We show new global well-posedness results for a large class of scalar equations (e.g. the Allen-Cahn equation), and dissipative systems (e.g. equations in coagulation dynamics). Moreover, we prove global well-posedness for two weakly dissipative systems: Lotka-Volterra equations for d∈{1,2,3,4} and the Brusselator for d∈{1,2,3}. Many of the results are also new without transport noise. The proofs are based on maximal regularity techniques, positivity results, and sharp blow-up criteria developed in our recent works, combined with energy estimates based on Itô's formula and stochastic Gronwall inequalities. Key novelties include the introduction of new Lζ -coercivity/dissipativity conditions and the development of an Lp(Lq) -framework for systems of reaction-diffusion equations, which are needed when treating dimensions d∈{2,3} in the case of cubic or higher order nonlinearities.","lang":"eng"}],"researchdata_availability":"no","year":"2024","fulldoi":"https://doi.org/10.1137/23M1562482","corr_author":"1","oa_version":"Preprint","doi":"10.1137/23M1562482","intvolume":" 56","author":[{"orcid":"0000-0002-9573-2962","id":"673cd0cc-9b9a-11eb-b144-88f30e1fbb72","last_name":"Agresti","first_name":"Antonio","full_name":"Agresti, Antonio"},{"first_name":"Mark","full_name":"Veraar, Mark","last_name":"Veraar"}],"_id":"17372","status":"public","quality_controlled":"1","scopus_import":"1","article_processing_charge":"No","arxiv":1,"external_id":{"isi":["001315424500021"],"arxiv":["2301.06897"]}},{"article_type":"original","supplementarymaterial":"no","date_updated":"2026-10-15T09:46:00Z","publisher":"Springer Nature","type":"journal_article","publication_identifier":{"issn":["0938-8974"],"eissn":["1432-1467"]},"isi":1,"issue":"2","date_created":"2024-01-28T23:01:42Z","volume":34,"acknowledgement":"All authors acknowledge support of the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) through the SFB project F65. Under the assumptions of stationarity and ergodicity, we characterize the Gamma-limit of a micromagnetic energy functional defined on magnetizations taking value in the unit sphere and including both symmetric and antisymmetric exchange contributions. This Gamma-limit corresponds to a micromagnetic energy functional with homogeneous coefficients. We provide explicit formulas for the effective magnetic properties of the composite material in terms of homogenization correctors. Additionally, the variational analysis of the two exchange energy terms is performed in the more general setting of functionals defined on manifold-valued maps with Sobolev regularity, in the case in which the target manifold is a bounded, orientable smooth surface with tubular neighborhood of uniform thickness. Eventually, we present an explicit characterization of minimizers of the effective exchange in the case of magnetic multilayers, providing quantitative evidence of Dzyaloshinskii’s predictions on the emergence of helical structures in composite ferromagnetic materials with stochastic microstructure."}],"date_published":"2024-01-23T00:00:00Z","researchdata_availability":"not applicable","user_id":"317138e5-6ab7-11ef-aa6d-ffef3953e345","citation":{"ista":"Davoli E, D’Elia L, Ingmanns J. 2024. At the same time, the field of dynamical systems\r\nbenefited from deep learning and scaled to countless applications but does not allow\r\nparameter identification. In this paper, we draw a clear connection between the two\r\nand their key assumptions, allowing us to apply identifiable methods developed\r\nin causal representation learning to dynamical systems. The latter is described by a coefficient field a(x) generated from a given ensemble ⟨⋅⟩ and the corresponding linear elliptic operator −∇⋅a∇. In line with the theory of homogenization, the method proceeds by computing d=3 correctors (d denoting the space dimension). To be numerically tractable, this computation has to be done on a finite domain: the so-called representative volume element, i.e., a large box with, say, periodic boundary conditions. The main message of this article is: Periodize the ensemble instead of its realizations. By this, we mean that it is better to sample from a suitably periodized ensemble than to periodically extend the restriction of a realization a(x) from the whole-space ensemble ⟨⋅⟩. We make this point by investigating the bias (or systematic error), i.e., the difference between ahom and the expected value of the RVE method, in terms of its scaling w.r.t. the lateral size L of the box. In case of periodizing a(x), we heuristically argue that this error is generically O(L−1). In case of a suitable periodization of ⟨⋅⟩\r\n, we rigorously show that it is O(L−d). In fact, we give a characterization of the leading-order error term for both strategies and argue that even in the isotropic case it is generically non-degenerate. We carry out the rigorous analysis in the convenient setting of ensembles ⟨⋅⟩\r\n of Gaussian type, which allow for a straightforward periodization, passing via the (integrable) covariance function. This setting has also the advantage of making the Price theorem and the Malliavin calculus available for optimal stochastic estimates of correctors. We actually need control of second-order correctors to capture the leading-order error term. This is due to inversion symmetry when applying the two-scale expansion to the Green function. As a bonus, we present a stream-lined strategy to estimate the error in a higher-order two-scale expansion of the Green function."