text: Cells in a developing embryo have no direct way of "measuring" their
physical position. Through a variety of processes, however, the expression levels
of multiple genes come to be correlated with position, and these expression levels
thus form a code for "positional information." We show how to measure
this information, in bits, using the gap genes in the Drosophila embryo as an
example. Individual genes carry nearly two bits of information, twice as much
as expected if the expression patterns consisted only of on/off domains separated
by sharp boundaries. Taken together, four gap genes carry enough information to
define a cell's location with an error bar of ~1% along the anterior-posterior
axis of the embryo. This precision is nearly enough for each cell to have a unique
identity, which is the maximum information the system can use, and is nearly constant
along the length of the embryo. We argue that this constancy is a signature of
optimality in the transmission of information from primary morphogen inputs to
the output of the gap gene network.

text: We report a procedure to prepare highly monodisperse copper telluride nanocubes,
nanoplates, and nanorods. The procedure is based on the reaction of a copper salt
with trioctylphosphine telluride in the presence of lithium bis(trimethylsilyl)amide
and oleylamine. CuTe nanocrystals display a strong near-infrared optical absorption
associated with localized surface plasmon resonances. We exploit this plasmon
resonance for the design of surface-enhanced Raman scattering sensors for unconventional
optical probes. Furthermore, we also report here our preliminary analysis of the
use of CuTe nanocrystals as cytotoxic and photothermal agents.

text: Morphology is a key parameter in the design of novel nanocrystals and nanomaterials
with controlled functional properties. Here, we demonstrate the potential of foreign
metal ions to tune the morphology of colloidal semiconductor nanoparticles. We
illustrate the underlying mechanism by preparing copper selenide nanocubes in
the presence of Al ions. We further characterize the plasmonic properties of the
obtained nanocrystals and demonstrate their potential as a platform to produce

text: The bottom-up assembly of nanocrystals provides access to a three-dimensional
composition control at the nanoscale not attainable by any other technology. In
particular, colloidal nanoheterostructures, with intrinsic multiphase organization,
are especially appealing building blocks for the bottom-up production of nanocomposites.
In the present work, we use PbTe-PbS as the model material system and thermoelectricity
as the paradigmatic application to investigate the potential of the bottom-up
assembly of core-shell nanoparticles to produce functional nanocomposites. With
this goal in mind, a rapid, high-yield and scalable colloidal synthetic route
to prepare grams of PbTe@PbS core-shell nanoparticles with unprecedented narrow
size distributions and exceptional composition control is detailed. PbTe@PbS nanoparticles
were used as building blocks for the bottom-up production of PbTe-PbS nanocomposites
with tuned composition. In such PbTe-PbS nanocomposites, synergistic nanocrystal
doping effects result in up to 10-fold higher electrical conductivities than in
pure PbTe and PbS nanomaterials. At the same time, the acoustic impedance mismatch
between PbTe and PbS phases and a partial phase alloying provide PbTe-PbS nanocomposites
with strongly reduced thermal conductivities. As a result, record thermoelectric
figures of merit (ZT) of ∼1.1 were obtained from undoped PbTe and PbS phases at
710 K. These high ZT values prove the potential of the proposed processes to produce
efficient functional nanomaterials with programmable properties. © 2013 American

text: Copper-based selenides are attracting increasing interest due to their outstanding
optoelectronic and thermoelectric properties. Herein a novel colloidal synthetic
route to prepare Cu2SnSe3 nanocrystals with controlled size, shape and composition
is presented. The high yield of the developed procedure allowed its up-scaling
to the production of grams of colloidal Cu2SnSe3 nanocrystals. These nanocrystals
were used as building blocks for the production of Cu2SnSe3 bulk nanostructured
materials by spark plasma sintering. The thermoelectric properties of the prepared
nanocrystalline Cu2SnSe3 pellets were characterized in the temperature range from
300 to 720 K. The obtained results show the bottom-up production of nanocrystalline
materials from solution-processed nanocrystals to be a potentially advantageous
alternative to conventional methods of production of efficient thermoelectric
materials.

