In this work, we introduce a new training strategy, iCaRL, that allows learning in such a class-incremental way: only the training data for a small number of classes has to be present at the same time and new classes can be added progressively. iCaRL learns strong classifiers and a data representation simultaneously. This distinguishes it from earlier works that were fundamentally limited to fixed data representations and therefore incompatible with deep learning architectures. We show by experiments on CIFAR-100 and ImageNet ILSVRC 2012 data that iCaRL can learn many classes incrementally over a long period of time where other strategies quickly fail. In contrast to previous work, which required that annotated training data must be available for all tasks, we consider a new setting, in which for some tasks, potentially most of them, only unlabeled training data is provided. Consequently, to solve all tasks, information must be transferred between tasks with labels and tasks without labels. Focusing on an instance-based transfer method we analyze two variants of this setting: when the set of labeled tasks is fixed, and when it can be actively selected by the learner. We state and prove a generalization bound that covers both scenarios and derive from it an algorithm for making the choice of labeled tasks (in the active case) and for transferring information between the tasks in a principled way. We also illustrate the effectiveness of the algorithm on synthetic and real data. Owing to advances in laser technology, electric fields comparable to those electrons experience in atoms are readily generated and open opportunities to dynamically investigate the process of electron tunneling through the potential barrier formed by the superposition of both laser and atomic fields. Attosecond-time and angstrom-space resolution of the strong laser-field technique allow to address fundamental questions related to tunneling, which are still open and debated: Which time is spent under the barrier and what momentum is picked up by the particle in the meantime? In this combined experimental and theoretical study we demonstrate that for strong-field ionization the leading quantum mechanical Wigner treatment for the time resolved description of tunneling is valid. We achieve a high sensitivity on the tunneling barrier and unambiguously isolate its effects by performing a differential study of two systems with almost identical tunneling geometry. Moreover, working with a low frequency laser, we essentially limit the non-adiabaticity of the process as a major source of uncertainty. The agreement between experiment and theory implies two substantial corrections with respect to the widely employed quasiclassical treatment: In addition to a non-vanishing longitudinal momentum along the laser field-direction we provide clear evidence for a non-zero tunneling time delay. This addresses also the fundamental question how the transition occurs from the tunnel barrier to free space classical evolution of the ejected electron."}],"language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"citation":{"chicago":"Camus, Nicolas, Enderalp Yakaboylu, Lutz Fechner, Michael Klaiber, Martin Laux, Yonghao Mi, Karen Hatsagortsyan, Thomas Pfeifer, Cristoph Keitel, and Robert Moshammer. “Experimental Evidence for Wigner’s Tunneling Time,” Vol. 999. A fundamental barrier when parallelizing SGD is the high bandwidth cost of communicating gradient updates between nodes; consequently, several lossy compresion heuristics have been proposed, by which nodes only communicate quantized gradients. Although effective in practice, these heuristics do not always converge. In this paper, we propose Quantized SGD (QSGD), a family of compression schemes with convergence guarantees and good practical performance. QSGD allows the user to smoothly trade off communication bandwidth and convergence time: nodes can adjust the number of bits sent per iteration, at the cost of possibly higher variance. We show that this trade-off is inherent, in the sense that improving it past some threshold would violate information-theoretic lower bounds. QSGD guarantees convergence for convex and non-convex objectives, under asynchrony, and can be extended to stochastic variance-reduced techniques. When applied to training deep neural networks for image classification and automated speech recognition, QSGD leads to significant reductions in end-to-end training time. For instance, on 16GPUs, we can train the ResNet-152 network to full accuracy on ImageNet 1.8 × faster than the full-precision variant. We examine training at reduced precision, both from