}],"date_published":"2024-08-01T00:00:00Z","researchdata_availability":"no","title":"Bias in the representative volume element method: Periodize the ensemble instead of its realizations","month":"08","citation":{"apa":"Clozeau, N., Josien, M., Otto, F., & Xu, Q. It is known that strong solutions to such systems of PDEs may blow-up in finite time. Moreover, for many systems of practical interest, establishing whether the blow-up occurs or not is an open question. Here we prove that a suitable multiplicative noise of transport type has a regularizing effect. More precisely, for both a sufficiently noise intensity and a high spectrum, the blow-up of strong solutions is delayed up to an arbitrary large time. Global existence is shown for the case of exponentially decreasing mass. The proofs combine and extend recent developments in regularization by noise and in the Lp(Lq)-approach to stochastic PDEs, highlighting new connections between the two areas.","lang":"eng"}],"date_published":"2024-09-01T00:00:00Z","researchdata_availability":"not applicable","year":"2024","department":[{"_id":"JuFi"}],"file_date_updated":"2025-01-09T08:01:02Z","publication_status":"published","OA_type":"hybrid","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"day":"01","project":[{"name":"Bridging Scales in Random Materials","_id":"0aa76401-070f-11eb-9043-b5bb049fa26d","call_identifier":"H2020","grant_number":"948819"}]},{"year":"2024","date_published":"2024-10-01T00:00:00Z","researchdata_availability":"no","abstract":[{"text":"We study a random matching problem on closed compact 2 -dimensional Riemannian manifolds (with respect to the squared Riemannian distance), with samples of random points whose common law is absolutely continuous with respect to the volume measure with strictly positive and bounded density. For well-prepared initial data and sufficiently small times, we rigorously prove convergence to the classical two-phase Navier-Stokes system with surface tension. The idea of the proof is to use asymptotic expansions to construct an approximate solution and to estimate the difference of the exact and approximate solutions with a spectral estimate for the (at the approximate solution) linearized Allen-Cahn operator. Assuming stochastic parabolicity conditions, we prove Lp((0,T)×Ω,tκdt;Hσ,q(Td)) -estimates. The main novelty is that we do not require p=q . Moreover, we allow arbitrary σ∈R and weights in time. Such mixed regularity estimates play a crucial role in applications to nonlinear SPDEs which is clear from our previous work. In its sharp-interface limit, the vectorial Allen–Cahn equation with a potential with N≥3 distinct minima has been conjectured to describe the evolution of branched interfaces by multiphase mean curvature flow. In the present work, we give a rigorous proof for this statement in two and three ambient dimensions and for a suitable class of potentials: as long as a strong solution to multiphase mean curvature flow exists, solutions to the vectorial Allen–Cahn equation with well-prepared initial data converge towards multiphase mean curvature flow in the limit of vanishing interface width parameter ε↘0. We even establish the rate of convergence O(ε \r\n1/2\r\n ). Our approach is based on the gradient-flow structure of the Allen–Cahn equation and its limiting motion: building on the recent concept of “gradient-flow calibrations” for multiphase mean curvature flow, we introduce a notion of relative entropy for the vectorial Allen–Cahn equation with multi-well potential. This enables us to overcome the limitations of other approaches, e.g. avoiding the need for a stability analysis of the Allen–Cahn operator or additional convergence hypotheses for the energy at positive times.","lang":"eng"}],"date_published":"2024-01-24T00:00:00Z","researchdata_availability":"no","year":"2024"},{"supplementarymaterial":"no","date_updated":"2026-10-15T09:51:23Z","type":"conference","publisher":"Association for Computing Machinery","isi":1,"publication_identifier":{"isbn":["9798400706608"],"eissn":["1043-6871"]},"date_created":"2024-06-03T07:43:15Z","ec_funded":1,"publication":"39th Annual ACM/IEEE Symposium on Logic in Computer Science","das_tickbox":"0","acknowledgement":"This research was partially supported by the ERC CoG 863818 (ForM-SMArt) grant.