Here we demonstrate two-axis control of a spin 3/2 qubit in natural Ge. The qubit is formed in a hut wire double quantum dot device. The Pauli spin blockade principle allowed us to demonstrate electric dipole spin resonance by applying a radio frequency electric field to one of the electrodes defining the double quantum dot. Coherent hole spin oscillations with Rabi frequencies reaching 140 MHz are demonstrated and dephasing times of 130 ns are measured. The reported results emphasize the potential of Ge as a platform for fast and electrically tunable hole spin qubit devices.","lang":"eng"}],"acknowledged_ssus":[{"_id":"M-Shop"},{"_id":"NanoFab"}],"doi":"10.1038/s41467-018-06418-4","scopus_import":"1","department":[{"_id":"GeKa"}],"date_created":"2018-12-11T11:44:30Z","status":"public","article_processing_charge":"Yes","related_material":{"record":[{"relation":"popular_science","id":"7977"},{"status":"public","relation":"dissertation_contains","id":"7996"}]},"day":"25","author":[{"full_name":"Watzinger, Hannes","last_name":"Watzinger","id":"35DF8E50-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","first_name":"Hannes"},{"last_name":"Kukucka","id":"3F5D8856-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","first_name":"Josip","full_name":"Kukucka, Josip"},{"last_name":"Vukusic","id":"31E9F056-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","first_name":"Lada","full_name":"Vukusic, Lada","orcid":"0000-0003-2424-8636"},{"last_name":"Gao","first_name":"Fei","full_name":"Gao, Fei"},{"full_name":"Wang, Ting","first_name":"Ting","last_name":"Wang"},{"full_name":"Schäffler, Friedrich","last_name":"Schäffler","first_name":"Friedrich"},{"full_name":"Zhang, Jian","last_name":"Zhang","first_name":"Jian"},{"first_name":"Georgios","last_name":"Katsaros","id":"38DB5788-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","orcid":"0000-0001-8342-202X","full_name":"Katsaros, Georgios"}],"article_type":"original","publisher":"Nature Publishing Group","external_id":{"isi":["000445560800010"]},"intvolume":" 9","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"project":[{"grant_number":"335497","name":"Towards Spin qubits and Majorana fermions in Germanium self assembled hut-wires","_id":"25517E86-B435-11E9-9278-68D0E5697425","call_identifier":"FP7"},{"call_identifier":"FWF","name":"Loch Spin-Qubits und Majorana-Fermionen in Germanium","_id":"2552F888-B435-11E9-9278-68D0E5697425","grant_number":"Y00715"}],"type":"journal_article","date_published":"2018-09-25T00:00:00Z","file_date_updated":"2020-07-14T12:48:02Z","quality_controlled":"1","citation":{"ieee":"H. As a pattern specification language, we use timed regular expressions, a formalism well-suited for expressing properties of concurrent asynchronous behaviors embedded in metric time. We construct a timed automaton accepting the timed language denoted by ϕ and modify it slightly for the purpose of matching. We then apply zone-based reachability computation to this automaton while it reads ω, and retrieve all the matching segments from the results. Since the procedure is automaton based, it can be applied to patterns specified by other formalisms such as timed temporal logics reducible to timed automata or directly encoded as timed automata. The procedure has been implemented and its performance on synthetic examples is demonstrated.","lang":"eng"}],"doi":"10.1007/978-3-030-00151-3_13","scopus_import":"1","page":"215 - 232","publication_status":"published","_id":"78","volume":11022,"title":"Online timed pattern matching using automata","has_accepted_license":"1","ddc":["000"],"year":"2018","oa_version":"Submitted Version","oa":1,"isi":1,"file":[{"relation":"main_file","date_updated":"2020-07-14T12:48:03Z","creator":"dernst","content_type":"application/pdf","file_id":"7831","file_size":374851,"access_level":"open_access","file_name":"2018_LNCS_Bakhirkin.pdf","checksum":"436b7574934324cfa7d1d3986fddc65b","date_created":"2020-05-14T11:34:34Z"}]},{"day":"01","status":"public","article_processing_charge":"No","date_created":"2020-05-10T22:00:51Z","department":[{"_id":"DaAl"}],"external_id":{"arxiv":["1802.05668"]},"author":[{"last_name":"Polino","first_name":"Antonio","full_name":"Polino, Antonio"},{"full_name":"Pascanu, Razvan","first_name":"Razvan","last_name":"Pascanu"},{"orcid":"0000-0003-3650-940X","full_name":"Alistarh, Dan-Adrian","first_name":"Dan-Adrian","id":"4A899BFC-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","last_name":"Alistarh"}],"type":"conference","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"conference":{"end_date":"2018-05-03","start_date":"2018-04-30","name":"ICLR: