Three main ideas have been put forward to explain “faster-X” adaptation. The first is that new beneficial mutations are typically partially recessive with respect to fitness, leading to more efficient selection in hemizygous males. The second is that sex differences in recombination, or sex differences in variance in reproductive success, enhance the effective population size on the X chromosome relative to autosomes. Both ideas have limitations: the first conflicts with theories of dominance, in which beneficial mutations are proposed to be partially dominant, while the second only applies to some taxa. Here we tested a third, newly-proposed theory, in which mutations with large “scaled phenotypic effects” (i.e., large effects relative to the distance to a phenotypic optimum) experience more positive selection on the X. Specifically, we used three proxies for scaled phenotypic effects—amino-acid dissimilarity, amino-acid conservation, and gene age—and estimated X and autosomal rates of adaptation of nonsynonymous mutations across effect-size classes. We did this in three lineages with a well-documented faster-X: Drosophila melanogaster, Mus musculus, and Homo sapiens. As expected, we found that large-effect mutations were more likely to be under purifying selection and less likely to be under positive selection than small-effect mutations. However, contrary to the new theory, faster-X adaptation was not enriched among large-effect mutations. Overall, our results highlight an unresolved gap between patterns of sex chromosome evolution and theories of dominance for fitness."}],"quality_controlled":"1","publication":"Genome Biology and Evolution","publication_status":"epub_ahead","date_published":"2026-10-10T00:00:00Z","OA_type":"gold","date_updated":"2026-10-14T08:17:09Z","ddc":["570"],"status":"public","article_number":"evag259","publisher":"Oxford University Press","keyword":["evolutionary biology","population genetics","sex chromosomes","adaptation","genetic divergence","McDonald-Kreitman test","Fisher’s geometric model"],"citation":{"ista":"Ruzicka F, Vicoso B. 2026. In both settings, exact solutions are in\r\ntractable. Fortwo-playerzero-sumconcurrentstochasticgames,valuescanbeirrational,and\r\nthe associated decision problem is SQRT-SUM hard. For multi-player turn-based stochastic\r\ngames,theequilibriumprobabilitiescanbeirrational,anddecidingtheconstrainedexistence\r\nof a Nash equilibrium is undecidable in the presence of memory, and ∃R-complete when the\r\nplayers are restricted to stationary strategies. Hence, in both settings, the natural computational problem is the approximation of the solution within an arbitrary additive error. In\r\nthis thesis, we present improved complexity results and algorithms for such approximation\r\nproblems.\r\nThe first part of the thesis considers two-player zero-sum concurrent stochastic games\r\nwith two classic objectives: (a) stateful-discounted objectives, which are similar to the classic\r\ndiscounted-sum objectives, but states are associated with different discount factors rather\r\nthan a single discount factor; and (b) parity objectives, which are a canonical representation\r\nfor ω-regular objectives. For stateful-discounted objectives, given an ordering of the discount\r\nfactors, the limit value is the limit of the value of the stateful-discounted objectives, as\r\nthe discount factors approach zero according to the given order. The value-approximation\r\nproblem is known to be in EXPSPACE for the limit value of stateful-discounted objectives and\r\nin PSPACEforparityobjectives,andthebest-knownalgorithmsforbothproblemsareatleast\r\nexponential time, with an exponential dependence on the number of states and actions. Our\r\nmain results for the value-approximation problem for the limit value of stateful-discounted\r\nobjectives and parity objectives areas follows: (a)we establish TFNPNP complexity; and (b)we\r\npresent algorithms that improve the dependency on the number of actions in the exponent\r\nfrom linear to logarithmic. In particular, if the number of states is constant, our algorithms\r\nrun in polynomial time.