A recent proposition is that in analogy to low dimensional chaotic systems, turbulence is organized around unstable solutions of the governing equations which provide the building blocks of the disordered dynamics. We report the discovery of periodic solutions which just like intermittent turbulence are spatially localized and show that turbulent transients arise from one such solution branch. article_number: '224502' author: - first_name: Marc full_name: Avila, Marc last_name: Avila - first_name: Fernando full_name: Mellibovsky, Fernando last_name: Mellibovsky - first_name: Nicolas full_name: Roland, Nicolas last_name: Roland - first_name: Björn full_name: Hof, Björn id: 3A374330-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87 last_name: Hof orcid: 0000-0003-2057-2754 citation: ama: Avila M, Mellibovsky F, Roland N, Hof B.