International Conference on Learning Representations","location":"Vancouver, Canada"},"date_updated":"2025-06-30T10:04:44Z","citation":{"short":"A. One aspect of the field receiving considerable attention is efficiently executing deep models in resource-constrained environments, such as mobile or embedded devices. This paper focuses on this problem, and proposes two new compression methods, which jointly leverage weight quantization and distillation of larger teacher networks into smaller student networks. The first method we propose is called quantized distillation and leverages distillation during the training process, by incorporating distillation loss, expressed with respect to the teacher, into the training of a student network whose weights are quantized to a limited set of levels. The second method, differentiable quantization, optimizes the location of quantization points through stochastic gradient descent, to better fit the behavior of the teacher model. We validate both methods through experiments on convolutional and recurrent architectures. We show that quantized shallow students can reach similar accuracy levels to full-precision teacher models, while providing order of magnitude compression, and inference speedup that is linear in the depth reduction. In sum, our results enable DNNs for resource-constrained environments to leverage architecture and accuracy advances developed on more powerful devices."}],"user_id":"2DF688A6-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","_id":"7812","publication_status":"published"},{"alternative_title":["LNCS"],"month":"08","arxiv":1,"abstract":[{"lang":"eng","text":"Markov Decision Processes (MDPs) are a popular class of models suitable for solving control decision problems in probabilistic reactive systems. We consider parametric MDPs (pMDPs) that include parameters in some of the transition probabilities to account for stochastic uncertainties of the environment such as noise or input disturbances. We study pMDPs with reachability objectives where the parameter values are unknown and impossible to measure directly during execution, but there is a probability distribution known over the parameter values. We study for the first time computing parameter-independent strategies that are expectation optimal, i.e., optimize the expected reachability probability under the probability distribution over the parameters. We present an encoding of our problem to partially observable MDPs (POMDPs), i.e., a reduction of our problem to computing optimal strategies in POMDPs. We evaluate our method experimentally on several benchmarks: a motivating (repeated) learner model; a series of benchmarks of varying configurations of a robot moving on a grid; and a consensus protocol."}],"user_id":"c635000d-4b10-11ee-a964-aac5a93f6ac1","main_file_link":[{"open_access":"1","url":"https://arxiv.org/abs/1806.05126"}],"scopus_import":"1","doi":"10.1007/978-3-319-99154-2_4","_id":"79","publication_status":"published","page":"53-70","volume":11024,"title":"Parameter-independent strategies for pMDPs via POMDPs","year":"2018","oa_version":"Preprint","oa":1,"isi":1,"language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"type":"conference","intvolume":" 11024","date_updated":"2023-09-13T09:38:28Z","conference":{"end_date":"2018-09-07","start_date":"2018-09-04","name":"QEST: Quantitative Evaluation of Systems","location":"Beijing, China"},"citation":{"chicago":"Arming, Sebastian, Ezio Bartocci, Krishnendu Chatterjee, Joost P Katoen, and Ana Sokolova. “Parameter-Independent Strategies for PMDPs via POMDPs,” 11024:53–70. This colony-level protection is termed social immunity, and it enhances the health and survival of the colony. In this review, we address how social immunity emerges from its mechanistic components to produce colony-level disease avoidance, resistance, and tolerance. To understand the evolutionary causes and consequences of social immunity, we highlight the need for studies that evaluate the effects of social immunity on colony fitness. We discuss the role that host life history and ecology have on predicted eco-evolutionary dynamics, which differ among the social insect lineages. The variant of TPTL we consider extends linear temporal logic (LTL) with clock variables and reset quantifiers, providing a mechanism to specify real-time constraints. We first describe a general monitoring algorithm based on an exhaustive computation of the set of satisfying clock assignments as a finite union of zones. We then propose a specialized monitoring algorithm for the one-variable case using