text: Mountainous running water ecosystems are vulnerable to climate change with
major changes coming from warming temperatures. Species distribution will be affected
and some species are anticipated to be winners (increasing their range) or losers
(at risk of extinction). Climate change vulnerability is seldom integrated when
assessing threat status for lists of species at risk (Red Lists), even though
this might appear an important addition in the current context. The main objective
of our study was to assess the potential vulnerability of Ephemeroptera (E), Plecoptera
(P) and Trichoptera (T) species to global warming in a Swiss mountainous region
by supplementing Species Distribution Models (SDMs) with a trait-based approach,
using available historical occurrence and environmental data and to compare our
outcomes with the Swiss National Red List. First, we used nine different modelling
techniques and topographic, land use, climatic and hydrological variables as predictors
of EPT species distribution. The shape of the response curves of the species for
the environmental variables in the nine modelling techniques, together with three
biological and ecological traits were used to assess the potential vulnerability
of each species to climate change. The joint use of SDMs and trait approach appeared
complementary and even though discrepancies were highlighted between SDMs and
trait analyses, groups of potential “winners” and “losers” were raised out. Plecoptera
appeared as the most vulnerable group to global warming. Divergences between current
threat status of species and our results pointed out the need to integrate climate
change vulnerability in Red List assessments.

text: "The Fiat-Shamir heuristic transforms a public-coin interactive proof into
a non-interactive argument, by replacing the verifier with a cryptographic hash
function that is applied to the protocol’s transcript. Constructing hash functions
for which this transformation is sound is a central and long-standing open question
in cryptography.\r\n\r\nWe show that solving the END−OF−METERED−LINE problem is
no easier than breaking the soundness of the Fiat-Shamir transformation when applied
to the sumcheck protocol. In particular, if the transformed protocol is sound,
then any hard problem in #P gives rise to a hard distribution in the class CLS,
which is contained in PPAD. Our result opens up the possibility of sampling moderately-sized
games for which it is hard to find a Nash equilibrium, by reducing the inversion
of appropriately chosen one-way functions to #SAT.\r\n\r\nOur main technical contribution
is a stateful incrementally verifiable procedure that, given a SAT instance over
n variables, counts the number of satisfying assignments. This is accomplished
via an exponential sequence of small steps, each computable in time poly(n). Incremental
verifiability means that each intermediate state includes a sumcheck-based proof
of its correctness, and the proof can be updated and verified in time poly(n)."

text: Urban heat islands (UHIs) exacerbate the risk of heat-related mortality associated
with global climate change. The intensity of UHIs varies with population size
and mean annual precipitation, but a unifying explanation for this variation is
lacking, and there are no geographically targeted guidelines for heat mitigation.
Here we analyse summertime differences between urban and rural surface temperatures
(ΔTs) worldwide and find a nonlinear increase in ΔTs with precipitation that is
controlled by water or energy limitations on evapotranspiration and that modulates
the scaling of ΔTs with city size. We introduce a coarse-grained model that links
population, background climate, and UHI intensity, and show that urban–rural differences
in evapotranspiration and convection efficiency are the main determinants of warming.
The direct implication of these nonlinearities is that mitigation strategies aimed
at increasing green cover and albedo are more efficient in dry regions, whereas
the challenge of cooling tropical cities will require innovative solutions.

