We discuss methods for extracting knowledge from the web by randomly sampling and analyzing hosts and pages, and by analyzing the link structure of the web and how links accumulate over time. A variety of interesting and valuable information can be extracted, such as the distribution of web pages over domains, the distribution of interest in different areas, communities related to different topics, the nature of competition in different categories of sites, and the degree of communication between different communities or countries."}],"oa":1,"main_file_link":[{"url":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC387294/","open_access":"1"}],"page":"5186-5191","day":"06","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"author":[{"full_name":"Henzinger, Monika H","id":"540c9bbd-f2de-11ec-812d-d04a5be85630","first_name":"Monika H","orcid":"0000-0002-5008-6530","last_name":"Henzinger"},{"full_name":"Lawrence, Steve","first_name":"Steve","last_name":"Lawrence"}],"user_id":"2DF688A6-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","date_updated":"2023-02-17T12:21:43Z","type":"journal_article","oa_version":"Published Version","doi":"10.1073/pnas.0307528100","_id":"11877","extern":"1","article_type":"original","status":"public","external_id":{"pmid":["14745041"]},"publisher":"Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences","publication_status":"published","date_created":"2022-08-16T13:06:10Z","month":"04","issue":"suppl_1","publication":"Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences"}
