However, the monomeric PSI structure has not yet been reported despite long-standing interest in its structure and extensive spectroscopic characterization of the loss of red chlorophylls upon monomerization. Here, we describe the structure of monomeric PSI from Thermosynechococcus elongatus BP-1. Comparison with the trimer structure gave detailed insights into monomerization-induced changes in both the central trimerization domain and the peripheral regions of the complex. Monomerization-induced loss of red chlorophylls is assigned to a cluster of chlorophylls adjacent to PsaX. Based on our findings, we propose a role of PsaX in the stabilization of red chlorophylls and that lipids of the surrounding membrane present a major source of thermal energy for uphill excitation energy transfer from red chlorophylls to P700."}],"date_created":"2021-11-19T11:37:29Z","publisher":"Springer ","day":"08","department":[{"_id":"LeSa"}],"isi":1,"user_id":"4359f0d1-fa6c-11eb-b949-802e58b17ae8","article_processing_charge":"No","pmid":1,"file":[{"file_size":6030261,"relation":"main_file","content_type":"application/pdf","date_updated":"2021-11-19T15:09:18Z","success":1,"creator":"cchlebak","file_name":"2021_CommBio_Çoruh.pdf","file_id":"10318","access_level":"open_access","checksum":"8ffd39f2bba7152a2441802ff313bf0b","date_created":"2021-11-19T15:09:18Z"}],"issue":"1","article_number":"304","ddc":["570"],"acknowledgement":"We are grateful for additional support and valuable scientific input for this project by Yuko Misumi, Jiannan Li, Hisako Kubota-Kawai, Takeshi Kawabata, Mian Wu, Eiki Yamashita, Atsushi Nakagawa, Volker Hartmann, Melanie Völkel and Matthias Rögner.