\r\nThe second part of the thesis considers multi-player turn-based stochastic games with\r\nterminal payoffs, where the players are restricted to stationary strategies. We study the\r\napproximate constrained existence problem of Nash equilibria: given a game that has a Nash\r\nequilibrium in which the payoff of every player lies in a given interval, compute a strategy\r\nprofile that is an ε-Nash equilibrium and that satisfies the same constraints up to an additive\r\nerror ε. Our main results are as follows: (a) we present an FNPNP algorithm for the problem;\r\nand(b)we establish that its decision version is NP-hard, already with two players. For the\r\nupperbound,weshowthatifaconstrainedNashequilibriumexists,thenthereexists one\r\nin which the non-zero probabilities are at least an inverse of a double-exponential in the\r\ni\r\ninput size, and that such a strategy profile can be represented, up to an additive error ε, with\r\nfloating-point numbers of polynomial size. We complement the upper bound with a lower\r\nbound on this approach: we present a game with only five players in which every constrained\r\nNash equilibrium requires double-exponentially small probabilities.\r\nThe two parts share a common technical toolkit: bounds on solutions of systems of\r\npolynomial inequalities that arise from real algebraic geometry, the floating-point representation of doubly-exponentially small numbers, and guess-and-verify procedures that resolve\r\nsingle-player games with an NP oracle.","lang":"eng"}],"_id":"23079","user_id":"8b945eb4-e2f2-11eb-945a-df72226e66a9","OA_place":"publisher","year":"2026","date_updated":"2026-10-16T08:00:45Z","ec_funded":1,"date_published":"2026-10-09T00:00:00Z","publication_status":"published","project":[{"name":"Formal Methods for Stochastic Models: Algorithms and Applications","call_identifier":"H2020","grant_number":"863818","_id":"0599E47C-7A3F-11EA-A408-12923DDC885E"},{"_id":"4029cfc7-b034-11f1-9e55-88ab2ff3b6ee","grant_number":"COE12","name":"Bilateral Artificial Intelligence (Chatterjee)"},{"grant_number":"101020093","_id":"62781420-2b32-11ec-9570-8d9b63373d4d","call_identifier":"H2020","name":"Vigilant Algorithmic Monitoring of Software"}],"article_processing_charge":"No","oa":1,"tmp":{"image":"/images/cc_by.png","short":"CC BY (4.0)","legal_code_url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/legalcode","name":"Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International Public License (CC-BY 4.0)"},"fulldoi":"https://doi.org/10.15479/AT-ISTA-23079","supervisor":[{"orcid":"0000-0002-4561-241X","id":"2E5DCA20-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","first_name":"Krishnendu","last_name":"Chatterjee","full_name":"Chatterjee, Krishnendu"}],"oa_version":"Published Version","publication_identifier":{"issn":["2791-4585"]},"acknowledgement":"The research reported in Part I was partially supported by the European Research\r\nCouncil (ERC) Consolidator Grant 863818 (ForM-SMArt), by the Austrian Science Fund\r\n(FWF) 10.55776/COE12, and by the French Agence Nationale de la Recherche (ANR) grant\r\nANR-21-CE40-0020 (CONVERGENCE project). Furthermore, we also consider the case of MLS and provide the first lower bound showing that its communication complexity is much worse than previously believed, i.e., it is very far from $ \\log(N) $.\r\nFinally, we also propose a variant of MLS which provably achieves the same security properties with a much lower communication cost."}],"_id":"22664","user_id":"8b945eb4-e2f2-11eb-945a-df72226e66a9","OA_place":"publisher","year":"2026","date_updated":"2026-10-16T10:14:40Z","date_published":"2026-08-10T00:00:00Z","publication_status":"published","article_processing_charge":"No","oa":1,"tmp":{"name":"Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0)","legal_code_url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0/legalcode","image":"/images/cc_by_nc_sa.png","short":"CC BY-NC-SA (4.0)"},"supervisor":[{"orcid":"0000-0002-9139-1654","id":"3E04A7AA-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","first_name":"Krzysztof Z","full_name":"Pietrzak, Krzysztof Z","last_name":"Pietrzak"}],"fulldoi":"https://doi.org/10.15479/AT-ISTA-22664"},{"oa_version":"Published Version","day":"08","title":"Trustworthy machine learning in high dimensions","page":"446","acknowledgement":"This project was partially supported by the 2019 Lopez-Loreta prize,\r\nthe European Union (ERC, INF2\r\n, project number 101161364), the Austrian Science Fund\r\n(FWF) 10.55776/COE12, and a Google PhD fellowship in machine intelligence. A central puzzle has been the clear benefit of scaling architecture size and overfitting the training set in supervised learning tasks. This evidence, in apparent contradiction with classical statistical learning theory, pushed researchers to develop a new theory capturing the interplay between the algorithmic and architectural bias of training and the specific target function, differently from previous methods rooted in uniform stability.