text: Mountain ecosystems are experiencing rapid warming resulting in ecological
changes worldwide. Projecting the response of these ecosystems to climate change
is thus crucial, but also uncertain due to complex interactions between topography,
climate, and vegetation. Here, we performed numerical simulations in a real and
a synthetic spatial domain covering a range of contrasting climatic conditions
and vegetation characteristics representative of the European Alps. Simulations
were run with the mechanistic ecohydrological model Tethys–Chloris to quantify
the drivers of ecosystem functioning and to explore the vulnerability of Alpine
ecosystems to climate change. We correlated the spatial distribution of ecohydrological
responses with that of meteorological and topographic attributes and computed
spatially explicit sensitivities of net primary productivity, transpiration, and
snow cover to air temperature, radiation, and water availability. We also quantified
how the variance in several ecohydrological processes, such as transpiration,
quickly diminishes with increasing spatial aggregation, which highlights the importance
of fine spatial resolution for resolving patterns in complex topographies. We
conducted controlled numerical experiments in the synthetic domain to disentangle
the effect of catchment orientation on ecohydrological variables, such as streamflow.
Our results support previous studies reporting an altitude threshold below which
Alpine ecosystems are water‐limited in the drier inner‐Alpine valleys and confirm
that the wetter areas are temperature‐limited. High‐resolution simulations of
mountainous areas can improve our understanding of ecosystem functioning across
spatial scales. They can also locate the areas that are the most vulnerable to
climate change and guide future measurement campaigns.

text: 'The Bayesian weighted averaging (BWA) method is commonly used to integrate
over multi-model ensembles of climate series. This method relies on two criteria
to assign weights to individual outputs: model skill in reproducing historical
observations, and inter-model agreement in simulating future period. Observations
are generally thought to be relevant for correcting biases in model outputs in
the BWA framework. However, they concurrently may introduce unpredictable impacts
in the context of the downscaling process, in particular, when model output on
precipitation is of interest. Specifically, the posterior distribution may excessively
depend on few ‘outlier models’ being close to the observation, when all other
models fail to capture observation of the historical period—a common situation
for precipitation metrics. Another issue emerges for climates with very dry months:
the inclusion of observation in BWA may result in a significant spread of the
posterior distribution into the negative region. To address these problems, a
modified version of the BWA method that removes observations in the initial phase
of downscaling (computation of Factors of Change) and adds them in the estimation
of posterior distributions is explored in this work. Comparisons of simulation
results for the locations of Miami (FL), Fresno (CA), and Flint (MI) between the
modified BWA and the traditional BWA demonstrate consistent outcomes with regards
to the effect of observation in the Bayesian framework. Further, the modified
BWA approach generally reduces uncertainty, as compared to ‘simple averaging’
in the Bayesian context, which assigns equal weights to all model outputs.'

text: The increase in atmospheric CO2 in the future is one of the most certain projections
in environmental sciences. Understanding whether vegetation carbon assimilation,
growth, and changes in vegetation carbon stocks are affected by higher atmospheric
CO2 and translating this understanding in mechanistic vegetation models is of
utmost importance. This is highlighted by inconsistencies between global-scale
studies that attribute terrestrial carbon sinks to CO2 stimulation of gross and
net primary production on the one hand, and forest inventories, tree-scale studies,
and plant physiological evidence showing a much less pronounced CO2 fertilization
effect on the other hand. Here, we review how plant carbon sources and sinks are
currently described in terrestrial biosphere models. We highlight an uneven representation
of complexity between the modelling of photosynthesis and other processes, such
as plant respiration, direct carbon sinks, and carbon allocation, largely driven
by available observations. Despite a general lack of data on carbon sink dynamics
to drive model improvements, ways forward toward a mechanistic representation
of plant carbon sinks are discussed, leveraging on results obtained from plant-scale
models and on observations geared toward model developments.

text: "The time that rainfall takes to reach the outlet of a catchment as discharge
(transit time) is a fundamental and\r\nintegrated measure of catchment hydrological
processes and solute transport mechanisms. As such, many efforts\r\nhave been
dedicated to its understanding and quantification. However, defining and ranking
which factors,\r\ninternal and external to the system, control the distributions
of transit time is still an open challenge. Here, we\r\ndevelop a two-stage approach
to explore climate and topography controls on transit time, using a fully distributed
hydrological model coupled with a transport component. Specifically, we apply
the model to two\r\nsynthetic topographies under five observed climate regimes.
With this setup, water fluxes from two years of daily\r\nrainfall events are singularly
tracked across the catchments to then derive the distributions of transit time
and\r\nfraction of young water for each combination of topography and climate.
Results highlight a considerable\r\nvariability of transit times in all climates
and a pronounced effect of topography within a given climate. They\r\nfurther
reveal that for wet climates it is possible to define a curve describing water
transit time as a function of\r\ncumulative discharge that only depends on topographic
properties. On the contrary, in dry climates the variability of transit time and
young water fraction is much larger and not amenable to a simple summary. Despite\r\nsimplifications,
quantitative model-based inferences of transit time distributions are useful to
better understand\r\nhow climate and topography affect catchment functioning."