a theoretical and practical perspective, and ask: is it possible to train models at end-to-end low precision with provable guarantees? Can this lead to consistent order-of-magnitude speedups? We mainly focus on linear models, and the answer is yes for linear models. We develop a simple framework called ZipML based on one simple but novel strategy called double sampling. Our ZipML framework is able to execute training at low precision with no bias, guaranteeing convergence, whereas naive quanti- zation would introduce significant bias. We val- idate our framework across a range of applica- tions, and show that it enables an FPGA proto- type that is up to 6.5 × faster than an implemen- tation using full 32-bit precision. We further de- velop a variance-optimal stochastic quantization strategy and show that it can make a significant difference in a variety of settings. When applied to linear models together with double sampling, we save up to another 1.7 × in data movement compared with uniform quantization. When training deep networks with quantized models, we achieve higher accuracy than the state-of-the- art XNOR-Net. There exist two different views: (i) the expectation semantics, where the goal is to optimize the expected mean-payoff objective, and (ii) the satisfaction semantics, where the goal is to maximize the probability of runs such that the mean-payoff value stays above a given vector. We consider optimization with respect to both objectives at once, thus unifying the existing semantics. Precisely, the goal is to optimize the expectation while ensuring the satisfaction constraint. Our problem captures the notion of optimization with respect to strategies that are risk-averse (i.e., ensure certain probabilistic guarantee). Our main results are as follows: First, we present algorithms for the decision problems which are always polynomial in the size of the MDP. We also show that an approximation of the Pareto-curve can be computed in time polynomial in the size of the MDP, and the approximation factor, but exponential in the number of dimensions. Second, we present a complete characterization of the strategy complexity (in terms of memory bounds and randomization) required to solve our problem. We study the edit distance computation problem between pushdown automata and their subclasses. The problem of computing edit distance to a pushdown automaton is undecidable, and in practice, the interesting question is to compute the edit distance from a pushdown automaton (the implementation, a standard model for programs with recursion) to a regular language (the specification). In this work, we present a complete picture of decidability and complexity for the following problems: (1) deciding whether, for a given threshold k , the edit distance from a pushdown automaton to a finite automaton is at most k , and (2) deciding whether the edit distance from a pushdown automaton to a finite automaton is finite. We show how to compute the winning set on n vertices for (1) parity-3 (aka one-pair Streett) objectives in game graphs in time O(n5/2) and for (2) k-pair Streett objectives in graphs in time O(n2+nklogn). For both problems this gives faster algorithms for dense graphs and represents the first improvement in asymptotic running time in 15 years."}],"type":"journal_article","corr_author":"1","publist_id":"7357","publication":"Logical Methods in Computer Science","oa_version":"Published Version","scopus_import":"1","date_created":"2018-12-11T11:46:37Z","project":[{"_id":"2584A770-B435-11E9-9278-68D0E5697425","name":"Modern Graph Algorithmic Techniques in Formal Verification","call_identifier":"FWF","grant_number":"P 23499-N23"},{"_id":"25863FF4-B435-11E9-9278-68D0E5697425","name":"Game Theory","call_identifier":"FWF","grant_number":"S11407"},{"grant_number":"ICT15-003","name":"Efficient Algorithms for Computer Aided Verification","_id":"25892FC0-B435-11E9-9278-68D0E5697425"},{"_id":"2581B60A-B435-11E9-9278-68D0E5697425","call_identifier":"FP7","name":"Quantitative Graph Games: Theory and Applications","grant_number":"279307"}],"arxiv":1,"ddc":["004"],"pubrep_id":"956","date_updated":"2026-07-06T13:28:05Z","intvolume":" 13"},{"article_processing_charge":"No","publication_identifier":{"issn":["1095-0761"]},"day":"01","department":[{"_id":"RoSe"}],"user_id":"2DF688A6-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","title":"Bogoliubov correction to the mean-field dynamics of interacting bosons","oa":1,"quality_controlled":"1","_id":"484","date_published":"2017-01-01T00:00:00Z","das_tickbox":"1","doi":"10.4310/ATMP.2017.v21.n3.a4","isi":1,"publisher":"International Press of