\r\nThis approach has enabled a grounded understanding of novel learning regimes, typically through formal limits where the number of training samples $n$, data dimensions $d$, and model parameters $p$ grow to infinity at different rates. \\\\\r\nIn this thesis, we follow this approach, focusing on the trustworthiness of high-dimensional models: properties that are difficult to control during training or deployment and often emerge under unpredictable or adversarial conditions. In such settings, it is crucial to formally ensure a priori the reliability of machine learning systems.\r\nFirst, we study data memorization, both as label fitting and as the storage of private information about training samples in trained parameters. We prove that $p = \\Omega(n)$ parameters are sufficient for a deep neural network to memorize a generic set of labels, and for a model to memorize spurious features across training data. We then give evidence that $p = \\Omega(dn)$ parameters are instead necessary for an adversary to reconstruct the full training set from the trained parameters.\r\nSecond, we study robustness, both to adversarial perturbations and to distribution shift. We first prove that $p = \\Omega(dn)$ parameters can be sufficient for a class of neural networks to overfit the training data while guaranteeing robustness to adversarial perturbations. Then, we focus on spurious correlations learning in high-dimensional regression, studying the effect of the ridge regularization parameter in the proportional regime $n = \\Theta(d)$, and connecting it via an equivalence argument to the role of over-parameterization $p = \\Omega(n)$ in neural networks. We also investigate the architectural bias of attention-based networks, showing that they are sensitive to the replacement of individual words in an embedded sentence, allowing them to generalize on sentences where the contextual meaning depends on one or few words.\r\nFinally, we study differentially private optimization in high-dimensional regimes. We prove that standard private gradient methods do not suffer in the over-parameterized regime $p = \\Omega(n)$, challenging the current wisdom based on stability-derived generalization bounds. We then consider linear regression in the proportional regime $n = \\Theta(d)$, showing that standard private gradient descent can achieve optimal rates under appropriate hyper-parameter scaling, such as sufficiently small gradient clipping constants, whose role is still debated in practice."}],"author":[{"first_name":"Simone","full_name":"Bombari, Simone","last_name":"Bombari","id":"ca726dda-de17-11ea-bc14-f9da834f63aa"}],"related_material":{"record":[{"id":"12537","status":"public","relation":"part_of_dissertation"},{"relation":"part_of_dissertation","id":"21324","status":"public"},{"status":"public","id":"22894","relation":"part_of_dissertation"},{"relation":"part_of_dissertation","status":"public","id":"19627"},{"relation":"part_of_dissertation","id":"12859","status":"public"},{"status":"public","id":"18973","relation":"part_of_dissertation"},{"relation":"part_of_dissertation","status":"public","id":"18972"}]},"researchdata_availability":"no","year":"2026","OA_place":"publisher","user_id":"8b945eb4-e2f2-11eb-945a-df72226e66a9","_id":"22857","date_published":"2026-09-08T00:00:00Z","das_tickbox":"0","date_updated":"2026-10-16T10:42:36Z","publication_status":"published","acknowledged_ssus":[{"_id":"ScienComp"}],"project":[{"name":"Trustworthy Deep Learning Theory: Private Over-Parameterized Models and Robust LLMs","_id":"92099302-16d5-11f0-9cad-f9a785f54fbd"},{"grant_number":"101161364","_id":"911e6d1f-16d5-11f0-9cad-c5c68c6a1cdf","name":"Inference in High Dimensions: Light-speed Algorithms and Information Limits"},{"name":"Bilateral Artificial Intelligence (Mondelli)","grant_number":"COE12","_id":"74caaef7-b034-11f1-8f2d-e0e993bb422e"}],"article_processing_charge":"No","oa":1,"fulldoi":"https://doi.org/10.15479/AT-ISTA-22857","supervisor":[{"first_name":"Marco","last_name":"Mondelli","full_name":"Mondelli, Marco","orcid":"0000-0002-3242-7020","id":"27EB676C-8706-11E9-9510-7717E6697425"}]},{"file":[{"content_type":"application/pdf","checksum":"05517674168a275c70f18e964ce33d8b","creator":"dernst","success":1,"file_name":"2026_NatureComm_Machnik.pdf","file_size":2345578,"date_updated":"2026-10-07T09:50:18Z","relation":"main_file","file_id":"23070","date_created":"2026-10-07T09:50:18Z","access_level":"open_access"}],"department":[{"_id":"MaRo"}],"license":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/","doi":"10.1038/s41467-026-76877-7","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"has_accepted_license":"1","type":"journal_article","supplementarymaterial":"no","date_created":"2026-10-04T22:01:53Z","oa_version":"Published