text: Exploring the effects of climate change on the hydrological response at the
local scale requires climate data at high spatial and temporal resolutions. This
is best achieved by generating downscaled ensembles of future climate variables
derived from climate models. For this purpose we present a methodology to re-parameterize
the AWE-GEN-2d model (Advanced WEather GENerator for a two-dimensional grid).
The model simulates key meteorological variables needed by hydrological models
and is particularly suitable to explore the effects of stochastic (natural) climatic
uncertainty, which is fundamental for hydrological applications, especially at
sub-kilometer and hourly scales. Factors of change for different climate statistics
are calculated from climate model simulations of present and future climates and
subsequently applied to the statistics derived from observations to re-parameterize
AWE-GEN-2d. The model abilities in generating an ensemble of future climate variables
for the transient period 2020–2089 is presented with examples of precipitation
and near-surface air temperature fields from hourly to multi-annual scales for
a small mountainous region in the Swiss Alps. The stochastic uncertainty is examined
for present and future periods and for spatial scales from the RCM scale (12-km,
daily) to 2-km demonstrating the potential use of AWE-GEN-2d outputs. At the RCM
scale, model results yield a small increase in annual precipitation (4%) which
is within the stochastic uncertainty range for present and future periods (7%).
At the fine scale of 2-km, the increase in annual precipitation can exceed the
stochastic uncertainty, but for less than 10% of the domain area. On the contrary,
changes in annual near-surface air temperature exceed stochastic uncertainty both
at the RCM and finer scales. Stochastic climate uncertainty was concluded to be
very similar when comparing present and future periods and 12-km and 2-km scales.
The benefits of using AWE-GEN-2d in hydrological climate change impact assessments
are finally discussed.

text: Present gaps in the representation of key soil biogeochemical processes such
as the partitioning of soil organic carbon among functional components, microbial
biomass and diversity, and the coupling of carbon and nutrient cycles present
a challenge to improving the reliability of projected soil carbon dynamics. We
introduce a new soil biogeochemistry module linked with a well‐tested terrestrial
biosphere model T&C. The module explicitly distinguishes functional soil organic
carbon components. Extracellular enzymes and microbial pools are differentiated
based on the functional roles of bacteria, saprotrophic, and mycorrhizal fungi.
Soil macrofauna is also represented. The model resolves the cycles of nitrogen,
phosphorus, and potassium. Model simulations for 20 sites compared favorably with
global patterns of litter and soil stoichiometry, microbial and macrofaunal biomass
relations with soil organic carbon, soil respiration, and nutrient mineralization
rates. Long‐term responses to bare fallow and nitrogen addition experiments were
also in agreement with observations. Some discrepancies between predictions and
observations are appreciable in the response to litter manipulation. Upon successful
model reproduction of observed general trends, we assessed patterns associated
with the carbon cycle that were challenging to address empirically. Despite large
site‐to‐site variability, fine root, fungal, bacteria, and macrofaunal respiration
account for 33%, 40%, 24%, and 3% on average of total belowground respiration,
respectively. Simulated root exudation and carbon export to mycorrhizal fungi
represent on average about 13% of plant net primary productivity. These results
offer mechanistic and general estimates of microbial biomass and its contribution
to respiration fluxes and to soil organic matter dynamics.