\r\n","oa":1,"main_file_link":[{"url":"https://doi.org/10.48550/arXiv.2405.02479","open_access":"1"}],"conference":{"location":"Tallinn, Estonia","end_date":"2024-07-11","start_date":"2024-07-08","name":"LICS: Logic in Computer Science"},"external_id":{"arxiv":["2405.02479"],"isi":["001275042100006"]},"article_number":"6","article_processing_charge":"No","arxiv":1,"scopus_import":"1","doi":"10.1145/3661814.3662080","status":"public","_id":"17098","author":[{"first_name":"Ali","full_name":"Asadi, Ali","id":"02d96aae-000e-11ec-b801-cadd0a5eefbb","last_name":"Asadi"},{"full_name":"Chatterjee, Krishnendu","first_name":"Krishnendu","last_name":"Chatterjee","id":"2E5DCA20-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","orcid":"0000-0002-4561-241X"},{"first_name":"Jakub","full_name":"Svoboda, Jakub","orcid":"0000-0002-1419-3267","id":"130759D2-D7DD-11E9-87D2-DE0DE6697425","last_name":"Svoboda"},{"id":"BD1DF4C4-D767-11E9-B658-BC13E6697425","orcid":"0000-0001-5103-038X","last_name":"Saona Urmeneta","first_name":"Raimundo J","full_name":"Saona Urmeneta, Raimundo J"}],"quality_controlled":"1","corr_author":"1","oa_version":"Preprint","fulldoi":"https://doi.org/10.1145/3661814.3662080","year":"2024","user_id":"317138e5-6ab7-11ef-aa6d-ffef3953e345","researchdata_availability":"no","abstract":[{"text":"Turn-based discounted-sum games are two-player zero-sum games played on finite directed graphs. The vertices of the graph are partitioned between player 1 and player 2. Plays are infinite walks on the graph where the next vertex is decided by a player that owns the current vertex. Each edge is assigned an integer weight and the payoff of a play is the discounted-sum of the weights of the play. The goal of player 1 is to maximize the discounted-sum payoff against the adversarial player 2. These games lie in NP ∩ coNP and are among the rare combinatorial problems that belong to this complexity class and the existence of a polynomial-time algorithm is a major open question. Since breaking the general exponential barrier has been a challenging problem, faster parameterized algorithms have been considered. If the discount factor is expressed in unary, then discounted-sum games can be solved in polynomial time. However, if the discount factor is arbitrary (or expressed in binary), but the weights are in unary, none of the existing approaches yield a sub-exponential bound. Our main result is a new analysis technique for a classical algorithm (namely, the strategy iteration algorithm) that present a new runtime bound which is [EQUATION] for game graphs with n vertices and absolute weights of at most W. In particular, our result yields a deterministic sub-exponential bound for games with weights that are constant or represented in unary.","lang":"eng"}],"date_published":"2024-07-08T00:00:00Z","title":"Deterministic sub-exponential algorithm for discounted-sum games with unary weights","month":"07","citation":{"mla":"Asadi, Ali, et al. “Deterministic Sub-Exponential Algorithm for Discounted-Sum Games with Unary Weights.” 39th Annual ACM/IEEE Symposium on Logic in Computer Science, 6, Association for Computing Machinery, 2024, doi:10.1145/3661814.3662080.","ista":"Asadi A, Chatterjee K, Svoboda J, Saona Urmeneta RJ. 2024. This quantity, known as the magnetotropic susceptibility, 𝑘, relates to the second derivative of the free energy with respect to the angle of rotation. We have used approximation-free, auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo simulations for a realistic model of 𝛼−RuCl3 and optimized the path integral to alleviate the negative sign problem. This allows us to reach temperatures down to 30K—an energy scale below the dominant Kitaev coupling. We demonstrate that the magnetotropic spin susceptibility in this model of 𝛼−RuCl3 displays scaling behavior 𝑘=𝑇⁢𝑓⁡(𝐵/𝑇) at high temperatures. Once the uniform susceptibility departs from the Curie law (i.e., at the energy scale of the exchange interactions), it appears to transition to an emergent scalinglike behavior, characterized by a different function 𝑓 at lower temperatures, stemming from the locality of torque fluctuations. We observe a remarkable numerical match between experiment and simulations and we also find qualitative agreement with the pure Kitaev model. In comparison, for the XXZ Heisenberg Hamiltonian, the scaling 𝑘=𝑇⁢𝑓⁡(𝐵/𝑇) breaks down at a temperature scale where the uniform spin susceptibility deviates from the Curie law and never reemerges at low temperatures."