--- res: bibo_abstract: - The interaction between a cell and its environment shapes fundamental intracellular processes such as cellular metabolism. In most cases growth rate is treated as a proximal metric for understanding the cellular metabolic status. However, changes in growth rate might not reflect metabolic variations in individuals responding to environmental fluctuations. Here we use single-cell microfluidics-microscopy combined with transcriptomics, proteomics and mathematical modelling to quantify the accumulation of glucose within Escherichia coli cells. In contrast to the current consensus, we reveal that environmental conditions which are comparatively unfavourable for growth, where both nutrients and salinity are depleted, increase glucose accumulation rates in individual bacteria and population subsets. We find that these changes in metabolic function are underpinned by variations at the translational and posttranslational level but not at the transcriptional level and are not dictated by changes in cell size. The metabolic response-characteristics identified greatly advance our fundamental understanding of the interactions between bacteria and their environment and have important ramifications when investigating cellular processes where salinity plays an important role.@eng bibo_authorlist: - foaf_Person: foaf_givenName: Georgina foaf_name: Glover, Georgina foaf_surname: Glover - foaf_Person: foaf_givenName: Margaritis foaf_name: Voliotis, Margaritis foaf_surname: Voliotis - foaf_Person: foaf_givenName: Urszula foaf_name: Łapińska, Urszula foaf_surname: Łapińska - foaf_Person: foaf_givenName: Brandon M. foaf_name: Invergo, Brandon M. foaf_surname: Invergo - foaf_Person: foaf_givenName: Darren foaf_name: Soanes, Darren foaf_surname: Soanes - foaf_Person: foaf_givenName: Paul foaf_name: O’Neill, Paul foaf_surname: O’Neill - foaf_Person: foaf_givenName: Karen foaf_name: Moore, Karen foaf_surname: Moore - foaf_Person: foaf_givenName: Nela foaf_name: Nikolic, Nela foaf_surname: Nikolic foaf_workInfoHomepage: http://www.librecat.org/personId=42D9CABC-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87 orcid: 0000-0001-9068-6090 - foaf_Person: foaf_givenName: Peter foaf_name: Petrov, Peter foaf_surname: Petrov - foaf_Person: foaf_givenName: David S. foaf_name: Milner, David S. foaf_surname: Milner - foaf_Person: foaf_givenName: Sumita foaf_name: Roy, Sumita foaf_surname: Roy - foaf_Person: foaf_givenName: Kate foaf_name: Heesom, Kate foaf_surname: Heesom - foaf_Person: foaf_givenName: Thomas A. foaf_name: Richards, Thomas A. foaf_surname: Richards - foaf_Person: foaf_givenName: Krasimira foaf_name: Tsaneva-Atanasova, Krasimira foaf_surname: Tsaneva-Atanasova - foaf_Person: foaf_givenName: Stefano foaf_name: Pagliara, Stefano foaf_surname: Pagliara bibo_doi: 10.1038/s42003-022-03336-6 bibo_volume: 5 dct_date: 2022^xs_gYear dct_identifier: - UT:000784143400001 dct_isPartOf: - http://id.crossref.org/issn/2399-3642 dct_language: eng dct_publisher: Springer Nature@ dct_title: Nutrient and salt depletion synergistically boosts glucose metabolism in individual Escherichia coli cells@ fabio_hasPubmedId: '35444215' ...