Version","title":"Causal inference for multiple risk factors and diseases from genomics data","day":"25","publication_identifier":{"eissn":["2041-1723"]},"acknowledgement":"We thank Zoltan Kutalik andmembers of the Robinson group at ISTA for\r\ntheir comments, which improved this manuscript. We introduce Causal Inference GWAS, a graphical approach that selects genetic instruments from summary statistics controlling for linkage and pleiotropy, accommodates rare variants and binary outcomes, distinguishes direct from indirect risk factors in high dimensions, and flags latent confounding. Applied to 9 risk factors, 4 metabolic disease outcomes, and 8.4M variants across 458,747 UK Biobank individuals, our method runs in 20 minutes, identifying only 696 genome-wide valid instruments. We replicate nearly all previously reported risk factor-outcome paths, but find that most are indistinguishable from unmeasured confounding. This suggests robust biobank causal inference will require longitudinal and family data to resolve temporal precedence from reverse causation. Our approach offers a principled first step toward screening genuine causal signal from phenotypic correlation in biobank data.","lang":"eng"}],"related_material":{"record":[{"id":"18648","status":"public","relation":"earlier_version"}]},"author":[{"id":"3591A0AA-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","orcid":"0000-0001-6617-9742","full_name":"Machnik, Nick N","last_name":"Machnik","first_name":"Nick N"},{"id":"b9f6d5ef-7774-11eb-a47f-df2c75c02ee7","first_name":"Seyed Mahdi","full_name":"Mahmoudi, Seyed Mahdi","last_name":"Mahmoudi"},{"full_name":"Borczyk, Malgorzata","last_name":"Borczyk","first_name":"Malgorzata"},{"id":"30d4014e-7753-11eb-b44b-db6d61112e73","orcid":"0000-0002-5636-9259","full_name":"Krätschmer, Ilse","last_name":"Krätschmer","first_name":"Ilse"},{"full_name":"Bauer, Markus J.","last_name":"Bauer","first_name":"Markus J."},{"first_name":"Matthew Richard","full_name":"Robinson, Matthew Richard","last_name":"Robinson","orcid":"0000-0001-8982-8813","id":"E5D42276-F5DA-11E9-8E24-6303E6697425"}],"article_type":"original","OA_place":"publisher","user_id":"2DF688A6-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","year":"2026","researchdata_availability":"yes","DOAJ_listed":"1","_id":"23043","article_processing_charge":"Yes","oa":1,"volume":17,"fulldoi":"https://doi.org/10.1038/s41467-026-76877-7","tmp":{"image":"/images/cc_by_nc_nd.png","short":"CC BY-NC-ND (4.0)","legal_code_url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/legalcode","name":"Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International (CC BY-NC-ND 4.0)"},"acknowledged_ssus":[{"_id":"ScienComp"}]},{"publication_status":"published","dataavailabilitystatement":"The reduced 1D NIRSpec/G395M spectra, the MIRI LRS 1D extraction, and the MIRI MRS 1D extraction used in this work are publicly available on Zenodo at DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.21539999.\r\nFacilities: JWST - James Webb Space Telescope, IRAM:NOEMA. -\r\nSoftware: GalfitS (R. Our deep NIRSpec/\r\nG395M spectroscopy reveals unambiguous broad Balmer emission (FWHM = 2221 ± 20 km s\r\n−1\r\n), confirming a\r\nsuper-Eddington accreting black hole (BH) (λEdd = 2.7 ± 0.4) with a mass of\r\nlog(MBH/M ) = 7.55 ± 0.34,\r\nusing accretion-rate-corrected BH mass estimators. After subtracting the point source, we robustly detect stellar\r\nemission from the host galaxy across multiple NIRCam and MIRI filters. Our joint morphological-spectral\r\nanalysis yields a stellar mass of = ± * log(M /M ) 10.5 0.4\r\nand an intense star formation rate of\r\nSFR = 330 ± 97 M⊙ yr−1\r\n, confirming the host as a massive, dusty starburst galaxy. We find that GNz7q lies\r\non the local MBH–M* relation (MBH/M* ≃ 0.001) and is well positioned to evolve into the locus of massive Sloan\r\nDigital Sky Survey (SDSS) quasars with\r\nlog(MBH/M ) 9\r\nand M* ≈ 1011 M⊙ at z ∼ 6, owing to its remarkably\r\nrapid growth in both the BH and its host galaxy. This stands in stark contrast to many recently reported JWST\r\nactive galactic nucleus populations at similar redshifts, including the little red dots, whose weak or undetected star\r\nformation makes it difficult for them to grow into the