}],"researchdata_availability":"no","date_published":"2024-11-15T00:00:00Z","user_id":"317138e5-6ab7-11ef-aa6d-ffef3953e345","year":"2024","isi":1,"publication_identifier":{"eissn":["2469-9969"],"issn":["2469-9950"]},"publisher":"American Physical Society","type":"journal_article","date_updated":"2026-10-15T09:50:59Z","supplementarymaterial":"yes","article_type":"letter_note","main_file_link":[{"url":"https://doi.org/10.48550/arXiv.2312.03080","open_access":"1"}],"oa":1,"acknowledgement":"We gratefully acknowledge the Gauss Centre for Supercomputing e.V. for funding this project by providing computing time on the GCS Supercomputer SUPERMUC-NG at the Leibniz Supercomputing Centre (Project No. pn73xu) as well as the scientific support and HPC resources provided by the Erlangen National High Performance Computing Center (NHR@FAU) of the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) under the NHR Project b133ae. In this work, we describe the phosphide Ce6Ni6P17, where the Ce+3 ions accommodate in a body-centered cubic lattice of Ce6 regular octahedra. From measurements of magnetization, specific heat, and resistivity, we determine a rich phase diagram as a function of temperature and magnetic field in which different magnetic phases are found. Besides clear evidence of magnetic frustration is obtained from entropy analysis. At zero field, a second-order antiferromagnetic transition occurs at TN1≈1 K followed by a first-order transition at TN2≈0.45 K. With magnetic field new magnetic phases appear, including a weakly first-order transition which ends in a classical critical point and a third magnetic phase. They have wide applications ranging from computer science to economics and biology. Yet, even though an agent’s payoff only depends on the actions of their direct neighbors in graphical games, computing the Nash equilibria and making statements about the convergence time of \"natural\" local dynamics in particular can be highly challenging. In this work, we present a novel approach for classifying complexity of Nash equilibria in graphical games by establishing a connection to local graph algorithms, a subfield of distributed computing. In particular, we make the observation that the equilibria of graphical games are equivalent to locally verifiable labelings (LVL) in graphs; vertex labelings which are verifiable with constant-round local algorithms. This connection allows us to derive novel lower bounds on the convergence time to equilibrium of best-response dynamics in graphical games. Since we establish that distributed convergence can sometimes be provably slow, we also introduce and give bounds on an intuitive notion of \"time-constrained\" inefficiency of best responses. We exemplify how our results can be used in the implementation of mechanisms that ensure convergence of best responses to a Nash equilibrium. Our results thus also give insight into the convergence of strategy-proof algorithms for graphical games, which is still not well understood.","lang":"eng"}],"researchdata_availability":"no","user_id":"317138e5-6ab7-11ef-aa6d-ffef3953e345","year":"2024","file_date_updated":"2024-02-26T09:04:58Z","department":[{"_id":"KrCh"}],"publication_status":"published","project":[{"_id":"0599E47C-7A3F-11EA-A408-12923DDC885E","name":"Formal Methods for Stochastic Models: Algorithms and Applications","call_identifier":"H2020","grant_number":"863818"}],"language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"day":"18","scopus_import":"1","arxiv":1,"article_processing_charge":"No","article_number":"11","tmp":{"image":"/images/cc_by.png","short":"CC BY (4.0)","legal_code_url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/legalcode","name":"Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International Public License (CC-BY 4.0)"},"external_id":{"isi":["001585185800011"],"arxiv":["2102.13457"]},"conference":{"start_date":"2023-12-06","name":"OPODIS: Conference on Principles of Distributed Systems","location":"Tokyo, Japan","end_date":"2023-12-08"},"fulldoi":"https://doi.org/10.4230/LIPIcs.OPODIS.2023.11","ddc":["000"],"oa_version":"Published Version","corr_author":"1","_id":"15006","status":"public","quality_controlled":"1","author":[{"last_name":"Hirvonen","full_name":"Hirvonen, Juho","first_name":"Juho"},{"last_name":"Schmid","id":"38B437DE-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","orcid":"0000-0002-6978-7329","full_name":"Schmid, Laura","first_name":"Laura"},{"last_name":"Chatterjee","id":"2E5DCA20-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","orcid":"0000-0002-4561-241X","full_name":"Chatterjee, Krishnendu","first_name":"Krishnendu"},{"first_name":"Stefan","full_name":"Schmid, Stefan","last_name":"Schmid"}],"doi":"10.4230/LIPIcs.OPODIS.2023.11","intvolume":" 286","acknowledgement":"This work was partially funded by the Academy of Finland, grant 314888, the European Research Council CoG 863818 (ForM-SMArt), and the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) project I 4800-N (ADVISE).