text: 'A multistrategy approach to overcome the main challenges of nanoparticle-based
solution-processed Cu2ZnSnSe4 thin film solar cells is presented. We developed
an efficient ligand exchange strategy, using an antimony salt, to displace organic
ligands from the surface of Cu 2ZnSnS4 nanoparticles. An automated pulsed spray-deposition
system was used to deposit the nanoparticles into homogeneous and crack-free films
with controlled thickness. After annealing the film in a Se-rich atmosphere, carbon-free
and crystalline Cu2ZnSnSe4 absorber layers were obtained. Not only was crystallization
promoted by the complete removal of organics, but also Sb itself played a critical
role. The Sb-assisted crystal growth is associated with the formation of a Sb-based
compound at the grain boundaries, which locally reduces the melting point, thus
promoting the film diffusion-limited crystallization. '

text: The presence of organic ligands on the surface of colloidal nanoparticles
strongly limits their performance in technological applications where charge carrier
transfer/transport plays an important role. We use metal salts, matched with the
nanoparticle composition, to eliminate the surface organic ligands without introducing
extrinsic impurities in the final nanomaterial. The potential of the simple, general
and scalable processes presented here is demonstrated by characterizing the thermoelectric
properties of nanostructured Ag2Te produced by the bottom up assembly of Ag2Te
nanocrystals. A 6-fold increase of the thermoelectric figure of merit of Ag2Te
was obtained when organic ligands were displaced by AgNO3. The same procedure
can enhance the performance of nanocrystals and nanocrystal-based devices in a
broad range of applications, from photovoltaics and thermoelectrics to catalysis.

text: The compositional versatility of I2–II–IV–VI4 tetrahedrally-coordinated compounds
allows for accommodating their functional properties to numerous technological
applications. Among them, Cu2ZnSnSe4 is an emerging photovoltaic material and
Cu2CdSnSe4 displays excellent thermoelectric properties. The third compound of
this family, Cu2HgSnSe4, remains relatively unexplored. Herein, a synthetic route
to produce Cu2HgSnSe4 nanoparticles with narrow size distribution and controlled
composition is presented. Cu2HgSnSe4 nanoparticles were subsequently used as building
blocks to produce bulk nanocrystalline materials, whose thermoelectric properties
were analyzed. A very preliminary adjustment of the material composition yielded
Seebeck coefficients up to 160 μV K−1, electrical conductivities close to 104
S m−1 and thermal conductivities down to 0.5 W m−1 K−1.

text: Until recently, to prepare nanocrystals of a new material, scientists searched
their shelves for the appropriate molecular precursors, surfactants, and solvents.
They then optimized the reaction conditions for the atoms to self-assemble into
monodisperse nanocrystals (1). This approach is being replaced by a simpler strategy,
in which preformed nanocrystals serve as templates to produce nanoparticles with
a different composition through chemical transformation. On page 964 of this issue,
Oh et al. (2) report a powerful mechanism that allows the composition of oxide
nanoparticles to be transformed in solution and at low temperatures.

text: The development of a functional tissue requires coordination of the amplification
of progenitors and their differentiation into specific cell types. The molecular
basis for this coordination during myotome ontogeny is not well understood. Dermomytome
progenitors that colonize the myotome first acquire myocyte identity and subsequently
proliferate as Pax7-expressing progenitors before undergoing terminal differentiation.
We show that the dynamics of sonic hedgehog (Shh) signaling is crucial for this
transition in both avian and mouse embryos. Initially, Shh ligand emanating from
notochord/floor plate reaches the dermomyotome, where it both maintains the proliferation
of dermomyotome cells and promotes myogenic differentiation of progenitors that
colonized the myotome. Interfering with Shh signaling at this stage produces small
myotomes and accumulation of Pax7-expressing progenitors. An in vivo reporter
of Shh activity combined with mouse genetics revealed the existence of both activator
and repressor Shh activities operating on distinct subsets of cells during the
epaxial myotomal maturation. In contrast to observations in mice, in avians Shh
promotes the differentiation of both epaxial and hypaxial myotome domains. Subsequently,
myogenic progenitors become refractory to Shh; this is likely to occur at the
level of, or upstream of, smoothened signaling. The end of responsiveness to Shh
coincides with, and is thus likely to enable, the transition into the growth phase
of the myotome.