massive galaxies hosting SDSS-like quasars. PS1 has been attributed roles in intracellular calcium homeostasis in the brain, as well as in the pancreatic beta cells, where it has been shown to be fundamental for the initial phase of glucose-induced insulin secretion. To gain mechanistic insight into beta cell autonomous function of PS1, we have examined various beta cell models and found that PS1 controls glycolytic flux of pancreatic beta cells by regulating sub-mitochondrial Ca2+ homeostasis. Transient knock down of PS1 yielded a glycolytic bottleneck at the step catalyzed by glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase, resulting in defective glucose responsiveness. Moreover, we show that PS1 is needed for the preservation of beta cell identity, likely due to its role in glycolysis. Finally, we show that mouse islets from an in vivo model of AD mimic the defective glucose responsiveness seen in beta cells with transient PS1 knock down, while the identity loss and whole-body glucose homeostasis are not severely impacted, suggesting an adaptive response. Thus, the current work highlights beta cell autonomous role of PS1 and adds a layer of complexity in its impact on whole body metabolism."}],"article_type":"original","author":[{"last_name":"Koshenov","full_name":"Koshenov, Zhanat","first_name":"Zhanat"},{"full_name":"Postic, Sandra","last_name":"Postic","first_name":"Sandra"},{"first_name":"Gabriela","full_name":"Schoiswohl, Gabriela","last_name":"Schoiswohl"},{"first_name":"Savina","last_name":"Van Amsterdam","full_name":"Van Amsterdam, Savina"},{"full_name":"Hois-Zelinka, Victoria","last_name":"Hois-Zelinka","first_name":"Victoria"},{"last_name":"Oflaz","full_name":"Oflaz, Furkan E.","first_name":"Furkan E."},{"first_name":"Rene","full_name":"Rost, Rene","last_name":"Rost"},{"first_name":"Oleksandra","last_name":"Tiapko","full_name":"Tiapko, Oleksandra"},{"last_name":"Gottschalk","full_name":"Gottschalk, Benjamin","first_name":"Benjamin"},{"first_name":"Martin","last_name":"Hirtl","full_name":"Hirtl, Martin"},{"first_name":"Olaf G.","last_name":"Bachkoenig","full_name":"Bachkoenig, Olaf G."},{"first_name":"Aigerim","full_name":"Koshenova, Aigerim","last_name":"Koshenova"},{"full_name":"Erdogan, Yusuf C.","last_name":"Erdogan","first_name":"Yusuf C."},{"first_name":"Adlet","last_name":"Sagintayev","full_name":"Sagintayev, Adlet"},{"last_name":"Krnjic","full_name":"Krnjic, Anita","first_name":"Anita"},{"full_name":"Pfabe, Johannes U.","last_name":"Pfabe","first_name":"Johannes U."},{"id":"35F0286E-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","first_name":"Srdjan","last_name":"Sarikas","full_name":"Sarikas, Srdjan"},{"first_name":"Bernhard","full_name":"Hochreiter, Bernhard","last_name":"Hochreiter","id":"e6cab3de-17f6-11ed-9210-c1e42e045e9d"},{"first_name":"Juergen","full_name":"Gindlhuber, Juergen","last_name":"Gindlhuber"},{"full_name":"Schittmayer, Matthias","last_name":"Schittmayer","first_name":"Matthias"},{"last_name":"Tadic","full_name":"Tadic, Jelena","first_name":"Jelena"},{"first_name":"Barbara","last_name":"Ehall","full_name":"Ehall, Barbara"},{"first_name":"Frank","last_name":"Madeo","full_name":"Madeo, Frank"},{"first_name":"Tobias","last_name":"Madl","full_name":"Madl, Tobias"},{"last_name":"Malli","full_name":"Malli, Roland","first_name":"Roland"},{"first_name":"Ruth","last_name":"Birner-Gruenberger","full_name":"Birner-Gruenberger, Ruth"},{"first_name":"Thomas","last_name":"Pieber","full_name":"Pieber, Thomas"},{"last_name":"Eisenberg","full_name":"Eisenberg, Tobias","first_name":"Tobias"},{"last_name":"Slak Rupnik","full_name":"Slak Rupnik, Marjan","first_name":"Marjan"},{"first_name":"Wolfgang F.","full_name":"Graier, Wolfgang F.","last_name":"Graier"}],"OA_place":"publisher","user_id":"2DF688A6-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","researchdata_availability":"upon request","year":"2026","external_id":{"pmid":["42387039"]},"DOAJ_listed":"1","_id":"23148","oa":1,"article_processing_charge":"Yes","volume":9,"fulldoi":"https://doi.org/10.1038/s42003-026-10581-6","tmp":{"image":"/images/cc_by.png","short":"CC BY (4.0)","legal_code_url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/legalcode","name":"Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International Public License (CC-BY 4.0)"}},{"tmp":{"image":"/images/cc_by.png","short":"CC BY (4.0)","legal_code_url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/legalcode","name":"Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International Public License (CC-BY 4.0)"},"fulldoi":"https://doi.org/10.1093/mnras/stag1839","volume":552,"oa":1,"article_processing_charge":"Yes","_id":"23150","DOAJ_listed":"1","external_id":{"arxiv":["2511.04736"]},"researchdata_availability":"yes","year":"2026","user_id":"2DF688A6-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","OA_place":"publisher","article_type":"original","author":[{"first_name":"Matthew T.","full_name":"Scoggins, Matthew T.","last_name":"Scoggins"},{"id":"7c006e8c-cc0d-11ee-8322-cb904ef76f36","orcid":"0000-0003-3633-5403","full_name":"Haiman, Zoltán","last_name":"Haiman","first_name":"Zoltán"},{"last_name":"Pacucci","full_name":"Pacucci, Fabio","first_name":"Fabio"}],"abstract":[{"lang":"eng","text":"High-redshift supermassive black holes (SMBHs) have challenged our understanding of black hole formation and growth. The ‘heavy-seed’ pathway eases the problem with the progenitors of these SMBHs having birth masses up to∼105 M\u0003. Here, we investigate the possibility that a local dwarf galaxy, Leo I, harbours a heavy-seed descendant. Using Monte Carlo merger trees to generate the merger histories of 1000 dark matter haloes similar to the Milky Way (MW), we search for Leo- like satellite haloes and investigate the probability that the progenitors of these satellites formed a heavy seed. We derive the likelihood of such ‘heavy-seed survivors’ (HSSs) across various formation and survival criteria as well as Leo-similarity criteria. We find that the virial temperature for the onset of atomic cooling and rapid gas infall that yields heavy seeds, Tact , has the largest impact on HSS frequency. We find HSSs in a fraction 0.7 per cent, 18.1 per cent, and 96.5 per cent of MW-like haloes when Tact is set to 9000, 7000, and 5000 K, respectively. For the canonical atomic-cooling threshold ( Tact \u0002 8000 K), the HSS fraction is\u0003 1per cent , indicating that Leo I hosting a heavy-seed descendant is unlikely under well-motivated physical assumptions. Higher HSS fractions occur only under optimistic and currently unsubstantiated assumptions on Tact . Nevertheless, these results motivate future work that clarifies the possibility of heavy-seed BH formation in pristine haloes with nominal virial temperatures below 8000 K. This may motivate Leo I as a target for disentangling heavy seeds from other SMBH formation mechanisms."}],"quality_controlled":"1","publication":"Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society","publication_status":"published","das_tickbox":"1","date_published":"2026-11-01T00:00:00Z","dataavailabilitystatement":"The code used to analyse the merger trees and generate figures for this manuscript is available at this GitHub repository. In [S II], the number of detected filaments increases by about an order of\r\nmagnitude compared to previous studies. The imaging further reveals that the filaments are not smooth radial\r\nstreaks, but instead are composed of cascades of knots or clumps. The images in [O III] yield the first confirmation\r\nthat previously detected diffuse [O III] emission in fact originates from the same [S II] filaments. We measure a\r\nnebula center consistent with the position of the central star, indicating that the remnant has not received a large\r\ntransverse kick. The 3σ upper limit on the velocity of the stellar kick is ≲100 km s\r\n−1\r\n. Cross-sectional profiles of\r\nthe filaments in [S II] and [O III] show a central peak on top of a nebula background, the latter being likely due to\r\ndiffuse emission or unresolved filaments. The median [S II] width of 0.7 is slightly broader than the 0.50 seeing,\r\nproviding some evidence of partially resolved filaments and implying a characteristic knot diameter of ∼1016 cm.\r\nThe ≈1″ widths measured in [O III] are consistent with the poorer seeing of the oxygen images. The discovery of\r\nthis clumpy substructure provides a new observational constraint on models for the origin and evolution of the\r\nremarkable filamentary ejecta of Pa 30.","lang":"eng"}],"quality_controlled":"1","publication":"The Astrophysical Journal","DOAJ_listed":"1","_id":"23151","external_id":{"arxiv":["2610.06424"]},"researchdata_availability":"no","year":"2026","OA_place":"publisher","user_id":"2DF688A6-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","oa":1,"article_processing_charge":"Yes","tmp":{"image":"/images/cc_by.png","short":"CC BY (4.0)","legal_code_url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/legalcode","name":"Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International Public