a partition of the time domain based on the notion of region equivalence, whose complexity is linear in the length of the signal, thereby generalizing a known result regarding the monitoring of metric temporal logic (MTL). The region and zone representations of time constraints are known from timed automata verification and can also be used in the discrete-time case. Our prototype implementation appears to outperform previous discrete-time implementations of TPTL monitoring,"}],"doi":"10.1007/978-3-030-00151-3_4","scopus_import":"1","month":"08","alternative_title":["LNCS"],"oa":1,"oa_version":"Submitted Version","isi":1,"file":[{"date_updated":"2020-10-09T06:24:21Z","relation":"main_file","file_id":"8638","content_type":"application/pdf","creator":"dernst","success":1,"file_size":537219,"access_level":"open_access","date_created":"2020-10-09T06:24:21Z","checksum":"e5d81c9b50a6bd9d8a2c16953aad7e23","file_name":"2018_LNCS_Elgyuett.pdf"}],"has_accepted_license":"1","year":"2018","ddc":["000"],"title":"Monitoring temporal logic with clock variables","volume":11022,"date_published":"2018-08-26T00:00:00Z","file_date_updated":"2020-10-09T06:24:21Z","publist_id":"7973","quality_controlled":"1","citation":{"ama":"Elgyütt A, Ferrere T, Henzinger TA. Following the ascent of resistant mutants, the densities of bacteria in these simple communities become limited by resources rather than the phage. Despite the evolution of resistant hosts, upon which the phage cannot replicate, the lytic phage population is most commonly maintained in an apparently stable state with the resistant bacteria. Several mechanisms have been put forward to account for this result. Here we report the results of population dynamic/evolution experiments with a virulent mutant of phage Lambda, λVIR, and Escherichia coli in serial transfer cultures. We show that, following the ascent of λVIR-resistant bacteria, λVIRis maintained in the majority of cases in maltose-limited minimal media and in all cases in nutrient-rich broth. Using mathematical models and experiments, we show that the dominant mechanism responsible for maintenance of λVIRin these resource-limited populations dominated by resistant E. coli is a high rate of either phenotypic or genetic transition from resistance to susceptibility—a hitherto undemonstrated mechanism we term "leaky resistance." We discuss the implications of leaky resistance to our understanding of the conditions for the maintenance of phage in populations of bacteria—their “existence conditions.”."}],"doi":"10.1371/journal.pbio.2005971","scopus_import":"1","department":[{"_id":"CaGu"}],"date_created":"2018-12-11T11:44:32Z","article_processing_charge":"Yes","status":"public","related_material":{"record":[{"id":"9810","relation":"research_data","status":"public"}]},"article_number":"2005971","day":"16","author":[{"full_name":"Chaudhry, Waqas","first_name":"Waqas","last_name":"Chaudhry"},{"orcid":"0000-0001-7460-7479","full_name":"Pleska, Maros","last_name":"Pleska","id":"4569785E-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","first_name":"Maros"},{"last_name":"Shah","first_name":"Nilang","full_name":"Shah, Nilang"},{"first_name":"Howard","last_name":"Weiss","full_name":"Weiss, Howard"},{"full_name":"Mccall, Ingrid","last_name":"Mccall","first_name":"Ingrid"},{"last_name":"Meyer","first_name":"Justin","full_name":"Meyer, Justin"},{"full_name":"Gupta, Animesh","last_name":"Gupta","first_name":"Animesh"},{"id":"47F8433E-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","last_name":"Guet","first_name":"Calin C","orcid":"0000-0001-6220-2052","full_name":"Guet, Calin C"},{"full_name":"Levin, Bruce","last_name":"Levin","first_name":"Bruce"}],"publisher":"Public Library of Science","external_id":{"isi":["000443383300024"]},"intvolume":" 16","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"type":"journal_article","date_published":"2018-08-16T00:00:00Z","file_date_updated":"2020-07-14T12:48:10Z","publist_id":"7972","quality_controlled":"1","citation":{"apa":"Chaudhry, W., Pleska, M., Shah, N., Weiss, H., Mccall, I., Meyer, J., … Levin, B. Coarse-grained synchronization, which locks the entire data structure, is easy to implement but does not scale. Fine-grained synchronization can scale well, but can be hard to reason about. Hand-over-hand locking, in which operations are pipelined as they traverse the data structure, combines fine-grained synchronization with ease of use. However, the traditional implementation suffers from inherent overheads. This paper introduces snapshot-based synchronization (SBS), a novel hand-over-hand locking mechanism. SBS decouples the synchronization state from the data, significantly improving cache utilization. Further, it relies on guarantees provided by pipelining to minimize synchronization that requires cross-thread communication. Snapshot-based synchronization thus scales much better than traditional hand-over-hand locking, while maintaining the same ease of use."