Boston","page":"683 - 738","author":[{"id":"404092F4-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","full_name":"Nam, Phan","first_name":"Phan","last_name":"Nam"},{"last_name":"Napiórkowski","first_name":"Marcin M","full_name":"Napiórkowski, Marcin M","id":"4197AD04-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87"}],"volume":21,"issue":"3","month":"01","year":"2017","publication_status":"published","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"ec_funded":1,"citation":{"chicago":"Nam, Phan, and Marcin M Napiórkowski. “Bogoliubov Correction to the Mean-Field Dynamics of Interacting Bosons.” Advances in Theoretical and Mathematical Physics. Subsequently, we describe two new generative image models that exploit different image transformations as latent variables: a quantized grayscale view of the image or a multi-resolution image pyramid. The proposed models tackle two known shortcomings of existing PixelCNN models: 1) their tendency to focus on low-level image details, while largely ignoring high-level image information, such as object shapes, and 2) their computationally costly procedure for image sampling. We experimentally demonstrate benefits of our LatentPixelCNN models, in particular showing that they produce much more realistically looking image samples than previous state-of-the-art probabilistic models. Formally, we analyze the family Z< r(f) := (g-1(0): ||g - f|| < r) of all zero sets of all continuous maps g closer to f than r in the max-norm. All of these sets are outside A := (x: |f(x)| ≥ r) and we claim that Z< r(f) is fully determined by A and an element of a certain cohomotopy group which (by a recent result) is computable whenever the dimension of X is at most 2n - 3. By considering all r > 0 simultaneously, the pointed cohomotopy groups form a persistence module-a structure leading to persistence diagrams as in the case of persistent homology or well groups. Eventually, we get a descriptor of persistent robust properties of zero sets that has better descriptive power (Theorem A) and better computability status (Theorem B) than the established well diagrams. Moreover, if we endow every point of each zero set with gradients of the perturbation, the robust description of the zero sets by elements of cohomotopy groups is in some sense the best possible (Theorem C)."}],"external_id":{"isi":["000440749400010"],"arxiv":["1507.04310"]},"status":"public","publist_id":"7246","oa_version":"Submitted Version","date_created":"2018-12-11T11:47:14Z","scopus_import":"1","publication":"Homology, Homotopy and Applications","type":"journal_article","corr_author":"1","main_file_link":[{"open_access":"1","url":"https://arxiv.org/abs/1507.04310"}],"project":[{"grant_number":"291734","name":"International IST Postdoc Fellowship Programme","call_identifier":"FP7","_id":"25681D80-B435-11E9-9278-68D0E5697425"},{"grant_number":"701309","call_identifier":"H2020","name":"Atomic Resolution Structures of Mitochondrial Respiratory Chain Supercomplexes","_id":"2590DB08-B435-11E9-9278-68D0E5697425"}],"date_updated":"2026-07-06T13:38:28Z","arxiv":1,"intvolume":" 19","publication_identifier":{"issn":["1532-0073"]},"article_processing_charge":"No","department":[{"_id":"UlWa"},{"_id":"HeEd"}],"day":"01","oa":1,"title":"Persistence of zero sets","user_id":"2DF688A6-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","_id":"568","date_published":"2017-01-01T00:00:00Z","quality_controlled":"1","das_tickbox":"1","publisher":"International Press of Boston","isi":1,"doi":"10.4310/HHA.2017.v19.n2.a16"},{"file":[{"file_size":544042,"date_updated":"2020-07-14T12:47:47Z","file_id":"5077","file_name":"IST-2018-984-v1+1_Patakova_on_the_nonexistence_of_k-reptile_simplices_in_R_3_and_R_4_2017.pdf","checksum":"a431e573e31df13bc0f66de3061006ec","access_level":"open_access","relation":"main_file","creator":"system","content_type":"application/pdf","date_created":"2018-12-12T10:14:25Z"}],"publisher":"International Press of Boston","_id":"701","quality_controlled":"1","date_published":"2017-07-14T00:00:00Z","das_tickbox":"1","day":"14","department":[{"_id":"UlWa"}],"user_id":"2DF688A6-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","oa":1,"title":"On the nonexistence of k reptile simplices in ℝ^3 and ℝ^4","article_processing_charge":"No","publication_identifier":{"issn":["1077-8926"]},"intvolume":" 24","date_updated":"2026-07-06T13:38:44Z","ddc":["500"],"pubrep_id":"984","citation":{"chicago":"Kynčl, Jan, and Zuzana Patakova. “On the Nonexistence of k Reptile Simplices in ℝ^3 and ℝ^4.” The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics. For d = 2, triangular k-reptiles exist for