text: "The Galactic Be star binary MWC 656 was long considered the only known Be
star+black hole (BH) system, making it a critical\r\nbenchmark for models of massive
binary evolution and for the expected X-ray emission of Be+BH binaries. However,
recent dynamical measurements cast doubt on the presence of a BH companion. We
present new multi-epoch ultraviolet spectroscopy from the\r\nHubble Space Telescope,
combined with high-resolution optical spectra, to reassess the nature of the companion.
The far-ultraviolet\r\nspectra reveal high-ionisation features – including prominent
N v and He ii lines – which are absent in the spectra of normal Be stars\r\nand
are indicative of a hot, luminous companion. Spectral modelling shows that these
features cannot originate from the Be star or\r\nfrom an accretion disc around
a compact object. Instead, we find that the data are best explained by a hot (Teff
≈ 85 kK), compact,\r\nhydrogen-deficient star with strong wind signatures, consistent
with an intermediate-mass stripped star. Our revised orbital solution\r\nand composite
    spectroscopic modelling yield a companion mass of M2 = 1.48+0.55\r\n−0.46 M\f,
definitively ruling out a BH and disfavouring a\r\nwhite dwarf. MWC 656 thus joins
the growing class of Be + stripped star binaries. The system’s unusual properties
    – including a high\r\ncompanion temperature and wind strength – extend the known
parameter space of such binaries. The continued absence of confirmed\r\nOBe+BH
binaries in the Galaxy highlights a growing tension with population synthesis
    models."

text: Stellar wind mass loss of massive stars is often assumed to depend on their
metallicity Z. Therefore, evolutionary models predict that massive stars in lower-Z
environments are able to retain more of their hydrogen-rich layers and evolve
into brighter cool supergiants (cool SGs; Teff < 7 kK). Surprisingly, in galaxies
in the metallicity range 0.2 ≲ Z/Z⊙ ≲ 1.5, previous studies have not found a metallicity
dependence on the upper luminosity limit Lmax of cool SGs. Here, we add four galaxies
to the sample studied for this purpose with data from the Hubble Space Telescope
and the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). Observations of the extremely metal-poor
dwarf galaxy I Zw 18 from JWST allow us to extend the studied metallicity range
down to Z/Z⊙ ≈ 1/40. For cool SGs in all studied galaxies, including I Zw 18,
we find a constant value of Lmax ≈ 105.6 L⊙, similar to literature results for
    0.2 ≲ Z/Z⊙ ≲ 1.5. In I Zw 18 and the other studied galaxies, the presence of Wolf-Rayet
stars has been previously inferred. Although we cannot rule out that some of them
become intermediate-temperature objects, this paints a picture in which evolved
stars with L > 105.6 L⊙ burn helium as hot, helium-rich stars down to extremely
low metallicity. We argue that metallicity-independent late-phase mass loss would
be the most likely mechanism responsible for this. Regardless of the exact stripping
mechanism (winds or, for example, binary interaction), for the Early Universe
our results imply a limitation on black hole masses and a contribution of stars
born with M ≳ 30 M⊙ to its surprisingly strong nitrogen enrichment. We propose
a scenario in which single stars at low metallicity emit sufficiently hard ionizing
radiation to produce He II and C IV lines. In this scenario, late-phase metallicity-independent
mass loss produces hot, helium-rich stars. Due to the well-understood metallicity
dependence on the radiation-driven winds of hot stars, a window of opportunity
would open below 0.2 Z⊙, where self-stripped helium-rich stars can exist without
dense Wolf-Rayet winds that absorb hard ionizing radiation.

text: 'The massive binary common envelope (CE) phase plays a pivotal role in the
formation of close black hole (BH)/neutron star binaries, yet significant uncertainties
remain in our understanding of this process. In this study, we aim to constrain
the massive binary CE phase by systematically reconstructing three observed BH
    X-ray binaries (BHXBs): GRO J1655-40, SAX J1819.3-2525, and 4U 1543-47. Through
comprehensive binary evolution simulations and parametric supernova modeling,
we establish lower limits for the CE efficiency parameters under different energy
considerations within the standard energy formalism. Specifically, we derive minimum
values for three cases: α0.5U and αU, representing CE efficiencies with half and
all of the internal energy contributing to the envelope ejection, respectively,
and αH, accounting for the envelope’s enthalpy. Our analysis reveals that the
self-consistent formation of these three BHXBs requires CE efficiency parameters
    satisfying α0.5U ≳ 6.7, αU ≳ 4.2, and αH ≳ 1.7. Notably, we find no viable solutions
with CE efficiency values below unity, even when considering the most extreme
scenarios, in which the envelope binding energy is significantly reduced through
enthalpy inclusion. Our results strongly imply that either additional energy sources
are required or the formalism itself must be revised. Furthermore, we quantitatively
assess the impact of BH natal kicks on our results. A key finding is that 4U 1543-47’s
formation requires substantial natal kicks (≳50 km s−1), as lower kick velocities
are incompatible with isolated binary evolution.'