}],"publication_status":"published","page":"465 - 479","_id":"85","alternative_title":["LNCS"],"acknowledgement":"Trevor Brown was supported in part by the ISF (grants 2005/17 & 1749/14) and by a NSERC post-doctoral fellowship.","month":"08"},{"editor":[{"first_name":"Marten","last_name":"Lohstroh","full_name":"Lohstroh, Marten"},{"first_name":"Patricia","last_name":"Derler","full_name":"Derler, Patricia"},{"first_name":"Marjan","last_name":"Sirjani","full_name":"Sirjani, Marjan"}],"citation":{"ista":"Chatterjee K, Henzinger TA, Otop J. 2018.Computing average response time. These proteins are bright, but exhibit several drawbacks such as relatively large size, oxygen-dependence, sensitivity to low pH, and limited switching speed. Therefore, RSFPs from other origins with improved properties need to be explored. Here, we report the development of two RSFPs based on the LOV domain of the photoreceptor protein YtvA from Bacillus subtilis. LOV domains obtain their fluorescence by association with the abundant cellular cofactor flavin mononucleotide (FMN). Under illumination with blue and ultraviolet light, they undergo a photocycle, making these proteins inherently photoswitchable. Our first improved variant, rsLOV1, can be used for RESOLFT imaging, whereas rsLOV2 proved useful for STED nanoscopy of living cells with a resolution of down to 50 nm. In addition to their smaller size compared to GFP-related proteins (17 kDa instead of 27 kDa) and their usability at low pH, rsLOV1 and rsLOV2 exhibit faster switching kinetics, switching on and off 3 times faster than rsEGFP2, the fastest-switching RSFP reported to date. Therefore, LOV-domain-based RSFPs have potential for applications where the switching speed of GFP-based proteins is limiting."}]},{"publication":"Annals of Applied Probability","volume":28,"title":"Random inscribed polytopes have similar radius functions as Poisson-Delaunay mosaics","year":"2018","oa_version":"Preprint","oa":1,"isi":1,"month":"10","abstract":[{"lang":"eng","text":"Using the geodesic distance on the n-dimensional sphere, we study the expected radius function of the Delaunay mosaic of a random set of points. Specifically, we consider the partition of the mosaic into intervals of the radius function and determine the expected number of intervals whose radii are less than or equal to a given threshold. We find that the expectations are essentially the same as for the Poisson–Delaunay mosaic in n-dimensional Euclidean space. Assuming the points are not contained in a hemisphere, the Delaunay mosaic is isomorphic to the boundary complex of the convex hull in Rn+1, so we also get the expected number of faces of a random inscribed polytope. As proved in Antonelli et al. [Adv. in Appl. Probab. 9–12 (1977–1980)], an orthant section of the n-sphere is isometric to the standard n-simplex equipped with the Fisher information metric. It follows that the latter space has similar stochastic properties as the n-dimensional Euclidean space. Our results are therefore relevant in information geometry and in population genetics."}],"arxiv":1,"main_file_link":[{"url":"https://arxiv.org/abs/1705.02870","open_access":"1"}],"user_id":"c635000d-4b10-11ee-a964-aac5a93f6ac1","scopus_import":"1","doi":"10.1214/18-AAP1389","_id":"87","issue":"5","page":"3215 - 3238","publication_status":"published","article_processing_charge":"No","status":"public","day":"01","related_material":{"record":[{"id":"6287","status":"public","relation":"dissertation_contains"}]},"date_created":"2018-12-11T11:44:33Z","department":[{"_id":"HeEd"}],"author":[{"orcid":"0000-0002-9823-6833","full_name":"Edelsbrunner, Herbert","last_name":"Edelsbrunner","id":"3FB178DA-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","first_name":"Herbert"},{"first_name":"Anton","last_name":"Nikitenko","id":"3E4FF1BA-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","orcid":"0000-0002-0659-3201","full_name":"Nikitenko, Anton"}],"external_id":{"arxiv":["1705.02870"],"isi":["000442893500018"]},"article_type":"original","publisher":"Institute of Mathematical Statistics","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"type":"journal_article","project":[{"_id":"2561EBF4-B435-11E9-9278-68D0E5697425","grant_number":"I02979-N35","name":"Persistence