all k of the form a^2, 3a^2 or a^2+b^2 and they have been completely characterized by Snover, Waiveris, and Williams. On the other hand, the only k-reptile simplices that are known for d ≥ 3, have k = m^d, where m is a positive integer. We substantially simplify the proof by Matoušek and the second author that for d = 3, k-reptile tetrahedra can exist only for k = m^3. We then prove a weaker analogue of this result for d = 4 by showing that four-dimensional k-reptile simplices can exist only for k = m^2.","lang":"eng"}],"status":"public","has_accepted_license":"1","issue":"3","volume":24,"month":"07","year":"2017","file_date_updated":"2020-07-14T12:47:47Z","publication_status":"published","page":"1-44","author":[{"last_name":"Kynčl","first_name":"Jan","full_name":"Kynčl, Jan"},{"last_name":"Patakova","orcid":"0000-0002-3975-1683","first_name":"Zuzana","full_name":"Patakova, Zuzana","id":"48B57058-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87"}]},{"author":[{"last_name":"Schmidt","first_name":"Tom","full_name":"Schmidt, Tom"},{"orcid":"0000-0002-8548-5240","first_name":"Nicholas H","last_name":"Barton","full_name":"Barton, Nicholas H","id":"4880FE40-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87"},{"first_name":"Gordana","last_name":"Rasic","full_name":"Rasic, Gordana"},{"full_name":"Turley, Andrew","last_name":"Turley","first_name":"Andrew"},{"first_name":"Brian","last_name":"Montgomery","full_name":"Montgomery, Brian"},{"full_name":"Iturbe Ormaetxe, Inaki","last_name":"Iturbe Ormaetxe","first_name":"Inaki"},{"full_name":"Cook, Peter","first_name":"Peter","last_name":"Cook"},{"full_name":"Ryan, Peter","last_name":"Ryan","first_name":"Peter"},{"first_name":"Scott","last_name":"Ritchie","full_name":"Ritchie, Scott"},{"full_name":"Hoffmann, Ary","last_name":"Hoffmann","first_name":"Ary"},{"full_name":"O’Neill, Scott","last_name":"O’Neill","first_name":"Scott"},{"last_name":"Turelli","first_name":"Michael","full_name":"Turelli, Michael"}],"year":"2017","file_date_updated":"2020-07-14T12:48:16Z","publication_status":"published","volume":15,"related_material":{"record":[{"status":"public","id":"9856","relation":"research_data"},{"status":"public","id":"9858","relation":"research_data"},{"id":"9857","status":"public","relation":"research_data"}]},"issue":"5","month":"05","type":"journal_article","oa_version":"Published Version","date_created":"2018-12-11T11:49:22Z","scopus_import":"1","publication":"PLoS Biology","publist_id":"6464","status":"public","external_id":{"isi":["000402520000012"]},"has_accepted_license":"1","abstract":[{"lang":"eng","text":"Dengue-suppressing Wolbachia strains are promising tools for arbovirus control, particularly as they have the potential to self-spread following local introductions. To test this, we followed the frequency of the transinfected Wolbachia strain wMel through Ae. aegypti in Cairns, Australia, following releases at 3 nonisolated locations within the city in early 2013. Spatial spread was analysed graphically using interpolation and by fitting a statistical model describing the position and width of the wave. For the larger 2 of the 3 releases (covering 0.97 km2 and 0.52 km2), we observed slow but steady spatial spread, at about 100–200 m per year, roughly consistent with theoretical predictions. In contrast, the smallest release (0.11 km2) produced erratic temporal and spatial dynamics, with little evidence of spread after 2 years. This is consistent with the prediction concerning fitness-decreasing Wolbachia transinfections that a minimum release area is needed to achieve stable local establishment and spread in continuous habitats. Our graphical and likelihood analyses produced broadly consistent estimates of wave speed and wave width. Spread at all sites was spatially heterogeneous, suggesting that environmental heterogeneity will affect large-scale Wolbachia transformations of urban mosquito populations. Understanding molecular processes in the presence of such a many-particle bath is inherently challenging, and usually requires large-scale numerical computations. Here, we present an alternative approach to the problem, based on the notion of the angulon quasiparticle. We show that molecules rotating inside superfluid helium nanodroplets and Bose–Einstein condensates form angulons, and therefore can be described by straightforward solutions of a simple microscopic Hamiltonian. Casting the problem in the language of angulons allows us not only to greatly simplify it, but also to gain insights into the origins of the observed phenomena and to make predictions for future experimental