text: The small nuclear RNA U4atac is a core component of the minor spliceosome.
In humans, homozygous or compound heterozygous point mutations in U4atac cause
rare developmental disorders, such as Roifman syndrome, characterized by growth
restriction, brain anomalies, and immune deficiency. To better define the pathophysiological
role of U4atac mutations, we here establish a model of minor spliceosome dysfunction
by generating a Drosophila melanogaster CRISPR/Cas9-induced U4atac mutant in the
highly conserved stem II region. U4atac homozygous mutants exhibit growth and
neurodevelopmental defects, immunodeficiency, and gastrointestinal symptoms. Using
bulk RNA-sequencing and functional assays, we reveal that mutations in U4atac
affect the splicing of a large set of transcripts involved in innate immunity,
hematopoiesis, and intestinal cell functions, including the Drosophila Janus kinase
(JAK) homolog hopscotch (hop). Importantly, U4atac deficiency reduces Hop expression
and causes Hop-related hematopoietic defects at the embryonic and larval stages.
Notably, we also observe reduced expression of Jak1 and attenuated activation
of downstream signaling in patients with Roifman syndrome. Thus, our work identifies
alterations of Jak signaling as part of the pathogenesis of RNU4atac-opathy.

text: "The element distinctness problem takes as input a list I of n values from
a totally ordered universe, where pairwise comparisons between values are allowed,
and the goal is to decide whether I contains any duplicates. It is a well-studied
    problem with a classical worst-case Ω(n log n) comparison-based lower bound by
Fredman [TCS'76]. At first glance, this lower bound appears to rule out any algorithm
more efficient than the naive approach of sorting I and comparing adjacent elements.
However, upon closer inspection, the Ω(n log n) bound is overly pessimistic. For
instance, if I contains n/2 identical elements, a median-finding algorithm will,
regardless of the input order, find a duplicate in linear time. This raises a
natural question: Are there comparison-based lower bounds for element distinctness
that are sensitive to the amount of duplicates in the input instance?\r\nTo address
this question, we derive instance-specific lower bounds. For any input instance
I, we represent the combinatorial structure of the duplicates in I by an undirected
graph G(I) that connects identical elements. Each such graph G is a union of cliques,
and we study algorithms by their worst-case running time over all inputs I' with
G(I') ≅ G. We establish an adversarial lower bound showing that, for any deterministic
algorithm \U0001D49C, there exists a graph G and an algorithm \U0001D49C' that,
    for all inputs I with G(I) ≅ G, is a factor O(log log n) faster than \U0001D49C.
Consequently, no deterministic algorithm can be o(log log n)-competitive for all
graphs G. We complement this with an O(log log n)-competitive deterministic algorithm,
thereby obtaining tight bounds for element distinctness that go beyond classical
worst-case analysis. Subsequently, we study the related problem of set intersection.
We show that no deterministic set intersection algorithm can be o(log n)-competitive,
and provide an O(log n)-competitive deterministic algorithm. We find it interesting
and surprising to discover tight O(log log n)-competitive bounds for element distinctness.
Moreover, we find the separation between element distinctness and the set intersection
    problem unexpected."