License (CC-BY 4.0)"},"fulldoi":"https://doi.org/10.3847/1538-4357/ae9cb2","volume":1010},{"intvolume":" 314","citation":{"ista":"Bernert C, Derenthal U, Ortmann J, Wilsch FA. 2026. Applying ac driving to the junction has proven to be a viable and less invasive way to extract information about the few lowest harmonics of the CPR, by locating the integer and fractional Shapiro steps in the 𝐼⁢𝑉-curve of the driven junction. Here, we present an alternative driving-based method that allows to extract the full harmonic content of a CPR in a relatively noninvasive way, by fitting the measured critical currents of the driven junction as a function of driving power. We test our method, both using numerical simulations and in experiments, and we show that it works accurately."}],"article_type":"original","author":[{"first_name":"Maxim","full_name":"Tjøtta, Maxim","last_name":"Tjøtta"},{"id":"de191434-4e7e-11ef-bf4b-9a056fc19fc3","orcid":"0009-0007-5829-7707","full_name":"Shah, Devashish C","last_name":"Shah","first_name":"Devashish C"},{"id":"f05345fd-900f-11f1-bfd8-8c0b6eadcc7f","first_name":"Kanishk","full_name":"Modi, Kanishk","last_name":"Modi"},{"last_name":"Valentini","full_name":"Valentini, Marco","first_name":"Marco","id":"C0BB2FAC-D767-11E9-B658-BC13E6697425"},{"first_name":"Rubén","full_name":"Seoane Souto, Rubén","last_name":"Seoane Souto"},{"orcid":"0000-0001-8342-202X","id":"38DB5788-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","first_name":"Georgios","full_name":"Katsaros, Georgios","last_name":"Katsaros"},{"last_name":"Danon","full_name":"Danon, Jeroen","first_name":"Jeroen"}],"publication_status":"published","dataavailabilitystatement":"The data that support the findings of this article are openly available at [10.5281/zenodo.22646275].","OA_type":"green","date_updated":"2026-10-19T07:25:01Z","das_tickbox":"1","date_published":"2026-10-01T00:00:00Z"},{"date_created":"2026-10-18T22:01:53Z","supplementarymaterial":"yes","has_accepted_license":"1","type":"journal_article","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"doi":"10.1103/p328-62sl","department":[{"_id":"GradSch"},{"_id":"ZoHa"}],"file":[{"date_updated":"2026-10-19T08:06:17Z","file_size":3535182,"relation":"main_file","file_name":"2026_PhysicalReviewD_Park.pdf","file_id":"23167","date_created":"2026-10-19T08:06:17Z","access_level":"open_access","content_type":"application/pdf","checksum":"764bd6512975216dd63655da64ceeb95","success":1,"creator":"dernst"}],"acknowledgement":"We acknowledge support by NASA Grants No. 80NSSC22K0822 and No. 80NSSC24K0440 (Z. H). Rubin Observatory has now seen first light, and over a 10 year duration, Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) is projected to catalog tens of millions of quasars, many of which are expected to be associated with subparsec supermassive black hole binaries (SMBHBs). Out of these SMBHBs, up to thousands of relatively massive binary-quasars are expected to exhibit gravitational self-lensing flares (SLFs) that last for at least 20–30 days. We assess the effectiveness of the Lomb-Scargle (LS) periodogram and matched filters (MFs) as methods for systematic searches for these binaries, using toy-models of hydrodynamical, Doppler, and self-lensing variability from equal-mass, eccentric SMBHBs. We inject SLFs into random realizations of damped random walk (DRW) lightcurves, representing stochastic quasar variability, and compute the LS periodogram with and without the SLF. We find that periodograms of SLF+DRW light-curves do not have maximum peak heights that could not arise from DRW-only periodograms. On the other hand, the matched filter signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) can distinguish SLFs from noise even with LSST-like cadences and DRW noise. Furthermore, we develop a three-step procedure with matched filters, which can also recover injected binary parameters from these light-curves. We expect this method to be computationally efficient enough to be applicable to millions of quasar light-curves in LSST.","lang":"eng"}],"quality_controlled":"1","publication":"Physical Review D","tmp":{"image":"/images/cc_by.png","short":"CC BY (4.0)","legal_code_url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/legalcode","name":"Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International Public License (CC-BY 4.0)"},"fulldoi":"https://doi.org/10.1103/p328-62sl","volume":113,"article_processing_charge":"Yes (in subscription