studies.","lang":"eng"}],"type":"book_chapter","main_file_link":[{"open_access":"1","url":"https://arxiv.org/abs/1703.06753"}],"oa_version":"Submitted Version","publication":"Cold Chemistry: Molecular Scattering and Reactivity Near Absolute Zero ","date_created":"2018-12-11T11:47:27Z","publist_id":"7201","scopus_import":"1","arxiv":1,"date_updated":"2026-07-07T05:50:51Z","intvolume":" 11","page":"444 - 495","author":[{"orcid":"0000-0002-6990-7802","first_name":"Mikhail","last_name":"Lemeshko","full_name":"Lemeshko, Mikhail","id":"37CB05FA-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87"},{"first_name":"Richard","last_name":"Schmidt","full_name":"Schmidt, Richard"}],"alternative_title":["Theoretical and Computational Chemistry Series"],"series_title":"Theoretical and Computational Chemistry Series","month":"12","volume":11,"publication_status":"published","year":"2017","_id":"604","quality_controlled":"1","date_published":"2017-12-14T00:00:00Z","das_tickbox":"1","publisher":"Royal Society of Chemistry","doi":"10.1039/9781782626800-00444","publication_identifier":{"issn":["2041-3181"]},"article_processing_charge":"No","department":[{"_id":"MiLe"}],"editor":[{"first_name":"Oliver","last_name":"Dulieu","full_name":"Dulieu, Oliver"},{"first_name":"Andreas","last_name":"Osterwalder","full_name":"Osterwalder, Andreas"}],"day":"14","title":"Molecular impurities interacting with a many-particle environment: From ultracold gases to helium nanodroplets","oa":1,"user_id":"2DF688A6-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87"},{"department":[{"_id":"GaTk"}],"day":"26","title":"Phase transitions in integer linear problems","oa":1,"user_id":"2DF688A6-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","publication_identifier":{"issn":["1742-5468"]},"article_processing_charge":"No","publisher":"IOP Publishing","doi":"10.1088/1742-5468/aa85c3","isi":1,"article_number":"093404","_id":"823","quality_controlled":"1","date_published":"2017-09-26T00:00:00Z","das_tickbox":"1","month":"09","volume":2017,"issue":"9","publication_status":"published","year":"2017","author":[{"first_name":"Simona","last_name":"Colabrese","full_name":"Colabrese, Simona"},{"last_name":"De Martino","first_name":"Daniele","orcid":"0000-0002-5214-4706","id":"3FF5848A-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","full_name":"De Martino, Daniele"},{"last_name":"Leuzzi","first_name":"Luca","full_name":"Leuzzi, Luca"},{"full_name":"Marinari, Enzo","first_name":"Enzo","last_name":"Marinari"}],"project":[{"grant_number":"291734","call_identifier":"FP7","_id":"25681D80-B435-11E9-9278-68D0E5697425","name":"International IST Postdoc Fellowship Programme"}],"arxiv":1,"date_updated":"2026-07-07T13:11:04Z","intvolume":" 2017","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"citation":{"chicago":"Colabrese, Simona, Daniele De Martino, Luca Leuzzi, and Enzo Marinari. “Phase Transitions in Integer Linear Problems.” Journal of Statistical Mechanics: Theory and Experiment. However, in many real-life situations, individuals can decide to opt out of an interaction depending on the information they have about the opponent. We consider a simple evolutionary game theoretic model to study such a scenario, where at each encounter between two individuals the type of the opponent (cooperator/defector) is known with some probability, and where each individual either accepts or opts out of the interaction. If the type of the opponent is unknown, a trustful individual accepts the interaction, whereas a suspicious individual opts out of the interaction. If either of the two individuals opt out both individuals remain without an interaction. We show that in the prisoners dilemma optional interactions along with suspicious behaviour facilitates the emergence of trustful cooperation.","lang":"eng"}],"has_accepted_license":"1","status":"public","external_id":{"isi":["000412039800007"],"pmid":["28867224"]},"date_created":"2018-12-11T11:48:16Z","oa_version":"Submitted Version","publication":"Journal of Theoretical Biology","publist_id":"6923","scopus_import":"1","type":"journal_article","corr_author":"1","month":"11","volume":433,"publication_status":"published","file_date_updated":"2020-07-14T12:47:58Z","year":"2017","page":"64 - 72","pmid":1,"author":[{"first_name":"Tadeas","last_name":"Priklopil","full_name":"Priklopil, Tadeas","id":"3C869AA0-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87"},{"full_name":"Chatterjee, Krishnendu","id":"2E5DCA20-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","last_name":"Chatterjee","orcid":"0000-0002-4561-241X","first_name":"Krishnendu"},{"full_name":"Nowak, Martin","first_name":"Martin","last_name":"Nowak"}]}]