text: The medial habenula (MHb) is implicated in regulating emotional responses
to aversive events. Studies in zebrafish have identified a remarkable morphological
left–right asymmetry in the dorsal habenula (zebrafish equivalent of mammalian
MHb)-interpeduncular nucleus (IPN) pathway and its asymmetrical roles in behavior.
However, there is little evidence for structural or functional lateralization
in the mammalian MHb-IPN pathway. Here, we investigated the synaptic properties
of left- and right-MHb afferents to the IPN and their roles in the expression
of conditioned fear in mice. We found that each IPN neuron receives inputs from
both left and right MHb, but the left MHb-originating synapses exhibit lower release
probability and higher γ-aminobutyric acid type B receptor (GABABR)-mediated potentiation
compared to the right MHb-originating synapses. Interestingly, these asymmetrical
properties persist in the inversus visceral mutant mice with normal internal organ
laterality (situs solitus), but nearly disappear in those with reversed internal
organ laterality (situs inversus). Behaviorally, chemogenetic inhibition of cholinergic
neurons and conditional deletion of GABABR in the left, but not the right, MHb
significantly attenuated cue-dependent fear recall. Our results demonstrate functional
asymmetry of the MHb under partial influence of the nodal flow in mice, revealing
a predominant role of GABABR-mediated signaling in the left MHb-IPN pathway in
modulating fear memories. These findings suggest that lateralized MHb pathways
could represent a fundamental principle in the neural regulation of emotion across
species but that they develop differently in zebrafish and mice.

text: "We study the sensitivity of the eigenvectors of random matrices, showing
that even small perturbations make the eigenvectors almost orthogonal. More precisely,
we consider two deformed Wigner matrices \U0001D44A +\U0001D4371, \U0001D44A +\U0001D4372
and show that their bulk eigenvectors become asymptotically orthogonal as soon
as Tr⁡(\U0001D4371−\U0001D4372)2 ≫1, or their respective energies are separated
on a scale much bigger than the local eigenvalue spacing. Furthermore, we show
that quadratic forms of eigenvectors of \U0001D44A +\U0001D4371, \U0001D44A +\U0001D4372
with any deterministic matrix \U0001D434 ∈\U0001D402\U0001D441×\U0001D441 in a
specific subspace of codimension one are of size \U0001D441−1/2. This proves a
generalization of the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis to eigenvectors belonging
    to two different spectral families."

text: Adeno-associated viruses (AAVs) provide a versatile tool for labeling neurons
in the Xenopus central nervous system across developmental stages. AAV-mediated
transgene expression is long-lasting and stable, enabling robust labeling of neuronal
populations without genomic integration and without the need to generate transgenic
lines. The choice of AAV capsid and promoter can restrict expression to a population
of interest, and depending on the route and timing of delivery, AAVs can selectively
target either progenitor-derived neuronal cohorts or mature neuronal populations.
Here, we have outlined two labeling strategies. First, intraventricular injections
in tadpoles transduce neural progenitor cells lining the ventricular system, resulting
in cohort-based labeling of neurons as they differentiate during development.
Second, direct intraparenchymal injections in post-metamorphic frogs enable spatially
restricted labeling and anterograde or retrograde tracing of connectivity within
defined brain regions. Together, these approaches provide selective access to
developing and mature neural circuits in X. laevis, supporting applications ranging
from anatomical tracing to functional imaging and manipulation of neural circuits.

text: Hybridization Chain Reaction (HCR) enables highly sensitive and multiplexed
detection of mRNA with subcellular spatial resolution. It employs fluorophore-tagged
DNA hairpins that self-assemble on target-bound probe pairs, amplifying the signal
without enzymatic reactions. Here, we describe a protocol for performing HCR fluorescence
in situ hybridization (FISH) on Xenopus tissue sections. We also outline a semi-automated
image analysis pipeline that enables per-cell quantification of probe expression
and co-localization. This method provides a robust and quantitative approach for
visualizing gene expression patterns in situ.

text: Auxin and calcium (Ca2+) are central plant signals that coordinate growth,
development, and responses to environmental cues. Typically studied as largely
parallel pathways, they are now increasingly recognized as interconnected networks
whose activities converge at multiple regulatory levels. Recent advances in live
imaging, biosensors, optogenetics, and structural approaches have revealed that
auxin can rapidly trigger Ca2+ influx from the apoplast via TRANSPORT INHIBITOR
    RESPONSE1 (TIR1)/AUXIN-SIGNALING F-BOX (AFB)-dependent signaling mechanisms and
Ca2+ channels, presumably involving cyclic nucleotides produced by TIR1/AFB auxin
receptors. Conversely, Ca2+ signals arising from mechanosensing, wounding, and
environmental stress can modulate auxin transport, signaling, and transcriptional
outputs. Together, these discoveries highlight a dynamic, reciprocal signaling
axis where Ca2+ acts both downstream and upstream of auxin to shape growth, development,
    tropisms, and regeneration.