text: In this article we prove an analogue of a theorem of Lachaud, Ritzenthaler,
and Zykin, which allows us to connect invariants of binary octics to Siegel modular
forms of genus 3. We use this connection to show that certain modular functions,
when restricted to the hyperelliptic locus, assume values whose denominators are
products of powers of primes of bad reduction for the associated hyperelliptic
curves. We illustrate our theorem with explicit computations. This work is motivated
by the study of the values of these modular functions at CM points of the Siegel
upper half-space, which, if their denominators are known, can be used to effectively
compute models of (hyperelliptic, in our case) curves with CM.

text: We derive the Hasse principle and weak approximation for fibrations of certain
varieties in the spirit of work by Colliot-Thélène–Sansuc and Harpaz–Skorobogatov–Wittenberg.
Our varieties are defined through polynomials in many variables and part of our
work is devoted to establishing Schinzel's hypothesis for polynomials of this
kind. This last part is achieved by using arguments behind Birch's well-known
result regarding the Hasse principle for complete intersections with the notable
difference that we prove our result in 50% fewer variables than in the classical
Birch setting. We also study the problem of square-free values of an integer polynomial
with 66.6% fewer variables than in the Birch setting.

text: An upper bound sieve for rational points on suitable varieties isdeveloped,
together with applications tocounting rational points in thin sets,to local solubility
in families, and to the notion of “friable” rational pointswith respect to divisors.
In the special case of quadrics, sharper estimates areobtained by developing a
version of the Selberg sieve for rational points.

text: Rising atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration should stimulate biomass production
directly via biochemical stimulation of carbon assimilation, and indirectly via
water savings caused by increased plant water-use efficiency. Because of these
water savings, the CO2 fertilization effect (CFE) should be stronger at drier
sites, yet large differences among experiments in grassland biomass response to
elevated CO2 appear to be unrelated to annual precipitation, preventing useful
generalizations. Here, we show that, as predicted, the impact of elevated CO2
on biomass production in 19 globally distributed temperate grassland experiments
reduces as mean precipitation in seasons other than spring increases, but that
it rises unexpectedly as mean spring precipitation increases. Moreover, because
sites with high spring precipitation also tend to have high precipitation at other
times, these effects of spring and non-spring precipitation on the CO2 response
offset each other, constraining the response of ecosystem productivity to rising
CO2. This explains why previous analyses were unable to discern a reliable trend
between site dryness and the CFE. Thus, the CFE in temperate grasslands worldwide
will be constrained by their natural rainfall seasonality such that the stimulation
of biomass by rising CO2 could be substantially less than anticipated.

text: "The hydrological and biogeochemical response of rivers carries information
about solute sources, pathways, and transformations in the catchment. We investigate
long-term water quality data of 11 Swiss catchments with the objective to discern
the influence of major catchment characteristics and anthropic activities on delivery
of solutes in stream water. Magnitude, trends, and seasonality of water quality
samplings of different solutes are evaluated and compared across catchments. Subsequently,
the empirical dependence between concentration and discharge is used to classify
the solute behaviors.\r\nWhile the anthropogenic impacts are clearly detectable
in the concentration of certain solutes (i.e., Na+, Cl−, NO3, DRP), the influence
of single catchment characteristics such as geology (e.g., on Ca2+ and H4SiO4),
topography (e.g., on DOC, TOC, and TP), and size (e.g., on DOC and TOC) is only
sometimes visible, which is also because of the limited sample size and the spatial
heterogeneity within catchments. Solute variability in time is generally smaller
than discharge variability and the most significant trends in time are due to
temporal variations of anthropogenic rather than natural forcing. The majority
of solutes show dilution with increasing discharge, especially geogenic species,
while sediment-bonded solutes (e.g., total phosphorous and organic carbon species)
show higher concentrations with increasing discharge. Both natural and anthropogenic
factors affect the biogeochemical response of streams, and, while the majority
of solutes show identifiable behaviors in individual catchments, only a minority
of behaviors can be generalized across the 11 catchments that exhibit different
natural, climatic, and anthropogenic features."

