_created":"2023-08-03T10:15:18Z","user_id":"2DF688A6-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","keyword":["Space and Planetary Science","Astronomy and Astrophysics"],"month":"05","main_file_link":[{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1051/0004-6361/201629685","open_access":"1"}],"intvolume":" 601","quality_controlled":"1","day":"01","_id":"13477","type":"journal_article","oa":1},{"month":"12","intvolume":" 54","date_created":"2018-12-11T11:51:32Z","user_id":"2DF688A6-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","tmp":{"short":"CC BY (4.0)","legal_code_url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/legalcode","name":"Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International Public License (CC-BY 4.0)","image":"/images/cc_by.png"},"oa":1,"type":"journal_article","_id":"1351","day":"01","corr_author":"1","quality_controlled":"1","publist_id":"5898","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"article_processing_charge":"No","isi":1,"status":"public","publication_status":"published","has_accepted_license":"1","abstract":[{"text":"The behaviour of gene regulatory networks (GRNs) is typically analysed using simulation-based statistical testing-like methods. In the model, weight parameters represent the gene interaction strength that may change due to genetic mutations. For a property of interest, we synthesise the constraints over the parameter space that represent the set of GRNs satisfying the property. We experimentally show that our parameter synthesis procedure computes the mutational robustness of GRNs—an important problem of interest in evolutionary biology—more efficiently than the classical simulation method. We specify the property in linear temporal logic. We employ symbolic bounded model checking and SMT solving to compute the space of GRNs that satisfy the property, which amounts to synthesizing a set of linear constraints on the weights.","lang":"eng"}],"date_published":"2017-12-01T00:00:00Z","oa_version":"Published Version","publication_identifier":{"issn":["0001-5903"]},"related_material":{"record":[{"status":"public","id":"1835","relation":"earlier_version"}]},"issue":"8","file_date_updated":"2020-07-14T12:44:46Z","pubrep_id":"649","ddc":["006","576"],"file":[{"date_created":"2019-01-17T15:57:29Z","file_name":"2017_ActaInformatica_Giacobbe.pdf","file_size":755241,"access_level":"open_access","content_type":"application/pdf","date_updated":"2020-07-14T12:44:46Z","relation":"main_file","file_id":"5841","creator":"dernst","checksum":"4e661d9135d7f8c342e8e258dee76f3e"}],"fulldoi":"https://doi.org/10.1007/s00236-016-0278-x","project":[{"_id":"25EE3708-B435-11E9-9278-68D0E5697425","call_identifier":"FP7","grant_number":"267989","name":"Quantitative Reactive Modeling"},{"_id":"25832EC2-B435-11E9-9278-68D0E5697425","call_identifier":"FWF","grant_number":"S 11407_N23","name":"Rigorous Systems Engineering"},{"_id":"25F42A32-B435-11E9-9278-68D0E5697425","call_identifier":"FWF","grant_number":"Z211","name":"Formal methods for the design and analysis of complex systems"},{"name":"Speed of Adaptation in Population Genetics and Evolutionary Computation","grant_number":"618091","call_identifier":"FP7","_id":"25B1EC9E-B435-11E9-9278-68D0E5697425"},{"call_identifier":"FP7","_id":"25681D80-B435-11E9-9278-68D0E5697425","name":"International IST Postdoc Fellowship Programme","grant_number":"291734"},{"grant_number":"250152","name":"Limits to selection in biology and in evolutionary computation","_id":"25B07788-B435-11E9-9278-68D0E5697425","call_identifier":"FP7"}],"author":[{"id":"3444EA5E-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","last_name":"Giacobbe","orcid":"0000-0001-8180-0904","first_name":"Mirco","full_name":"Giacobbe, Mirco"},{"last_name":"Guet","id":"47F8433E-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","full_name":"Guet, Calin C","first_name":"Calin C","orcid":"0000-0001-6220-2052"},{"last_name":"Gupta","id":"335E5684-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","first_name":"Ashutosh","full_name":"Gupta, Ashutosh"},{"full_name":"Henzinger, Thomas A","orcid":"0000−0002−2985−7724","first_name":"Thomas A","id":"40876CD8-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","last_name":"Henzinger"},{"last_name":"Paixao","id":"2C5658E6-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","orcid":"0000-0003-2361-3953","first_name":"Tiago","full_name":"Paixao, Tiago"},{"first_name":"Tatjana","orcid":"0000-0002-9041-0905","full_name":"Petrov, Tatjana","id":"3D5811FC-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","last_name":"Petrov"}],"publication":"Acta Informatica","title":"Model checking the evolution of gene regulatory networks","page":"765 - 787","department":[{"_id":"ToHe"},{"_id":"CaGu"},{"_id":"NiBa"}],"citation":{"apa":"Giacobbe, M., Guet, C. Adaptive models provide an essential solution to these efficiency goals. These models are able to self-adapt in space and time, attempting to provide the best possible compromise between accuracy and speed. This survey reviews the adaptive solutions proposed so far in computer graphics. Models are classified according to the strategy they use for adaptation, from time-stepping and freezing techniques to geometric adaptivity in the form of structured grids, meshes and particles. Applications range from fluids, through deformable bodies, to articulated solids.","lang":"eng"}],"publication_status":"published","date_published":"2017-09-01T00:00:00Z","oa_version":"Submitted Version","publication_identifier":{"issn":["01677055"]},"issue":"6","file_date_updated":"2020-07-14T12:44:47Z","acknowledgement":"This work was partly supported by the starting grants ADAPT and BigSplash, as well as the advanced grant EXPRESSIVE from the European Research Council (ERC-2012-StG_20111012, ERC-2014-StG_638176 and ERC-2011-ADG_20110209).","ddc":["000"],"pubrep_id":"634","file":[{"content_type":"application/pdf","relation":"main_file","file_id":"5208","creator":"system","date_updated":"2020-07-14T12:44:47Z","checksum":"7676e9a9ead6d58c3000988c97deb2ef","access_level":"open_access","file_size":1434439,"date_created":"2018-12-12T10:16:21Z","file_name":"IST-2016-634-v1+1_starAdaptivity-cgf.pdf"}],"fulldoi":"https://doi.org/10.1111/cgf.12941","author":[{"first_name":"Pierre","full_name":"Manteaux, Pierre","last_name":"Manteaux"},{"id":"3C61F1D2-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","last_name":"Wojtan","first_name":"Christopher J","orcid":"0000-0001-6646-5546","full_name":"Wojtan, Christopher J"},{"first_name":"Rahul","full_name":"Narain, Rahul","last_name":"Narain"},{"full_name":"Redon, Stéphane","first_name":"Stéphane","last_name":"Redon"},{"last_name":"Faure","first_name":"François","full_name":"Faure, François"},{"full_name":"Cani, Marie","first_name":"Marie","last_name":"Cani"}],"publication":"Computer Graphics Forum","title":"Adaptive physically based models in computer graphics","page":"312 - 337","department":[{"_id":"ChWo"}],"year":"2017","citation":{"ista":"Manteaux P, Wojtan C, Narain R, Redon S, Faure F, Cani M. 2017.