text: "We present the first truly subquadratic time algorithm to compute diameter
and eccentricities in real-weighted directed graphs with constant distance VC-dimension
and strongly sublinear-sized balanced separators. For real-weighted K_h-minor-free
digraphs, this runs in O(n^{2-1/(2h-2)} polylog(n)) time.\r\nPrior to this work,
truly subquadratic time computation of diameter was only known for real-weighted
planar graphs, while extensions to broader classes like minor-free graphs were
restricted to unweighted settings. In particular, existing algorithms that use
VC-dimension [Ducoffe, Habib, Viennot; SICOMP 2022] [Le, Wulff-Nilsen; SODA 2024]
[Chan, Chang, Gao, Le, Kisfaludi-Bak, Zheng; FOCS 2025] work with small integer
weights, but do not naturally generalize to real weights. We overcome this barrier
by introducing a randomized search-to-decision reduction, demonstrating that VC-dimension
is a sufficiently powerful tool in the real-weighted regime."

text: "We present deep ALMA Band 7 observations of the [O iii] 88 µm line and underlying
dust continuum\r\nemission in four UV-bright, gravitationally lensed (magnification
    µ = 1.4 − 3.8), JWST-selected\r\ngalaxies at z = 8.5 − 10.3, with observed magnitudes
    −22.5 ≲ MUV ≲ −20.5. [O iii] 88 µm is\r\nconfidently detected in UNCOVER-10646
    at z = 8.5080 ± 0.0011 (15σ) and DHZ1 at z = 9.3113 ±\r\n0.0006 (6σ), with both
    being intrinsically luminous systems [L[O iii] = (1.1− 1.6) ×109 L⊙] that follow\r\nthe
    local [O iii]-SFR relation. [O iii] 88 µm remains undetected in the two z > 10
    targets, including in\r\nthe z = 10.07 X-ray AGN UHZ1, where we obtain a deep
    limit of L[O iii] < 6 × 107 L⊙. Dust emission\r\nis not detected in any individual
    source nor in a stack (< 3σ). The high S/N [O iii] 88 µm detection\r\nin UNCOVER-10646
uniquely reveals an additional broad component (FWHM = 1366+473\r\n−329 km/s;\r\n∆BIC
≈ 20) indicative of an ionized outflow. We infer a high outflow rate of M˙\r\nout
    = 128+80\r\n−46 M⊙ yr−1\r\n,\r\ncorresponding to a mass loading factor η = M˙\r\nout/SFR
    = 2.9\r\n+1.8\r\n−1.0\r\nthat matches or exceeds theoretical\r\npredictions and
JWST-based studies of ionized outflows at high redshift. While high-resolution
ALMA\r\nfollow-up is required to confirm and spatially resolve the outflow, this
first systematic study at z > 8\r\nhighlights the unique diagnostic power of [O
iii] 88 µm in characterizing galaxies in the early Universe."

text: "Two-player games on graphs are a classical framework for analyzing strategic
decision making. In turn-based games, two players move a token along the edges
of the graph, and the right to move the token is determined by the current vertex.
In traditional bidding games - referred to as pure bidding games - the right to
move the token is determined at each step through bidding; here we consider Richman
bidding, where the winning player of a bid pays the losing player. The winner
is decided based on a temporal or quantitative specification evaluated over the
resulting infinite play.\r\nIn this work, we combine turn-based games and pure
bidding games into generalized bidding games, with player-1 vertices, player-2
vertices, and bidding vertices. This natural and simple generalization of bidding
games has far-reaching consequences. First, we show that, as a model, generalized
bidding games are more expressive than pure bidding games, and we provide several
applications. Second, and most importantly, we show that generalized Richman bidding
games are structurally equivalent to simple stochastic games, a well-studied model:
they are linearly interreducible to each other. As was previously known, the special
case of pure Richman bidding games corresponds to random-turn games. In other
words, generalized bidding games extend pure bidding games in the same way that
simple stochastic games extend random-turn games. We use this connection to solve
generalized Richman bidding games for temporal (parity) and quantitative (mean-payoff
and discounted-sum) specifications. From a computational perspective, we establish
that generalized bidding games with parity and mean-payoff specifications retain
the best known upper bounds for turn-based games and pure bidding games, namely
NP∩coNP.\r\nFinally, we study a repair problem that asks whether bidding vertices
can be assigned \"owners\" so as to bring the threshold budget required to win
the game below a given target. This problem has direct applications in compositional
policy synthesis for multi-objective settings, and we show it to be NP-complete."