journal)","oa":1},{"author":[{"last_name":"Hollom","full_name":"Hollom, Lawrence","first_name":"Lawrence"},{"first_name":"Lyuben","last_name":"Lichev","full_name":"Lichev, Lyuben","id":"9aa8388e-d003-11ee-8458-c4c1d7447977"},{"last_name":"Mond","full_name":"Mond, Adva","first_name":"Adva"},{"first_name":"Julien","last_name":"Portier","full_name":"Portier, Julien"},{"id":"1917d194-076e-11ed-97cd-837255f88785","first_name":"Yiting","last_name":"Wang","full_name":"Wang, Yiting"}],"article_type":"original","abstract":[{"lang":"eng","text":"In this work we establish several monotonicity and decomposition results in the framework of random regular graphs. However, these DNA mimic foldamers have until now mainly consisted of a single repeat motif, like a poly(dA:dT) DNA duplex, and contained limited sequence information. Here, we introduce new monomers designed to display different chemical functionalities in the major groove of the DNA mimics. Four new Fmoc-protected amino acid monomers have been synthesized and incorporated into oligomers. Sixteen foldamer sequences were prepared on solid phase. Their conformation in solution and in the solid state and their conformational dynamics were investigated using NMR, circular dichroism, molecular modeling, and X-ray crystallography. The results show that three of four new monomers behaved as designed, and that their introduction enhances the conformational dynamics of the DNA mimic foldamers. In a fourth case, conformational behavior proved to be more complex than expected. The modified sequences retained an ability to bind to bacterial histone-like protein HU. These results showcase design strategies to manipulate large molecular biomimetics where not only side chains but also main chain components are varied. The new monomers pave the way to complex DNA mimic foldamer sequences targeting proteins that recognize sequence-selective DNA-binding proteins such as transcription factors or restriction enzymes.","lang":"eng"}],"publication":"Chemical Science","quality_controlled":"1","_id":"22012","DOAJ_listed":"1","external_id":{"pmid":["42388815"]},"year":"2026","researchdata_availability":"yes","user_id":"2DF688A6-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","OA_place":"publisher","das_tickbox":"1","date_published":"2026-08-19T00:00:00Z","date_updated":"2026-10-19T08:35:08Z","dataavailabilitystatement":"CCDC 2514117, 2514118, 2286782 and 2478322 (compound 1, compound 1d, oligomer 5, and oligomer 6, respectively) contain the supplementary crystallographic data for this paper.54a–d \r\n\r\nThe supporting data have been provided as part of the supplementary information (SI). The degree of classicality is measured by a\r\nsmall parameter ε << 1. In this scaling the particle evolves on microscopic times, whereas\r\nthe field exhibits nontrivial dynamics only on the macroscopic scale t = O(ε^−2). The natural\r\nsemiclassical model is the coupled Schrödinger–Klein–Gordon (SKG) system, which\r\nencodes the time-scale separation through an explicit ε-dependence. Based on this scale separation\r\nin SKG, we apply the adiabatic principle to derive a new PDE for the classical field,\r\nthe ε-free adiabatic Klein–Gordon (aKG) equation, where the field is driven by the instantaneous\r\nground state of the particle. Our main result is a norm approximation of the Nelson\r\ndynamics by the aKGsolution corrected by a quasi-free fluctuation dynamics around the classical\r\nfield, generated by a renormalized Bogoliubov–Nelson Hamiltonian. As a corollary, we\r\nobtain convergence of the reduced one-body densities for both subsystems, where the fluctuation\r\ncorrection vanishes, thereby justifying aKG as a semiclassical Born–Oppenheimer\r\ntype approximation of the renormalized Nelson model.","lang":"eng"}],"external_id":{"pmid":["42865432"],"arxiv":["2509.14226"]},"_id":"23153","OA_place":"publisher","user_id":"2DF688A6-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","year":"2026","researchdata_availability":"no","OA_type":"hybrid","date_updated":"2026-10-19T07:55:13Z","dataavailabilitystatement":"No data are associated with this article.","date_published":"2026-10-01T00:00:00Z","das_tickbox":"1","publication_status":"published","pmid":1,"publisher":"Springer","ddc":["500"],"issue":"10","article_number":"270","file_date_updated":"2026-10-19T07:53:14Z","arxiv":1,"status":"public","month":"10","scopus_import":"1","PlanS_conform":"1","citation":{"chicago":"Brooks, Morris, and David Johannes Mitrouskas. “Adiabatic Klein–Gordon Dynamics for the Renormalized Nelson Model.” <i>Calculus of Variations and Partial Differential Equations</i>.