text: "Enabling secure communication across distributed systems is usually studied
under the assumption of trust between the different systems and an external adversary
trying to compromise the messages. With the appearance of distributed ledgers
or blockchains, numerous protocols have emerged, which attempt to achieve trustless
communication between distrusting ledgers and participants. Cross-chain communication
(CCC) thereby plays a fundamental role in cryptocurrency exchanges, sharding,
bootstrapping of new and feature-extension of existing distributed ledgers. Unfortunately,
existing proposals are designed ad-hoc for specific use-cases, making it hard
to gain confidence on their correctness and composability.\r\nWe provide the first
systematic exposition of protocols for CCC. First, we formalize the underlying
research problem and show that CCC is impossible without a trusted third party,
contrary to common beliefs in the blockchain community. We then develop a framework
to evaluate existing and to design new cross-chain protocols. The framework is
based on the use case, the trust model, and the security assumptions of interlinked
blockchains. Finally, we identify security and privacy challenges faced by protocols
in the cross-chain setting.\r\nThis Systematization of Knowledge (SoK) offers
a comprehensive guide for designing protocols bridging the numerous distributed
ledgers available today. It aims to facilitate clearer communication between academia
and industry in the field."

text: Starting from a microscopic model for a system of neurons evolving in time
which individually follow a stochastic integrate-and-fire type model, we study
a mean-field limit of the system. Our model is described by a system of SDEs with
discontinuous coefficients for the action potential of each neuron and takes into
account the (random) spatial configuration of neurons allowing the interaction
to depend on it. In the limit as the number of particles tends to infinity, we
obtain a nonlinear Fokker-Planck type PDE in two variables, with derivatives only
with respect to one variable and discontinuous coefficients. We also study strong
well-posedness of the system of SDEs and prove the existence and uniqueness of
a weak measure-valued solution to the PDE, obtained as the limit of the laws of
the empirical measures for the system of particles.

text: Due to the importance of zero-shot learning, i.e. classifying images where
there is a lack of labeled training data, the number of proposed approaches has
recently increased steadily. We argue that it is time to take a step back and
to analyze the status quo of the area. The purpose of this paper is three-fold.
First, given the fact that there is no agreed upon zero-shot learning benchmark,
we first define a new benchmark by unifying both the evaluation protocols and
data splits of publicly available datasets used for this task. This is an important
contribution as published results are often not comparable and sometimes even
flawed due to, e.g. pre-training on zero-shot test classes. Moreover, we propose
a new zero-shot learning dataset, the Animals with Attributes 2 (AWA2) dataset
which we make publicly available both in terms of image features and the images
themselves. Second, we compare and analyze a significant number of the state-of-the-art
methods in depth, both in the classic zero-shot setting but also in the more realistic
generalized zero-shot setting. Finally, we discuss in detail the limitations of
the current status of the area which can be taken as a basis for advancing it.

text: Cell division, movement and differentiation contribute to pattern formation
in developing tissues. This is the case in the vertebrate neural tube, in which
neurons differentiate in a characteristic pattern from a highly dynamic proliferating
pseudostratified epithelium. To investigate how progenitor proliferation and differentiation
affect cell arrangement and growth of the neural tube, we used experimental measurements
to develop a mechanical model of the apical surface of the neuroepithelium that
incorporates the effect of interkinetic nuclear movement and spatially varying
rates of neuronal differentiation. Simulations predict that tissue growth and
the shape of lineage-related clones of cells differ with the rate of differentiation.
Growth is isotropic in regions of high differentiation, but dorsoventrally biased
in regions of low differentiation. This is consistent with experimental observations.
The absence of directional signalling in the simulations indicates that global
mechanical constraints are sufficient to explain the observed differences in anisotropy.
This provides insight into how the tissue growth rate affects cell dynamics and
growth anisotropy and opens up possibilities to study the coupling between mechanics,
pattern formation and growth in the neural tube.