text: 'Reachability is the most fundamental logical objective, yet it is notoriously
difficult to learn in reinforcement learning settings: even for Markov decision
processes, PAC learning of reachability is impossible without additional assumptions.
This difficulty also holds in turn-based stochastic games (TBSGs), where two adversarial
players interact on a finite state space. In this work, we consider turn-based
stochastic games with reachability objectives. For such settings, adversarial
learning, in which players are adversarial even in the learning phase, is impossible.
Therefore, the goal is to consider learning, in which both players learn the unknown
model together. In this spirit, previous literature on PAC learning in TBSGs considers
    (a) public information shared by both players; and (b) centralized learning, which
means that players share the same learning algorithm. In this work, our contribution
is two-fold. First, we relax these strong assumptions and ensure learning: (i)
with private information not shared with the other player; and (ii) decentralized
learning where the players do not share the same learning algorithm. To the best
of our knowledge, this work is the first positive result for decentralized and
private information learning of TBSGs with reachability objectives. Second, we
introduce a game-theoretic generalization of the Expected Conditional Distance
(ECD) parameter, which measures the expected length of reaching the target set.
We establish a polynomial-sample complexity bound with respect to the number of
states, actions, ECD parameter, and inverses of error tolerance and failure probability.'

text: "Given a weighted digraph G, a (t,g,μ)-DAG cover is a collection of g dominating
DAGs D_1,… ,D_g such that all distances are approximately preserved: for every
    pair (u,v) of vertices, min_id_{D_i}(u,v) ≤ t⋅ d_G(u,v), and the total number
of non-G edges is bounded by |(∪_i D_i)⧵ G| ≤ μ. Assadi, Hoppenworth, and Wein
[STOC 25] and Filtser [SODA 26] studied DAG covers for general digraphs. This
paper initiates the study of Steiner DAG cover, where the DAGs are allowed to
contain Steiner points. \r\nWe obtain Steiner DAG covers on the important classes
of planar digraphs and low-treewidth digraphs. Specifically, we show that any
digraph with treewidth tw admits a (1,2,Õ(n⋅tw))-Steiner DAG cover. For planar
digraphs we provide a (1+ε,2,Õ_ε(n))-Steiner DAG cover.\r\nWe also demonstrate
a stark difference between Steiner and non-Steiner DAG covers. As a lower bound,
we show that any non-Steiner DAG cover for graphs with treewidth 1 with stretch
    t < 2 and sub-quadratic number of extra edges requires Ω(log n) DAGs."

text: 'A heap is a dynamic data structure that stores a set of labeled values under
the following operations: pop returns the minimum value of the heap, Push(x_i)
pushes a new value x_i onto the heap, and DecreaseKey(i, v) decreases the value
    x_i to v. A working-set heap is a heap that supports the x_i ← pop() operation
in O(log Γ(x_i)) time where Γ(x_i) is the size of the working set: the number
of elements that were pushed onto the heap while x_i was in the heap. The goal
of working set heap design is to maintain the working set property while minimizing
the overhead of the Push and DecreaseKey operations. On a word RAM, there exist
working set heaps that support Push and DecreaseKey in amortized constant time.
In this paper, we show via a simple construction that pointer machines, one of
the most general and least-assuming computational models, support working set
heaps that support Push in amortized constant time and DecreaseKey in inverse-Ackermann
time. A by-product of this analysis is that Dijkstra’s shortest path algorithm
can be near-universally optimal on a pointer machine - incurring only an additive
O(m α(m)) overhead compared to the optimal running time for distance ordering,
where m denotes the number of edges in the graph.'

text: Solitons—localized wave packets that travel without spreading—play a central
role in understanding transport and properties of nonlinear systems. In quantum
many-body systems, however, such robust excitations are typically destroyed by
thermalization. Here, we theoretically demonstrate the existence of solitonic
excitations in high-energy states of Rydberg atom chains in the regime of strong
nearest-neighbor Rydberg blockade. These localized wave packets propagate directionally
atop a special class of reviving initial states related to quantum many-body scars
and are capable of carrying energy. Exhibiting long coherence times, these states
constitute a form of non-ergodic quantum dynamics and can be efficiently implemented
on Rydberg atom simulators. In this work, in addition to a phenomenological description
of solitons, we identify their counterpart in a classical nonlinear dynamical
system, demonstrate their potential use in quantum information transfer, and conjecture
their relevance for anomalous energy transport reported in numerical studies of
    Rydberg atom arrays.