text: 'Cells at different positions in a developing tissue receive different concentrations
of signaling molecules, called morphogens, and this influences their cell fate.
Morphogen concentration gradients have been proposed to control patterning as
well as growth in many developing tissues. Some outstanding questions about tissue
patterning by morphogen gradients are the following: What are the mechanisms that
regulate gradient formation and shape? Is the positional information encoded in
the gradient sufficiently precise to determine the positions of target gene domain
boundaries? What are the temporal dynamics of gradients and how do they relate
to patterning and growth? These questions are inherently quantitative in nature
and addressing them requires measuring morphogen concentrations in cells, levels
of downstream signaling activity, and kinetics of morphogen transport. Here we
first present methods for quantifying morphogen gradient shape in which the measurements
can be calibrated to reflect actual morphogen concentrations. We then discuss
using fluorescence recovery after photobleaching to study the kinetics of morphogen
transport at the tissue level. Finally, we present particle tracking as a method
to study morphogen intracellular trafficking.'

text: We report an electric-field-induced giant modulation of the hole g factor
in SiGe nanocrystals. The observed effect is ascribed to a so-far overlooked contribution
to the g factor that stems from the mixing between heavy- and light-hole wave
functions. We show that the relative displacement between the confined heavy-
and light-hole states, occurring upon application of the electric field, alters
their mixing strength leading to a strong nonmonotonic modulation of the g factor.

text: We report on hole g-factor measurements in three terminal SiGe self-assembled
quantum dot devices with a top gate electrode positioned very close to the nanostructure.
Measurements of both the perpendicular as well as the parallel g-factor reveal
significant changes for a small modulation of the top gate voltage. From the observed
modulations, we estimate that, for realistic experimental conditions, hole spins
can be electrically manipulated with Rabi frequencies in the order of 100 MHz.
This work emphasises the potential of hole-based nano-devices for efficient spin
manipulation by means of the g-tensor modulation technique.

each case, we follow the system for several thousand binary orbits, until it relaxes
to a stable accretion pattern. We find the following results: (i) the binary is
efficient in maintaining a low-density cavity. However, the time-averaged mass
accretion rate into the cavity, through narrow coherent accretion streams, is
suppressed by at most a factor of a few compared to a disc with a single BH with
the same mass; (ii) for q ≳ 0.05, the accretion rate is strongly modulated by
the binary, and depending on the precise value of q, the power spectrum of the
accretion rate shows either one, two or three distinct periods; and (iii) for
q ≲ 0.05, the accretion rate becomes steady, with no time variations. Most binaries
produced in galactic mergers are expected to have q ≳ 0.05. If the luminosity
of these binaries tracks their accretion rate, then a periodogram of their light
curve could help in their identification, and to constrain their mass ratio and
disc properties.'

text: We propose a novel use of high-redshift galaxies, discovered in deep Hubble
Space Telescope (HST) fields around strong lensing clusters. These fields probe
small comoving volumes (∼103 Mpc3) at high magnification (μ ≳ 10) and can detect
otherwise inaccessible ultra-faint galaxies. Even a few galaxies found in such
small volumes require a very high number density of collapsed dark matter (DM)
haloes. This implies significant primordial power on small scales, allowing these
observations to rule out popular alternatives to standard cold dark matter (CDM)
models, such as warm dark matter (WDM). In this work, we analytically compute
WDM halo mass functions at z = 10, including the effects of both particle free-streaming
and residual velocity dispersion. We show that the two z ≈ 10 galaxies already
detected by the Cluster Lensing And Supernova survey with Hubble (CLASH) survey
are sufficient to constrain the WDM particle mass to mx > 1 (0.9) keV at 68 per cent
(95 per cent) confidence limit (for a thermal relic relativistic at decoupling).
This limit depends only on the WDM halo mass function and, unlike previous constraints
on mx, is independent of any astrophysical modelling. The forthcoming HST Frontier
Fields can significantly tighten these constraints.