and stability of geometric complexes","call_identifier":"FWF"}],"intvolume":" 28","date_updated":"2026-04-08T14:19:30Z","citation":{"ama":"Edelsbrunner H, Nikitenko A. In plants, a directional distribution of the plant hormone auxin is at the core of many developmental programs. A feedback regulation of auxin on the polarized localization of PIN auxin transporters in individual cells has been proposed as a self-organizing mechanism for coordinated tissue polarization, but the molecular mechanisms linking auxin signalling to PIN-dependent auxin transport remain unknown. We performed a microarray-based approach to find regulators of the auxin-induced PIN relocation in the Arabidopsis thaliana root. We identified a subset of a family of phosphatidylinositol transfer proteins (PITP), the PATELLINs (PATL). Here, we show that PATLs are expressed in partially overlapping cells types in different tissues going through mitosis or initiating differentiation programs. PATLs are plasma membrane-associated proteins accumulated in Arabidopsis embryos, primary roots, lateral root primordia, and developing stomata. Higher order patl mutants display reduced PIN1 repolarization in response to auxin, shorter root apical meristem, and drastic defects in embryo and seedling development. This suggests PATLs redundantly play a crucial role in polarity and patterning in Arabidopsis."}],"doi":"10.1242/jcs.204198","scopus_import":"1","publication_status":"published","_id":"913","issue":"2","status":"public","article_processing_charge":"No","publication_identifier":{"issn":["0021-9533"]},"article_number":"jcs.204198","day":"29","corr_author":"1","department":[{"_id":"JiFr"}],"date_created":"2018-12-11T11:49:10Z","author":[{"full_name":"Tejos, Ricardo","last_name":"Tejos","first_name":"Ricardo"},{"first_name":"Cecilia","last_name":"Rodríguez Furlán","full_name":"Rodríguez Furlán, Cecilia"},{"full_name":"Adamowski, Maciek","orcid":"0000-0001-6463-5257","last_name":"Adamowski","id":"45F536D2-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","first_name":"Maciek"},{"full_name":"Sauer, Michael","last_name":"Sauer","first_name":"Michael"},{"full_name":"Norambuena, Lorena","first_name":"Lorena","last_name":"Norambuena"},{"orcid":"0000-0002-8302-7596","full_name":"Friml, Jirí","first_name":"Jirí","last_name":"Friml","id":"4159519E-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87"}],"publisher":"Company of Biologists","external_id":{"isi":["000424842400019"]},"language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"project":[{"_id":"25716A02-B435-11E9-9278-68D0E5697425","name":"Polarity and subcellular dynamics in plants","grant_number":"282300","call_identifier":"FP7"}],"type":"journal_article","intvolume":" 131","pubrep_id":"988","citation":{"ista":"Tejos R, Rodríguez Furlán C, Adamowski M, Sauer M, Norambuena L, Friml J. 2018. Targets of DME-mediated DNA demethylation reside in small, euchromatic, AT-rich transposons and at the boundaries of large transposons, but how DME interacts with these diverse chromatin states is unknown. The STRUCTURE SPECIFIC RECOGNITION PROTEIN 1 (SSRP1) subunit of the chromatin remodeler FACT (facilitates chromatin transactions), was previously shown to be involved in the DME-dependent regulation of genomic imprinting in Arabidopsis endosperm. Therefore, to investigate the interaction between DME and chromatin, we focused on the activity of the two FACT subunits, SSRP1 and SUPPRESSOR of TY16 (SPT16), during reproduction in Arabidopsis. We found that FACT colocalizes with nuclear DME in vivo, and that DME has two classes of target sites, the first being euchromatic and accessible to DME, but the second, representing over half of DME targets, requiring the action of FACT for DME-mediated DNA demethylation genome-wide. Our results show that the FACT-dependent DME targets are GC-rich heterochromatin domains with high nucleosome occupancy enriched with H3K9me2 and H3K27me1. Further, we demonstrate that heterochromatin-associated linker histone H1 specifically mediates the requirement for FACT at a subset of DME-target loci. Overall, our results demonstrate that FACT is required for DME targeting by facilitating its access to heterochromatin.","lang":"eng"}],"doi":"10.1073/pnas.1713333115","keyword":["Multidisciplinary"],"scopus_import":"1","page":"E4720-E4729","license":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/","publication_status":"published","pmid":1,"_id":"9471","issue":"20","month":"05","author":[{"full_name":"Frost, Jennifer M.","first_name":"Jennifer M.","last_name":"Frost"},{"full_name":"Kim, M.