text: Pulsar timing arrays (PTAs) may eventually be able to detect not only the
stochastic gravitational-wave (GW) background of SMBH binaries, but also individual,
particularly massive binaries whose signals stick out above the background. In
this contribution, we discuss the possibility of identifying and studying such
'resolved' binaries through their electromagnetic emission. The host galaxies
of such binaries are themselves expected to be also very massive and rare, so
that out to redshifts z ≈ 0.2 a unique massive galaxy may be identified as the
host. At higher redshifts, the PTA error boxes are larger and may contain as many
as several hundred massive-galaxy interlopers. In this case, the true counterpart
may be identified, if it is accreting gas efficiently, as an active galactic nucleus
(AGN) with a peculiar spectrum and variable emission features. Specifically, the
binary's tidal torques expel the gas from the inner part of the accretion disc,
making it unusually dim in x-ray and UV bands and in broad optical emission lines.
The tails of the broad wings of any FeKα emission line may also be 'clipped' and
missing. The binary's orbital motion, as well as the gas motions it induces, may
trigger quasiperiodic variations. These include coherent flux variability, such
as luminous, multi-wavelength flares, as well as Doppler shifts of broad emission
lines and 'see-saw' oscillations in the FeKα line. Additional features, such as
evidence for a recent major merger or dual collimated jets, could also corroborate
the counterpart. These properties would make resolved PTA sources stand out among
AGN with similar overall luminosities and allow their identification.

text: Structures in Warm Dark Matter (WDM) models are exponentially suppressed below
a certain scale, characterized by the dark matter particle mass, mx. Since structures
form hierarchically, the presence of collapsed objects at high-redshifts can set
strong lower limits on mx. We place robust constraints on mx using recent results
from the {\it Swift} database of high-redshift gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). We parameterize
the redshift evolution of the ratio between the cosmic GRB rate and star formation
rate (SFR) as ∝(1+z)α, thereby allowing astrophysical uncertainties to partially
mimic the cosmological suppression of structures in WDM models. Using a maximum
likelihood estimator on two different z>4 GRB subsamples (including two bursts
at z>8), we constrain mx≳1.6-1.8 keV at 95% C.L., when marginalized over a flat
prior in α. We further estimate that 5 years of a SVOM-like mission would tighten
these constraints to mx≳2.3 keV. Our results show that GRBs are a powerful probe
of high-redshift structures, providing robust and competitive constraints on mx.

text: Observations of quasars at redshifts z > 6 reveal that 10^9 Msol supermassive
black holes (SMBHs) had already formed when the Universe was < 0.9 Gyr old. One
hypothesis for the origins of these SMBHs is that they grew from the remnants
of the first generation of massive stars, which formed in low-mass (~ 10^5 to
10^6 Msol) dark matter minihaloes at z > 20. This is the regime where baryonic
streaming motions--the relative velocities of baryons with respect to dark matter
in the early Universe--most strongly inhibit star formation by suppressing gas
infall and cooling. We investigate the impact of this effect on the growth of
the first SMBHs using a suite of high-fidelity, ellipsoidal-collapse Monte Carlo
merger-tree simulations. We find that the suppression of seed BH formation by
the streaming motions significantly reduces the number density of the most massive
BHs at z > 15, but the residual effect at lower redshifts is essentially negligible.
The streaming motions can reduce by a factor of few the number density of the
most luminous quasars at z ~ 10-11, where such objects could be detected by the
James Webb Space Telescope. We conclude, with minor theoretical caveats, that
baryonic streaming motions are unlikely to pose a significant additional obstacle
to the formation of the observed high-redshift quasar SMBHs. Nor do they appreciably
affect the heating and reionization histories of the Universe or the merger rates
of nuclear BHs in the mass and redshift ranges of interest for proposed gravitational-wave
detectors.

text: We present observations of a luminous galaxy at z = 6.573—the end of the reionization
epoch—which has been spectroscopically confirmed twice. The first spectroscopic
confirmation comes from slitless Hubble Space Telescope Advanced Camera for Surveys
grism spectra from the PEARS survey (Probing Evolution And Reionization Spectroscopically),
which show a dramatic continuum break in the spectrum at rest frame 1216 Å. The
second confirmation is done with Keck + DEIMOS. The continuum is not clearly detected
with ground-based spectra, but high wavelength resolution enables the Lyα emission
line profile to be determined. We compare the line profile to composite line profiles
at z = 4.5. The Lyα line profile shows no signature of a damping wing attenuation,
confirming that the intergalactic gas is ionized at z = 6.57. Spectra of Lyman
breaks at yet higher redshifts will be possible using comparably deep observations
with IR-sensitive grisms, even at redshifts where Lyα is too attenuated by the
neutral intergalactic medium to be detectable using traditional spectroscopy from
the ground.
